This speakeasy is located in the basement of a 120-year old building in Gruene Grove (Gruene,…read moreTexas). Our mixologist, Logan (absolutely wonderful human being) not only made us the most delicious pecan praline whiskey cocktail but he also gave use some incredible history on the space & of course the ghosts! The limestone walls are original. Much of the decor adorning the walls was found in the building. Some of the wall hangings include an original bond and doctor prescriptions for whiskey. The furnishings and accessories complement the rooms to enhance the feeling of old-west prohibition. The velvet pieces exemplify burlesque. Total "hitch your horse to a post, mosey on down for a secret drink and a good time" vibes. Logan spun a tale of ghosts appearing in selfies taken by previous guests. The story was sensational and I was all about it. A wonky thing happened with the POS system while we were there that required a reboot. I joked that the ghosts thought I was taking too many pictures. Dark, moody, sexy, and relaxing...everything you want in a speakeasy---& good drinks too, of course. Absolute works of liquid art!

We came on a weekday therefore it wasn't busy at all. The bartender was very friendly. Cocktails were great. The small room we took did have some plush red velvet seats and leather sofas as they try to set the mood of the 1920's prohibition era. The other room felt weird with the restroom washing station being next to the seating.

Creative without being overdone, and clearly built with intention. I went for the Old Fashioned flight, which featured bourbon, rye, mezcal, and rum variations (they let me tailor it to my spirit interests) each one distinct, balanced, and actually worth slowing down to compare. It's not just a gimmick; it's a thoughtful way to showcase how versatile a single cocktail can be. Service matched the quality of the drinks as they were attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming without feeling forced. You can tell they care about what they're serving. The vibe is what really seals it. Lively but not chaotic, polished but still relaxed. It feels like a place you can settle into, whether you're starting the night or lingering for one more round. Didn't expect to find one of the better cocktail bars in the area out here, but this one absolutely delivers...and then some.

My favorite part was the DJ was also playing electric guitar to accompany some of the songs in his lineup. It was really cool. I've never seen a DJ do that before. The whole time we were there the service and ambience and tastes were top-notch, but the DJ piece really created a memorable experience that leaves me wanting to come back.

But it was more important to the Powder Room that the next group got their table on time, apparently. The drinks took soooo long, we got ONE round in, and were asked to leave the table before our second round arrived. They had no issues when taking our second round order while we were seated, but we were asked to leave the table immediately after. This round also took forever and we drank it standing, crowded, in everyone's way. I was embarrassed as it was my birthday, and I was taking a group of 7 other people - new to Austin - here to check out what was one of my favorite spots. I was bragging about it and chose it over other spots on their list. They hated it. I'm disappointed. Our server was great to us and apologetic about the service bar.

It has a classy, tasteful speakeasy vibe without feeling overdone or pretentious. They also have a private room that would be great for a special group gathering or a more intimate celebration. The grand piano in the room adds a really elegant touch and makes the space feel even more elevated. We went on a Monday night, so it's hard to say what the normal energy is like on a busier evening, but the overall atmosphere was still very pleasant. Service was friendly and attentive, which I appreciated. The only thing I would have loved was a little more creativity or guidance with the cocktails. The space gives the impression that you're about to get a true mixologist-style experience, but the recommendations we received were pretty standard, like Old Fashioneds and martinis. We were hoping for something a little more unique or original, maybe a twist on a Sidecar or an elevated take on a classic Old Fashioned. That said, it's still a beautiful spot with great ambience, pleasant service, and a very nice overall feel. I would definitely go back, especially on a busier night to see the full vibe.

There are some highly interesting bourbons as well. The selection of ryes is thin. If you read Whiskey Advocate (which I have been known to do), the rye curating will give you no thrills. The selection of Irish is thin as well - but no blame on that point. The population of upscale Irishes is just not that large, once you pass some over-rated cliches like Redbreast. * * * Seven Grand however is not an abstract name. That is how much you will pay in order to drink here. The prices for two ounces of many of those beverages will make the eyes pop out of your head sideways and go running out the front door. In more than a few cases, two drinks here will cost you close to what you would pay for a full bottle purchased at a liquor store. Now to be sure - bar drinking is expensive. That kind of percentage markup is not unheard of in the industry. But when you move up the price range for the raw material, The absolute amount of money you are overpaying to have that drink goes up astronomically. I will pay big for a peak experience I will remember for the rest of my life. (See my review of Craft Omakase.) I will not pay big for a random experiment with a bottle that could be wonderful and could be overrated. It is more economical to just buy the bottle. If the experiment works, I get a free month of legendary drinking. To my mind, bottle testing at Seven Grand just doesn't make sense.

He told me about the happy hour specials and also informed me that it was free pool night (on Mondays). I'm not a huge fan of whiskey, but I've found that whiskey bars tend to have amazing craft cocktails. I browsed the HH menu and noticed a Whiskey Sour. I actually like a Clarified Whiskey Sour and was curious to see how it compared. The Whiskey Sour wasn't bad, but it wasn't as good as the Clarified Sour that I've had at Reserve 101 in Houston. Kyle told me they're working on some clarified cocktails. I also ordered a Boulevardier (which isn't on the HH menu). Kyle admitted that he had never made one. He quickly looked up the ingredients and made one for me and it wasn't bad! I've only had this cocktail one other time before so I didn't have much to compare it to, but I did enjoy it. They have a small cigar menu. Cigars can be smoked outside on the patio (which is shared with Las Perlas and Caña Rum Bar). I liked the laid back feel between the pool tables and the rustic decor (it felt like I was in a lodge). Though I'm not a big whiskey drinker, I did enjoy the cocktails as well as the ambiance.
