Given the ages range from 70-90, I'm dubious many would respond "just chillin" if I enquired as to exactly what they were up to. But I like the Ettrick. It's a traditional, homely bar and the cream of the crop in Kilpatrick. Attracting a cross section of the local crowd, it comprises of a grand bar area and a vast lounge, capable of accommodating large numbers. It's also noticeably cheap, for instance a pint of Tennent's and a roll and sausage (genuinely the most expensive item on the menu at 1.20) will set you back 3.50. Although the pub does show football on large screens, colours are strictly forbidden. First and foremost, this is a community resource for the people of Kilpatrick as a whole, which is why owners work hard to provide entertainment six nights of the week. Never on a Wednesday though.

Drinks are cheap (my boyfriend's Tennents was only £2.30 and my Corona was £2.80). The Ettrick is an example of that dying breed; a true local pub where everyone from eighteen to eighty can feel welcome. A case in point; the last time we visited, a group of teenagers were sitting at a table by the door whereas the table beside us was occupied by a single elderly man nursing his pint with his Daily Record and Evening Times. Another table clacked with the sound of a group of elderly men playing bridge. If you happen to be in the area I would highly recommend The Ettrick for a drink or three.

Recently refurbished, they have split the main bar away from the Bistro to allow children to enter and reduce the noise. Good plan! The menu has been overhauled and they don't have as many dishes on the menu as before which is a lot better for the kitchen ensuring quality over quantity. I ordered King Prawns with Calamari, my mom Haggis Fritters and my sister in law Black Pudding in Breadcrumbs with a Chilli Sauce. No complaints. They were tasty and well presented. We then ordered Balmoral Chicken, Fish & Chips and a Chicken Burger. Portions are extremely good for the price, food was cooked fresh to order and of a good quality. There was only 1 staff member within the bistro when I was in looking after 4 tables, which was okay but we did have to wait at times to be served; not her fault though. The dishes are a little expensive for a Bar Bistro in Erskine, but you'd expect to pay more if you dined in Glasgow for the quality and size of the portions. Our bill for 2 courses and numerous drinks for 3 people came to around £56. Not THAT bad when you think of it. All in all, the Whuppity Scourie is much better than it's predecessors and I hope it's hear to stay.
