Since my summer break has basically left me open to go out on a weeknight, off we went. And what a show he and his band gave! The acoustics are great. What I loved was how close everything feels. The drums hit, the bass fills the room, then there's the piano, guitar, etc. And seeing someone we actually love up on this stage playing, was even better. Some housekeeping: there's a two drink minimum PER person: drinks are $20 a pop. Do the math. But I'll say this: my two drinks were POWERFUL. Hubs' two were powerful too. Food isn't required, but we wanted some bites. We ordered the crab cake which by itself, was delicious. You could actually taste the crab. But- as someone who doesn't eat tartar sauce, mayo, mustard or any other sauces like that, that creamy tartar/remoulade-type situation, I didn't like. It's not you. It's me. The room is small so all seats get good views and sound. My chicken pesto sandwich arrived quickly and was delicious. The fries were thin, hot, and crisp! I washed the meal down with a French 75. Excellent! I remember when Cafe Wha was THE party. Sadly, that isn't true anymore. I'm happy to say that the party is alive and well, and living at the Black Soul Experience at The Groove, led by entertainer extraordinaire Antwon Robinson. He and the band will make you dance 'till you sweat and sing 'till you're hoarse! This show is a great time hearing live music by talented, energetic musicians. They played pop, R&B, soul, rap, go-go, and reggae! Something more special than good music happened. Antwon shouted out Trinity's birthday and congratulated her onstage along with several other birthdays. He asked where people were visiting from. At first I was bored by all of the shoutouts, but over the course of the evening Antwon built community among strangers. As we left we wished each other Happy Birthday and safe travels back to our hometowns. The beauty of community is much needed in these times and I credit Antwon with creating a wave of kindness and human recognition. Go see this show! I highly recommend!

The consensus was easily the Village Vanguard, so we went ahead and made a reservation for our first night. We arrived almost an hour before showtime and the place was already quite busy. We nevertheless were shown to a table very close to the stage, so yeah, it's definitely a good idea to get there early. By the time the show started, the place was packed. I'd read that they really cram you in there like sardines and that's certainly not an exaggeration. But for me, that was part of the charm. We were there to see Miguel Zenon and his band, and right from the first notes, I knew we were watching something really special. They were absolutely mindblowing and the stellar acoustics of the room enhanced the experience considerably. Yep, the Village Vanguard is as amazing and unmissable as I'd hoped. Just the history of that room alone is worth the cost. We'll definitely be back.

This place has that legendary, old school jazz club feel, cozy, intimate, slightly cramped in the best possible way, and filled with people who were genuinely excited to be there. Each ticket comes with a minimum one drink purchase, and once the music started, the pole became a little less important. The saxophone, piano, and drums were all fantastic, and the musicians completely pulled us into the show. We'll definitely be back.
