I didn't expect to write this cause all the great reviews I had high expectations going into the place for the tour I really needed to move this was important! ... Monday had a appointment went in the price was 3079$ one bedroom , and my issue is that the day I went in to apply By the afternoon the next day they were closed due to their company party so nobody was at the office to let me know if I was approved or not and I have to be out of my home by the end of the month so frustrating. I waited Tuesday Wednesday and then Thursday! I call Thursday was waiting for call no one got to me around 11 ...I call myself ! She's like I still haven't even looked at your application we have so many I'll let you know by 6pm today she didn't even know what I was talking about.... I already shared my bank information with them. I paid my deposit 535$ but pretty much I felt like after I was a burden checking the status They didn't let me know that they were gonna be closed it may take longer than usual common courtesy you think... . after I shared all of my personal stuff paid the 535$ didn't let me know anything thought it was really rude!i really needed to find a place. I'm going with a company that's more attentive because they genuinely didn't care .I had to keep bugging them and ask them questions. before submitting my application I wish I knew I would not submitted my application and I would've went somewhere else if I knew it would take me three days to get a answer .that's why I canceled my application for the apartment. one bedroom apartment three grand I would expect a more inviting space, i get my refund of 500$ around 21 days not getting the 35$ back was such a waste of time but at least I never have to deal with this place again! The service and care from the Standard Staff are incredible! Anytime I need work orders completed, Joe is the first to respond within the same day and is quick to take care of the issues. He's extremely responsive and very reliable! The office staff are very courteous and communicate efficiently on matters that important and even time sensitive. Olga, Ana, and Aurora are really kind and make sure everything is taken care of as well. Overall, the standard has taken really good care of the property as well. They recently changed the garage gates which are more secured and easier to enter/leave from. The mailboxes have been updated so every package is secured using your mailroom code and includes plenty of boxes so no ones packages can ever be stolen or lost. I would highly recommend considering your stay at The Standard. They'll always take good care of you! read more

When we first moved in at the beginning, things were great with the old management. I don't know what happened but the quality of everything just became worse. First it was the problem with the alarms going off over small issues that woke us up then there was the key fob situation that is still reoccurring. There was also issues with the hot tub not working sometimes. Lastly, this is the problem that I have feared - Pests! In the beginning I had no issues with bugs but then I started getting these bugs that look like roaches coming out from the walls. I also saw some mosquitos, moths, and I keep getting itchy bites - I honestly might even have bed bugs here. I am going to contact them to see if I can get some help with the pests or see if they can help seal the bottom of my walls because I really am deathly afraid of bugs and I don't want to go near it. Also, this place doesn't feel safe. They should provide security's phone number because someone tried to open my door in the middle of the night today. I live alone and that's pretty scary. read more

It's 12:20AM and I'm sitting outside on the curb holding my dog as the fire alarms in the entire building are going off. Once a month, this is the routine. So if you want to pay "luxury" rent and live in an apartment that wakes you up in middle of the night, management that changes once every few months, and greystar who is considered the evil empire of all landlords, then come live here. Management always has some excuse for everything and they never own up to the fact that greystar is cheap and simply doesn't give a damn about tenants lives. They're a multi billion dollar corporate. The difference between living here and under a bridge is you get charged for rent here. read more

The Standard is a luxury apartment complex in a not so luxury area. Not quite in "Willow Glen" as advertised, this complex (along with the nearby ones) serve as a perfect target for theft which is a MASSIVE problem here. I don't know the specifics but it feels as though there are multiple people with key fob entry who come in at night and free reign on what they want to take. Other reviewers have already went over their experiences, the mailbox and the bike thing but I'd like to add mine 1. BIKE ROOM - NOV 2020 Just to reiterate with the bike room incident: it's inside the building and someone walked away with literally 10-15+ bikes. Like, they almost cleaned out the room. This was the only time I've seen management take immediate action 2. STORAGE UNIT - NOV/DEC 2020 I rent a storage room from the complex, it's an unmarked door at the end of my hallway. I used to have two bikes in there until one day I went into it and saw they were gone. Upon closer inspection, I saw crowbar marks showing forced entry (uploaded pic). Told office, they did nothing. ONE WEEK later I check on my room again, and my stuff was rifled through a SECOND time. Out of curiosity, I walked around and looked at all the other storage rooms in our complex, and to my surprise 8 of the 10 I saw had crowbar marks near the handle So I call the leasing office like hey, can we do something about this? I also informed them what I found, and I suggested they send out an email so everyone else can go check on their stuff. Well after following up like 3 more times, they finally did something. They installed a plate on the door so it can't be propped open. On ONLY MY DOOR. And they never sent an email. (So if you're a current resident and have a storage room, go check on your things) 3. MOTORCYCLES - FEB 2021 In October, my girlfriend and I got our first motorcycles. Within the first few days, I found a note on mine from another resident warning me that *one week prior* their motorcycle got stolen from the garage along with one other one. I thought wow that's unfortunate, and I'll get a disc brake lock to keep mine safe Well 3 months later, both of our motorcycles get stolen too! Leasing office just gives their "sorry" and that's pretty much it. Four cameras pointing at every entrance to the garage and they can't find footage of two motorcycles getting stolen ----- I've only lived here for 6 months and I've witnessed too much. Almost everyone I've spoken to in the hallways has had their car broken into or something stolen. It sucks to get anyone to do something about it, you gotta neg them. I shouldn't have to call and beg them to do something to protect my property here. Not once were they like "wow, let me see what I can do to try to prevent this from happening again." Just don't. After one year I can confidently say this has to be, hands-down, the WORST apartment complex in San Jose. The site-management, whomever that may include at this point (turnover is record setting), have allowed this place to continue to decline. The consequences suffered by those who inhabit the building at the hands of mismanagement are serious. Mail: Your packages will be stolen. Count on it. We have lost over $1,000 worth of property from the mail room due to the managements hands-off approach to package security. You simply cannot have valuable packages delivered should you chose to live here. Fire Alarms: Every apartment complex gets false alarms from residents, but at The Standard you can count on that extra alarm at 1am each month due to lack of regular preventative maintenance. I wouldn't be surprised if the site management had no idea what needs maintaining and have adopted a purely reactionary strategy at this point. Security: There is no security. Parking: The garage is dark and easy to access for criminals. Smashed windows are common and people have experienced grand-theft a few times in the past year. "Garbage Concierge": For a mandatory fee of $25 a month, in addition to the normal trash fee, everyone will put their filthy, stinky, unsightly trash in the hallway to rot. At some point someone will come and get it. Refund people $25/mo, professionally clean the carpets, and enforce residents taking literally a few seconds a week to walk a bag to the trash-room like every other functioning apartment complex. I was going to hesitate posting this because posting a critical and negative review of an apartment complex you're currently living in isn't advisable... BUT this has to be the worst apartment complex I've ever lived in and I've lived in a half dozen. I shared all of these concerns with management months ago, and anything that was improved was just replaced with a new problem or a smaller issue becoming worse. For starters, the crime. Stolen motorcycles from inside the garage. Stolen packages from the mailing room. Drug deals going down in the neighboring parking lot. If you move in here, you'd better have insurance on your personal possessions. Secondly, the fire alarms. The last time I lived anywhere there were so many fire alarms was my college dorm. They happen in the middle of the night, the early morning, middle of the day, you name it. You like to sleep? This apartment ain't for you. You like to smoke in the middle of the night, wake up the whole apartment, and not have to pay any consequences for your actions? Come on in. You don't have a clue how to cook anything without burning something and lack the wherewithal open a window? You're in luck! Join your own fellow peoples. The final kicker is even though there are non stop fire alarms they still need to conduct a 2-day long fire alarm inspection across the entire building. You read that right: 2 days of fire alarms blaring. In a 9 month period there have been 15 fire alarms not counting the 2 days of tests. Third, the constant state of maintenance. Elevators going out of commission, key fob scanners breaking randomly, lights breaking, you name it. One time I tried to get some maintenance done on my fridge and was told I'd have to pay $50 for it. That's called a shakedown kids. This place is so not worth it. At half the price it would be worth the constant headaches but considering the plethora of similar options in San Jose and neighboring areas, you're better off looking elsewhere. read more

You can read all the recent 1 star reviews, they're all true. We lived at The Standard for almost 3 years and while the experience was not bad while it was an Alliance residence, things went downhill really fast once it got acquired by Greystar and the manager Amy left. First of all this is not a luxury apartment - it has a tiny pool and a gym, and that's it. It's a cheaply built wooden stick complex (see https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2019-02-13/why-america-s-new-apartment-buildings-all-look-the-same for reference) which offers very little sound proofing (expect to be bothered by your neighbor above all the time), uses the cheapest materials possible and is poorly finished (think 1 inch gap below the patio door). Thermal insulation is incredibly poor, so you will spend a lot of money on heating or air conditioning - we moved to a 3 levels town house and our bill went from $200 down to $80 (we lived in a 2 bedroom apartment at the Standard). Fire alarms. They go off all the time (false positives of course) - so much that we stopped evacuating. Every year, the management will sound the alarm for hours for "testing" purpose. If you have a baby or even a pet, that alone is a good reason not to live there. My daughter now has an irrational fear of alarms thanks to this place. Now on to the worst part. After Greystar took over, they reduced the cleaning routines and the complex started getting dirty. The new management team was completely incompetent/lazy and impossible to reach by email or phone. The maintenance team (George and Brenda) was however still around and they were great. And since they were probably too vocal about the incompetence of their new manager, they got fired. That was incredible... After we told the building manager that we would not renew our contract, she removed us from the building mailing list so that we did not receive important information e.g. when the parking gate stopped working - we confronted her and she lied to our faces, pretending we were still receiving emails. After checking with our neighbors, it appears we were not the only ones who stopped receiving emails after giving notice. This manager is now gone, probably fired after the slew of negative reviews. However, the new team is as incompetent if not worse. They completely ignored our multiple requests to get our deposit back (mind you, it was already way past the 21 days mark since we had moved out) and we had to send them a registered mail threatening to go to small claims court. There's currently a class action against Greystar that covers this kind of practice as well as deducting unlawful amounts from their tenants' deposits. Let's go ahead and give this the July 2021 update. Fire alarms went off not once, not twice, but THREE times last night. Have early morning meetings? Oh well, go ahead and re-schedule them since you'll need to catch up on sleep after a 4:30, 6:30, and 7:30 AM fire alarm. My dog is beside himself and I have bags under my eyes from how often I'm woken up in the middle of the night. My partner's car got keyed in the parking lot on all four sides, and Greystar doesn't do a thing about it. It's in the shop as we speak. It's something we have to deal with if you have a guest who needs to park outside of the garage. I'm absolutely miserable living here and you will be too if you decide to live here. My lease ends in August and I am ecstatic to never in my life live in a Greystar community again. Get out while you can -- or don't move in in the first place. read more

Thieves are breaking into the apartment complex and stealing bikes and packages. Our mail room was vandalized and broken into. Worst part - management DOES NOT RESPOND. They do not respond to phone calls, emails, and even in person visits. Amy, the previous property manager is NOT HERE ANYMORE. They replaced her with people who do not know the first thing about property management. Let's think about this within the context of housing in the SF Bay Area: what is the overall supply like? Yes, exactly. ;) While there are a few structural changes I would change if I were the architects and engineers of this building to improve it, given I moved in within 6 months of its completion, at the end of the day, I can live with those, given I understand the tricky regulations under which The Standard must comply to build new housing supply within NorCal. Therefore, those are non-issues. What matters to me in a home is my relationship with both management and with maintenance, and I could not speak more highly of Cristal, Amy, Nicole, George, and Raymond. I experienced massive culture shock as I returned to my chosen "home" of the SF Bay Area in spring 2018, and saw that Silicon Valley had - in fact - not changed since Ellen Pao, as I had expected. Regardless of this fact for me at work as a woman in tech, I loved the relationship I built - especially with Amy & Nicole, who I knew the longest - and ultimately with Cristal, as she was a welcome addition. I also loved George's intelligence and kindness every time I ran into him, and even gave him a goodbye hug and a thank you. I experienced a variety of work and health challenges last winter: 2018/2019, and Amy and Nicole became like family for me. I still miss them now. And when Cristal took over as manager, she added a level of professionalism, equality, ethics, and pragmatism to the job that was a huge breath of fresh air. I trusted her to enforce the rules fairly. That's one of the main things I loved about living at The Standard: Cristal and Amy are truly two of the absolute best property managers in the business, and their knowledge of equality, Fair Housing, and how to provide kind customer service is truly unparalleled. I miss them, and with all future residents of The Standard a brilliant stay in this rare gem of a home within Silicon Valley. :) read more

I previously wrote a review about how wonderful living here is. Let me take that back. The management of this property does not care about the residents. You can sign your lease and then break all kinds of rules in said lease and there are zero consequences. Make noise, sure no problem, have security called over 30 times and have this documented on another resident, who cares. Have a police report, also who cares, we don't respond. Management simply ignores you and does nothing to make your living quality better. What they will do is make excuses for the people that are making noise at all hours. Any compensation for the noise? Nope. Anything being done about the residents making noise? Nope. If you want to live where management does nothing and the residents are miserable, you've found the place to live, WELCOME TO THE STANDARD. read more

This place is a vacation. I'm writing this while relaxing in the community jacuzzi, which I currently have all to myself. I got down to the jacuzzi via one of the many fob-accessible elevators (which, by the way, are in pristine condition, given that this building is only, what, 8-9 months old?) Upon exiting to the 2nd floor, I was greeted by a beautiful outdoor courtyard that has a big pool, fancy little sun chairs and umbrellas, the already mentioned jacuzzi, music speakers, and some combo patio/grill/chill area somewhere behind me that I'm looking forward to using at some point... I locked my door on the way down here out of habit, but had I accidentally left it unlocked, I wouldn't be in a huge rush to get back up there and lock it. This place feels pretty safe. Which brings me to the neighborhood: I went for a walk yesterday hoping to find something nearby to eat. There's a little strip across the street of a few places I'd never heard of, but besides that, your looking at about a mile hike to get anything decent. But, I'm okay with that for now. It looks like there's a lot of new construction coming up around the neighborhood (including a McDonald's, one of my guilty pleasures...) It's a short ride to downtown, though. So all-in-all I'm okay with the less than stellar neighborhood. But, how did I end up here in the first place? I left a job in San Francisco for one down in San Jose, and spent a whole Saturday perusing apartment buildings in hopes of finding the perfect one. I rolled up to The Standard right when the leasing office closed, so all I could do was schedule an appointment for the next weekend. But even just seeing the lobby piqued my interest: this place looked beautiful. I didn't even have a tour, but when I got back to San Francisco, I applied for the last remaining studio apartment (sight unseen). The rent was reasonable. The pictures of the amenities and apartment itself looked amazing. And I was approved. But I still had my doubts. So I contacted who I now know as Amy, and thus began the absolute best leasing experience I've ever had with an apartment manager. Amy took pictures of the actual unit for me. I sent her a barrage of questions, which she answered with timeliness. It was a simple thing, but it's one that often goes overlooked when renting: superior customer service. I was feeling better and better about my choice. Fast forward a week, and it's time for my appointment. I show up an hour early, and Amy hops up and gives me a tour immediately. No attitude that I've seen many times before in other places when someone shows up an hour early for their appointment (okay, I admit, that's my bad...) Just enthusiasm and professionalism (sorry Amy if you're reading this, I told you I was gonna embarrass you.) I was in for a pleasant surprise. The pictures don't do this place justice. It was even better than I imagined. It was so great, that I changed my move-in date to that same day. I got the keys to my new apartment within a couple hours of Amy giving me a tour. But okay, fine, this wouldn't be a balanced review if everything was perfect, right? But when a place is so great, the only thing left to do is nitpick. So, I'll nitpick: The gym is beautiful, but it doesn't have barbell weights. But then again, basically no apartments do, so it makes up for that with plenty of dumbbells, cable machines, space to do calisthenics and yoga, and treadmills. My washer didn't work when I first moved in. Bummer. But I walked down to the leasing office, and Amy sent up maintenance who got to my apartment and fixed the washer within 10 minutes. I went too easy on the neighborhood. It kind of sucks compared to living in downtown San Francisco (at least, for its walk-ability). But it's quiet, and close to downtown San Jose (and it's 10 minutes from my new job). Oh, and the weather is great. False advertisement for the size of my studio. Just kidding; it was just a lot bigger than I expected. Which reminds me, I want to talk about the interior of the unit: the laminate gray wood floors are classy. The high ceilings give me room to breathe. The huge living room windows invite light in to fill the space. And the appliances? Don't get me started with those. New, stainless steel, and loaded with features I will use just to entertain myself when I'm bored, like setting the precise temperature of the water coming from the fridge (which has an ice maker by the way). And the dual thermostats. Oh my goodness, I'm getting excited just thinking about the cooktop. The shower head is the last thing I'll mention. In the eloquent words of our Commander in Chief, it's yuge. So in short? Come at least for Amy's customer service, and stay for... everything else. This place is a vacation. I've gotten burglarized not once, not twice, but THREE times living here. And I only signed a one year lease. The first time, someone decided to break into every single storage unit in this building with a crowbar, and two of our bicycles were stolen. Did the leasing office alert anyone? Nope. Did they do anything? Nope. We had to send email after email requesting a security change/update. A month after our bicycles were gone, they installed a steel plate to stop people from being able to crowbar their way inside. Fantastic. Second time - both of our MOTORcycles were stolen right out of the garage. Did the leasing office alert anyone? Nope. Did they do anything? Nope. Did they say "we'll check the cameras" and then never follow up? Of course!! Third time - In a stroke of sheer luck, one our motorcycles was recovered by SJPD. We were able to get the bike home and stored in the same garage it was previously stolen in. Annnnnd, guess what? Stolen. Again. Did the leasing office alert anyone? Nope. Did they do anything? Nope. Did they say, "we'll check the cameras" and then never follow up? Of course! Oh wait, they DID call and ask for our police report number. But of course no one ever looked at the footage. Or if they did, they never provided anything to the police. Storage Unit Part 1: We rent a storage unit down the hall from our unit for $75 a month. The leasing office did NOT inform us that maintenance was going in and out of it to clean the vents. The maintenance staff did not bother to close our storage unit door all the way so it wasn't even secure. We did not notice until we walked by it and saw the lights on. Pushed the door open without needing a key. Great! Good to know this thing we rent and pay money for isn't even safely closed. And they STILL didn't say anything to us, until I emailed them about it. We were also told by the leasing office that they were in process of rekeying our storage unit and we're supposed to get new keys reaaaaaaaaal soon. Yeah-- we never got them. They never re-keyed it. Storage Unit Part 2: Our storage unit is next to an elevator. One random weekend, someone decided to leave some metal racks by the elevator. They are not mine. They do not belong to me. I didn't touch them. Last night, my fiance went to the storage unit for something unrelated, and look ! Someone put the random metal racks in OUR storage unit. Um??? THESE AREN'T MINE. I didn't put those metal racks there. Why would your maintenance crew just shove it in my storage unit??? ADDING to this, they put them in my unit and damaged a canvas we had in there. THANKS SO MUCH FOR DAMAGING MY PROPERTY. The only pro that came out of them breaking my stuff is the fact that they have now offered to waive all my cleaning/painting fees. *Which, by the way, will be charged REGARDLESS of how much you clean. This isn't exclusive to The Standard, it seems to be something all Greystar properties do. Fire Alarms: I've lived in plenty of apartment units and will say these fire alarms going off at the dumbest hours are usually the residents fault. Some idiot deciding to have a smoke at 4AM. I won't fault the complex for the moron who keeps smoking, but I will blame them for not evicting the selfish prick. Getting your eardrums ruptured and losing sleep is a great way to love your apartment. You'll have to pay me to live in another Greystar property. Greystar is so incompetent, they haven't been able to hold the same staff for a whole year. Another odd thing that happened-- the leasing office called me and asked if I had a patio. What? It's on the floor plan. I don't understand why they had to call and ask me. I think they are starting to schedule tours for my apartment unit but didn't want to.... look at their own floor plans? Lastly, when I signed my move-out notice, I scheduled an apartment walk through with the leasing office at 3PM on a Tuesday. They emailed me back confirming my appointment and to give them an hour window just in case they were late. Sure. Tuesday rolls by, I'm waiting for anyone to come in and do our inspection. No one showed up. So at around 4:30PM that day, I walked over to the leasing office and asked where the hell was my inspection. The lady at the front office pulled out the Manager, who decided to tell me that she knew we had a 3pm scheduled but was in meetings all day with vendors. So basically, you KNEW you had an appointment with me, but instead of reaching out and telling me that you were never going to show up-- you chose to ghost me instead. Not professional AT ALL. Now I'm fuming because I waited an hour and a half to do this inspection. She reassures again me that she'll waive all the cleaning/repainting fees. Ridiculous. So I never got my first inspection, and I never got my final inspection due to staff incompetence. The bright side is they held true to what they said, I was only charged for the last month's utilities and got most of my deposit back with no cleaning fees read more

I will not be renewing my lease once it expires this upcoming fall. I would not recommend moving in here because of the lack of response from property management of the repeated false fire alarms. It will go off at 10pm, 12am, 3am, at least once a month whenever it's most disruptive to you and your family. My pets have been beyond petrified whenever it randomly goes off. Try settling back to sleep when you're awoken by a blaring alarm. If you notice the responses to the reviews, none of them acknowledge the issues of the fire alarms. Besides sending an email of their "sincerest apologies" and that they're "working with the Fire Department and Commercial Fire Protection" after the fact that residents have called to make complaints the morning of, they do not offer any other remedy to residents. This has been an ongoing issue for a while and they still can't figure out how to fix the issue. The property management had a security guard patrol in November - January timeframe, however, they're no where to be seen now. I'm assuming they were let go or they stopped services because they didn't care about the residents' belongings that were stolen or broken into. Also, since moving into the building in September 2020, there's been turnover of staff at least once a month. The hot tub has been broken and the last communication on it was sent out on March 2021. We have been here since January and it has been a positive experience so far. Management has been accommodating and we are thankful they have responded quickly & well to feedback. Security has been on it in terms of keeping a presence. Dog park is big and grounds are nicely kept up. The area has good places for walking. Downtown SJ and WG are near by along with the LG trail. The Standard is seriously a hidden gem in the endless sea of luxury apartments. We looked at a ton of apartments before deciding on The Standard and I mean, a TON! While there were many complexes that were beautiful with state of the art amenities and gorgeous living spaces, there was always something a little off about them (lackluster Yelp reviews, odd smells, outrageous parking fees, unsupportive leasing teams, etc) - the Standard really stood out from the pack by just not having any of the aforementioned issues while still possessing all the positive attributes of a luxe apartment. What really stands out about the Standard is their leasing office team led by Amy. All the reviews praising Amy for her consummate professional and friendly personality - they are true! Amy is awesome! I have never met a more thoughtful, considerate, and charming leasing office employee. Everyone else on Amy's team is wonderful as well! Living at the Standard was a true joy. The apartment itself was beautiful, parking was easy, the many amenities/pet amenities (the pool, hot tub, the various lounges, the dog park, dog wash) were always very enjoyable to use. The maintenance team was always very responsive to every request/issue and the custodial/grounds keeping team seriously does an amazing job of maintaining the cleanliness of the complex. It always felt like "Japanese/Korean" clean while living there (if you know what I mean)- it also always smelled great. I don't know what cleaning products they use but they should make a candle out of it! We have since moved away from the Standard since we bought a house - but our time living there will always be a beautiful memory. We highly recommend The Standard to anyone looking for a great place to rent/live! read more

To keep it as "short" as I can: -have lived here for 3 years & it was amazing because of Amy & her staff -change of management in mid 2020 has ruined the apt -numerous car break-ins, package theft, mail break-in, & unit break-ins -new management is TERRIBLE. they don't care about the residents whatsoever. they almost NEVER respond to emails or calls -they've done nothing to address any of the issues that have been occurring and haven't emailed the rest of the residents to fill them in even though they said they would -they've done nothing to look in -security is completely USELESS -great amenities that we can't use. they use COVID as the excuse to not accept packages & close all amenities. other apts allow use of BBQs & rooms if scheduled & sanitized -constant false fire alarms that will blow your eardrums in the middle of the night -extremely overpriced for lack of good management, no amenities, & terrible walkability Can't wait to break my lease and get the hell out of here. Fake fire alarms at 3am all the time. Car got broken into, our bike room got broken into and everything was stolen. Property management does not care or even send out any messages to us. To sum it up, calling yourself luxury doesn't automatically make you luxurious. You have to provide amenities and quality of life to earn that title. The following are some bullet points of the problems we had during the 2 years we lived here (2018-September 2020): - There is not enough parking for the residents in the building. There is a garage but you only get one space per apartment. The lot around the building does not have enough spaces for all the residents that would need it, as I was told by the leasing office. I work late hours and I constantly had to park in the dialysis clinic neighboring the complex. I was told I could be on a waiting list to get an assigned uncovered spot. I never did get a spot despite living there for 2 years. - There is no security. My husband's truck was broken into twice in two months. Once while he was parked in the open air lot and once while he was parked underground in the gated lot. The apartment complex did nothing to up security after this happened. I also had my car broken into once while I was parked in the open air lot. - The apartment complex is very noisy. We had to move from the original apartment we leased to another unit due to noise. Instead of letting us move, the Standard made us sign another year lease. We continued to have noise problems and constantly had to tell our neighbors to keep it down/call security. We both work long hours and it was very hard to relax at home. - The fire alarms go off constantly. In one month, the fire alarms for the entire complex went off 3 times with no explanation. This is during COVID so we had to evacuate in the stairwells in the middle of the night with everyone in the complex. The Standard did not address this problem to my knowledge and told me, when I complained, that it was due to ppl smoking in their units and they couldn't do anything about that. - My husband lost his job during COVID and we tried to get out of our lease. The Standard's solution was that they were going to treat this as a lease break. Aka we could pay 6000 bucks to get out of the lease. Not exactly an option for someone who couldn't pay their regular rent. - The layout of the complex is super inconvenient for getting anything up to your apartment, especially if you park in the lot. You have to buzz in multiple times to get up to the floors, which is impossible if you have groceries in your hands. The packages are not delivered to your door and the leasing office is never open. Sometimes the packages are delivered to the lockers but getting oversized packages up through the multiple buzz in system is a nightmare. I dropped so many things trying to get everything through these doors that I eventually had to get a little grocery cart for myself. - The intercom call box has been broken since 2018. To my knowledge, it still has never been fixed so you can't buzz ppl into the gate. The above things really made living at our apartment a drag but it was really awful considering we paid almost 3500 a month for our apartment. I'm writing this review in the hopes that anyone who is looking for a relaxing and calming home environment avoids this expensive place. read more

We have lived in the Standard for almost 2 years. Amy, the previous manager was simply amazing and would sort whatever issue you were going through within hours. During the second year, the management team changed and it's all gone downhill since then. The building has constant fire alarm issues, most often in the middle of the night. Cars, mailboxes, and bike rooms have been broken into. The fob system was down for over a week with constant promises that it would be fixed "today". We have sent several emails to the leasing office staff, and greystar themselves and have received no replies. The amenities have been open for a while but as the office never reply to emails you are unable to reserve them. The temporary leasing office staff don't care about the community and that is clear. The two permanent members that had a semblance of care were mysteriously replaced on the same day. There was a great maintenance employee called Brenda who has also mysteriously not been around for a while. A security guard was replaced for being "too friendly" with residents. We went to the office to ask for a package that was dropped off and they dismissed me as they "don't take in packages". My partner came back down with me and low and behold it was in their holding room. I have no hope for the future of the Standard, I will certainly be leaving the property when my lease is up and I know many others that have/will leave too. Many of my friends live in properties that have offered residents lower rents due to the pandemic. Not here, they don't care about loyalty and blatantly offer apartments to new residents that are significantly less than current residents are paying. This review could likely have been avoided should someone have replied to one of the four emails I've sent. A year ago I would have highly recommended this property. Now? Stay away and spend your money elsewhere. read more

Pretty disappointed with the experience of living here overall. We hear the upstairs neighbours every night stomping around and have notified resident services multiple times without any resolution. The folks here do not communicate. Multiple emails go unanswered. It was amazing when Amy was around. Greystar seems clueless of what their staff are doing or they just don't care. If your looking for a place to live DON'T be fooled by this company Management is super rude, every single time I talked to a staff member that required a follow up, I never got one, especially y****da. Tons and tons of theft here. We got countless emails about bike theft Basement flooding issues, there's sewer leaking into the basement. Management is lazy and incompetent. For the existing residents they're not reducing the rent ... during a pandemic where you can't use the gym, pool or any of the facilities and most of the resident's don't get their deposit back.   Does this sound like a place you want to live? This is quite a difficult review to post. I found this apartment community through Yelp and the reviews. I knew there was a small sample size and the complex was relatively brand new. On one hand, the staff in the office was phenomenal, as the reviews stated, and I believe they did the best they could given the circumstances. However, on the other hand, as part of the Yelp community I am obligated to share facts of my experience, and to remove all emotion when placing my rating to ensure the final number of stars is reflective of the balance between pros and cons and based on how I would personally recommend this community to my own friends and family. In a nutshell, I moved to this community for a couple of weeks, transferred from one unit to another due to noise/ants, (garbage chute, neighbor noise on all sides and above below, incessant dog barking in patios and by the pool, and an ant infestation), then upon arriving at my second unit, had an even worse issue: cockroaches, other bugs, and an advisory from the regular "Orkin man" that there could be such issues expected from time to time, but that "they will be dead, so no need to worry". What? Really? Yes, I will worry. Dead or alive, I'm not paying $3K for cockroaches. I had actually begun to see several dead outside of the complex, on the sidewalks, on the northern parking garage and also along Lincoln. It was pretty gross. Not a single person had lived in either of the 2 units, they were brand new, and now I was being told that this brand new luxury apartment would be subject to cockroaches? After asking a lot of questions, and reading reviews of neighboring apartments that are owned by the same company, I concluded that the way the properties are developed in this area is such that insects and even rodents (as I heard was the case in a unit above me), are prone to show up, especially if neighbors don't take out their trash and store it in a timely manner. I got an email that was sent to the community warning residents about consequences of their trash not being put down the chute. Here's why that is unfair: I have no trash issues and I take out my trash, but now I, (on the first floor,) am subject to consequences due to neighbors in my building? That's a design flaw, a construction flaw, and the price of going cheap on the super accelerated gentrification of downtown San Jose - no thanks. That won't fly with me. To be clear, this is no fault of the staff of the building, as they do all they can, but I feel it is more the fault of the company, the methods by which they developed the property including and not limited to the materials they used, and their denial about the root causes of these issues. At the end of the day, I was done. I could not move into an almost $3K per month tiny apartment and worry every day about finding dead cockroaches. In one day I found a dead one, next day I found what appeared to be a baby version of some insect (possibly a cockroach), and third day I found another smaller bug, all despite being assured by the Orkin man I wouldn't need to worry because they'll always be "dead". Gee, thanks for the comfort! The corporation denied my request to vacate without penalty, even though I hadn't even unpacked. I was stressed out about starting my new job in tech that I moved out here for, and so I was forced to break my lease and pay a 2 month penalty for a place I never even unpacked in that had cockroaches. My speculative opinion is the company is concerned about letting people out of their lease due to an issue that will be ongoing - which is why I felt it was only fair to warn other potential (and maybe current) residents about what to look out for. Customer service goes a long way. Being treated with respect and kindness is taken for granted nowadays, and it's nice to see a corporation make a real effort to hire better staff in this building (as compared to nearby buildings which you can see for yourself through Yelp reviews where the staff does not have flattering reviews). Jamie, Amy and Nicole were very kind, and I am sorry I had to post this, because they really helped accommodate my shipments for my relocation as well as trying to help me move to a better unit (which ended up having cockroaches), but my experience was inexcusable. The issues I dealt with and ultimately the massively unfair financial penalty, fell under the umbrella of customer service, albeit on the corporate level, but still extremely relevant for the purpose of this review. Living in a home for a few days, finding cockroaches, and asking to leave before being fully unpacked should not constitute paying almost $6K in lease break fees, plus moving expenses for 2 moves, which means I paid almost $10K to not be subjected to these issues. I don't have the time or bandwidth to take legal action, tech workers are super focused on their careers; therefore, 1 star rating EARNED. See photos attached. read more

If you can live with crappy services, frequent break-ins, unmaintained facilities and don't mind paying a high rent for an apartment salvaged in between a train station and a BJ (you know what that really means) lounge, then this is the place for you. All the reviews here are true, and here's mine to add on to the list - Management - Let's just say it doesn't exist. This is a hostel and a very expensive one. If there's a problem, that's your problem bro. Ok let's move on to the next point. Security deposit - They're gonna charge you for every little thing they can no matter how well you maintain the apartment. You're supposed to wear gloves at home cos they charge you for fingerprint marks on the wall! Whatever mediocre amount that's left of your deposit should be returned back to you in 21 calendar days. That's the state law but this dishonest place is gonna tell you it's 21 business days instead! Nvm that, I had more than $4000 in deposit that was not returned after 30 days. Sent multiple emails, made a few phonecalls and nothing happened. They probably bought new shoes for themselves. I had to trigger an action in small claims court to get my cheque back. Seriously. Maintenance - Brenda & George, if you guys are reading this, I hope you've found something way better out there. You both deserve better employers. Thank you for your great service! If you don't know the story, these 2 guys were the only positive thing that's left after Greystar took over, and of course they got fired, for doing their job well. Total disgust. It goes without saying then that this place became a mess after that. Try leaving a small piece of thrash somewhere within the complex. Two weeks later it'll still be there. My dishwasher was down. 3 months later and it was still not fixed. Covid seems to be the best excuse for everything these days. Covid-19 - Leaving a hand sanitizer in the elevators is supposed to be enough to curb the spread of covid. Of course it's not true - there was a period where a few of us and a staff contracted the virus. I can't proof that it's the living condition but hey when's the last time you wiped things down? Oh wait you're not even wearing a mask Ma'am? Fire alarm - Twice a month, if you're lucky, it's gonna go off right when you're in deep sleep. If you don't get a heart attack right away, you have to evacuate and then toss and curse in bed trying to go back to sleep. In a tiny 2 bedroom apartment, there're 3 alarms. You can imagine how freaking loud it is when it happens. The pets and the kids get super terrified needless to say. My daughter went through this hell from infant to toddler and she's completely traumatized by it. Not funny. Construction - The entire building is cheaply made. After all they're gonna rent it out so who cares right. My neighbors are not noisy but I can hear what's going on in their units cos the walls are so thin! I'm not even talking about loud music or dogs barking. I can hear my neighbor coughing at night, their alarms beeping in the morning. I know when the guy above me is up cos I hear his footsteps! I told you it's a hostel. I'm definitely not a hostel kind of person. So I packed up and searched for a better place. read more

When I first visited The Standard, I was a guest of a resident. I would make frequent trips from Los Angeles to San Jose and would reside at the community. I was impressed with the amenity spaces, upkeep and quietness of the building. Maybe because I lived across a hospital in Los Angeles and heard sirens everyday. I was also impressed with the noise levels coming from the neighbors above. It was minimal and nothing compared to how loud it was to my apartment in Los Angeles. It is apartment living. You're going to hear noise wherever you go, but The Standard really invested in the insulation between floors. When I made the move to San Jose, I officially became a resident of the community. I applied with Amy, who made it a seamless process, and gave me my keys within 48 hours. She's been an amazing community manager compared to others I've encountered. A special shout out to the maintenance team for keeping this building immaculate. Towels in the gym are always folded nicely, smells nice in the corridor areas and grills are cleaned daily. Nowhere is going to be a perfect place to live. There's always going to be cons, but this community is one of the best in the area! read more

The Standard is a great place to check out during your apartment search in the Bay Area. It's a brand new community in the heart of willow glen. They have excellent amenities (pool, two story gym, and rooftop among many more), as well as they're located in a prime area. They're 2 minutes from Downtown willow glen, 5 minutes from Santana row, and 10 minutes from downtown San Jose! The apartments themselves are really nice, I loved the one bedroom. It was super spacious and had a really nice balcony with two door access. The closet in the room was HUGE too, one thing I appreciate is that there is ample storage in the kitchen, bathroom and closet. With everything above said, I think the biggest factor in my satisfaction with the standard is the staff. Amy and Nicole are just amazing and so friendly. They never make you feel like you're asking too much, like some apartment complexes do. I always loved stopping by the office to get a package or just say hi I lived here for a total of a year but my lease has now finished and I'm sad to leave! There's literally nothing bad to say about this place at all. The only thing that was slightly inconvenient was the elevators every month or so would temporarily stop working but even that was something so minor for this amazing place and everything it has to offer. If I'm ever in San Jose again I'll definitely live here once more! read more

I feel compelled to update my original review since I no longer feel The Standard is worth 5 stars. We lived at The Standard for over 3 years and in the beginning it was fantastic. As others have shared, as soon as Greystar took over managing the building and the original staff left, everything went down hill. Communication to management (MULTIPLE emails or calls) would go unanswered. No action was taken for concerns brought forward. The false alarm fire alarms in the middle of the night grew traumatic for us and our cat. When I got the news of my relocation it was such a relief to know we would no longer have to live at The Standard. read more

We lived here for a year in that year there were a number of safety issues. On one occasion a transient man was sleeping in one of the storage rooms and had been opening packages, there was a resident that was stealing packages from other residents until they were arrested for stealing shoes, the final straw for us was waking up one morning to a transient person with arrows "sleeping" outside on a bench. Management doesn't do as good of a job as they could do. On numerous occasions I had to follow up on my emails more than once, I would write 2nd attempt, 3rd attempt, etc before I would get a response. Most of the time we would learn about incidents from other residents instead of management communicating with their residents or because we would see the cops outside so knew something had happened. We moved out and it was been more than a month and a half and we have still not our refund for our deposit, when we reached out to management they weren't helpful all they said was that the check has already been cut. This could really be a nice place to live if management did a better job. read more
