I was happy to get my passport stamped and check out this place for a drink and spooky Sunday Scaries comedy show. It is a small venue so be aware of that. They have music most times of the week from what I see on their event's page. Overall it is super dark in there and small. I like the chill cozy vibe. I was able to find street parking when I was here but could see it being challenging on certain nights. read more

We had a great time at White Eagle! The staff were very friendly, food and drinks were delicious, and the rooms are the right price. That being said, do know that for the inexpensive price of the room, there are shared bathrooms and showers (no big deal and we were aware in advance), and the rooms are very small. Ours basically fit our bed. If you are wanting to hang out and lounge in your room, this is probably not the place for you, but if you need decent place to sleep, it's totally fine. read more

If you know me, you know I'm a huge fan of the McMenamin's properties. I've got the passport and everything, and visit the one near my house pretty regularly (the Elks Temple!) During a recent trip to Portland, my boyfriend made a point to make sure we stopped here so I could see it! If you're a passport holder, make sure to bust it out for your stamp and a free appetizer. We are ROOOOKIESSS and forgot our passports at home in Washington, so now we gotta come back again. ;) We just stopped by for lunch, but this has to be on of my favorite McMenamin's bars! Just like the others, it's dark and has a very chill vibe. Lots of music centric memorabilia on the walls, but the back wall is my favorite (see my photo!) White Eagle Saloon has a hotel attached that I'd love to stay at for a night, but I've heard it's very no-frills. But I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't want to drink the night away here and just stumble upstairs for convenience. White Eagle Saloon also does live music every night which is fun. Also, did you know this is apparently the most haunted building Portland?? All of that and I still haven't mentioned the food. I've noticed the Dilly Tuna Sandwich on the McMenamin's menus and have never tried it - which is weird for me, because I LOVE tuna! I decided to give it a try this time around and wow I've been missing out. So good. Love the light toast on the bread too. And of course, the tots on the side were delicious as always. Glad I got to check this spot off the list. We'll be back to redeem those passport offers someday. read more

First time visiting here with my friend. Stopped in for a cider. They have street parking and 5 parking spaces in their lot. Small patio by the lot. Smaller restaurant. They had a small stage for the venues. Eagle themes was strewn all over the restaurant. It was a very small and cozy restaurant. Right by the industrial area. The cherry cider was tart for taste. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge fan of McMenamin's properties, whether it be fashionable or not. The White Eagle Saloon embodies ALL of the unique characteristics of a McMenamin's Property, usually housed in historical buildings of note. The White Eagle Saloon building was originally a warehouse of sorts until two Polish immigrants bought it and changed direction. They named their saloon after the white eagle found on the Polish flag. The space has been used as a music venue and saloon ever since. The White Eagle serves the standard McMenamin's menu consisting of burgers, sandwiches, soup, salad and tots. The menu rarely changes, at least not since I started going in the early 2000s. The bar itself has all the characteristics of an old time saloon; the wooden bar with brass rails, ornate mirrored cabinets for liquor and glasses. With brick walls, well-worn wooden floors, quirky antiques and repurposed Southeast asian architectural elements, the building is charming and eclectic. Hosting an impressive roster of musical acts, the space becomes an intimate performance venue at night. There are only a handful of tables, as well as the bar, so concerts become a standing room/mingling type of affair. Portland is lucky to have historical venues like the White Eagle that pay homage to the past, yet support the up and coming musical acts that cross-cross the US. read more

I really didn't love it. I have honestly never had a good mcmenamins experience. The food was super slow but it was a Tuesday night and I was with a party so it was expected. The bacon cheeseburger was very flavorless. It desperately needed salt. To which the salt shaker was empty. The pepper was dispensing full peppercorn chunks. I am not a drinker so I didn't have any drinks. I won't be visiting again. I also didn't realize I had to specify for Cajun tots so that was a let down. read more

McMenamins locations are eclectic and I like them. Good beer, wine and cocktails, and divey but casual and fun locations. The artwork is also unique and eclectic. On a Friday night, the DJ was great, food and beers fine and would have been a solid four stars but they burned wood in the patio fire pit which wasn't properly dried so my wife and I, who sat literally 40 feet away on the opposite side of the patio were overwhelmed with the smell and our clothes needed to go straight in the wash after we got home. This is the second Mcmenamins where overly smoky fires ruined the otherwise good experience. To the management, kindly consider seasoning/drying your firewood, and maybe check your torch that burns so close to tree leaves it looks like a fire hazard. read more

The service at this particular location is great. The parking lot is super small so be prepared to find street parking. The only downside of this restaurant is that the inside is so dark that if you are facing the windows you can't see the person who is sitting across from you. read more

This is probably McMenamins' most intimate concert venue, and my favorite for that very reason. This long, narrow bar with attached hotel (which I haven't stayed at yet, but it's on the to-do list!) boasts a modest stage at the back, leaving little room between the dance floor and the band, just the way I like it! I saw Garcia Birthday Band here a few years ago, pre-COVID, when I didn't even know what a McMenamins was, and the experience was so much fun, the memory was ingrained into my brain like a McMenamins passport stamp (which I received today, thank you very much)! The semi-covered patio out back, with firepits and plenty of seating, is a great place to hang out, take in some fresh air if things get a little stifling inside, and share a drink with friends, provided the weather allows for it. Great service, great music, and if you're too drunk to find your way home, you might just be able to find a room upstairs to sleep it off! Groovy! read more

The bartenders don't know a "whale" when they see one.. if I get good service and a friendly smile, then I tip very well. I came in on Friday night to see a great band Siamese Twins for some great 80's music.. I sat at the end of the bar with a couple about my age and we were having a great time singing along to the band and enjoying the traditional Mc Menamins atmosphere! Got my passport stamped and all! The bald guy behind the bar was rude, short with me and overall had a bad attitude. After asking if he knew an aviation cocktail or a paper plane cocktail (which he immediately shot down) I landed with a classic old fashioned with Rye bourbon. I watched him make my drink, he didn't use Rye bourbon and added a bunch of cherry syrup to my cocktail. I didn't complain because he seemed irritated with the night. When my drink was finished, he completely ignored me the rest of the night. Like, made eye contact with me and decided to walk away and straighten up the back bar.. there were no other guests to serve as they were dancing and having fun. He did however stop by the couple next to me to check on them and make them more drinks! The gall of this punk! There was, however, a cute girl also working the bar with short curly hair. She did come check on me after my drink was EMPTY for 24 minutes. I timed the dude.. Now I'm also in the service industry and know good customer service. I've worked as a lead bartender at the McMenamins in Bend, OR up in the Broomcloset.. I've worked high-end hotels like the Four Seasons for over 5 years.. I've been in elite restaurants in New York and I've been at local mom and pop shops.. I've seen it all.. so I KNOW this guy's attitude was completely unacceptable. I started with a $50 cash tip in hand (to give to the bartenders bc I believe the girl said they pull tips) every five mins of the guy washing glasses or organizing the back bar, $5 went back into my pocket.. The moral of the story.. I was there to spend money have some hot salty tots but ended up having 1 drink and going someplace else to spend money.. With this bald guy's customer service.. White Eagle is a McMenamins location. Unlike some of their other locations it seems like you are getting quite spoiled during your nights at some of their other hotels but at White Eagle you are a little bit more on your own. The hotel is restored like many of their locations and is fairly old. There are about ten or eleven rooms at this hotel in which you have to use the toilets in the main hallway. Each room has a sink and a bed and that's about it. But it's still nice. White Eagle also has a saloon and it was packed the two times we went in here. It was not worth the effort in our minds to land a table.. simply because there were none available and it looked like those patrons that did have a table weren't going anywhere. The White Eagle has the description of a rock and roll hotel and there was a band playing at happy hour and one playing in the evening. In our room we definitely could hear the band play but that wasn't really a problem with going to sleep. My main hang up was not having a complete bathroom but I knew what I was getting myself into prior so I can't complain about that too much. The White Eagle has no front desk. The facility is too small for that. They do have a phone should an emergency arise late at night when there is no McMenamins staff around (they leave late at night and nobody is around) and it calls the front desk at McMenamins Kennedy School location in which someone will come out to assist there. There is a back door you can go out and get a great view of downtown Portland. The saloon has a patio which looks like fun but it was either not serving customers then or was full... most likely closed due to the weather. There is a tiny parking lot for the hotel but with the saloon being so busy and with the other hotel guests it was full most of the time we were there. There is nearby street parking in which the staff also recommends if the lot is full. read more

I happen to be nearby doing a job with my ex, job ended right about lunchtime. We decided to dine here because there was something for him and something for me. He brought his McMenamins passport, though I forgot mine. He also brought his past passport that he hadn't claimed his reward, so we got free tots! I don't remember what he got, but I got the Mystic. All vegan burger, even the cheese and sauce. I also got a salad. The service was fast and friendly I will have to go back for my stamp and another vegan Mystic Burger! read more

Another great visit to this cute little spot. It's a very small spot for mcminemins. But it's always a blast here. You'd be surprised to know they have a "hotel" upstairs which is really like one or two rooms they rent out for people who reserve it for a night. This spot is very long and narrow so when you walk in you see all the table seating, then the bar and behind that is a stage. They occasionally will have love music here and theres a spot to go dancing. They have a full bar and great food. (Rumor has it this place is super haunted) so be weary! Great spot! read more

This McMenamins is set in a North Portland's industrial but up and coming neighborhood, and just down the street from the Widmer Brewery. I came here for a light lunch of Imperial IPA and tasty soup. I didn't check out the Hotel or get a chance to hear live music, but I'll probably be back for one or both. The White Eagle Cafe and Rock 'n' Roll Hotel building kind of reminds me of the Peerless Hotel in Ashland. Both are refurbishments of a similar looking historical Hotel and with a lot of classic touches. I naturally gravitate to these kind of places, and the somewhat standard McMenamin's model doesn't bother me a bit. read more

I'm so glad that this bar and hotel is still operating during Covid. My friend and I were looking for a place to stay, and we needed to find a "hostel" experience for our vacation in Portland to save money. Man what a gem this place truly is! The atmosphere is very eclectic- very deeply inspired by music history (shout out to the room named after Blind Willie Johnson) and there is poetry written on the walls. The bar/hotel was very accommodating to us even as we extended our stay for another two days. Shout out to the new manager Bailey for giving us a very warm welcome and a fireside chat as my friend Nick and I were ready to leave- I appreciate you directing me as I shared my poetry! While walking to NoPo from the Pearl we decided to stop in for a drink. I've always been curious about this spot despite its 'corporate' affiliations ;) We walked in and picked a sunny table and ordered a couple of drinks. The atmosphere is Saloon-esc with a small stage for music (folks were dancing in the middle of a Saturday afternoon by the time we left), nice jukebox and there's an actual rooming house upstairs. I wanted a spicy mule and while that cocktail wasn't on the menu the lovely bartender muddled some fresh jalapeños magic to make it happen. Yum. This awesome lady bartender (from what I understand it was her first day at this location-dang, wish I could remember her name) and our waiters' level of customer service are the reasons for the 4 stars- if it was based on food alone.... the rating would be different. We also ordered some Scooby Snacks (mini-corn dogs) and something else unremarkable. I don't have high expectations for bar food but I do have some expectation. These were lackluster and not fully cooked/heated inside. We should of said something BUT the drinks and service were good and we let that ride. My recommendation is come for a belly up at the bar or the fire outside. read more

I love white eagle and always have a great time here. Its a great affordable place to crash and the food and drinks are always good. Our last stay was a little uncomfortable due to the heat, we were in room 11 first time being in this room. The window opened up into a weird little brick wall lol. It made for one hot stuffy night drenched in sweat. The room would prob be just fine for cold weather but in the heat was almost unbearable. Other than the rough sleep, everything else was great nice staff. We will def be back soon just hope not to get rm 11 again. Update to last review they updated the rooms with ac now. HALLELUJAH!!!White Eagle is a great place to stay. I love crashing here. The music and food are always great. Came here to see Jumblehead recently and had a blast. This is also a great location to stay at if you are taking in a show at the Moda. Look forward to my next trip. read more

The White Eagle Saloon is a great place to stop. It's McMenamins, how can you go wrong? I stopped in on a night that they had a show on the stage. This made it a bit awkward as the place was packed. All of the isles were filled with chairs to make it a theater setting. This made getting around difficult. It was ok for the show but if you needed any waitstaff you had to navigate your way through the crow as you could only order at the bar an hour before the show. They didn't tell me that when they took my drink order. I waited 40 minutes before I flagged down a server to take my food order. At that time there were no chairs set up for the show and no reason they couldn't be taking care of customers at that point. The servers were also a bit annoyed at the fact they had to serve me. Not good customer relations. The food was good. The show was good. I will have to stop by again when there is not a show going on as I think my experience was tainted because of the packed crowd. read more

So - this is the saloon below the White Eagle Hotel. McMenamin's has done the usual to this property. Kept the history and funked it up Mc-style. The hotel is rumored to be haunted - so that could be fun. Great old bar to belly up to if you can get a stool. The service is what you expect from the Mc's - generally sufficient - sometimes a bit snarly and certainly not speedy. The usual food and of course the McMenamins brews and distilled libations. You're most likely to find me here 6-8 on Fridays for silly music and luscious, acrid Stout. But years ago I had long red hair and was one of the black leather jacket people along Harley Row - grooving to either Rock and Roll, with acid rock sensibilities, or straight-out Blues...both which I still enjoy. But these days If my hair gets any whiter, I might scare people, since this place is legendary for sightings of a woman Ghost. Yikes, what if someone tries to Exorcise me, when I'm just having a good time at the W.E? The GHOSTS presence has been most often reported to be felt upstairs...still a good place to flop, and less expensive than than other beds in the Kingdom. (I may have, um...LEFT A FEW MEMORIES UP THERE MYSELF.) Perhaps the Best musical riff I heard at the White Eagle was a CD Release Party the year before Gary Small won the Native American Music Awards. His Santana-style guitar is perfectly articulated by Graham Lear who formerly played Drums with Santana. They fit like hand to glove. That CD is full of original songs that tell the Indian stories living in Gary's memory. Even at the peak of his Oregon career, Rev Gary Small was both unpretentious and a class Act. Ain't the same without having his band on my musical menu. Instead of Release Party Guests being required to pay a cover Charge for the prime time weekend gig, he offered each a gift to enjoy at their table and take home. I still have that Candle, with his CD Cover label. It feels like good luck. That concert was opened appropriately, by people whose ancestors hunted and fished these NW lands and waters. It was a personal thrill for me to see Gary conduct his business in this way. So respectful, so right. And such damn good music. Thanks to the whole McMenamins family, for keeping the White Eagle tradition alive. I'll give ya 5 Stars if you'll add a good Breakfast and coffee to the White Eagle menu, so I can send more people to stay at your excellent little Hotel, upstairs. It's an uphill walk up to Gravy, on Mississippi proper, and I've done it numerous times in the afternoon, in hot sun or rain, and it's a good little workout. But let's face it, most dominant-culture Americans won't walk 5 blocks, even for a good Omelete, and I don't really like to send people places where they feel they must use cars. The air is that neighborhood is plenty nasty enough already. The Yellow line MAX makes this easy as the place to meet for those attending Rose Quarter, Lloyd Center, downtown and Convention Center events...heck anywhere along the MAX line. The # 33 Fremont bus cruises thru here now too...and after Gateway it zooms on out to the Edgefield and Troutdale, making it a great way to do a Brewery Arts Tour. Yup, all Buses carry Bikes. read more
