I came here with high expectations due to the great reviews. The service was very attentive and the place clean. It is very professional. They serve herbal tea as you get your nails done. However, my shellac was just slightly better than the one I had at another more low end place, two weeks ago, but cost twice as much for the same service: removal, manicure and shellac. The shellac on a couple of nails wasn't nicely shaped despite paying for a manicure too. The shellac was painted over the cuticle in a couple of spots. The shellac started peeling on three nails after 1.5 weeks. I had a shellac done in downtown Vancouver for 2/3 of the price that neatly lasted 3 weeks. Let me tell you this. I just turned 32, how do I celebrate my birthday I book a facial, cause why not right? It came highly recommended by a woman I work with, as a man it felt kind of odd booking it, but guys do it! This was a 10/10 experience. Im going back every 2 months for sure. I have only the highest praise for this fabulous little shoppe! First, let me tell you about the absolutely astounding service. This is a place to go to be truly holistically cared for: from the endless refills of special herbal tea blends, to the high quality products they use, to the relaxed and careful attention they give you with each service, to their follow-through that you are completely happy with your results -- this spot simply can't be beat! I was treated with the highest level of respect, even when I asked for something to be redone because it had messed up on my way home. Pedicures that go beyond pedicures: pure blissed out foot and leg massage, tingly scrubs, gentle tools (yay, I didn't bleed like I always do at other places!) and a very classy and constantly updated selection of colours to choose from. Manicures: I got French tips (regular polish), which require a meticulous and very skilled application. Mine were impeccable. I'm thrilled. The ladies were absolute perfectionists. I've never tried acrylic nails or gel nails but the ladies looked so good in theirs that I might just go for it next time. Facials: I had the privilege of being part of a special facial night with a group, and I was so ecstatic with the experience and the results that I had to go back for a number of the products that we used. DELICIOUS. Chemical-free. Smelling and feeling like heaven. Goddamn, you deserve it. They are super knowledgeable and confident and can guide you to the exact right thing for your skin. The interior is super clean, and they don't use those difficult to clean jacuzzi foot tub things that are usually plastic-lined for the sake of sanitation - no, they use stainless steel bowls that can be easily sterilized and you can be sure of no lingering foot fungus from anybody else. Makes it easier to relax, no? The mani-pedi stations are downstairs and the facials area is upstairs where it's more quiet and secluded. They have a wide range of Naturopathica products that literally fly off the shelves, they're that good. I went there for a pedicure and it was by far the worst I have ever had. They did such a poor job cleaning the toenails and removing the cuticles; they did not do much of it...I am honestly capable of doing a better job at home. I felt it was rushed and the person was sooo rude: I asked for an ingrown to be cut and they just ignored me; and I asked again and they just said NO. I was shocked! I was looking forward to great pedicure; I had not had one since COVID but unfortunately it did not workout that way. I have to say tho the place is very clean and well organized. The body wrap was disappointing. It was supposed to be for the whole body, instead she only did my back, the front of my arms and the front of my lower legs. And the massage part was only for my back. As for the facial, she didn't even use the steam machine or remove the blackheads/whiteheads. Also, all the service that I got from them combined were supposed to be 2 hours, instead it was slightly over 1 hour. Finally, when a store gives samples, they are usually for free so you can try their products and then come buy from them. Discriminating policy. In trying to book a pedicure at the Upkeep Shoppe i found their "policy" quite shocking. I called to find when the next available appointment was and was told in two days. Receptionist asked if she should book it, and i hesitate saying "let me check if that's possible, i have new born and need someone to look after her" I was shocked by her response when she advised me "well, we do not accommodate guests under the age of 13" I am curious what they would do if I booked the appointment and brought by baby with me. I am also curious how long they can stay in business with customer service like that and by not allowing any mothers who have children under the age of 13. read more

My review is not based on the actual service but the customer service or 'lack' there of. So, granted we got there 30 minutes late and I had explained to the person on the phone that we would be late and should I bother to come - she said yes, come and we will see what we can do. Due to snow and traffic, we arrived later than expected only to be greeted with a very condescending and rude explanation that they could now maybe soak off my polish and would not be able to do the pedi for my husband. The girl that greeted us at the door was very nice and friendly and was interrupted by who I presume was the person I spoke with on the phone who told me that they would start my service and see how far they would get in 30 minutes but they weren't even going to attempt the pedi. I would have understood all that except that's not what I was told on the phone in terms of being given a drop dead time. Most of all, it was the facial expression, attitude and tone of this person at the front desk that was very very rude. I will NOT return - I am new to town and would have probably returned IF the customer service tone was at all friendly. Visited The Upkeep Shoppe for Yelp's Pre-Holiday Pamperfest for a complimentary skin bar facial. The shop itself is unpretentious... as a not-always-so-girly-girl I didn't feel totally out of place like I sometimes do when I visit a spa/salon/etc type place. My level of knowledge about my skin can be summed up by the beginning of the facial when I was asked, "What's your skin type?" and I just blinked at her. Eventually I came up with a very roundabout description of my interpretation of what's going on on my face that I sort of doubt was helpful. That wasn't a problem though, we were guided through a process that could be done at home and by the end of it my skin looked better than it normally does with makeup. I had to firmly remind myself that I'm not done paying for my Christmas shopping (and that I still have skincare products at home to use up!) to keep from loading up on goodies for myself right then and there! We were also treated to one of the teas sold at the shop, Apple Crumble, which was very tasty - not too sweet, and perfect for a night when we were waiting for a snowstorm to blow in. I visited the Upkeep Shoppe a few weeks back with my mother and sister for pedicures. My pedicure has not chipped or peeled - STILL! They were super friendly and chatty but did not dominate our conversation. The white tea foot bath was a really nice touch and I loved the tea that they brought us to drink. The nail bar was full, yet it still felt cozy and relaxed. They were also very accommodating to my mother who was recovering from a hip surgery at the time. The Upkeep Shoppe is a gender neutral skin and nail bar that has impeccable service and great results. Natalie and her team are amazing. From the minute you walk in the door it feels warm, inviting and inspiring. Perfectly chosen colours on the wall and framed motivational messages along pairs with the lovely aroma of whatever tea they are brewing is make the atmosphere relaxing and inviting. Services include all the spa services you could want (massage, waxing, nails, facials). They also run individual skin consultations which are wonderful. Their products are Canadian and they sell the wonderful tea that they serve. My sister swears by one of their skin care lines. I think this would be the perfect place to come with a significant other. I know guys can be shy about heading to a spa, but this place is lovely without being feminine, and the staff are really approachable and informed. The prices for some services here are definitely a but higher than other places, but the level of service and the quality is totally worth it. I was overdue for a girl date with a friend of mine, so when she suggested we go for pedicures my first thought was "yes! A catch up session and no more hobbit feet? I'm in!" She works across the street from the Upkeep Shoppe, so she suggested we try it out. My friend had been there previously for a manicure or something so, she knew what to expect, but I had never been and decided to do some research. It's important to note that usually, I go to the types of salons where you can get a basic mani-pedi for something like $30-$35, so when I first saw the price listed as $55 for a pedicure alone, I was a bit...unsure. I can justify spending money on many things, my feet are usually not one of them (important note: I hate feet). When we got there I took it all in, the space was small but well used and felt comfortable, not crammed. I was relieved to see how refreshing it felt. We were promptly directed to pick our colors, and when I was being my usual indecisive self, the staff were patient, friendly, and super helpful! As soon as we took our seats and got settled in we were each overed a delicious tea, though to be honest I already forget what kind it was... I downed that sucker, fast! The rest of our treatment was nothing but enjoyable. The water was the perfect temperature, they were thorough but not rough, the hot towel massage really hit the mark. I totally get why it was priced the way it was. After doing some research I've discovered that a lot of high-end places are priced as high as $65-$70 for a pedicure, and don't even offer the whole experience that I got, so now that it's over I can 100% say it's worth it. They take their time and don't make you feel like you're being passed through on a conveyor belt as the next customer comes in, and they're super friendly and skilled at what they do. It may be a bit out of my budget to do regularly but, I will definitely be back when I feel I deserve an extra special treat, and I will absolutely be recommending them to my friends. read more

I had never heard of the Upkeep Shoppe prior to the Yelp elite event I attended here the other night. I'm glad to have attended the evening, because this is a great little spot. It's located on Preston, just up the street from Absolute Comedy. The storefront is absolutely adorable. When I arrived here, I was greeted by many smiling faces, and a staff member offered to take my jacket. I mingled for a bit before receiving my facial and was able to take the space in. It's very cozy and warm feeling. I really enjoyed the faux(?) fireplace and the seating area, which is presumably for pedicures. One of the first things I noticed about the store was the selection of products they use in the store- namely, China Glaze nail polish and B. Kamins skin care products. I have a few China Glaze nail polishes at home and really enjoy them, and are aware they are a more fancy polish, if you will. As well, I had heard of B. Kamins before, though never tried their products, so I was excited to learn more, because I was signed up for a facial. I received a 'Skin Bar facial' which was different from any other facial I have received in the past. It seemed to me, to be more of a glorified tailored facial cleansing using strictly B. Kamins products. I liked this, because these products are Canadian and I really enjoy supporting Canadian companies. I was a bit disappointed the aesthetician was not able to tell me more about my skin type to tailor the session, but relied on the information that I was able to provide her with- and that is my skin is sensitive to products. I heard this feedback from a few other members, who weren't sure what their skin type was. This may not be reflective of the store however, because it was a B.Kamins representative who offered me a facial this evening for the special event- and I'm not sure that she is a regular employee at the shop. We began the session with a vegetable based cleanser, followed by the soothing cleanser, a moisturizing toners, a peel pad, purifying earth mask, vitamin c serum, 'nia-stem' serum, BB cream, and lastly the eye cream. I felt like the peel pads used were a bit harsh on my skin, but I loved the BB Cream. And while I didn't use it on my skin, I was introduced to a corrective mattifier, which I loved and took home with me that night (despite the hefty price tag of $54.00 for 50ml *cringe*). Overall, I think the shoppe is very cute. The staff here are super sweet! I had the opportunity to talk to a few of them after my service, and they were genuinely kind. Specifically, the owner Natalie is really sweet and it would seem that she is really kind to her employees. I found the prices a little bit steep, but they also offer a variety of services, so you might find something to fit within your budget. During our trip to Ottawa I thought it would be nice to try something new together and give my BF a little bit of pampering for Valentine's Day. I found this place using Yelp, was able to call and make an appointment easily. They were very professional and very good with providing me with explanations of their services. We were able to change time appointments effortlessly and the receptionist was very accommodating. On the day of our appointment, we entered a cute little small salon that was cozy and clean. We were greeted, coats were taken, slippers were given to us, I chose my nail polish colour and were seated comfortably. We were offered any drinks and were able to sit comfortably next to each other. Because we have both never had a pedicure we were not sure what to expect. They brought out water tubs with a bag of herbs or something it seemed inside. The girls who did our pedicures were nice and very professional. We felt very relaxed and they made sure that my toes were wrapped up nicely so my boots wouldn't ruin their hard work. This was a very good experience and different from the nail salons I see back at home, they were very clean and took very good attention to making sure we were comfortable. All of the staff were very nice, very cute salon and cozy. Prices may seem a bit high but it is worth the service and care they provide. I had been meaning to try this place for a while, especially since it's a short walk from my office. Most of all, I wanted to try a place that doesn't smell like chemicals and didn't make me feel like cattle. I have a broken foot, so I waited a few weeks before I booked my appointment. The girl who did my pedicure was very gentle with me and careful with my foot, so I really appreciated that. She did a really great job with my pedicure. I never had a leg scrub before included with a pedicure so that was great. So why no 5 star review? I found the place to be really crowded. It's a small place, and I appreciate the fact there is a lot of demand for their services. I just found it hard to relax. Also your feet soak in a bowl that eventually grows cold, so I wish they had foot spa basins. Again, they use the space they have the best they can. What a lovely place! As my friend and I walked across Preston, snow was falling, we were getting ready for the first big snow fall in Ottawa. The window was lit up, and we were greeted by smiling faces, laughter and cheer as soon as we got through the door. The decor is just what you need in a spa, wood shelving, tiled floors, comfy stools at nail bars, benches, like couches, line the pedicure area [with foot rests that conveniently double as stools! How much fun! There were only 3 guys and the rest of us were all girls! The spa itself was great though! Lots of natural and cool tones, so it was fairly gender neutral...these were very manly guys who came to the event, so I'm sure they appreciated that the spa wasn't decorated with pink frilly non sense! Annnnyway! After my coat was taken for me and I got my name tag, Brandi came and found me and let me know that she was going to be my esthetician for the evening, I had signed up for a manicure and shoulder massage. I was to choose my colours and join her at the bar! I am quite indecisive, and therefore choose nail polish colours based on their names, as opposed to the actual colour they would be, but, as I was first, I couldn't dilly dally, so I asked Brandi to choose a colour for me. She brought back two choices, and I'm so glad she did, because after humming and hawing about which to choose, I finally decided on both! *photos to come* a dark grey called Concrete Catwalk, and a dark shimmery purple called That's Groovy! So I sat down, with my wine, nibblies, and Brandi. Then! The community manager, Andrea B, sat down beside me! We got manis and massages together! The girls who did Andrea and my nails,Brandi and Sarah, were just great! They did such a fabulous job on our nails, and were nice and chatty, just like Andrea and I! Haha Unfortunately, I chipped my thumbnail today... :( After the mani, Brandy moved to my shoulders. What a great massage! Wayyy too short though...which is selfish to say, because it was an event, but seriously, that good! Once I got all dolled up I started snapping some pics! Liz and Richard getting their nails done! Christienne and Jeff getting skin treatments, Amanda and Alyson were sipping wine waiting for their skin treatments. We chit chatted the night away, all of us! Update: Second experience was as good as the first, good service and attentive tea-filling and such. Must have been a top coat issue the first time because overall, the nails have lasted way longer. The second index finger is a problem for me at home, as the nail layers are flaky, but normally when going to a manicurist they file or buff it down automatically and it is not an issue. It chipped on the same day though, as no such procedure was done. Great customer service and atmosphere, but if it weren't for those this would stay at a 3 for me. -------------- After reading reviews and such, my friend and I were very excited to go in for a couple of shellac mani's (even though the lady on the phone gave us the impression they offered nail extensions as well, especially considering the price $$$.) The experience was lovely! Both manicurists were friendly, although the one my friend got was considerably more attentive and accommodating. We ultimately both left very happy as they told us that the shellac mani would last up to 3x as long as a regular mani and help stimulate nail growth. The same day however, mine started to chip. The following day half a nail peeled off completely (I had not been washing dishes or doing anything to speed up the destruction), and my friend's had become completely discoloured at the tips! The top of her nails had changed from a lovely periwinkle blue to a dirty purple tone that just made the 50$ mani lose all of it's value. Mine already had. Although when we first walked out we were left thinking we had a new regular spot, I am sorry to say we will not be returning. 50 dollars is not worth so cheap value of a mani. Feel completely swindled. We plan on calling the store to see if they can redo it or offer a free touchup given the circumstances. They were completely ruined within literal days. Will update review after dealing with customer service and seeing how they handle their mistakes. read more

The manicures and pedicures come with their own special tea blends to sip while your nails are pampered. My experience here was extremely disappointing. I showed up a few minutes early for my waxing appointment and was told by the receptionist to go upstairs and wait. I was not offered anything - not even a glass of water. I was just told to wait upstairs. Not what I was expecting after reading reviews about this place. The girl who was to do my waxing showed up after a few minutes. She seemed nice but didn't remove all of my hair and left a bunch of wax on my legs. I guess it wasn't the worst experience but I did not feel welcome here and the whole thing felt rushed and impersonal. For the $60+ I paid for the service here, I don't think it was worth it. I don't think I will be coming back, sorry, there are way better places out there. The response from the owner on my Google review was fairly condescending: "As guests enter into the shop our policy is to check them into our booking system and then have our host guide them to their station. If they will be receiving a waxing service, facial or massage the guest will be guided upstairs to wait in our lounge. This area provides guests with a self serve tea bar where one of our signature teas awaits you. With hair removal waxing services the hair length must be at least 1/4 inch long in order to be removed. In this case where the hair is too short it is out of the estheticians control and the hair will not be fully removed. We educate our guests on this information and encourage them to let the hair grow at least 5-6 weeks between waxing." How would I, as a first time customer, know about your "self serve tea" if no one said a word to me? As for your comment about educating guests that hair must be a certain length - thanks for your condescension, but I have gotten waxed before and am well aware how long the hair should be. Instead of owning up to your poor service and trying to improve it, you deny any wrong doing. That's a great way to run a business! I regret giving you any of my time or money. read more

My first check-in! I attended a Yelp Elite event here (thanks Andrea!) and had the pleasure of experiencing some of the services the Upkeep Shoppe has to offer. We were incredibly lucky to have a mini neck and shoulder massage during our facial tutorials, and I enjoyed every minute of it! I originally discovered this adorable little shop while walking down Preston in Little Italy, but hadn't had the chance to drop in. So glad I finally did! All of the ladies there were so sweet, and the owner, Natalie, is a peach. I really respect and appreciate the fact that she chose to sell products in her store from a brand that she trusts and uses herself, B.Kamins. I'm very wary of skin care products I haven't tried before, as I have sensitive combination skin that was very acne-prone in my teenage years. I also have mild eczema that has gotten better over the years, but I still have some redness and small bumps on my cheeks that worsen with the winter air. The B.Kamins representative was also there, guiding us through all of the steps on how to apply different products. I must admit, I was incredibly overwhelmed, but by the end, I didn't debate for very long on whether or not to purchase the products. They aren't inexpensive, but they are a very well worth it investment for those who have or have had skin issues. The combination of the cleanser, toner, moisturizer, etc. had a very positive, calming and smoothing, effect on my skin. I had a brief moment of buyer's remorse the morning after, thinking I bought way too many things, but then I felt how amazing my skin was and was instantly happy that I decided to go with B.Kamins. Hmmm had a pretty good experience here, they fit me in on short notice and the gals were friendly, but I've received the same services for ALOT cheaper. As well the neck and back massage was hardly a massage but I guess it's because it's done by an esthetician not an RMT. As well the lighting is so bright (flourescent) it's hard to relax. Also during my facial the estheticians outside the door were so loud it was hard to relax. I want to like this place but it's overpriced and my experience was just meh. read more

I really wanted to love this place after all of the overwhelmingly positive reviews that I saw on yelp and I was extremely disappointed after my first experience but they really stepped up and corrected things. I have been going to Upkeep Shoppe for waxing services for over a year now, only going to other salons if they were booked for the date I needed. I have had about 5 different ladies do my waxing (full leg/brazilian) and everytime I've been impressed with their services. The ladies are open, and chatty if you want to be, but also pick up on if you don't want to talk a bunch. I love that the waxing services are preformed upstairs in a seperate section. The rooms are spacious and well lit while also having a relaxing spa vibe. The music varies from zen chill instrumentals to Justin Bieber. I feel like no matter your style, you feel accepted at Upkeep! Definitely recommend it, but not a place for those on a budget. read more

I planned a surprise outing for my sister with a group of her girlfriends leading up to her engagement party. Molly was exceptionally patient with every change to the appointment that came through leading up & when we arrived everything was so well organized. I have never been to a spa where the staff ask you if you like the shape of your nails before painting, and confirm that you like the colour after the first nail is painted. I got married October 21, 2016 and came in for some pampering the night before with my sister, and future mother in law. Very disappointed by my experience. I went there 3 times. The last two times I went there I complained about the shape of my nails and asked them to adjust them because my nails aren't very strong and from experience they break easily with the shape they made. The esthetician seemed annoyed to make a change. Later I was contacted by someone asking me to take my business elsewhere. After saying they "couldn't make me happy" they hung up on me. Recently had a Shellac Manicure with a group of friends on Wednesday cocktail night. My experience was great with lots of room for our group and a great manicure. However, within 4 days had a few chips, called the store and the owner Nathalie was very apologetic and had me come back in. She buffed and touched up and recapped all of my nails, fitting me in right a way. Great customer service! read more

Best pedicure ever!!! My feet have never been so soft!! (and they were soft for weeks after!!) It was really neat and unique how they did a foot soak with tea! The whole staff is incredibly sweet and their attention to details is amazing! I went with a few gal pals and we had a wonderful experience relaxing in the beautiful atmosphere (such a gorgeous spa!) I really liked the coziness of this salon. My only gripe is that I wish they had more of a nail polish selection. I was looking for a light pink, and there was only one? It was for a wedding manicure, so I couldn't go with one of the more vibrant colors they offered. Luckily the lady was able to mix two nail polishes to meet my needs. It turned out great and lasted a long time. If you invest in more nail polish choices, I will definitely keep coming back and bring more clients in. read more
