First, and by far most important: There was a woman sitting at the oyster bar coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and a little red in the face. Clearly not 100% healthy. Makes you think "why would somebody go to an oyster bar, sick, in the time of COVID" Turns out IT WAS AN EMPLOYEE and her family. Possibly the owner as she was the person called on to solve some confusion at the register. And they were eating Chick-fil-a food openly spread out on the bar. Next, the food is quite tasty. Except the butter for the oysters is actually margarine. And scooped directly into the little plastic cup with the same unwashed fingers that handle everything else. Next, the service is completely incompetent. We ordered three things. Two people got most of their food in a timely manner. The third person sat nibbling saltines with an empty water glass during the time the other two finished their food. We had to ask for utensils. When we asked about an ETA for the third lunch, the server wandered off without ever answering. They folks that got to eat first ordered 2 dozen oysters, but the second never arrived. After a question or two they told us the steamer was down. At least they did take the second dozen off the bill. That and the excessively loud music during lunchtime makes us uninclined to go back any time soon. Chick Fil A is clearly a better option. read more

The oysters were what we were there for because my husband loves them. The prices were very good and he had a dozen raw. They were pretty large but he said they were excellent tasting. There isn't much atmosphere here. The service was rather lacking as well. A lot of younger employees all gathered around having their own personal discussions or on their phones rather than paying attention to paying customers. They don't have a regular beer list so you just have to keep asking which seemed irritating to the barmaid. They do have a list of craft beer. They have a good number of the basics. We didn't try anything else foods use and didn't see anything else served. So we couldn't judge that. The menu had lots of choices. I would say the prices are moderate. We were looking for a quick meal before heading back to the hotel so we stopped by the Troff. The food came out really fast and the hush puppies were the best I have had outside of Annapolis. I ordered the Yellow fin and was not disappointed, it was cooked perfectly and came with wasabi and soy sauce. I've been visiting this area for about 5 years, and this little hole-in-the-wall oyster bar served me the best dinner I've ever had in the Eustis-Mt Dora areas! I had the Alaskan Snow Crab Cluster Appetizer and Blackened Redfish Dinner with the crispiest most delicious fries. It was phenomenal! My mother had the Lemon Pepper Redfish Dinner with green beans and fries, and my grandfather had the Twin Chicken Breasts with green beans and fries. Both raved about their dishes too! The service was great and the prices are fair. The outside is not that appealing, but don't judge a book by its cover, which is especially true for this place. The food speaks for itself! When we have guests from out of town we enjoy taking them to our special places. The Troff has been on that list for years. Today we stopped in for their fish fry. The light, flakey haddock has been replaced by mahi fish. Our opinion is Troff needs to go back to Haddock. Waitstaff were excellent. Attentive, not intrusive. Still a good spot. read more

Don't be fooled by looks ! The restaurant has awesome food ! We've dined here several times while visiting the area . Their raw oysters were shucked and served right in front of us ( while seated at the bar ) - very tasty ! I've had the shrimp tacos & they are definite must have again. Been going to the troff for years..... sadly the shrimp tacos and Rockefeller were sold out, the peel and eat was excellent and the beers were cold as usual. We stopped for lunch. This has to be the noisiest restaurant/bar in Florida. Not only was the music they were playing loud, it sounded like they dropped every pot, pan and dish. Randomly found this restaurant while on a road trip and the reviews looked promising. It's a very small place but the setup is very unique. We had 2 dozen raw oysters, an order of the Rockefeller oysters and 10 hot wings. They were all beyond delicious. Some of the freshest oysters I've ever had. Love how the guy prepares the raw oysters right there at the bar for you. He was great as was our server. Not much for small talk but friendly and kept our drinks full. Very casual atmosphere with plenty of tv's for sporting events. This place is def worth checking out, even if it's slightly out of your way. I think we will definitely be back, someday. read more

Love it!!! This place is exactly what it says it is...and they do it perfectly! It is a little dive bar - go in, belly up to the bar and order a dozen (Or more) oysters. They will stuck them right there in front of you and sit them up on the bar. When you are finished just toss them behind the bar into the troff. The oyster are supurb...large, fresh and delicious. The other menu items are good as well (I love the hushpuppies too!) We seek this place out everytime we are in the area and you should too. Yum! read more

We've given this place 2-3 tries now and I'm not impressed. Tonight we went as a family and our first server got our drinks and was friendly then we never saw her again and eventually another server came.. he was also friendly but maybe overwhelmed because he was not very attentive. I got the steamer- My crab legs were salty and overcooked, my clams were undercooked, the fish dip was very fishy (not a concern since I mainly wanted the other items) but my peel&eats were yummy. My mom ordered the clam strip basket that was forgotten about until we said we hadn't gotten it then it was mostly fries. The rest of the table got oysters and they seemed happy with them, their only complaint was they prefer them at the bar because then they don't get cold. Fun spot. But not particularly noteworthy as a great food destination. Go for the cold beer, sports on tv, a juke box, and good conversation with your friends. Some areas that need work: the traditional oyster bar where oysters are being shucked right in front of us missed badly when the half-shell being placed in front of us has such tiny oysters in them, we couldn't tell which ones we had already eaten and which are still to be eaten. And our shucker was a very genial fellow, but he could do such a better job by simply loosening the entire abductor muscle from the shell on each oyster he opens so we can release and enjoy eating each oyster cleanly out of its shell. There is a right way to shuck oysters: this friendly hard-working fellow needs a refresher course. Secondly, no one working here knows if the heavily-advertised steamed shrimp are wild-caught or farm-raised. Yeah, it is that important to us Crackers who only support our fellow Floridians who work so very hard offshore catching shrimp. The rubbery flavorless farm-raised version have no place in a locally-owned Florida seafood restaurant. Somebody needs to teach the wait-staff what working in the seafood industry in Florida means - know your locally-sourced seafood. Please. We'll keep going back because this is a fun place. But we would love the ownership so very much more if they would address these few misses in putting the best product possible in front of their loyal patrons. read more

We came here twice in two days. I'm officially in love. The first day we came in, a little old woman was drunker than a skunk and fell down, creating a buzz of activity. Because of the ensuing drama the service started out a bit slow, but once the food and drinks started flowing I was a very happy lady. Raw oysters: About $8 for a dozen outside of happy hour- otherwise they're under $7. Delicious! Big, fat, juicy oysters shipped in from Texas, these bad boys were great. I ordered them both times we were there and both times was extremely satisfied. I can't speak for their aphrodisiac powers, but if my taste buds could sigh with contentment... Live Maine Lobster: $15 for a lobster as big as my head! Boiled up with some corn and a few sides, it was an exceptionally simple presentation that complimented the fresh lobster beautifully. The meat was juicy & perfectly cooked, preserving the natural lobster brine/juices that I greedily slurped up. This was the first time I was able to share a delicious, well-prepared lobster with my boyfriend and he was a quick convert. Chicken Wings: We tried three flavors; Garlic Butter (just meh), Hot (good combination of vinegar, spices & heat! We liked these better than the other hot wings we've tried in town) and the ragin' cajun (WINNER!). The wings themselves have a good combination of crispiness to their exteriors with juicy meat, all blanketed in a sauce. The ragin' cajun had the best combination of flavors from our perspectives. Both times we were here we tried some wings and the boy was really taken with them. Oyster Chowder: Thick, creamy soup with great seasoning, plump pieces of oyster, tender bites of potato; I had two orders last time we went because I don't know when I'll be able have any again that's THIS good! The beer selection is on par with most of the places around town, but happy hour is where it's at: two for one drinks! It's cheap enough that friendly locals might just offer to buy you a beer if you strike up a conversation with them and if they don't, no pain for your wallet. This is a home Florida seafood restaurant, it's simple, good service(As long as you're nice too. Lol) with andincredible Good food. We started with 2 doz oysters from Louisiana(They were great, good time of year for them) a doz steamers, and mussels in a bur blanc sauce- they were all great For entrees we had; red fish lightly blackened, Copino,all you can eat fried fish(Cod), and a fried seafood trio. We finally sat ourselves and waited for them to clean the table. We ordered 2 of the Fisherman;s Platter. The seafood was cooked extremely well. We had ordered two platters and between 2 of us we could only eat one and took the other one home. Several times we had to get up from the table to get our drinks and other items. Not somewhere I would take a formal date for a romantic evening. Overall, I would definitely go back and not have as high expectations for service. Sit at the bar to eat and drink. There is a dive oyster bar in Eustis called The Oyster Troff where it is like Cheers, everybody knows your name. Even for us first timers, the locals that were there were super friendly, as were the staff. The place is definitely nothing to look at but that is pretty typical of oyster places. There is one main oyster bar that goes out and back in a narrow "U" shape. There was a back room with another bar, pool table and dart boards but this area was closed this Saturday early evening. On the side is a larger dining area with tables where not a soul was sitting. But if you're eating oysters you want to sit at the bar so you can chuck your used shells into the trough behind the bar. Our shucker, we heard someone call him Mike, was very friendly and fast at his job. He actually offered my 2 year old son a dollar if he'd try his first (steamed) oyster. We talked him into taking a bite and the entire bar got a laugh out of his reaction as he swallowed the bite and shivered. He earned that dollar! We ended up getting to know some of the other patrons and were buying drinks and passing oysters back and forth, it was really a lot of fun! The oysters were really good, nice and salty, and they give you real lemons, not lemon juice, which is nice. The conch fritters were ok but had some really crunchy batter parts so that when you bit into them it almost felt like a piece of rock! My complaint about the place would be that they only had 1 shucker and 1 server working. That wasn't a problem when we got there at 6pm but by the time we ordered that second bucket around 7pm we had to wait quite a while for Mike to shuck other's buckets first. These two workers were running around like crazy because the small bar was now full. Still, it isn't a place where you hurry and we were having fun so it was tolerable. Also, when we got our bill it was $76. It was just a hand-written bill so we weren't even sure what cost what. This is what we got: 2 buckets of oysters, 10 peel and eat shrimp (30 cents a piece), conch fritters, a kid's meal and drinks. We are still trying to add it up! I know the oyster buckets were $23, which seems a little pricey unless they are high because it's off-season or because of the oil spill. Either way a bucket at Lee and Rick's in Orlando cost $18 on our last visit. We will definitely be back; we are just going to watch the prices a little more closely! read more
