Bananas - Used, Vintage & Consignment Near Me - Gloucester, Massachusetts

This shop has something for everyone but it's especially good if you have a festive occasion to go to and you don't feel like spending hundreds of dollars. The men's section takes up about 1/4 of the store and children's section less but you can find great used jeans including Levi's and some designer brands in a big range of sizes. You can even find housewares here if you like vintage decor. I recommend this store to anyone coming from the city or out of state because it's the last vestige of the more wild and arty culture that used to thrive in Gloucester in the 70's thanks in part to the store owner himself. The place really should be a historical landmark because of how much it has improved the culture of Gloucester. The owner is known for these incredibly imaginative fashion shows that over the years have raised money for good causes like the restoration of city hall downtown. His store is like a public art piece that's totally authentic. If you are an appreciator of that then you will enjoy supporting this business. read more

i went in with my friend to get some jeans and shop around.I saw a gorgeous green lace vintage dress that i instantly fell in love with. i ask about it and the owner looked me up and down with pure disgust and said "is it for her she's smaller i don't think it would fit you" while looking at my friend. i'm 16 5'8 and 130 pounds. my friend ended up buying it and it was okay but that was gross to say to a 16 year old. oh and if any of you are wondering it fits like a glove and looks wonderful on me. read more

This store would be spectacular if it weren't for the main woman who works there. I have met the owner and he is friendly / knowledgeable, but this women stalks her customers around the store, huffing and puffing if you don't get out of her way, and glares at you in the eyes like she's putting a spell on you and expecting you to steal. Was visiting with my mother and she pretty much drove us out with her behaviour. Made me not want to purchase anything because of her terrible attitude. Not sure how people like this are capable of staying employed. Please Bananas, find a different full time employee! read more

This shit is B-A-N-A-N-A-S. Yes, Gwen was on to something. I'm pretty sure I just became bff's with this place, Paris Hilton style. Based on my previous reviews, it's pretty clear that I love 1) drag queens 2) reasonably priced vintage wear and 3) things that glitter in the night. I also have an inclination to flock towards things of a dramatic nature aside from theater: clothing, accessories, dangerously platformed shoes and all goodies along these lines. This place had those things and more. The vintage wearing drag queen in me was 100% satisfied with this place. But don't get me wrong, you don't have to love what I do to appreciate this place. I found the best 1940's inspired Steve Madden pumps in perfect condition, a red oversized bag (complete with polka dot lining), a really detailed, gold photo frame for my bedroom (Marilyn Monroe picture included) and a really unique silver ring all for $40. In my opinion, that's a total steal. I had to stop myself there. Next time, perhaps I'll just hand my wallet over the owner? The items ranged from the outrageous, down to the most simple of items. Plus I say I'd have to disagree with the small selection comment. In fact, I was overwhelmed when I went. It could have been glitter sensory overload, but that's just me. I felt there was a little of everything there. A great place to visit, nonetheless, on a lazy Saturday afternoon. If not for the items, go just for the entertainment value of it all. Such a fun vintage/consignment shop. A really wide and extensive collection of pretty much everything you could think of. Huuuge jewelry selection, tons of sizes, even cashmere. Everything was in great condition too. There are a ton of stores that call themselves "antique/vintage/whatever" and the clothing is torn, stained, stretched out, etc but everything I looked at here was lovely and reasonably priced. The place is very small and condensed but I could've spent all day admiring the selection. The employees were friendly and didn't hover over you which made browsing a more pleasant experience. Definitely will go back next time I venture up to Gloucester. I saw a lot of fun sequined items that would make great additions to any New Years or Halloween ensemble. read more

I have not been here In quite a while! I started shopping here when I was 19 or 20.Now am 58.LOVE this place! Richard who was the owner would open the store on Mondays(Usually closed) and my friends and I would clear out the store! It was like going to a party! Even was a model In one of his shows...Wore a banner over yellow taffeta gown,Miss Good Harbor! Walked out for my turn and pulled the stereo down! There went my modeling career!LOL. I had a houseful of clothing,hats,shoes gloves ,scarfs etc. My house urned down and lost everything! Am starting all over again. I HIGHLY recomend this store for an afternoon of adventure! I wouldn't say I really go bananas over bananas (har har har...). It's definitely been a last-minute stop for costume accessories for plays or Halloween, but it's a bit expensive depending on what you're looking for. There's a fairly small selection, but if you're a vintage junkie, there's plenty to sift through and it's all very neatly presented. Lots of costume jewelry and other fun things. I've been shopping vintage since college in the mid-80's, and have been a Bananas customer and fan for the past 10 years. I get compliments on the things I have bought there whenever I wear them. The owner, Richard Leonard, does a great job at keeping interesting and reasonably priced goodies in the store, especially the accessories--purses, hats, gloves and jewelry pieces that I love! Everything is clean and well organized, and usually the store is filled with fun like minded people as well. It is well worth a visit, and should be on every vintage or funky clothing junkie's regular route. read more

After all the over-priced vintage in Boston, Bananas is amazing. I can actually afford to buy glittery things. It's a dream come true. Sequin shirts, costume jewelry, minks hanging from the walls. There's plenty of things a little bit run down, but you can't really complain about moth holes when something is 60 years old. There is some modern clothing, but who cares about that when you have so much wonderful glam goodness going on! read more
