Now that was a good meal! Two adults were well-fed with leftovers by ordering bread service, 1 10 oz filet ($70 was more than I've ever spent on a slab of beef before, but it was goooooood), duck fat potatoes, grilled asparagus, one cocktail and one beer, plus birthday comped tiramisu. Here's the deal. The décor is beautiful. The live jazz music is wonderful. The food is very good. Why not 5 stars? Because figuring the bill out at the end is always a nightmare because we come in groups larger than 4 and only get one bill. We are all singles and want to pay separately. Some people do not Venmo or Zelle and some people forget to bring cash. Or they need change from the cash they brought. It took us an hour the other night to figure out how to pay the bill because some items were priced a little higher on the bill than the menu. Some drinks were added that we didn't order. etc. Some of us needed change. All this hassle and they charge you a 20% tip. IMO, a 20% tip is for service that goes above and beyond and when it comes to the bill, we always get less service than more. To me, a server earns a 20% tip when they give us separate checks, or at least separate the bill so we know who owes what without having to pass a 6" long check around the table - so everyone can write down what they ordered and do the math. But they won't do that here. They claim their system is too archaic. They will tell you that you can use 3 credit cards - but that is only if you split the bill evenly 3 ways. So, our bill was $412.20 - which means using 3 cards doesn't help us at all, because each card would be charged $137.40. That makes it even more confusing when trying to figure out who owes what. That said, if you plan to come in a group - and I advise coming, because it a delightful experience - bring cash and make sure everyone uses Venmo or Zelle, so one person can charge the whole bill and the rest can Venmo or give that person cash for their share (plus 20% tip) read more

I have been here several times and have brought many out of town guests. I love the atmosphere and the live music. To drink, I love their Underground Manhattan. For appetizers, the oysters and prawn cocktail are fresh and flavorful, while the French onion starter is to die for (if you are a fan of French onion soup flavor). My favorite entree is the filet oscar, thought the peppercorn steak is a close second, accompanied by the truffle mash. The service is a little slower then upstairs but still very good. They literally ran out of steak. At a steak place. We've been here once before and it was amazing. We went again last night and the amount of food they were out of (for a 6:00 reservation) was absurd. They were completely out of 3 of the 6 steak options. No tenderloin was available. The waitress said they were "cutting it" upstairs so we said we'd wait and then later she returned and said they had run out. That left much higher priced options or much lower quality options. Not my idea of an ideal date at a steak place. Service was slow. Everything else was great. But when I'm spending that much money on dinner and a babysitter I'd love to order off the menu. read more

A MUST TRY! Reservations are highly recommended but we got super lucky to be able to get a table walking in on a Friday afternoon. It is located downstairs at the Monarch Hotel. The decor and ambience of the speakeasy was pretty cool. There was a live jazz band. There were no strict dress code but everyone was dressed up. We certainly had no clue and arrived in shorts and t shirts. However, we were not treated any differently which was amazing! The hostess was very sweet and welcoming. The waitress was even better! By far the best service we have received in a very long time. She explained the menu and made some recommendations. She also meticulously planned how the dishes would arrive and in an order that would allow us to enjoy every dish. She recommended we start with the shrimp cocktail and salad first. Both were starters were wonderful. Next was the bread and it was DELICIOUS. She was concerned that we would be too full from the bread and wouldn't be able to enjoy all the entrees. And she was absolutely right! The bread arrived warm with the best herb butter I have had. The fresh burrata just took it to another level. An absolute MUST TRY. The lobster bisque was so smooth and flavorful. Next was the main course which was the porterhouse, truffle mash, and truffle Mac and cheese. By this time, we were already full from the bread (as the waitress had predicted). The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare, not too rare and not too medium. The steak was accompanied with some wild mushrooms and garlic. Well seasoned and topped with some herb butter. The truffled mash was very smooth and creamy. Topped with some mushrooms. Definitely recommended for those who love the truffle/mushroom flavor! The truffle Mac had a perfect balance of pasta to cheese. Everything was absolute PERFECTION. At the end of dinner, there was a dessert cart that was rolled out if you had any room for dessert. There was a good selection in addition to a few items on their menu. Now it's a speakeasy so how were the drinks? AMAZING! My husband had the old fashioned and he said it was the best he's had in town. Of course he had to order another round. I had the #greenfairy because the waitress said it was their signature drink. I am not a black licorice fan so was concerned about the taste of the absinthe. To my surprise, once the absinthe was mixed into the strong basil slush topped with 24kt gold flakes (yes it was just decor), it was refreshing! I also tried the French Kiss which tasted like a raspberry lemon drop. It was not too sweet and very tasty. From the ambience, to the service, to the food and drinks, everything was amazing. What a beautiful gem! We have dined previously at de Fuego, the trademark restaurant, but when we heard about the underground restaurant and lounge beneath it, we couldn't wait to experience it. The decorations are beautiful and takes you back to a speak easy era. With vintage"flapper" style artwork, plush dining chairs, plants and glamorous lighting. Live music such as Billie inspired singers, slap bass style musical numbers, and a menu boasting several old world era dishes as well as drinks. (French 75, old fashioned, st Germain bubbly, and an absythe service.) The truffle Mac is incredible, as are their salads, steaks, and the seafood platter. They also have a cigar bar for relaxing. And, if whiskey is your thing they have you covered there too. It's a beautiful spot for a fun night out, or if you want a unique setting for a date night. Extra compliments to our server, Heidi. I was blown away by my eating experience at this restaurant. The food, ambiance, and customer service were all excellent. I had dinner here last week and will definitely come back again. This is not a budget friendly restaurant, but it's well worth your money. I loved the Prohibition Era decor and outfits that all the staff wore. The food and cocktails were phenomenal. You have to eat the warm rosemary bread with bone marrow, dry aged ribeye, truffle mashed potatoes, and tiramisu! It was one of the best and most memorable meals I have had in a restaurant in a long time. It was well worth the price. It also had live music, which was a nice bonus. My wife and I came here after a horrible evening at the Whiskey Lounge (NEVER go there btw... terrible service no matter what the reviews say). This place was awesome! April was our server, told us about the various drinks, etc., and even had someone come and check on us when it was time for her break. Outstanding!! The atmosphere was so cool, and the only downside was the live music was just simply too loud. Way overamplified. The singer was good, but a mic (or at least not the volume) was not necessary. Other than that, we can't wait to come back again and try the steaks, which sound incredible. Also, this place is hard to navigate to. It's inside the Monarch hotel, then off to the right when you enter and then downstairs to the left... no signs we could see. Just like the old speakeasies :) read more

This rating is for our non-visit. We had reservations with some friends that we made online weeks ago, then called last week to confirm since our reservation was for Valentine's Day. Yesterday afternoon they called to say they were sorry but they overbooked and instead of a 6:00 reservation they had to move us to 8:30 pm, which we declined. So we ended up going to a local bar and probably spent a third of what we planned on spending, I guess that's the upside. I normally don't like to leave this type of review, but we were really looking forward to it, and doing this last minute is a really crappy way to treat people. Get it together please, I really hate to see other people have their special days ruined by your lack of planning. read more

My Wife and I have been going to the underground for a few years now. We have been there about 7 times total. Some times it's just the two of us, and one time we had 10 of us. The food, service, drinks, and music have ALWAYS been top notch. Its certainly a special occasion type of place if your going to be enjoying a full meal, but we have also gone just to enjoy the music and a drink/desert as well. So that said, we know what this place it capable of. We had a group of friends that we wanted to introduce to The Undergound and were excited when we were able to finally make the work. Imagine my dismay when I saw that the menu had changed, and some of our favorites had been removed. Then I read some of the recent reviews, that really let the air out of the tires. It seemed that the portion size's had been cut, the prices had gone up, and worse of all, the service was sub par. We almost decided to skip going, and sub in another fav "speakeasy". But alas, we ended up giving it a go. We are SOOO glad we did! While the menu has changed, and the prices have gone up a little bit, all the rest was exactly as we have come to expect. SUPERIOR service, SUPERIOR food, SUPERIOR drinks, SUPERIOR jazz! I am hopeful that the poor reviews are a one off. And I get it; If you have an experience where the wheels just fell off and the bus burns to the ground, I would also be very hesitant to return. But for us (and our friends), I'm very happy to say we will continue to enjoy The Underground in the future. read more

I have always wanted to try their food here! We didn't have a reservation but they had room and squeezed us since we came right before they opened. Live music and singer were incredible. Didn't know this, but you have to tip them with your check on top your tip to the waiter who was incredible as well. She took her time and in general was very kind. Their bread appetizer was the first thing we had-Brie and caramelized onions. Delicious of course. We actually got full from that! My husband had one of the steaks and he wanted medium well done but in the middle it was more raw... we asked to cook it a bit more but honestly it didn't seem like they did. I had the herb chicken. It was wayyy too big. Literally a small chicken on your plate. Something you can get at Freddy's. Nothing spectacular. I had the truffled mash in the side. Holy crap was there a lot of garlic. Didn't sleep all night because all the dishes had garlic but this was too much. Not getting that again! Their drinks are amazing, probably best of had. Be ready to spend $180 for two people. But their portions are great and the bread appetizer was probably enough for us. I would come again but not get the chicken or any garlic dish. Good people and great atmosphere! Please use less garlic and tell people about how the steak is more raw if you want "medium". If it was a date idk if you would want to kiss someone after a dish like that LOL read more

This review is probably closer to a 2 1/2, but I would feel bad giving them a 2. I got the recommendation to try The Underground from a friend at work that was raving about a dinner her and her husband had. She said she told them it was a special occasion (which it really wasn't) and that they got treated so well and that everyone went out of their way to make it a special night. I decided to surprise my husband for our 3rd anniversary and take him there since we almost never try new places. I made the note when making the reservation that it was a special occasion and our anniversary. When we checked in at the host desk she said "oh I see this is an anniversary dinner", and that was the last of our "special" treatment. I was extremely disappointed because I really wanted the night to be special and out of the ordinary for my husband. The ambiance was decent and the live piano music was a highlight. Overall the food was good, but for 210.00 with tip I expected a little more. The bread with Burrata was the best I've ever had, but the steak for 60.00+ was not worth the price in my opinion. I really wanted to like this place because it sounded like everything my husband and I love. I'm still very disappointed that our special night was nothing special at all. Lesson learned. With all the nice and expensive restaurants in Portland where we live, we will not be making the journey in traffic to the underground again. read more

The drinks were amazing. We tried to order a few appetizers and the server went to put the order in, only to come back a few minutes later telling us that we cannot order them unless we are "elderly, or ordering steaks". We went ahead and still ordered the bread we had tried ordering with our apps. We sipped our drinks slowly, waiting for the bread. It never came- until of course, we had finally finished our drinks, about an hour after arriving. At that point we handed the server our card and said to go ahead and close us out- we were tired of waiting. We get our receipt back and go to sign, only to find out that they also charged us (and had already run the card, since we hadn't even gotten our tab yet and asked to close out) for the appetizers that we apparently weren't allowed to order. The only reason I didn't rate this a 1 (or a 0 if it were possible) is because the drinks and atmosphere were amazing, as well as the chimichurri that came with the bread. But the service was awful. We weren't allowed to order apps. And then were charged $66 for two drinks and some bread. It's a good thing they covered the tab AFTER we noticed and called them out.. or we would've left hungry and paying $66 for two drinks and bread. read more

Fantastic and amazing experience. The outfits the bartender and servers wear was suited to this speakeasy vibe. Live piano player when the wife and I went. I felt like I was going to be taken out back if I took photos of the drinks, that's how real it felt. The music was mostly 90's songs and I believe 1 Frank Sinatra-Fly Me To The Moon. They have a cart that does an absinthe service. Everyone dresses up including the waitresses like a roaring 20s. The place is elegantly decorated speakeasy style. Onto the food, we had an amazing French onion appetizer. It was like French onion soup minus the soup spread over warm bread. So good! We had some oysters that were served with mignonette, horseradish sauce and chimchurri: take your pick! We had the filet and the tomahawk steak. Both were delicious, seasoned perfectly and cooked to preciously to medium rare. I want to start off by saying that my husband and I have been looking forward to coming here since we celebrated our anniversary. We have been telling all our friends about this place and last night was a huge disappointment. Came here with my husband yesterday for my birthday and was probably one of the weirdest dining experiences we've ever had. The service was terrible and we were extremely uncomfortable. We felt like we kept bothering our server. I was trying to be understanding because it was a Friday and I assumed our server was busy but man. My husband called a head of time and told them it was my birthday. We sat down and ordered food immediately. Our server didn't even bring all the food we ordered so we just said forget it. We finished and our server never checked up on us and randomly came by and dropped the check off....she didn't even acknowledge it was my birthday, she didn't even asked if we wanted dessert. When we told her we did and she asked what we wanted. I told her it was my birthday and of course I wanted dessert she replied with "chocolate or vanilla" the look on my face was so confused, I said chocolate or vanilla what and she just stared at me. Again I said chocolate or vanilla what? She said dessert. I said we're going to need a minute. She walked away and my husband and I just looked at each other. I had to ask for a dessert menu because she didn't offer one. She didn't come around with the dessert cart so I had to stop and ask another server what desserts were on the cart. The server I asked looked busy and said she would call our server over. All night it felt like we were bothering people. I explained what happen with our server and she explained that apparently the birthday dessert is a surprise. Idk why our server couldn't explain that. Instead she just seemed rude and confusing. My husband and I were were very put off by all this. We told her vanilla and she brought out a lemon berry cake. I ordered the cream brûlée and it was chunky and cold. Which was a bummer. Didn't taste at all what I had last time. When we asked for the check and the box, she completely forgot about us. She dropped off the tab and didn't come around for 30 minutes. My husband and I had to go get Colby. We had to ask him for the check and for boxes. I'm not going to name the server because I'm going to assume she was overwhelmed and busy.
