I've eaten here more than 50 times over the years and have recommended this place to countless people, which is why this experience was so shocking. I was told I had to order from the menu right away, and when I hadn't placed my order within about 10 minutes, the owner told me she would call the police and have me trespassed. When I explained that I was planning to order a smoothie, she told me to "stop playing the victim" and demanded that I leave. I've never experienced anything like this at a business I've supported for so long. Being threatened with trespassing over taking a few extra minutes to decide what to order was completely unnecessary and extremely disappointing. This hidden gem has such a cute and cozy atmosphere. I only ordered a Gatorade and a lightly toasted buttered croissant. The croissant was not very warm, and the butter was not melted, so that part of the experience could have been better. Still, the staff was polite and kind, and the location has a calm, inviting vibe that feels perfect for reading, enjoying coffee, or having a simple breakfast. With the spacious seating, it's pretty easy to socially distance on your own. Parking is most viable in the sprawling side streets. Service is super quick + kind. CALIFORNIA ROLL: Ok, I honestly got this out of curiosity what their interpretation of "California" fare was-- and they're not wrong. Crisp greens + avo + deli meat + veggie wrap? This is...... Accurate. Sans chips/jalapeños, this is LA juice bar food (without the price!), and I'm not even mad. CHAI: Hype is real. I don't like cinnamon, and I liked this. The Sun Shoppe has expanded its menu so much over the years! While their hours have shortened because of the pandemic, it's still the perfect place to grab a quick bite or try a new kind of specialty drink into the evening. Their coffee is great, but my favorites are the chai and Thai teas! They have their own cute stickers now, and I'm always checking for new board games in the corner by the door for customers to use! The bathroom was also recently painted to make room for more doodles. I think the location is the absolute best between all the street parking, the proximity to everything downtown, and the wonderful staff! It's right next to a nice pottery painting spot, and they never mind it when I bring over my orders to sip on while I get artsy. If you're a Florida tech student, they used to (and probably still do) offer student discounts. But the prices are already very affordable! read more

For those who live in Melbourne, FL, there is one "it" coffee shop when it comes to the Historic Downtown Melbourne area, and that is The Sun Shoppe Cafe. Located west of the "core" of the area, it has become a to-go spot for many people, especially the younger crowd. To this day, it is still the place to go to relax, have a nice conversation with a cup of coffee. As mentioned above, The Sun Shoppe Cafe (which will be shorthand to Sun Shoppe for the rest of the review) is located just west of the main Historic Downtown Melbourne area, right next to The Escape Room (old building that used to be Vinyl Request Records). It is a decent-sized corner coffee shop that can seat about double the number of guests a typical Starbucks can hold. Upon entering, you'll notice the decor is set for a beach mood. It works despite being dated. You'll also notice they serve bakery goods, coffee, and pastries. I have eaten many of their bakery goods and would suggest the hummus and pita bread as well as their lox bagel. I also like the PB & bananas bagels too. As for coffee, coffee is coffee and you can't really screw it up unless you try. I personally like their cold drinks especially their iced chai drink and their smoothies. The only gripe I have with this place is at times, it can be really crowded. I know that's good for Sun Shoppe as a packed building means business is good, but I know nobody likes waiting around just for coffee and coffee shop baked goods. We absolutely love this place and have been coming here for years. Their prices are very reasonable and the service is always the best. They are a local cafe that serves breakfast type items; bagels, muffins, etc. Sandwiches, salads, coffees, smoothies, etc. My only negative is they only have almond milk as a non-dairy option. If I could have my way I would request oat milk, but that is not a big deal and I will continue to visit here regularly. read more

Okay, let's be honest.. is the Sun Shoppe actually "Good™" Or is it just lovable because of nostalgia? The answer is unknowable!! The coffee is certainly not the best in town, but if you're a Melbourne local, you've more than likely remember spent a few hours here doing home work or work-work, can remember back when they used to have open mike nights (not sorry those days are over!), know the smell (like a coffee/baked goods smell) that will be on your clothes when you leave, etc. The Sun Shoppe is the place we all come back to when we want to sit with an old friend. So yes, I think that makes it good. It's a family owned place, the family is so sweet and somehow so good at remembering their patrons! The staff is always so nice and helpful, I've asked advice on what to order on more than one occasion and they always help talk me into a slice of cake. One of my favorite things to get here is their Super Nova Lox on an Everything Bagel and Iced Chai. Even just thinking of it right now I'm like "Oh yeah, I'm definitely getting that for brunch this weekend.." In conclusion.. I guess this place is pretty good. P.S. I would like to commend them for getting new tables and chairs after having the same ones for over a decade!! The smoothie was still full and we gladly wanted to return it. I asked super nicely and honestly every other coffee shop would gladly just offer a new one to be customer friendly. But instead of doing any of that they turned around away from me and ny little daughter (including the manager) saying they don't want to talk to me. I literally was shocked and speechless because i didn't do anything lol and always stayed kind and quiet. At least the manager could have came and explain her reasoning to us, apologize for it etc. there are many options... In college the gang would come down and study , hang out for Mike night ,& enjoy our evenings. 20 years later I still come and visit and see that the sun shop is still there. The food is about the same the drinks are about the same, what bothers me is, being a coastal town that Melbourne is, why the sun shoppe, has yet to move towards earth friendly/recyclable goods. Styrofoam cups are not recyclable in almost any area of Brevard county. The fact that the sun shoppe is continuing to use unrecyclable and not earth friendly products is shameful, to say the least. read more

Now, it's been six years since I left Melbourne, and I make sure to stop here everytime I come into town. I particularly love their Chai Tea and I truly believe they have the best chai tea in all Florida. I do not know what it is about it, but it tastes like perfection. I have also tried several of their scones, but my absolute favorite is their apple and cinnamon one. Whichever scone you get, make sure to ask them to heat it up for you and to give you some butter, trust me you will love it! Sitting here right now makes me realize why this place is only good for 3 stars. The seating outside are made from cheap plastic that feels as bad as they look. The tables are no better as they are clearly worn and mildew ridden. On the inside the furniture is also outdated, like remnants from a days inn. Lighting is soft and music is varied and there's a warm coffee house vibe in the air! The food while not spectacular is average at best. The serving sizes are also average. You get what you pay for here. This is not one of those places where you can expect more for less. The coffee selection is wide and varied. They make excellent iced drinks and their deserts are to die for especially the Orange scone. Have one of these toasted with some butter and you'll be in heaven. Today I had their egg and cheese croissant. You can't spoil that one. But it still felt lacking...more eggs, and a better variety of cheese please! Overall, this place is a cool hangout.
