It was a good thing I stopped here because I was in the mood for an Arnold Palmer, and they made a cold, medium one for $3.50 (Photo 4). It must've hit the spot because I gained clarity in purpose, and there was a needed pep in my steps afterwards. Meanwhile I also noticed a pretty robust menu of breakfast plates, bagels, burritos, and sandwiches. Quite tempting, but I just didn't need the carbs that late in the afternoon. I may have just had the worst experience I've had as a Black man in a restaurant in nearly 30 years…read moreof living in SF at Pebbles Cafe. I knew something was off as soon as I approached the counter to give my sandwich order. The proprietor walked away from the counter as soon as I got there and muttered, "I'll be right with you." So I waited and when he came back I gave him my order, which he wrote down while I watched, and then took the orders of the two people behind me. I went outside to wait for my sandwich, and a few minutes later, the White guy who had ordered after me walked out with his sandwich. Hmm. I kept checking email, and then the White woman who had ordered after the guy behind me walked out with her sandwich. I went inside, thinking maybe I hadn't heard the call for my order, but no, the proprietor said, "they're wrapping up your sandwich now." So I finally got my sandwich and walked to the car to have a quick bite before heading home, only to find that it wasn't at all what I ordered, not even close, so I took it back. The proprietor didn't seem surprised at all and asked if I had time to wait for them to make it again. I did not. I was about to leave, but he said to let him give me my money back and he did, less the 20% tip I'd left. The thing is, I've been Black for well over 50 years, and I've been treated this way before--any one of those things I would have let slide as honest mistakes, but together it was clear that I was being told that my business wasn't wanted there. To be sure I'll never darken that cafe's doorstep ever again. And it's too bad, I live close by and could have become a regular if I hadn't been treated so poorly. Live and learn I guess.
