They say just leave it here and your photo is your receipt. Well, I returned an iPhone to Apple here and stupidly didn't take a photo. Apple never received it and since it was never scanned into the Fedex system, I was out over $800. From now on, smaller items go into the Fedex dropbox a little bit further South down (and on the other side of ) Valley. For larger items, I bite the bullet and go to Kinko's in Clifton. When possible, I ship at the UPS Store. I am not accusing the staff of taking my phone. Someone else could have bene dropping off something, recognized what was in there, and pocketed it. I don't see how Apple can't block the IMEI or serial number as stolen, but they didn't. In any case, I am out $800 because I couldn't prove I dropped it off and until I hear from Fedex that a photograph is sufficient proof or Montclair Shipping Plus changes its policy to "scan when asked," I will not be dropping off anything at this center and I strongly discourage anybody else from doing the same.

I admit that after living in Fairfax County, I became numb to the crisp, officious and generally unhelpful treatment from my local postal counter workers. I assumed their culture trained them to be fast and impersonal. So when I was treated with kindness and respect I didn't know what hit me. A woman in her late 70s stepped up to the counter next to me. The woman behind the counter asked the usual required questions about hazmat contents in her little envelope and, when the elderly woman was asked to touch "no" on the touchpad, she refused to touch it and became distraught from fear of the Coronavirus. The postal worker replied kindly, "don't worry, I understand." My attendant asked her colleague what she'd do then when the manager questioned this breech in protocol. She explained, "I will explain the reason and take responsibility for it." This never would have happened in NOVA. Brava.

I couldn't believe it. There had to be a mistake. I asked them to remeasure the box. Still the same. I said that there had to be a mistake and asked them to recheck the inputs. There was just no way that small box would cost so much. Guess what. I later found out that the store is a franchise, and they tack on a premium for shipping in-store. Charging a fair premium is fair but FOUR times the price!?!? It's pretty disgusting to rip people off like that.
