I had not been to the newly, remodeled Mule Bar as of yet, so decided to come out and cheer the Niners, and enjoy "The Special" burger. I had come to Stanich's often as we lived in the area many years ago. I will state first...I will be back. Upon entering, Paula, (one of the owners) enthusiastically greeted me and gave me a tour of the renovated sports bar. Wow, so much cleaner and updated for their guests. I also had the fortune of meeting Mark, Paula's husband. It is obvious they really care about the Mule Bar, the guests, and most importantly the staff that is working. Allie was tremendous. Her timing and friendliness was perfect. She even showed me her new 49er hoodie. Love it. The service and the attention to detail by all is not unnoticed. There is a great level of service that never existed at Stanich's. I came for the food, not the service) And of course the burger. The best. It is as good or better than Skyline, Helvetia, or the many others that are mentioned as having a great burger. The menu is new and they even serve breakfast items on Saturday and Sunday. I will be back.

Ahhhhhh!!! "The Special" burger was the "World's Greatest Burger" started by George Stanich decades ago. Since then Stanich is no longer in business until The Mule Bar took over and continues its tradition. It fills my stomach nicely. The Server was friendly and welcoming. The cook can make it the way it is the "Stanich's" way. Good job there!! The inside is still the original look which was left by the Stanich. Nice to see bunch of old banners and frames of old news of where it started. Thank you for giving me the chance to get me that burger for the first time in years!! Yes.. give it a try when you go there!!

Must have been a changeover or a different server/bartender than what others have complained about. I went for lunch on Friday and was greeted and served immediately, super nice dude. Got the burger, waffle fries, and $5 Modelo on draft. Not disappointed at all aside from the slightly inflated price, but hey, gotta keep the lights on and open more than the last spot here! Obviously it's not the same exact recipe as the OG Stanich's burger, but a pretty close impersonation. The bar itself has been made-over beautifully, but still has the aesthetics of the old spot minus the "dinge". Definitely coming back for a game or two once football season starts.

The service is Excellent! I like what they have done with Stanich's. It appears very clean. They have removed most of the pennants from the walls and ceiling. There are still a significant number, but not overwhelming the place. We tried the mushroom Swiss burger and it was very good. It's a little slower than the old Stanich's, but they have half the staff and are still gaining their footing. I'm happy this place is back open and hope they have a successful business going forward and into the future.

Haven't tried the food yet, but we've stopped in for drinks a few times since The Mule opened. I love the warm coppery vibes, fireplace, and wood cabin feel. I did try one of the mules (as in the classic ginger drink) before and it was very good! This time, I'm just having a beer.

A dive bar, a hole in the wall, a pit. The regulars, I'm sure will like it just that way. MMA on…read morethe television, Keno on another and video games and shuffleboard collecting dust in the back area. I guess you could call it just another Saturday night, but it was a nice night out and I'm sure many were somewhere, anywhere downtown or beyond. All of ten people at the bar area including the bartender. A special reads"sloppy joe's" on a sign towards the rear but no one is eating it and I'm sure for good reason. Options of jerky, candy bars, chips, nuts and gum are just behind the bar and are probably safer choices. Steelers and Cubs items are all about the bar area, so someone there is a fan. This looks like a cool place, right? They have a small selection of good beers but PBR seems to be the choice of the guys next to me. The woman in the seat by me, chatting with bartender, is choosing some of the local beers while guys at the far end are casually watching a Cardinals baseball game. The rest of the bar and the patio are empty. I don't know if that's normal, but it is for tonight. The beer is decent in price and I nursed a local IPA while I watched some of the MMA fights. I was just there to unwind and it's a great place to do that with no expectations. It's not a place I'd go to often, but I'd go back. Enjoy.

The place is a total dive complete with leftover smells from the smoking era. What's it been, three years now? Yickkkhhh! When the smokers go outside they're just too close to the front door so the place ends up smelling like an ashtray anyway. The carpet is ratty and looks like something people have been wiping their feet on for 30 years. Oh wait. They have been. The crowd is friendly and we participated in several games of friendly ping pong. Hey, I almost won one of those losing by only 3 points. There don't really seem to be any undesirables here and the crowd is mixed, both young and old who actually seem to communicate with one another. It didn't seem like a Frank Sinatra type of crowd but that's what was playing when we walked in. To sum it up, this is a friendly, gross, disgusting, divey, ratty neighborhood bar. There seems to be something for everyone here, from ping pong and pool tables to pinball and shuffle board. If you can get by the smell and appearance, hey, you're in.

However, they recently started charging $5 PER PERSON if you want to play any games, including ones you bring. The reason given is table space, but it doesn't take any more space to play games than you would be taking to eat your food. And nobody shares tables at restaurants with strangers anyway, they are already losing seating space by you dining there, just like any restaurant. It makes no sense. Wife and I spent $20 per person on our food, then another $10 for the table charge to play our own card game while we waited for the food, then tip calculated on top of that (i do 20%). So our $40 meal cost $60. Quite the markup. We were there for less than an hour and there were other empty tables the whole time -- so what was the charge for? Loved this place as a spot to gather with friends but if it's gonna be anywhere from $10-20 table tax before tip I can't justify it. It feels bad, makes you feel like you're getting scammed. Gonna find a new spot. Edit: I want to clarify my experience regarding the below reply. In the past we were offered to rent one of the businesses' board games for a flat fee. We were never charged before for bringing our own, nor charged per person in our group. I understand renting gaming tables but that rate last time, especially if scaled into a larger group and applied pre-tip, is just too high for us to keep coming back.
