Met family members here for a nice lunch. I ordered the 1/2 Cob salad one of their lunch specials. I requested all Romain lettuce instead of iceberg and Romain mix. My nine-year-old niece insisted we go here during a family visit. She has great taste in shoes, video games and vintage tv shows-how could her culinary advice be wrong? It wasn't! This casual, comfy, family-friendly sports bar has three main rooms, with the large bar in the middle and two dining areas on either side. Nothing fancy-just warm and inviting with lots of tv monitors and a huge menu. I finally settled on the fish and chips. What a huge portion for $17! (Four pieces with fries) My sister-in-law loved her burrito bowl... Mom totally enjoyed her pulled pork sandwich and cole slaw... and my niece and sister both loved their burgers and tots. Our second time here. This time we tried the weekend breakfast. Service was a bit slower but there was only one server. I had the chicken fried steak which was certainly a offshoot from the norm. Never had a chicken fried steak that was not "fried in batter". This one was a thicker steak covered with sausage gravy. Ordered extra gravy which helped me through steak. Hash browns, eggs and English muffin we good Wife had Denver omelet. She said it was good but they used a sweet onion. Certainly non traditional. My wife and kids went here today for lunch based on my recommendation. Elsa J provided the worst service in history. It took her 5 minutes to greet my family and then didn't come back for another 15 minutes to take their order. She never refilled a drink. The food order came out tasting like it sat under a heat lamp for 20 minutes. For a place that I like to recommend I'm very disappointed. I will rethink recommending this place to anyone. The tavern on main has excellent food and a good (rotating) beer selection. However, the prized gem of this restaurant is the bartender - Andy. Holy cow!! My family stopped in on the way to a boundary waters fishing trip and spent a few nights eating and drinking with Andy as our host. We've been a fan of this restaurant for years. As usual, we started our Lenten season with their fish fry. These folks know how to prepare battered cod! Not too much batter, and moist, perfectly cooked fish. Served with coleslaw and crisp tater tots, and accompanying sauces. Perfect meal. I love this place but they are starting to get too pricey for being the neighborhood dive. I go to local finer establishments order same or better wine and drinks and this place is at least $1.50 higher per drink. Yeah I know that sounds minimal but it adds up. Four of us stopped in for lunch mid-afternoon on Thursday. We found the dining areas and bar quite busy with patrons obviously enjoying themselves. The service was a tad slow but we were in no hurry, so we had time to peruse the very extensive menu. There are so many tasty choices from which to choose, narrowing down our orders was a bit of a challenge. The Tavern's Famous Artichoke Spinach Dip is featured as an appetizer and as an ingredient of some of the sandwiches and wraps. Wow! It is definitely worth the visit! The Tavern On Main is classic small town Minnesota. Comfortable. Cordial. Like dining with an old friend. Best of all, especially these days, the prices were very reasonable, especially given the quality and quantity of our entrees. We were there around 2 in the afternoon. Ordered one drink apiece, sitting at the bar, and then asked for our bill, handing the bartender $10. We were told that just covered the drinks. We said that was pretty expensive for such a light drink. Rather than saying "I'm sorry you feel that way," like any bartender worth his salt, saying, instead, with quite the sarcasm, "it was a shot of liquor. People make stronger drinks at home for themselves -- I, for one, do." My brother was in from California and we wanted to bring my brother to try one of our go to places. A little disappointed. My dad sat down and realized the chair had old food on it and was now all over his pants. The waitress Renee appeared to be in pain. She was limping around but was trying her hardest. We got the Smokehouse burger. It's a burger, with refried beans and pulled pork. It's suppose to be topped with coleslaw but we had to borrow the coleslaw from my sons dinner to top it with. The burger was delicious. Good flavor needed a little more bbq on it. Now my son ordered the dinner special which was a 1/3 rack of ribs. Unfortunately they were extremely dry and disappointing. And was left the chiller with a bit extra Trying the tater tots and broasted chicken. Tater tots were semi warm. The broasted chicken was moist (al white meat) but was posted as secret spice blend. Whatever the secret spice blend is did not taste anything other than flour. Added my own salt which I Rarely ever do do to lack of seasoning. I was expecting the actual broasted breading which would have been perfect. Sorry to my taste total lack of seasoning in the breading material. Fairly small large space with the bar seating all high tops, outside patio area as well As a smaller dining area with salad bar. Salad bar looks well stocked and tasty. My girlfriend and I stopped in for a bite about 11:30 Sunday September 15th. I write because the bartender lacked any personality whatsoever. Very stand-offish, bordering on rude. Not only with us but with everyone. OK. Maybe he was having a bad day. I asked for the tab and was given it with items we never ordered or received. He saw me reading it and said he had made a mistake. How could he have done that? What other couple in the whole establishment let alone at the bar ordered exactly what we did plus those two additional items? Is he a crook? That's how I feel. Stumbled on this place on a Wednesday evening. The parking lot was full but it is large enough inside that we got a table right away. It is a loud but lively place with a bar on one side with tables and just table seating on the other. Wait staff was very pleasant and helpful. Happy hr was $3 off all apps and discounted drinks. Wings were very good as were the cheese curds. The southwest salad didn't have much flavor for our taste but was a very large salad and we were Abe to share. We were in town for a funeral and had no idea where to go for a good meal and a stiff drink, so we asked the front desk at our hotel. They recommended The Tavern on Main and it did not disappoint. We ended up going three times during our stay! The first time we were a party of 8 and the server did a tremendous job taking care of all of us, even bantering back and forth and lightening our moods. I don't remember her name but she was awesome!! The food was also REALLY good. I ordered the poutine - fries smothered with their 16-hour brisket and some amazing sweet & creamy bbq sauce. A couple people ordered the walleye fingers and raved about them. The second time we went, we just got drinks, and again the server (a different one) was great. She was bright, friendly, and patient. I met a friend here for lunch today but I have been here many times before all the way back to Millers on Main days. The food here is always great and has improved over the years. I had cauliflower bites that were a little spicy and were awesome. I also had the Texan burger, I requested medium and thought like most places it would be more well done however it was exactly medium. I was so surprised at how well prepared the burger was. The Tavern on Main is a re-spin of Miller's on Main The decor is a step up. Much nicer. The food is pretty much the same with a few new twists. The "Small Block" and "Big Block" are still on the menu. We tried the Lino Lucy. It was ok, but I've had better. The wife got the blue cheese version. I got the pepper cheese version. The tots were a good side. The fries were that coated style - not my favorite. If you liked Miller's on Main, you'll like this better. If you're new to the area, its a newly decorated bar - with bar food. read more
