Very nice food and an excellent atmosphere. We went on a Thursday evening and there were seats available to choose from on the screened in porch, the bar room or the formal dining area. The dining room is best in the winter due to the fireplace but we liked the porch for a cool summer evening. We ate the Chile relleno and a burger. Both were outstanding. I asked for the burger to be med rare and I was pleased to have it cooked perfectly. Most restaurants over cook med rare but this fresh formed burger was thick, pink and juicy. Lovely find for our weekend in the Catskills! My kids and I enjoyed the very friendly atmosphere and food immensely. We met the owners and they are warm and welcoming. The restaurant itself is really cute and cozy and the owner is very friendly. The food isn't great. I ordered the beet tartare and the octopus. Both were devoid of flavor and the octopus was overcooked. My companion ordered steak and salad. The salad was fresh, with subpar dressing and the steak was ok. The menu and food need improvement. Perhaps, just focus on more simple, local fare and do that well? The waitress tried a bit too hard if that's possible? It felt awkward. This place has such unrealized potential. I used to love this place when it was murphy's bistro so I had to try it now that it is The Spy. The ambiance here is so relaxing. There are string lights over the screened in patio and the light breeze that came through made it the perfect place to enjoy a meal. Our server was very cheerful and attentive. To start I ordered a Hibiscus Margarita. The margarita was just okay. It tasted very strongly of a premade margarita mix and the rim was bare, despite accepting their offer of salt. With a hibiscus margarita I would have preferred a sugared rim anyways. For dinner I shared the Spy Burger and some Fish Tacos. The burger was very good, though I wasn't a big fan of the house pickles on it. It was served with Parmesan fries which were also really great. The fish tacos felt like they were missing something. The fish was excellent, but the taco as a whole was pretty bland. For dessert I ordered a mudslide cookie ice cream sandwich. The cookie was nice and warm, but terribly dry. Luckily the peanut butter ice cream helped remedy that situation. Overall, it was a very cute place and I really wanted to like it, but as of right now it's just not for me. read more

My wife and I returned (yet again) to the Spy last night. The patio was open so we opted to dine outside. I'm not one to battle flying insects with one hand while forking my food with the other but I must appease my wife ;-) I must first tell you that the patio was completely screened. Not a single insect to be concerned about. It was a perfect evening for outdoor dining. As usual, the service was perfect. The food was timely, freshly cooked and delicious. My wife had the asparagus and leek soup and I had fried calamari to start. For dinner she had salmon and I had their signature impossible burger. We shared the pear cobbler for dessert. Like I said earlier, the food was perfect. My ONLY constructive criticism for the Spy would be: please pave the parking area. It is a dirt area that is uneven and laden with hazardous grooves. We've gone to the Spy in the winter after snow and the parking lot is a slushy, muddy mess. Last night the weather was perfect. My wife wore heels and nearly twisted an ankle. It is frustrating to go to a first class restaurant with a third world parking lot. read more

Phenomenal restaurant with a great outdoor seating area with heaters. We were visiting the area for just a couple of nights and swung by last minute and they were able to accommodate us. The burger and the roasted chicken were both excellent and the service was stand-out. Having been a fan of the northern spy (the earlier version of this Resturant ) I was very happy to see it reopen . The menu has changed but is still inventive with a great blending of locally sourced ingredients with tremendous thought toward flavor pairings . My wife is a vegan I am not and we had no trouble finding extremely well prepared and tasty items for both as well as an excellent beer selection. As a bonus the service was exceptional and the owners extremely friendly and fun to talk with. We will be returning soon!! read more

I am surprised that many gave this restaurant a positive review. The woman-hostess-owner ? Is simply a vile, miserable person. I was served completely inedible food (raw) and she gave me an attitude because I sent it back. I didn't want anything in place of it because we had already waited SO LONG for our meal. She flipped out and told me she was charging me. Are you serious? She actually yelled at us. We refused to pay for the meal I couldn't eat and she told us we weren't welcome back. Damn. Great customer service, was a little worried about entering the restaurant due to taking care of some older relatives, but the staff were very accommodating and provided a safe outdoor payment/pickup. It has always been a crap shoot here but my last experience was upsetting and insulting. Frankly I don't know why I stayed. I went the other night for a cocktail. The owner greeted my companion, asked what he wanted to drink and walked away. I had to ask her if I could order and she said, sure, when I am done with some other orders. If I hadn't asked, I don't think she would have served me. my drink came, watered down and tasteless. Another friend went tonight and was almost turned away. The owner told her there was no room even though the restaurant was empty. Her drink was the same as mine, so bad that she sent it back. My three friends did not enjoy the bland food they received and I specifically ordered a hamburger ... Medium... it came grey and dry. Not very good for a $13.00 burger. This was one of my FAVORITE haunts when I lived in High Falls a few years ago, back then it was called "The Northern Spy". I, along with many friends, would go quite regularly for a cocktail or two and an order of the Free-Range Tofu Wings.....the most amazingly delicious tofu you will ever consume! I was so sad when they decided to close, even though I no longer lived in the area it was sad to know I couldn't make the trip when the mood for tofu wings hit me. Well, as luck would have it (for their many loyal customers anyways) they have returned and have picked right up where they left off. They decided to shorten the name to simply "The Spy" but other than that there are few changes to the decor and menu - Free-Range Tofu Wings can be seen at almost every table and in front of every person sitting at the bar. My favorite cocktail, The Northern Spy, is also back and just as delicious as ever. So, so happy to see George and Brigitte once again....I now have another good excuse to get back to High Falls more often. read more

If you have food allergies, DO NOT EAT HERE!! (And the service sucks too! Food wasn't great either) After my son started eating his pasta, I decided to just make sure there were no eggs in it. Box pasta never has egg but homemade pasta usually does. Seems like a straightforward question that should get a straightforward answer, right? Wrong! The waitress went back to the kitchen 5 separate times to ask and each time I got a non definitive answer, such as "well it kind of has egg but not really" and "it has egg but when you cook it, the egg goes away". WHAT??!? Then I asked to speak to the chef and she came back and said "the chef can't leave the kitchen. After 10 minutes of looking for a manager or someone who could just get us an answer, I was told that the manager is the chef in the kitchen. Then, as if this wasn't bad enough, another lady came in hot, yelling at us that the other people are looking at us and that we're making a scene, which we were not. Meanwhile, I'm just pretty frantic that my son ate it already and I cannot get a straight answer. This lady was too worried about the appearance to the other patrons that she totally neglected the safety and welfare of a small child eating at her restaurant. She was extremely unprofessional and had zero compassion for our situation. She was belittling us and making us feel like we were completely wrong. Mind you, I've eaten at many many restaurants with my son, all over the country and in many other countries as well and I've never encountered anything like this, where an allergy was not taken seriously, and totally brushed off. I felt like I was in the twilight zone. Ended up, it was box pasta and there was no egg! It says it right on the box!!! Needless to say DO NOT EAT HERE! There is a blatant disregard for human safety. The Spy is among our favorite places to hang out, enjoy delicious food and drinks, and make friends at the gorgeous vintage curved wooden bar. Owner George Nagle is often mixing drinks and greeting guests, creating a homey, friendly atmosphere. The chef uses local ingredients in season to produce delicious plates - some adventurous and intriguing, and some as simple as a perfectly grilled burger. Our favorite is the "free range tofu wings" which is an immensely popular platter of crispy tofu slices drenched in buffalo, chipotle, or sesame sauce and served piping hot. Maybe we came on an off night. The restaurant was only half full and we waited over an hour for our food. My husband's pork loin was overcooked and dry and my veggie burger had an overwhelming amount of rosemary and salt in it making it inedible. Our waiter apologized over and over for the delay and the food and offered us free drinks. We also heard other servers apologizing to customers. We are very disappointed as we heard great things about this restaurant and based on the food and service couldn't believe it was the same place. read more
