We sat at the bar but this place is pretty huge. We saw they had pool tables so we will have to play next time we come. Service was BEYOND disappointing. My friend and I ordered the simplest things that should have taken 15 mins tops -- fries, pita bread with hummus, and a caesar salad with chicken. We waited for 50 minutes (the place was not busy) as we watched two other groups that came WAY after us get their food extremely fast -- even entire burgers and pizzas. After a full hour, and only because we went back up to the bartender to ask, they finally brought us caesar salad with NO CHICKEN and cold pita/hummus (menu specifically said it would be warm). As for the fries? They said there's no fries coming because they didn't put the order in. As for the pool tables, good luck ever being able to play because the wait is so long even on a slow night. Every time I go to this McMenamins location (Ringlers Pub), the food is worse than the prior time and their menu choices are fewer. The servers are usually very good, attentive, and friendly - one star for that. But the food... dang, how can it keep getting worse every time I go there? Interestingly, when the food is served, it visually looks great on the plate: not overly greasy fries (as all McMenamins fries used to be when they used fresh potatoes), the hamburger looks great with a non-smashed bun, and with good looking ingredients. The problem, at this specific McMenamins location, is always in the food prep. The last meal I had there a few days ago - my last meal I'll ever eat there - as usual, presented visually very good. But the fries were like someone took a large bag of salt, added the cooked fries into the bag, rolled the fries around in the salt, then dumped the fries and the salt onto the plate. Note to staff: You have salt and pepper on the tables; we can salt our own fries, if we want salt - or ridiculous, heart attack levels of sodium. I get that places selling alcohol are big on pushing salty foods in order to sell more alcohol - where they make their profit. But overdoing it to this extent just turns people off and sends them elsewhere. Regarding the burger: The small, 6 ounce burger patty was actually raw - bloody red raw - in the middle. Having a super thin 6 ounce patty be red raw in the middle takes some effort at avoiding the heat of a grill. Having a rare steak is one thing. Having raw ground beef in a hamburger is an invitation for some serious gastro issues and potential sickness. I could go on and on with multiple examples of the many times I've been disappointed with the food at this location. I don't know if the kitchen staff is overworked, poorly trained in proper food prep, or angry at their boss. But something is clearly amiss with the food prep at this location. I usually love McMenamins - all of them - but this one? Negatory on that story. Adios, Ringlers. You finally, after many unhappy meals, lost this customer for life. read more

Regardless of your opinion of the McMenamins food, beverages, service, hospitality, or even the entire enterprising empire (and seemingly every Portlander has one they'd *love* to share with you), few can argue that, from a music and entertainment standpoint, they're an uncontested net positive, bringing in artists from all over the world and providing fantastic venues within which we all collectively grow a little richer in spirit. The musical map of Multnomah County (and beyond) would be a dulcet desert, or at the very least more Spartan, without their numerous venues (indoor and out) providing year round live lyrics and limitless libations. Ringlers Pub is uniquely situated directly under what is arguably Portland's most well-known and regarded entertainment destination, the Crystal Ballroom. On its own, it's a fairly standard watering hole, serving decent food and drinks at acceptable prices. Service is good. Location, apart from its proximity to the aforementioned venue is, like all places downtown, a bit of a chore to get to, on occasion...but it does have other perks. Namely, an exhaustive selection of whiskey from around the world, which never fails to make me happy. Yet one little advertised feature shines (secretly) above them all: preferred entry to any concert or event happening above. For a modest price ($15 per person) for each ticketholder, easily spent on a couple shots of high-quality scotch (which elevates any event, IMHO), security will make their rounds ~30 minutes before doors open, check your tickets and receipt, give you a wrist stamp and direct you to a separate queue full of sauced-up spectators that are allowed entry into the ballroom before the general public. Savvy folks, such as myself and my wife, leverage this (only slightly unfair) advantage to cut straight to the front row of any performance and secure the best seats (metaphorically, since you'll be standing) in the house - a perk WELL WORTH paying a premium on top of the price of admission. Portlanders are particularly picky about their preferred pubs and grub, but even the prickliest patron cannot possibly protest the privilege of premature passage for the price of a pint (14 point alliteration combo)! And blissfully, the food and drinks hold up their end of the bargain, and the pub is open late enough (on weekends to accommodate those post-performance hunger pangs. In short: get there early; order the Hammerhead BBQ Chicken pizza; play some pool, pinball or shuffleboard; knock back a few whiskies; see a show; and for Bob's sake, enjoy yourselves! read more

We made a mistake and ignored all the bad Yelp reviews and came into Ringler's at 11 pm after seeing the Of Monsters and Men show, at the Crystal Ballroom. We were hoping to get a drink and some tater tots. And we were staying at the Crystal hotel and doing all the McMenamins things for our McMenamins passports. A server met us at the door, said to grab a seat anywhere and order at the bar. The bar is real wood and super long, like 35 feet long with stained glass accents. Very cool! We reviewed the menu, chose our drinks and I went up to the bar, which is like I said, is pretty long, and the 2 bartenders were at the other end hanging out and chatting with some folks, who were what I assumed to be regulars. I waited and waited and after 1 minutes I went down to the other end and asked, why aren't you guys serving the other end of the bar. The bartender said, "I'm ordering food for wait staff. " I nodded. Hoping for a better excuse. He said, "so what do you guys want to drink?" I looked at the menu, reviewing the choices we made 10 minutes ago; "we'd like the 2 Tiki drinks" The bartender then responded, "the only thing I'm serving you is water and I need to check out the person you're with." Wow. I haven't been refused service in 25 years. That's how old I am. And I understand it's a bartender's right to refuse service to anyone they think might be impaired, or otherwise, but 1) I wasn't and 2) he was a pretty rude about it. I can think of a bunch of ways to say something like that in a nice way. Anyhow, we left and got drinks elsewhere. It's a beautiful bar, the staff are not, at least in my experience. I'm a Big Fan of McMenamins and this is my second visit to this location. I like this location because of the large game room: pinball, billiards and shuffleboard. My husband, and I play shuffleboard and shuffleboard and billiards are free up until 6pm. The food is good and we usually mix it up between the pizza, burgers and salads. Great adult libations too and we like their beer and hard cider. We like to go on Sundays and it's usually very mellow up until around 5-6pm and gets busy after 6pm and especially of theirs a band playing that night. Cool place to hangout. I think we've all been to a McMenamins at this point, so I'll try not to be too repetitive. Ringlers in particular I enjoy because they host Trivia on Monday nights (Bridgetown Trivia), and it's very spacious. Parking can be a bit of a headache because of the location, but I've consistently been able to park in the same area without a headache. The staff seems to change in and out, but has always been friendly. I do enjoy that they carry RC Rootbeer, which is pretty underrated, and there is usually an eclectic group of people patronizing this spot. On certain nights when there is a concert, you also get to people watch! I can't give it a 5th star because the food is always solid but never great, the prices are on the higher side and nothing about it stands out as great. read more

First the basics nice place big bar big selection of booze if that's your thing, there's a gaming area in the back. For the Covid era they have installed plexiglass between booths which is a nice touch. Food, did I say tater tots? I ordered a blue cheese based burger which was cooked perfectly and again tater tots in regular but they also have Cajun which means I will have to travel 800 miles to try those again. Super disappointing experience here despite loving all the other McMenamins we've been to. Bar staff was rude and dismissive, they seemed annoyed when we asked for a menu after sitting down at a spot they cleared for us but didn't wipe down. After ordering food it didn't come for 30 minutes so we asked if they'd mind getting us a to-go box since we had tickets to a show close by. 10 minutes later we told them we may need to leave and she finally walked back to the kitchen to check on it. Brought back food that had clearly been ready for some time, a warm limp side salad because it had been under the warmer and hard burger buns. Bummer experience, felt like they got their tip by closing us out early and could care less after. Maybe the shows are what drives the business so they don't care. The great part about McMenamins across the board is that it is a chain. It is a local one but it is, in fact, a chain. So, if you like their food and/or beer then you will get what you like no matter what location you go to - I have been to a large percentage of the McMenamins properties and rarely have I gotten something off kilter from other spots. I was seeing a show at the Crystal Ballroom, right above Ringlers. Being honest, I normally drop into shows right before showtimes and go just for the actual show. I don't really drink (I drink nothing at shows) and I eat before at home or elsewhere and bring my own water bottle. This particular time I had another thing that I went to nearby so I happened to show up ahead of time to grab a bite to eat first. I sat down to at the bar which was fairly full but not completely tragic. The bartender over by me was amazing, acknowledging me immediately and telling me that food orders were taking about a half hour concerned that I might have plans or a schedule. I loved how honest and upfront she was. I confirmed that I was attending the show upstairs but was ok taking my time. I did already know that I wanted their fish and chips only with a side salad instead of the coleslaw plus an RC. Again, I sometimes just love going somewhere that's a chain I can rely upon when I just want to order and not have to get through their menu or know what to expect. Sure enough - great food...delicious! While I waited two people decided to try my patience and I really have a question for all of you... There were two bar seats next to me but genuinely there was a lot of space between me and the nearest one to me. A girl and a guy came up sort of behind me. I was honestly in shock because the guy was up against me and my chair even though the bar and especially this area was not crowded and they could have stood anywhere ....question for you, my friends: is this a thing now??? Because I have had this happen elsewhere to and sorry but get the F away from me... They were not drunk. Its just so weird that in this not crowded space you feel the need to step foot into my colon. They finally wandered away yet they came back and sat down...ugh.....and were again a bit on the close side. I will say though that besides those two, the bar was full of potentially annoying people but it was a pretty mellow. I was in and out in seemingly no time at all. It was nice to walk out of the restaurant and around the corner right into the Crystal Ballroom. The show was on a Saturday night so I thought it would be insane. The guy behind the bar was nice and explained the different options to us. I like that they have a good mix of food, beer, and cocktails. They even have their own beer which makes me happy. Yep, this is my kind of place. Perfect pub ambiance with dark wooden booths and tables. A row of pool tables that are free for you if you have a few beers. Inexpensive beers and pub fare during happy hour. An impressive selection of bourbon and flights, they even had a drawing of the Pappy Van Winkle on the board! A very cool bartender that offered up suggestions and insisted I try his favorite Irish whiskey with a shot on the house. Oh, and about the coolest mosaic tiled bar you will ever lay eyes on. This was one of our many bar stops during one of the many crazy winter days-o-snow. We wanted to waste time until the next happy hour so we could get burgers. We got a few pints and since there was no one else there we decided to give into the free pool. We are both horrible. After a few shots, we weren't surprised to hear the bartender tell us to start the game facing the wall so not as to have pool balls flying towards the bar. He was clearly a smart fellow. It wasn't long before I knocked the cue ball off the table. After the excruciatingly long game, we chose some tunes off the juke box and got a couple more pints. Ringlers is super-convenient to the Portland Center Stage and Artists Rep theaters, and to Powell's Books. It's in the same building as the Crystal Ballroom and Box Office. The interior is a rustic take on McMenamins' typically funky decor, with a rough wood ceiling and a western feel. There are lots of window tables, looking out on busy Burnside. No outdoor seating, but in summer they go open-air to the sidewalk. The food and drink is fine. They have always had a table open when we arrive. Service is inconsistent, so it"s best not to go here when you're in a hurry. read more

I came here because the McMenamins passport gives you a stamp for stopping by. Easy enough! We came in around noon and the place was empty. It's very dark in here so it's not a great place to spend a sunny afternoon. We had a quick beer flight which featured several local beers. The sour they had on tap was great! We then played a pinball game for another stamp, which was fun! However, we were in and out of the bar within 30 minutes. Play pool for free I'm one of those people who love to play pool, especially after I've had a few drinks and don't suck as much at it. This past summer when my friend and I didn't have plans early in the week, we'd go play pool. We searched around for good joints that didn't charge much and found an awesome deal at McMenamins Ringlers Pub, where pool is free every Monday night. When you compare that to paying anywhere from $5 to $12 an hour, that's an awesome deal, especially if you like to gab and take your time like we do. McMenamins are known for their great microbrews, and my favorite here is the Ruby. It's a funky lighter beer with a hint of rasberry. It may sound strange, but it tastes really good. So on Mondays when you're bumed out that the weekend is over, stretch out your fun here and play pool for free. Tip: Pitchers are the best deal here, but their lemon drop is my favorite in town. Although they offer food specials, stick with the old favorites like the cheeseburger with tots or the turkey sandwich.
