After over a decade living in OK, I finally visited this Stillwater destination restaurant. It…read morelived up to its reputation as a special place. I came to Stillwater on a work trip with 5 other people. It was a Tuesday just before noon. We were quoted an accurate 10 - 15 minute wait time. That gave us time to browse the gift shop before we sat down at our table on the second floor. We had a nice view of the campus and the bar across the street. It was a bit loud in there due to the music and many other guests, but we carried on our lunch table conversation without any trouble. I ordered Joe's Classic with lettuce, tomato, and pickles. It was a solid charbroiled burger -- a step up from Burger King because of the thickness of the patty and because it had a buttered toasted bun. A little ketchup and mustard was all that it needed. For my side order, I got the coleslaw. Overall, not bad. It was served cold and had little bits of carrot and red cabbage for color and extra crunch. The dressing was not overly sweet and had a runny consistency that I liked. However, I prefer a coleslaw dressing with more vinegar than in their recipe. We ordered some of the famous cheese fries to share as a table. They were delicious! I like that they cut their fries in-house, and their custom fry seasoning was delicious. No extra salt or pepper needed!

The day was warm so the AC was up inside. We were seated however, on a second floor, open porch. Thank goodness for the large, iced, cold glasses of water! I ordered Chicken chili and a Black Bean Burger with everything on it (pickle, tomato and lettuce). The rest of the party received their appetizers, and main dishes. I waited, and waited while the server attended to guests being seated at other tables. When my sandwich arrived it was cold and dry. Way disappointing. The chili though, was hot and delicious, especially with the shredded cheddar I received on the side. I guess it was a busy time of day, or that our server was a bit overwhelmed and unorganized, but I won't be returning any time soon for a cold, dry burger.

The menu also deserves credit because there was a huge variety of options, enough that just about anyone could find something they'd enjoy, and the prices were very reasonable for the portion sizes and atmosphere. Speaking of atmosphere, the interior was stunning. Bright, colorful, and beautifully designed in a way that almost felt like dining inside a Mexican cathedral. It had warmth and personality without feeling tacky or overdone. You can tell a lot of care went into creating the space. Which makes the actual food situation even more disappointing. The food itself was not bad in terms of quality or preparation. Underneath everything, there were good flavors there. The problem was the salt. Nearly everything we ordered was so aggressively oversalted that it became difficult to enjoy after a few bites. I'm not usually sensitive to sodium, but it actually caused a mild dermatological reaction for me afterward, and my girlfriend could not even finish half of her meal because it was simply too much. It is honestly a shame because almost every other part of the experience was great. If the kitchen could rein in the salt levels, this place would be a great spot for after a movie. Unfortunately, as it stands now, we will not be returning.

When you first walk in the atmosphere has the "it" vibe. Welcoming but not overwhelming. The lighting is wonderful as it's good enough to sit and read a book but also have an intimate conversation. The best part of the atmosphere is they have various nooks and areas that seat a range of people. The seats vary widely so you are bound to find one that your butt enjoys resting on. And the artwork, nick-knacks, various "Easter eggs" are through the cozy place. They have a few light munches...I recommend the mixed olives. They go wonderfully with a glass of wine. And wine is their specialty. Large variable list at reasonable prices served in the right type of glass for that wine. It was sit yourself and we were greeted by Emerald the manager. She was so very knowledgeable on the wine that she was able to help me remember my favorite wine (it's one of those reds that is hard to pronounce...but she knew it from my description of the taste!!)! My sister from Austin was absolutely taken back that OKC had such a unique, fun vibe relaxing place. She walked around the place and was just impressed with everything on the walls. The restrooms are out in the hallway and used by some other offices/theater, so you have to have a code. Their reasoning for the code makes sense but if you suck at punching numbers (I am looking at my partner) then it becomes a challenge. But they were very nice and clean. My sister and I had a wonderful time catching up and sipping on great wine. We had such a wonderful time that 2 days later we came back and brought my wife...and Emerald remembered us. Some places just get it...and this is my kinda of place. Anyone else up for Studying?!?
