A group of friends and I stopped here recently while visiting and walking around Manchester-by-the-Sea. There were a lot of charming and beautiful items, but the customer service was abysmal. We went in 15 minutes before closing time, and immediately upon walking in, the woman behind the counter gave us a dirty look and reminded us, curtly and a little too loudly, of that fact. OK, fine -- we figured we would browse quickly and be on our merry way. We moved down to the lower level of the shop to browse. While we were browsing, another woman who worked there came in to the upper level and asked the first woman (still behind the register) if anyone else was there. The first woman said -- loudly enough for us, her potential paying customers, to hear -- that she had told us they were closing, but we wouldn't leave. Despite this woman doing her best to prevent a sale, one of my friends did end up buying a set of julep glasses for $100. You'd think that would alleviate some of this woman's pique. Yet as soon as the last of us had cleared the door of the shop, she audibly slammed and locked it behind us. I guess courtesy and grace cost more than $100 here. Spend your money elsewhere. read more

This place used to be great. Although like any consignment shop it has always been hit or miss, there were a lot of interesting and unique items for the home, priced very competitively. Clothing was always carried, but the percentage of clothing relative to everything else has increased dramatically. The prices are outrageously high. No bargains at all. Combined with unfriendly staff, it's really not worth it. read more

In response to Elaine P.: I am strongly suggesting you sold my screen (and whatever else) without notice to avoid paying me. This was no misunderstanding, it's how you make a profit. The fact that you've been making a profit this way for decades doesn't make it legal. It isn't up to me to decide the law, take it up with the office of the Attorney General when they contact you. read more

Cool pieces but the people who work there are not to friendly. When you walk in they don't greet you and always look at you like you're going to take something, this store used to be awesome, but now the environment makes me not want to go in anymore. read more

It is a nicely set up shop. However, It is Shockingly, seriously shockingly expensive. There are no bargains to be had but, if for example, you wanted an Erica Javits hat or purse, they had several. The 50% off price of a Javit's purse in a basket outside the shop was, with the discount, $75. Staff extraordinarily disinterested. read more

The woman that operates this store is a criminal. She took advantage of my elderly mother multiple times, saying the merchandise had been "thrown away because it didn't sell." The next time when my mother made sure they had a written agreement - the lady tried the same move and gave her nothing after the item of value clearly had been sold and was no longer on the shelf a week later. For some reason my mother brought her another item- an expensive Italian purse- she was assured she would get 50% of the $250 sale price. She walked away with $70 after a suspicious $10 "one time charge" that for some reason had never been mentioned up to this point after quite a few items had been sold. This woman should be in jail for treating our elderly citizens this way. read more

Love this place! I went there Friday afternoon (day off from work! woohoo!), and there are so many things to look at. They carry clothing, ceramicware, home decor, and other doo-dads. I will have to go back there as I only had 10 minutes to browse ... they were closing at 5PM. Even though I was pressed for time, I ended up buying a couple matching pillows to decorate the sofas in my living room. There was a Tocca dress there, but the bell was ringing for closing (there really wasn't a bell ... just saying figuratively hehe). I would say they carry nice goods, and I honestly think this is since manchester-by-the-sea is a pretty well off town with locals dropping off unwanted goods. The stuff in this store is beautiful . My grandmother has been coming here for years and took my mother and I shopping . The women who work here were so rude it kept me from purchasing anything . Hit up this eclectic collection of preppy antiques and faux-tiques to decorate your pad with a beachy chic aesthetic. It won't break the bank. There's always *new* merchandise coming through the door. Literally. There was a guy bringing in a cute sofa chair as we were shopping. Seems there's always decent selection of vintage linens and china. If you want to dress like a prep or add some preppy elements to your wardrobe--the gently worn clothing for men and woman will fit the bill. Tons of dresses from Donna Karan to Neiman's to Ann Taylor and shoes from Stuart Weitzman. I'm still dreaming of the perfectly fitting white, floral Lilly Pulitzer dress that was only $50. Then I woke up and realized I have too many summer dresses...sigh... read more

A friend introduced me to this place yrs ago. Use to find stuff time to time. Its under a different owner then when I first started visiting. Fun to poke around. Real hit or miss, like any store really. But prices not as good as they use to be and employees not very friendly. I love great c/s, and this place has some work to do in that dept. read more

I really like this store! I stop anytime we go through Manchester. The inventory changes constantly. They have clothing, home decor, dishes, furniture, etc. The prices are excellent (Hermes tie for $20, Brooks Brothers shirts for under $20). I was amazed at the quality of the clothing and furniture items. I recommend browsing through to see if you can find any hidden gems. Happy hunting! read more

Have to agree with zero to one star!!! Dropped off almost $3000 worth of stuff, most with tags still on, and received a check for $63.00??? Come on; whats going on here??? Better off donating myself to charities of my choice. Clothes on the floor for sale look 30 years old. Not sure what the story is. read more

I adore this place. Not only do I buy but I consign also. Inventory is extremely well priced and sells quickly, so I go as much as possible. It gets very busy on the weekends, which is a good sign for me. If something has been hanging around, you can ask what the best price is too...fabulous, love it!! Manchester by the Sea is a wealthy town, ergo beautiful things land there when clients are redecorating. read more

I was very excited to go to The Stock Exchange and had heard many wonderful things about the store...... I did find some things that I was considering purchasing but the staff was rude and condescending that I could not justify spending my money to support that behavior. Local consigners beware. This place will take your best things, refuse to give you a receipt for them, and sell them without paying you. When you inquire about your things, you'll be told that they didn't sell, and were "probably" sent to a charity. It's a scam. read more

As a resident of Manchester, the town where this establishment is located, I cannot recommend it to anyone under the 50 + age set. My mother always told me to avoid this place because their PRICES ARE INFLATED, but on a leisurely through town today on my way home from an errand I decided to give it a once over. I was BLATANTLY followed through the entire store by one of the old biddies who "works" there (she couldn't even figure out the cash register when another customer tried to make a purchase), because apparently in my Ralph Lauren button down shirt I look like a shop lifter? While I was obviously the ONLY person in there under the age of 40, I feel confident that I was one of the least likely people in the shop at that time to shop lift. The completely DEGRADING way that the saleslady looked at me convinced me not to make any of the purchases I was considering. Have I spent a couple hundred dollars at consignment shops in the past few months trying to outfit my apartment? Yes. Would it have been nice to be able to to patronize a small establishment in my own that I drive by every day? Yes. Will I ever return to this store? No. read more

I love this place ! There is a range of above average home furnishing merchandise & constantly being added to. The clothing is a different story - the larger part it is dated, dull & easy to understand why it got eliminated from someone's closet :( not to be harsh but it is the simple truth. The only real negative to this great shop is the owner (Polly) - she is one unhappy, unpleasant & frankly, snotty woman. It's unfortunate because I think she makes the other sales people there a little up-tight. read more

The furnishings are often nice (it seems they are first at the estate sales) but their clothing tends to be old-fashioned and a bit dowdy. Focused on designer labels only. If you are a consigner, they only want dealers. Don't waste your time. read more

As much as I love shopping here ( and I do every week!),when I attempted to consign some items, I was refused. I was told by the gal that went through my items that I needed to have at least 24 pieces accepted so I brought over 30. Only 13 items passed her inspection. She said that SE didn't accept labels such as Talbots or Ann Taylor or clothing from Marshall's or TJ Maxx (by that, I think she was referring to a pair of Willie Smith cropped pants) which struck me as odd. So I left with all my goods and was not too happy. I waited a couple of weeks and went back today as a shopper and wandered through, admiring all the furnishings etc, then headed to the clothing racks. In my brief search, I found at least 12 items that were from Talbots, Ann Taylor and even a great skirt from Willie Smith! Maybe it depends on who is doing the selecting, but I did feel slighted by the information she gave me as it appears no one else is aware of it. read more

This is a fun shop to go to -- and don't let the snooty attitudes of the employees bother you! All sorts of merchandise -- clothing (the majority for women, a small section for men, but no kid's clothes), housewares, jewelry, shoes, and furniture. Great selection of women's clothes -- brand-name labels, good quality items, reasonable prices, and up-to-date styles (I don't think they consign anything that's more than 2 years old). read more

I really like this store for the occasional designer item at a steal, and even better basics (think the perfect white button down, a luxury t.) Yes, the old ladies that run it are silly and snobby, but I don't let that prevent me from coming in often. Another thing that I like is the $1 rejects shelf--knick knacks that didn't sell; I have gotten a pewter urn, a silver cup with my actual initials on it, and the sweetest little French dipping bowls. The sign above the shelf is hilarious, and characteristic of the attitude here: "No bag, no wrapping." If you don't mind feeling scolded for purchasing these things, you can get a cheap thrill. :) I do recommend this place. read more

This is a find and I'm very picky about consignment shops! Went there yesterday, Sunday (August 10 -they open @ 1 Sundays.) The windows are seductively arranged in vignettes. Found the ladies there all helpful and cheerful. Was short on time as my 2 hr parking space was almost up & be advised Manchester is strict on giving out tickets (they don't chalk tires, they take license plates numbers). Ended up with a fabo French-style bench for under $100, and an English Hunt Scene serving tray; but could have browsed for another hour no problem. Need to go back to look at oriental carpets and their minor nicknacks, also higher end clothing, mirrors, original artwork, etc. etc. You won't be disappointed and there's a yummy cafe, Calas, next door, also a fantastic book store around the corner and Zaks gift shop across the street. read more

The Stock Exchange in Manchester, Ma is fabulous! Everyday new items arrive. Everyday new items are put on the sales floor! You can come in at 10AM and come back at 4PM and the inventory has changed. Consignors come from all over the North Shore to sell their items at this store. I have sold many, many items here and am thrilled to get a check in the mail! I have given a share of my profits back...the lovely rug in my daughter's bedroom, the painting of Tanglewood hanging in my living room, my beautiful crystal water glasses...just to name a few. This is not your typical consignment store. I recommend you stop by and check it out!! read more

Over rated, over priced with an attitude. Don't try to consign your gently worn items. Without even seeing the clothes they refuse you based on what you look like. They clearly have an A-list from whom they receive their wares. But it's sooo Manchester-By-The-Sea. The sales help should take service lessons from Hobbs in London. read more
