I can't tell you anything much different from the other reviewers. You know the basics - it's cheap, it's in an alley, it gets rather stuffy, and you can buy earplugs, water, and vegan cupcakes on any given night. The entire building is tagged and the chairs are donated from dead cars. I was once told (rumor) that the building that houses the Smell was once owned by Andy Warhol. I wouldn't be surprised. Stranger things have been true. If you want to experience... then come to this venue. I'm not going to tell you what to come here expecting to experience. Simply attend with an open mind and open heart willing to experience.

Sweet little nostalgic lion stamp- oh to be 18 once upon a time. AT least they don't do GIANT x's on your hand.

Tonight I visited this sweet spot that hosts cool gigs. I'm sure this place has booked tons of new and classic sounds. I could already tell by the murals, stickers, and random displays. I genuiinely did love the grungey realness surrounding me. Didn't expect it to be a dry venue, but hey some people get crazy under the influence. Also, I could totally understand crowd control when it comes to such an intimate space (with little ventilation). Plus side: it is so rad to see real musicians jam heavy on their instruments. The sound is a little overwhelming, but that is what true rock and roll (indie, metal, funk, etc.) is about- being totally immersed in a bands creativite process and production. Kudos to all the up and comer's out there, for all their bravery and relentless creativity. The Smell gives these bands the opportunity to express all that. Doorman could be nicer THO. Wouldn't necessarily come back unless I knew who was playing.

Ah man, weird review for me. Up to about 4 years or so ago I would've given it 10 stars! Street parking WAS shady (our car got broken into 4 out of the first 5 times i went here, then i learned it's worth it to give the bums a couple bucks to watch your car for you). It really DID smell (the maggots lined the back alleyway about an inch thick and you'd always come home with human feces on your shoes). You could drink, see all your friends, not have to worry about adults or lights or anything that resembles civilization interfering with your punk utopia. I used to get a ride up from Orange County every few weeks to see some new awesome touring band. Then Dystopia played to a crowd much too big for the Smell. Riot cops swarmed the place, police helicopters everywhere, cops closing the streets down and using their cars as giant battering rams to push all the punks onto the streets of downtown. I didn't get into the show, and yeah, I was pissed as hell at the time! But looking back on things, it was probably just as exciting outside as it was inside. I came here a couple weeks ago and it's a whole different ballgame. Streetlights lined the streets. You had to pay an actual attendant for parking. Girls were walking around in dresses and heels! And what scared me the most was the candlelit sidewalk dining going on at the restaurant across the street!! I would've NEVER predicted ANY of that from the Skid Row Smell I once knew and loved. And it's not just the area that's changing, but the Smell has changed a lot as well. Pretty strict No Alcohol policy. I don't think they really book any punk/crust/hardcore bands anymore. There's a definite Smell scene comprised of bands like No Age and Mika Miko - and it seems like those two bands (or members of those bands) play every single show. It's still kind of fun and it's a great little scene they got there, it's just not really my thing anymore. Still a much better place to see a band than any other legal venue in Southern California though, but that's not saying much.

The smell is a hidden gem! It's name can be a little scary but it is a great music venue, one of my favorites. I was apprehensive when I approached the entrance ( because it is in an alley way in the middle of downtown LA) but once inside I could tell it was a really chill place. It is easy to find restaurants near by for food before or after any show. I recommend pitfire pizza or badmaash. You could even walk to little Tokyo! There is plenty if other nighttime activity going around around The Smell which gave me extra security. Between bands people hang out in the alley to smoke and chill. While in the alley you get a glimpse of a lot of cool nighttime LA activity. My favorite aspect of this venue is there all ages all of the time rule. There are so many 21+ shows, which bums me out but I can always rely on The Smell. Another cool thing is that all of the tickets are $5! Nice! The only thing that worries me is that you cannot buy your tickets ahead of time so you run the risk of the show being sold out. So I recommend getting there early because a lot of shows actually do sell out. The scene here is very young and depending on the band it can get very crazy in here. I saw Coachwhips preform and it was intense; I still have bruises. Out of all the venues I have gone to, there is none like the smell. It is a super rad, casual place to hang out with friends and see an awesome inexpensive show. *go to the bathroom before hand! I would not trust the bathroom here (just look at the photos)!!

The Smell is a unique venue with an equally unique crowd. The time we came there was a fashion show where every competitor was wearing a dress and judged by the volume of the crowd's cheering. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/the-smell-los-angeles?userid=4MHFQcFfHzVe4ISx3lvHlw#LEcUQ0vAtcCHSqT-QUj3Qw Mind you girls AND guys were competing. With regards to music taste, we came to see bands such as Pizza. A devoted fan even waved a large pizza box in the air as they were playing... dedication man. They serve hot green tea for $1 in the back but mind you NO alcohol is served. There used to be a hobo that acted as a security guard for years but was recently arrested (article on LA Times) and he used to guard the smell and accompany people to their cars in order to protect them. Turns out he always had a knife (or machete) under his coat... now is it really a surprise he got arrested... But he still added to the unique atmosphere of the Smell. Cover is around $10 I believe? Standard. Small venue however, don't expect a huge auditorium.

This place was fucking awesome last night. Came here to see The High Curbs, Hexed, The Chonks, and Daylake ! All bands were great and very unique. The pits were awesome. Has the right amount of people for the place inside. It's pretty cool in there. you get to feel the A/C if your not moshing of course. The lights might be a bother for some people's eyes when the bands play. They go crazy flashing on an off fucking fast but it's perfect and awesome !!! If you go here, make sure once you see " Not Our President" , go to the left where you see an " ATM " and there's a parking lot/alley. you go in and make a right and you'll see people out side of The Smell as well. Some people including myself had troubles finding it, but we found it quickly .

But once you find it, it's large, gated, and has a couple attendants watching the cars. You go upstairs and it opens up into a decent sized space. Large enough to hold people and dance, and small enough that you can see the band from every point in the bar. It has a long bar when you enter and looks like they'll take care of you for the night. At the far end of the venue is a little space. I'm not sure if they use that as their green room cuz it wasn't inviting you to come in. Overall, I think it's a decent venue. Not sure if the sound was an issue w the bands' equipment or The Paramount. I'd go back if a fave band of mine is playing.

I don't recall seeing an elevator so call before hand if you're in a wheel chair or are on crutches, because you have to go up a flight of stairs to get into the venue. Inside, it's cute and definitely looks like an old dance hall from the 1900's. I'd say this was a medium sized venue. The stage wasn't terribly high off the ground. There's a big, beautiful, bar and a disco ball and it has a lot of charm since it's an older venue. Seeing a show here feels less stressful than seeing one in downtown or Hollywood. It's not my favorite venue but it's definitely a good time and more intimate than the downtown venues and free parking is always a plus.

When I saw POPPY perform here years ago right after COVID, it was my first concert here and this place is dope because you're literally so damn close to the artist(s) you watch because the stage isn't too high. Everyone who knows me knows I am a huge music fan and enjoy all genres: If a song, lyric,…read moreperformer or arrangement resonates with me, it doesn't matter who the messenger is. I was lucky enough to see one of my favorite rappers, Lupe Fiasco at the Wiltern on Saturday night for the 20th year anniversary of Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor, his debut, highly acclaimed album. Lupe Fiasco is a smart, incredible writer - his lyrics are filled with social critiques, observations of systematic struggles and the intricate rhyme schemes/detailed storytelling is what draws me to his music. I sat in the first row of the Mezzanine and had a great view of the stage. The theater holds (maybe) 2,000 people, there's not a bad seat in the house. When I bought my ticket, I was asked if I wanted to include parking as part of the purchase and I was going to until I saw the price was $70 dollars - what?! For parking? I decided against it, did my research and took the D line, got off at the Wilshire/Western stop and crossed the street to the Wiltern. Best part was I paid $1.75 total roundtrip (parking was free at the station). Not only was it was inexpensive, it was convenient and I didn't have to deal with traffic or parking. I didn't have any issues getting in, staff and security were friendly and efficient. It was a good crowd, a good mix of ages, some people took their young children, good male/female ratio, everyone behaved and I enjoyed seeing the super fans singing along - I sang my lungs out to Hurt Me Soul, Sunshine and He Say She Say. The show concluded with Touch the Sky and the crowd went crazy. Leaving the Wiltern was easy. While I was standing on the corner waiting to cross the street to the train, someone pulled at my shirt, and it was the Best Kid in the World (aka Nephew No. 1). He was shocked to see me there, that I was at the show by myself, came on the train and had no idea I was a big Lupe fan. We took a selfie under the marquee, I crossed the street, disappeared under the street back to train platform and headed home. There were so many other concert goers on the train headed to the Westside that I felt safe taking the train and making the transfer to the E line at 7th Street stop to my stop (La Cienega /Jefferson). My ONLY complaint of the night was the sound. At first, I thought it was me because I could barely understand what he was saying, but the crowd start yelling for him to turn up the mic. Lupe stopped the show, conferred with his sound people and reperformed two songs. The Wiltern opened in 1931 and is a great, intimate venue to see a live performance. The architecture at this iconic theater has been preserved and I love the unique art deco ceilings/lighting fixtures and the tiled water fountains. I don't like that the seats were pulled from the main floor during the remodel and its first come, first serve, standing room only. I can't do that - grandma needs a seat. Now that I know how easy it is to get to the Wiltern on the D line, I'll be checking the Wiltern schedule more regularly.

Strong drinks, dim lights, and the best new artists!…read more Its been almost 20 years since I first went to a Hotel Cafe, before they had the second stage (which is a great room), when they still had a parking structure in back. It was all a foreign concept to me. Booking three or four or five acts in one night, charging you admission only once based on which act you came in for and most of the time if you came to the first you could stay through the 5th, or as most did, they came to see who they intended to see and maybe saw some of the act that was after and then went out to Hollywood to get some eats with their friends. Hotel Cafe is going away in 2026, but it is not gone, they will just be moving from their iconic Hollywood location, that small room that barely held 150, a small stage in the corner, a few low tables and a bar in the back to a new location in Los Angeles. It is the place where the singer-songwriter movement of the mid-2000s to the mid-2010s hard launched a revival. It's like what the Troubadour was to the Laurel Canyon singers in the 1970s. Sara Bareilles, Ingrid Michaelson, Greg Laswell, Priscilla Ahn, Meiko, Cary Brothers and many others. Adele even played here before her first album released in the US. I saw Sara Bareilles here once and she left everyone in tears after her song and bolted out the back door. I went to the front of the house and her family were blowing out the last of the signed copies her tour posters for only $10 since it was the last show of her tour. I bought a few. I have come here to see a friend like Big Phony sing, and then exit into the back room/lobby and see Hollywood stars entering to see their friend who would be singing next. It's that kind of local spot. The sound was always great and the drinks were well crafted and strong. I recently saw Priscilla Ahn sing here again and it brought back memories of the first time I saw her here, when she only had a 5 track EP CD. When she sang Dream again this year, it felt like everything had come full circle, since that first CD released 20 years ago. I cannot wait to see what the new building looks like, but a huge part of me, like for everyone else that has been here, will miss that little room in the back of the alley, where young dreamers became singers, where singers became stars.
