I checked out this bar with a couple of gals my age ( mid 20s) and we had a great time! The bar is exactly as described and the drinks were more like a shot of coke in rum haha it was fantastic!! The bartender was sweet and friendly. Pool was 50 cents and super fun to play. There were clearly regulars which is a good thing. Even though the amazing cook Tim is now gone, and so is the incredible fried chicken, I still love Commodore. I miss you Tim, your fried chicken and your rich and gooey mac'n cheese. I still have the drinks to love. Thank you whiskey for staying. Please never leave me or I just might curl up and die. I love that the awesome bartenders who know me by name and by my drink. It's nice to have a local bar to frequent that treats you so well. Over the years, me and several of my friends have hosted our birthday parties at Commodore. I so appreciate that they set up the back room with a long table, complete with tablecloth. We always bring our own paper plates and plastic silverware so the bar has less clean up to do. But seriously, they go out of their way to make our birthdays special and I thank you for that. I try to avoid this place on a Timber's game day just because I can't stand being surrounded by obnoxious Timber's fans pushing and shoving all over the place, shouting as loud as they can just because they are bros. I stumbled upon this place when I was in town for a conference last week. After stopping by several other bars/pool halls looking for someone to play, I ended speaking with the bartender Bobby. After hearing about not being able to find a good game, he picked up the phone and called some friends of his. I immediately felt so at home that I returned after my conference each night to meet up with the same group of friends. Don't like pool? No problem! You can sit at the bar and heckle cheesy movies on AMC with the other regulars. You may have thought Roadhouse was a great action flick back in the day, but you need to see it now. It was like Mystery Science Theater with a liquor license. They also have pinball and a few other video games, and they serve food as well. Commodore, it's a dive bar, but not in the cool way. The bartenders act like a costumers presence is an inconvenience. The bathroom is revolting, and the patrons can be a bit on the sketchy side. If they got a cook, servers that smile, and kept vagrants out of the bathroom, this place could be an awesome dive, with a perfect local. But for now, it is what it is. 2016 #35 read more

I've been back less than half a dozen times since my scathing review and I'm super honestly thrilled to say it's SO MUCH better!! The new bartendress (Becks) is fantastic! The Commodore rocks! I was on a mission to celebrate my friend's birthday in style..and to our dismay we were unable to get in at the local hot spots. Our taxi driver suggested we give The Commodore a try...and we had the best time. The bartender Brian was so sweet...he put a bunch of songs in on the jukebox for us to select our music for the night . The b-day girl was on a first name basis with Brian by the end of the night and he was quick to serve up more drinks ASAP for us. The birthday girl danced the night away to some tunes and had quite a night! I recommend this place if your crew is the life of the party and looking for a small place where they can be seated and served with some stiffys! read more

Becks! Not only does she make drinks on point every time, she's also very nice - which you don't quite expect from a dive bar, especially on a busy night. She'll literally be working her ass off but still is able to have a good conversation with you and not just dismiss with a short and dead end response. read more

The Comadorre salad is awesome, full of great fresh greens. The burnt burger is truly amazing and I only eat beef once or twice a month. So don't miss it. I tend to think that looking in the windows of a restaurant repeatedly can kind of give an idea of how good it is. If you walk by and it's always busy, then it must be pretty good. If it's always empty, however, there's probably a reason for it. I'd never been particularly keen to visit the Commodore Grill, but one morning in a sense of local pride I decided to stop in. It's only a block away, I'd walked by the place for years... why don't I check it out? Turns out I was better off being uninformed. The service was OK, although the waitress had a lot of trouble understanding that I wanted blueberry compote on my pancakes. She had to return to tell me that they didn't have blueberries. Or the apple compote listed as an option. Basically, I was able to have maple syrup. The rest of the food was fine, but certainly nothing special. The place was nice and quiet, and I was able to read and eat my food undisturbed, but nothing really struck me as making me want to return. read more

5 star dive bar. No harm in coming here. Heavy pours and a jukebox. The place has been here for awhile, and I've been 2 or 3 times at this point. Last night I got food for the first time, and although the menu made it sound really good (homemade tots, house seasoning, stuff like that) it ended up tasting like standard bar fare. The fries were thick cut and fairly starchy, although halfway through a friend spilled an entire glass of vodka on them which might have influenced the flavor. The tots tasted like any other tots, definitely seemed frozen and not homemade, unless the homemade tots were then frozen and used for my dish. Anyway.. We had a few drinks, and I watched the bartender literally fill my glass with vodka and then splash Tonic on top. It was tough to slug down but I appreciated the sentiment, I definitely was giving off a "get me hurting drunk" vibe. Good place overall, and my go to dive on west burnside now that matador (rip) closed. read more

Things have started to change at the old tired Commodore Grill. Fresh blood has arrived in the form of one tattooed, knows her stuff, dipped in awesome Charity. Charity is the chef on the weekends and on some weekdays too. She really has her shit in one sock. Abraham is the kindly older gentlemen who I believe is now running the place. There is talk of hanging art from local artist, there is now music playing in the background and there are whispers of getting new equipment and maybe a convection oven for something like personal pizzas. Slowly, every so slowly they are doing something with the place. Yay! Now let me talk about the food. I highly recommend the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits are "finished" on the grill and it gives them a sort of grilled bread-y, biscuit-y hybrid flavor that can really stand up to the dark sausage gravy. I know they make the gravy on site because I asked. Crumbles of savory pork goodness in every bite! I have been going to the Grill almost every weekend now (easy cause I live upstairs) and I have discovered a new favorite, Eggs Benedict with a side of the biscuits and gravy. Sub out the Canadian bacon for sausage, toss a little pepper on the whole thing and just wow. Oh and did I mention the hollandaise was made from scratch to order? read more

This is the first bar I was allowed to drink at under age. That was a long long time ago. But the Commodore will always have a special place in my heart. That was the days when it had red shag carpet and wood paneling. The red shag was wonderful for when you were so trashed you fell of your bar stool, it would not hurt so bad. It now has more of a sterile remodeled feel to it. But the drinks are still insanely cheap and super strong. And really that is all that counts. Oh and the juke box still rocks! read more

"The Commie" was my neighbor. All my other neighbors loved it dearly, and they couldn't understand when I'd try to get them to meet somewhere else. Anywhere else. I lost and wound up spending countless nights here. I will grant them that it's low key and has cheap stiff drinks and cool drunk bartenders. I like dives, and although this place certainly qualifies, I think it lacks some of the charm that my favorite dives have, like hidden nooks, dark corners, springy booths, and funky art. It's just a little flavorless room with low ceilings. Speaking of flavorless, the food is none too exciting. The same can be said of the fare upstairs in the grill. read more

When I decided to head down to the restaurant portion of The Commodore Grill and Lounge the biggest factor was proximity. This place is literally less than a minute from me. The Commodore is usually pretty empty when I've gone there or walked by, with only a few tables with patrons at any given time. Ordering had been a problem. Being a vegetarian I have to order breakfast without the bacon or sausage, and the waitress here had a hard time understanding that request. In fact, when the food came out it was obvious that the meat had never been struck from the order. I ended up having to send it back to get a new dish. Once I actually got my food it was pretty good. Other than the meat blunder the service was alright. The atmosphere is...eh. There's not really a way to describe it other than just eh. I did end up going back a second time, but with all of the other great food places in Portland, I don't have a reason to go back anymore, even given the proximity. read more

Commodore lounge is the perfect place to meet friends for a cocktail or beer. The staff are all highly knowledgeable and take solid effort to make sure you have everything you need. Great place to meet before, during or after a Timbers game. Very close to the stadium. The owner is also a great guy who I've been served by several times. The bearded bartender was already drunk when we arrived. The jukebox was yielding loudly popular yet someone discreet tunes at maximum volume. All I knew was we were boarding an Amtrak train tomorrow for Seattle and my head was hurting a little. The bartender was affluent in the language of libations and loved to pour drinks and tell me where to go for brunch menana. They had a variety of bottles, a couple of pool tables, a quirky maze of hallways that led to bath & billiards rooms and maybe even an exit. The jukebox was not anything to freak out and call your friends back east for at 1am eastern time (as I found out) but they stay open late and love to have folks to serve to. read more

Stiff drinks, cheap prices, great vibe. Not super divey, but anything but upscale. Their prior location was a fond place for my friends and I, but the newer, larger location is nice gor groups! In the days my husband worked at ART (across the street from the Commode--that's what we nicknamed it), we would frequent this place at lunch. I miss it dearly. If you are expecting top-of-the-line service, fast turnaround for your order, and a completely coherent waitstaff, avoid the Commode. If you just want a relaxing atmosphere and good food, it's an excellent spot. The lounge may be nice, but if I owned the lounge I would change my name just so I wasn't associated with the food. Bad time! I was on my way to work January 5, 2016 and my car died a block away (15th and Alder) I walked to the Commodore since it is close by to get a cup of coffee (which I paid for and tipped) as I waited for AAA to arrive. Was welcomed by a friendly bartender who noticed I was bummed out. A couple hours lapsed and apparently a shift change occurred during that time. I sat there charging my phone and asked for a refill. The new bartender ignored me (a shorter blonde) the first time, so I ask a second time and she tells me that I have been LOITERING and that I cannot have another cup of coffee, she continued, "if you are interested in coffee then you should go to Starbucks down the street." I have proudly given my business to the Commodore Lounge as a pre- and post-funk location for Timber games since the Bitter End changed management a few years back. Not really upset about the whole exchange, but I feel insulted as a paying customer, a patron, and as a proud supporter of the Timbers Army. I needed a little help and kindness in a tough situation. Unfortunately, that was not the case at the Commodore. I will not return again. I will let Timbers Army members know. I hope staff can read this review and know exactly what I am talking about. read more
