The Sun Shoppe Café, Historic Downtown Melbourne, 540 East New Haven Avenue, Melbourne, Florida 32901- 3-Stars If you are looking for the big city hipster experience in Brevard, you can get it in Downtown Melbourne at the Sun Shoppe Café. This small coffee shop has been home to local glitterati for decades. While ownership has changed, the vibe hasn't. The current owners are Asian, and this joint now hums like a perfectly tuned engine. While the slacker mentality is exuded by the customers, it is not by the staff. Ash works the counter. She may look the hipster part, but her performance is exhilarating. Sadly, the food is no great shakes. Everything is average, like so much I have encountered and written about on the Space Coast. I dislike battology, but must mournfully write yet again about ho-hum fare served at another Brevard County dining establishment. Nothing spectacular. Nothing special. Average ingredients. Average prep. The Spicy Tuna Melt was flat and tasteless--nothing spectacular--using low-grade tuna fish. The Double Espresso was fine--nothing special--made with a cheaper bean. Even the Mango Berry Smoothie--average ingredients, average prep--lacked punch. The Big Boy says, "If you want a cool vibe, this is a great place to meet up. Hopefully your conversation will be so engaging that you won't notice your mediocre food and drink."

SO CUTE. The Sun Shoppe was my bf's childhood study nook-- it's just the most adorable neighborhood cafe in downtown Melbourne. Cozy, quiet, and POC-owned :-) Few COVID safety measures in place-- some staff wear masks, surfaces are sanitized, but that's about it. With the spacious seating, it's pretty easy to socially distance on your own. Parking is most viable in the sprawling side streets. Service is super quick + kind. CALIFORNIA ROLL: Ok, I honestly got this out of curiosity what their interpretation of "California" fare was-- and they're not wrong. Crisp greens + avo + deli meat + veggie wrap? This is...... Accurate. Sans chips/jalapeños, this is LA juice bar food (without the price!), and I'm not even mad. CHAI: Hype is real. I don't like cinnamon, and I liked this. It's no wonder half the reviews here rave about it-- creamy and silky, balanced with a spicy kick! I'm a fan. We saw plenty of students and remote workers here, along with older folks looking for a quiet respite for reading. I could definitely see myself stopping in on the regular!

The Sun Shoppe has expanded its menu so much over the years! While their hours have shortened because of the pandemic, it's still the perfect place to grab a quick bite or try a new kind of specialty drink into the evening. Their coffee is great, but my favorites are the chai and Thai teas! They have their own cute stickers now, and I'm always checking for new board games in the corner by the door for customers to use! The bathroom was also recently painted to make room for more doodles. I think the location is the absolute best between all the street parking, the proximity to everything downtown, and the wonderful staff! It's right next to a nice pottery painting spot, and they never mind it when I bring over my orders to sip on while I get artsy. If you're a Florida tech student, they used to (and probably still do) offer student discounts. But the prices are already very affordable!

A shot of the interior of The Sun Shoppe. Not much going on during the morning... the way I like it.

For those who live in Melbourne, FL, there is one "it" coffee shop when it comes to the Historic Downtown Melbourne area, and that is The Sun Shoppe Cafe. Located west of the "core" of the area, it has become a to-go spot for many people, especially the younger crowd. To this day, it is still the place to go to relax, have a nice conversation with a cup of coffee. As mentioned above, The Sun Shoppe Cafe (which will be shorthand to Sun Shoppe for the rest of the review) is located just west of the main Historic Downtown Melbourne area, right next to The Escape Room (old building that used to be Vinyl Request Records). It is a decent-sized corner coffee shop that can seat about double the number of guests a typical Starbucks can hold. Upon entering, you'll notice the decor is set for a beach mood. It works despite being dated. You'll also notice they serve bakery goods, coffee, and pastries. I have eaten many of their bakery goods and would suggest the hummus and pita bread as well as their lox bagel. I also like the PB & bananas bagels too. As for coffee, coffee is coffee and you can't really screw it up unless you try. I personally like their cold drinks especially their iced chai drink and their smoothies. The only gripe I have with this place is at times, it can be really crowded. I know that's good for Sun Shoppe as a packed building means business is good, but I know nobody likes waiting around just for coffee and coffee shop baked goods. Besides that, it is a great place and one of the few local coffee shops from back in the day that is still around.

We absolutely love this place and have been coming here for years. Their prices are very reasonable and the service is always the best. They are a local cafe that serves breakfast type items; bagels, muffins, etc. Sandwiches, salads, coffees, smoothies, etc. My only negative is they only have almond milk as a non-dairy option. If I could have my way I would request oat milk, but that is not a big deal and I will continue to visit here regularly.

Okay, let's be honest.. is the Sun Shoppe actually "Good™" Or is it just lovable because of nostalgia? The answer is unknowable!! The coffee is certainly not the best in town, but if you're a Melbourne local, you've more than likely remember spent a few hours here doing home work or work-work, can remember back when they used to have open mike nights (not sorry those days are over!), know the smell (like a coffee/baked goods smell) that will be on your clothes when you leave, etc. The Sun Shoppe is the place we all come back to when we want to sit with an old friend. So yes, I think that makes it good. It's a family owned place, the family is so sweet and somehow so good at remembering their patrons! The staff is always so nice and helpful, I've asked advice on what to order on more than one occasion and they always help talk me into a slice of cake. One of my favorite things to get here is their Super Nova Lox on an Everything Bagel and Iced Chai. Even just thinking of it right now I'm like "Oh yeah, I'm definitely getting that for brunch this weekend.." In conclusion.. I guess this place is pretty good. P.S. I would like to commend them for getting new tables and chairs after having the same ones for over a decade!! Again, I get this place runs off nostalgia but new furniture and decor is a great move

    Styrofoam? Really, do better!

The Don's Super Italiano was served on fresh bread and was a large portion. Al of the meats were flavorful and the veggies fresh. The Melbourne Bulldog was a delicious ham and turkey sub made my way. **INITIAL REVIEW**…read more Out of all the sub and hoagie restaurants located within southern Brevard County, specifically Palm Bay, Malabar, and Bayside Lakes, the one location that is both historic and iconic is Mash Hoagies (which I will shorthand simply to Mash for the remainder of this review). Mash has been in the same location for literal decades in the Palm Bay West just north of Winn Dixie (soon to be Aldi) and Little Ceasar's. First and foremost, Mash isn't the most visually-appealing place to eat. The dining room setup and colors are definitely out of the 70s, the time when the show the restaurant is based on, M*A*S*H*, came out. The walls right above each both showcases handdrawn charicaures of the actors in character. The cleanliness of the restaurant is up-to-par but more on the lines of better than fast food but just as good as fast casual. What makes Mash one of the best places to get your hoagies are three things: the family friendliness, the better-than-fair prices, and the overall deliciousness of the food. As an example, I will describe one of my orders with them, the "Italian Special" known as the Hawkeye. Named after the character, Hawkeye Pierce, played by Alan Alda and Donald Sutherland, the footlong sandwich consists of ham, capicola, salami, and provolone. You can load any sandwich to the brim with basic ingredients with premium ingredients costing a little bit more. But for $12 for a homemade behometh of a sandwich that is sure to feed a regular person three meals a day, it is a delicous steal. Add on top that the staff is friendly and sometimes will have a nice conversation with you while they make your sandwich. As mentioned earlier, Mash is homegrown with multiple decades serving the community. They have developed a family feel that has kept them more than alive and kicking through the highest highs like when Palm Bay West was the "it strip mall" for Palm Bay (because it was the only major strip mall in Palm Bay) to downward slumps like the (illegal?) pandemic. My suggestion is Carissa. She is very kind and she's been the one to make my sandwich almost every single time I have been there since I started Yelp (Eliting!). I must stress that overall, Mash does not have "the best" particular sandwich I can think of off the top of my head, but they are more than satisfactory and acceptable. For example, I can name a couple of Cuban restaurants that do better Cuban sandwiches than Mash (Hemingway's Tavern and El Ambia for example), but you can't go wrong if you want a Cuban from them either for convenience, price, etc. Given the many times I have been here pre-Yelp as well during my Yelp career, I am going to give Mash a five-out-five star rating. They've always been delicious with good food, good prices, and good service. As for restaurants within Palm Bay West, you can't go any better.

Facility: This is a small place located in a strip mall with Winn Dixie a few stores down. There are some tables and chairs to sit on if you want to stay. They have a ton of snacks out along the counter where you order and drink station on the opposite wall. Service: 5/5 Megan helped me and she was nice and patient. She talked me through the popular items and helped me narrow down my selection since there are a lot of choices. I ordered my food to go. I have to give extra kudos to the way they so thoughtfully packed the food. The sandwich was in nice thick paper so the oil won't leak through. They put a piece of cellophane over the salad to help keep it in place. They actually put napkins, utensils and crackers in for my salad. And they put things in separate paper bags for protection. Food: Italian - 4/5 unfortunately the bread was stale. But the meats and toppings were delicious... could use a little more salt and pepper though. But I love the way they wrapped a piece of ham around the toppings so they don't fall out when you take a bite. With fresh bread, this would have been a 5/5. Chef salad - 5/5 this salad was giant! Loved the toppings and the value for your money. Cheese sticks 2/5 They cook these in an air fryer and it is very obvious. Maybe some people prefer it this way, but the breading is just too bread-y when they don't fry it traditionally in oil. It's not as crunchy and it is lacking some of the flavor from the oil. I know you are saving my heart some of the bad fats, but maybe it's just a personal preference but I just don't like these cooked in an air fryer. Overall: I like this place. I will come back and try some more options.

**INITIAL REVIEW**…read more Most of my fellow Yelpers know if food were categorized by a genre, breakfast and brunch has a special place in my heart. Ergo, I am on the constant search for more breakfast and brunch places to add to my repertoire. With that in mind, I must stress that Historic Downtown Melbourne a.k.a. Melbourne Main Street has an amazing number of breakfast and brunch places. But the one I admire the most is The Roots Restaurant Tavern, which I will shorthand simply to The Roots for the remainder of this review. Though an address is provided, it must be stressed The Roots is a little "off the mainstreet" of Melbourne Main Street. Just west of the train tracks, the road splits in which the northernly direction is the continuation of New Haven Ave. or the actual Melbourne Main Street. The Roots is on the southern road, right next to The Iron Oak. Take note that The Roots is quite a cozy location. On the outside, The Roots has this look of an old saloon out in the wild west. There are a few tables and chairs for outdoor seating, excellent for people-viewing while eating your meal. Inside, The Roots looks delightfully tacky with all the knick-knacks hanging around and about on the walls. Imagine how Cracker Barrel used to look before the new CEO decided the decor should be more minimalist. But my statement on how The Roots looks small from the outside definitely shows when you are inside, too. The place is small. They definitely utilize the space as best they could, with large party seating being in the back for only one party. Still, take note of this limitation. My waitresses were very kind and attentive when serving me. But I am sure you all want to know about the food. The times I have eaten here, I have had three meals: The Eggs Benny Flight, and Pancake Flight, and Shrimp n' Grits. I will detail each in the pictures of food (if I have them), but I will say that everything here was delicious. My one lone criticism is that some of these flights are best enjoyed with another, not by yourself. On a sidenote, the restroom is clean and stocked, but there is only one and it is unisex. As I said earlier, The Roots is the best breakfast and brunch restaurant, well for me, in Historic Downtown Melbourne. So it is understandable why I am giving them a five-out-of-five stars for their review. Food, service, and ambiance are all excellent and the issues are way too minimal for me to consider them having any major affect. If you are ever going to eat at The Roots only once. My suggestion are the flights. Either eggs bennies, pancakes, or mimosas, you can't go wrong with any of them.

It's a cute place and fun to go to. I got the pancake flight and loved I could pick different…read moreflavors
