2/23/24: The Stanhope House dates back to 1798! It's like the all time Great American Road House. A group of us came put to support our friend's friend BD Lentz- blues guitarist. What an amazing show BD and his other accompanying musicians put on! The venue had phenomenal acoustics. Many of us were on the dance floor getting down. Many of the GREATS like Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Johnny Winter... have performed here. A basic bar menu is available. We had Beer, Pinot Noir, Cesar Salad, Sweet Potato Fries and Coconut Shrimp. All the food was pretty decent. The entire staff is very friendly. Parking is available in back of the building. "Presently , there's been a lot of talk about tearing this great historic place down. I have been attending shows at the Stanhope House for several years and I can't believe I haven't done a review yet! The outdoor Beer Garden is a cute, comfortable way to see a show - and it is newly expanded for the summer of 21! The food is simple bar food, but done to perfection! The onion rings are the best we've ever had! The sandwiches can all be served as wraps - which I highly recommend, and the quesadillas are outstanding! Stop in for whatever music makes you happy, and make sure to try some of the great grub! read more

I attended a show here (Rusted Root) many years ago and remember it being a good time. It was packed. We've since moved close by and I finally see a decent lineup of artists. I've always wanted to go back here more for the roadhouse vibe and history. We were able to see the Side Cars tribute band and it was great! They put on an amazing show and service at the bar was perfect. They have a small menu that you could expect from a music venue. Keep your expectations low (it's divey- in a good way) and expect good music. I hope they keep the music going at this place. We used to go to Mexicali in Teaneck all the time but the ownership changed and so did the music. Hopefully Stanhope keeps the good music coming. read more

STANHOPE: Brie loves exploring and decided it was time to check out Northwestern NJ! The Stanhope House is a music venue that has "waggin weekends" doggie happy hour every Saturday from 12-4PM. You enter through the main building to get a wristband ($5 per person which gets you a ticket for a drink) and make your way to the cute, fenced-in outdoor backyard lined with trees and plenty of umbrella covered picnic tables to enjoy a drink and watch the puppies play around! They recommend dogs 20 pounds and larger (since they usually attract a bigger dog crowd), so if you're concerned about your small dog, feel free to contact them. Brie, being only 9 pounds, was fine. Fantastic venue for a show. I saw Immortal Technique play here over the weekend and really enjoyed the venue. It's basically a big bar in the middle of nowhere in NJ with a stage and a beer garden in the back. I didn't drink any booze, but my friends enjoyed their beer offerings. I just had some bottled water. As a venue for a show, I thought it was comfortable. The staff all seemed really nice and although there was a "cover" / ticket for the show, the performer has a great following, so it makes a whole lot of sense. They have a parking lot and although that was full during the show, parking on the streets in town was not an issue. I would definitely recommend The Stanhope House for a show! read more

I came here to see two of my friend's bands. WISER TIME, and WOODFORD BROTHERS BAND. When I walked in I was instantly transformed back to another era. The walls are all adorned with pictures of some of the great musicians who have played here. The list reads like STEVIE RAY VAUGHN, MUDDY WATERS,WILLIE DIXON, PAUL BUTTERFIELD, CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE, Dr. JOHN, "LUTHUR GUITAR JR" JOHNSON, BILLY BRANCH, SON SEALS, LONNIE MACK,HUBERT SUMLIN, THE FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS, JOHNNY LEE HOOKER, JOHNNY COPELAND, RITCHIE HAVENS, ALBERT COLLINS, ALBERT KING , BILLY BRANCH,RITCHIE RAMONE, and the list goes on and on. There is wood all around and in the main room is leopard covered couches, a back bar with tables and chairs. Outside there is a patio area with table and chairs, a bar with flatscreen and an outdoor fountain.. This is a unique place to grab a bite to eat, sit back and enjoy some live music or hear a DJ. It's a very comfortable feeling.... For me this is a true Roadhouse, not like some other places which call themselves a Roadhouse only to be a dive bar. The STANHOPE HOUSE has one of the best "sound boards" around.( a mixing console, used to combine electronic audio signals.) It's around 5 ft long and the music sounds so crisp and clear.. Good venue if crowd is under 100 people. Enough parking if crowd is under 100 people. 4 stars under those conditions. The problem is that the stage is small being only 1 foot higher than ground level. The ceiling is only 10 feet high at most. If there's a big crowd you won't be able to see in front of you (if there's over 100 people) because there stage is only 1 foot above the ground. 2 stars under these conditions. They have a full restaurant menu better than most music venues. They have about a dozen different beers on tap at prices that are normal for NW NJ. read more

I went to see uncle Floyd. The show was great. The food and drinks were terrible. I had the wings, they were decent. The burger and the fries were tastless and spent too much time under the heat lamps. I had a cola, not sure what it was, but it was not good, so i ordered a Malibu Bay Breeze. I wish I had not. I came here today for an advertised "doggy happy hour", which I called to confirm last week. We were a party of four, one of whom drove over an hour to join us. The place was locked up tight during the advertised time of the event. I called the restaurant, got the voicemail. I called the on call number, and spoke to the manager, who gave me someone else's number. I called that person, left a message, and received no response. I couldn't believe I had to look in my weiner dog's eyes and tell him we were going home with empty paws. read more

Great dive bar with some great music. Drinks are overpriced and their food and service is friendly but so slow it is awful. They say on their website they do gluten free but when asked they can just do sandwiches without buns and can't even say anything about keeping it separated. I'd say go for the music and be prepared to overpay but there aren't many dive bars with live music so maybe worth it after dinner elsewhere. read more

Great place to hear music and to get out of Bergen County (for a change). The service was attentive, especially in a place where it's loud and people tend to move around a lot. The food was pretty good for pub grub. My friend got one of the many chicken sandwiches (I don't remember which one) and I got the black bean hummus wrap. We got sweet potato fries as a side for both sandwiches, and there were plenty so I felt like I didn't miss out on dessert. Is this a four-star restaurant? No. It's not supposed to be. It's a casual place where local talent can play some good music before the headliner shows up. It's great the community supports their local talent. read more

The Stanhope house is so much history. Some of the top blues players have preformed here. I love the Tuesday night blues open mic jam. They bring talent from all over the state and New York City. Best of all there's no cover charge. I have not had their food they are in a long time so I cannot give a testimonial on it. Only been here once, but I wanted to say that it sucks to see really good bands on stage struggling with the sound. Multiple, and *long* breaks by each band to dick around with equipment. I don't care for looking forward to seeing one of my favorite bands for a month, only to watch them get screwed over and leave feeling bad for them. First and last time here this place is horrible the bartender behind the bar has a fitting shirt the grinch cause she's nasty she let one of my friends order food and me and my other friend went up to order right after that she gave us a problem and an attitude refused us we also stood at the bar waiting for the bartenders attention for way to long she told us to wait for the waitress she would get her for us we waited to long for her Also the waitress cut me off while I was in the middle of ordering I had to say um excuse me I'm not done to continue my order we had tabs open and they had our card and the bartender still wouldn't take our orders which made it harder for our waitress The bathrooms were dirty the mirror had a layer of filth on it I couldn't even see into it the food was also way to over priced only because they charge for everything even a slice of cheese it was also freezing inside my friends and I were ice cold the whole time it took them 15 minutes to bring out an order of wings 45 minutes for an order of chicken fingers and fries and it took an hour and change for a burger all of my friends were done and just sitting there for a while and I just got my food I went to the host to tell her the problem and ask for a manager she told me there was no manager on duty and she would give me an email and maybe we can work something out even though I told her I don't want the food or to pay after I went to the server and told her I wasn't paying for the food or eating it then she told me that she would take the food back came back after and told me that they called the manager n they said to wipe my bill clean ... How I was even expected to pay after returning the food was beyond me I thought once you return an order you aren't expected to pay obviously Even though "they called the manager" it doesn't make a difference this was the worst experience and I would have liked to personally speak to the manager to tell him about the horrific experience here which started with his horrible employees and their bad attitude read more

This place proports to be the oldest blues club in NJ. The building dates back to 1790, before "blues" had even been invented, so it's possible. They've had many big names play here over the years. It is currently under new management. I saw the legenadary John Hammond, Jr. perform here tonight. There were only about fifty patrons in the place, but, aside from the fact that the show started almost an hour late, and then we were forced to sit through an insufferable opening act, John still did a great set. While the sound system is good, there is an adjacent lounge which had another group performing simultaneously, which was distracting, as were the overhead TV's in the bar, which were left on during the performance, until the artist demanded that they be turned off. They have a large selection of beers. However, the food is dreadful. I started with the guacamole and chips. The guac was turning brown, and the chips were like dog chews. Their famous brisket looked like boiled, grey shoe leather. It was not properly sliced against the grain, and was chewy. The server did not give me any sauce with it, just dry meat slapped on a plate. I asked for a salt shaker, and some BBQ sauce on the side, which helped. The guy at the next table got the same dish, and was given maple syrup instead of the au jus sauce that he was expecting. WTF? The french fries were freezer burned and inedible, although the onion rings were pretty good. Come here for the bar and the music, but avoid the food. read more

Eerily cool place to check out some smaller bands.... It is totally haunted. I loved the history to this place.. one of the oldest bars in NJ? Dude. Service is friendly enough, drinks are very inexpensive, food is decently good to awesome (wings are omfg woah)... Sitting at the bar - order at the bar, but expect to order your food through a waitress (I found this a little off-putting, like the bartenders are clearly capable to take food orders, and although it might be a little bit of a pain in the butt, sitting at a wobbly table isn't always the most enjoyable...) Either way, our waitress was a doll. She kicked and punched her way through the crowd (it gets packed apparently!) just to bring us our drinks/food.. and check back on us every half hour or so. This is a small place to see a show - if you have ever been to the Jazz Cafe in Wilkes Barre, it is quite similar, possibly even a bit smaller. But similar artists make their rounds here at the Stanhope House as the Jazz Cafe... so you might only have to go half the distance to see some pretty cool indie & jazz acts. It is a little out of the way, about a 45-50 minute drive from my apartment, and I 80 west can be a nightmare during rush hour, so definitely plan accordingly if you are traveling a significant distance. read more

Those giving 4-5 stars for this place either are hungry for a blues club or simply don't know what a good blues night out experience really is. A dive bar with music, warm and overpriced beer. Going to the Stanhope inn you know what you are going to get...but it never gets better. We spent an evening with a group of friends (12 of us) and the evening was fun and interesting. First off a $20 charge to get in is too high. If you are paying bands that's one thing, but if you cannot ask regular customers to fork out a cover charge that is respectable for a NYC bar. All of the beers we drank were very warm and ordering a Guinness meant that the barman had to go into the back room to open the can, pour it and bring it back to you (who does that!?). Food menu is typical pub grub but expect a long wait when bands are in and they won't have the better dishes available. Waited an hour for chicken wings and some fries. $5 for a cup (not a pint) of beer. Laughable. The Stanhope inn is for sale and I am not surprised. The police hang out very close to the car park, monitor the cats leaving and many customers have been pulled over not being drunk. A huge turnoff. read more

I was very excited to check out the Stanhope House. I went on a rainy Saturday night and made a reservation 2 hours before I showed up. Our table was incredible front and center for the band. We started with 2 Stoli cocktails which were only $6/ea. sweet and wings. The wings were pretty good, they are cooked dry with sauce on the side. They did not come with the bbq sauce listed on the menu and the blue cheese was watery, but we asked for bbq sauce, got it and it was delicious. Next I had the brisket with hush puppies and my boyfriend had the pulled pork. He said his sandwich was pretty good and it was moist with bbq sauce. My brisket was dry and leathery with visible fat in the leather. Again I asked for bbq sauce, trimmed the fat off and it was much better, but not by any means like my mom's brisket I was expecting and I would not order it again. The hush puppies were supposed to come with a buttery dipping sauce we asked the waitress and she said they did not have any so she came back with maple syrup it was ok. French fries would have been better. The cole slaw was pretty good. Also we noticed that our candle on the table moved a few times throughout the night,. I have never been a believer in ghosts, but the table was not shaky and my boyfriend and I both noticed it move. We asked the waitress and she said there is a long history of ghosts there. She said when they were renovating lots of things fell unexpectedly, chairs moved in the basement while everyone was upstairs etc. So be aware this place is haunted. I think that kind of adds to the historic charm. All in all a great night. The band rocked, drinks were cheap and the waitress was nice as can be so I would definitely come back for drinks and dancing, but might eat at home beforehand. read more

Amazing blues landmark! Parts of this building are from the Revolutionary era, or so I've heard, so don't let the leopard velvet upholstery fool you. Great beers on tap, and a bunch more in bottles. Good soul food menu; the brisket sandwich was off the chain! Most importantly, this is one of the most famous blues venues in NJ history -- many of the greats have stopped through over the years. First and last time at Stanhope house. THINK TWICE BEFORE GOING THERE! They do not welcome people from out of town. Moments after walking in the door, security harassed people for the entertainment. All employees made it clear they didn't want to be running the establishment. These factors created a horrible atmosphere. Many people left early. If you are planning on booking your band here, beware. They say they are not a pay to play club but after my band played there, I realized this club is definitely a pay to play club. My band personally sold nearly $600 in tickets and we had a few stragglers pay full price at door. We drove 1.5 hours after working all day and barely made it for our early set time. They paid us $120 and 6 drink tickets. Not even a meal ticket. The bartender was overcharging customers as well, taking money and not returning with change. He was also selling old flat beer and not telling you unless you asked what was wrong. We covered a majority of the door and the headliner maybe had 15-20 people. Other than the booking guy inviting us back to play another show and rob us at $3 a head on a $15/$20 ticket, We never got a thank you from the staff or the headlining band. This place does not appreciate the hard work some bands have to do to put on a good show. We play places that charge less at the door and we make two or three times more. Definitely not worth the trip for my band. Disappointed. read more

This historic place is the best to see shows! Talk about up close and personal, u could even meet the band because the venue is so intimate. Saw 4 bands, all 4 were treated with respect. Also, my 2 kids came, which almost never happens. They saw their first show ever! The owner took personal care of my kids so they stayed safe in crowds, even wouldn't let someone use the bathroom when my son was in it. I love the owner and the venue equally. read more

So many wishy-washy reviews of this place, and I can understand why. One bad experience can ruin it for you indeed! Thankfully, I haven't had a bad experience but can tell you every time I do come here, I always have a decent time. When I do come, it's mainly for the bands, and I try to support the coverbands mostly. While I may be able to see bands for free in my area, sometimes I find really good bands that are worth the money (and sometimes some bad ones who get the lyrics wrong lol) If you do expect to eat here on a night of ANY show, do yourself a favor and call a day or two ahead of time and make sure to put a reservation in. It guarantees a table/spot with service. The one thing that does disappoint me though is the food. Just simple bar food and that's it. Gone are the times when they would have specials and such, or have a broader menu to choose from. The good news? Some of the bar food is given in portions which are quite large - such as the chicken finger platter. I think they actually give you the entire chicken! read more

Not only is it super close to my house but it's a crazy cool place! The food is basically your typically bar food, with some exceptions here and there but it definitely doesn't taste like bar food! It's honestly really, really good! Typical "American" food but not grungy or stale like some bars I've gone too. I mainly love going with friends and just seeing whose playing.. There's always a ton of rad local bands and even some big timers every once in awhile.. It's a great place to meet up with friends, drink some beer and just have fun. Just go one night and surprise yourself at what entertainment might be there. You definitely won't regret it! read more

They play the music real loud so make sure you wear earplugs or buy a set at the door! VIP tickets make a difference as to get you a seat in front of the stage (although that's also in front of the speakers) I am in a power wheelchair which makes things a little more complicated in my life but the staff here went above and beyond to help me in and out through The extra door directly to my seat which had a great view of the stage and was out of the way while giving me plenty of room. Good beer selection and a respectable bar menu. Don't get here often enough but when there's a band I want to see there are a few places better! read more

This is a NJ classic. It's got a great deep South roadhouse vibe to it and the food is alright. Biggest drawback is the acoustics are HORRIBLE. If you're a band who relies on their sound, you got to put that into consideration. You'll have to up the theatrics to compensate for the fact that you sound like an omelette of noise.
