This was my second time coming to The Skull Museum. The first time was at their old location and I'm honestly blown away by how beautiful the new space is. It's super spacious, bright, and thoughtfully laid out. They have an art gallery area, a section dedicated to displaying skulls, and even a break room space for everyone. I also loved how easy their website made the booking process. Being able to see each artist's work, pricing, and availability all in one place made it really convenient to plan and schedule time off. I was looking to finish my half sleeve and came across Christian Gonzalez's work on their site. I was immediately impressed and knew I had to book with him. I texted the number listed on the website and connected with Mackenzie, who was incredibly responsive, friendly, and quick to answer all my questions. She made the process really smooth, and I was able to secure an appointment about two weeks out! When I arrived, the whole staff was welcoming and friendly. Christian was professional, easy to talk to, and really took the time to understand my inspiration. He worked with me to design something that would flow well with a previous tattoo I already had, doing his best to blend everything together so it looked cohesive. He made sure I liked the design, adjusted details with me, and carefully worked on placement before we started. I got there right when they opened, and after discussing the design and him drawing everything out, we started around noon and wrapped up around 6pm. It's definitely a full day session, so bring snacks and maybe a zip up because it gets a little cold in there! Christian was incredibly gentle with the tattoo and constantly checked in to make sure I was comfortable or needed a break. He charges $1300 for a full day and in my opinion he is absolutely worth it!! I felt comfortable the entire time and I'm in love with how the tattoo turned out. I'll definitely be coming back to finish my sleeve and for any future work. If you're thinking about getting tattooed at The Skull Museum, JUST DO IT! and definitely check out Christian! This place is cool, I kept seeing it while driving by and didn't believe it is really a skull museum, tattoo and art studio but it sure is! It's a super nice place, the artist are all top of their craft, the cute girl at the front gave me a wonderful run down of the place. They have a piercer too with beautiful jewelry to choose from. The earth Angel I got with him prior to this but I just wanted to include it so you can see his work. He's amazing at what he does and he really does bring your vision to life. Don't go to that guy Andy Lopez. He permanently ruined my tattoo and I hit him back up to see if he can fix it and he told me it was small and should fade away when it heals, what a joke he is. I wanted him to just shade it in for me since it will never look the way I wanted it to and I didn't even expect it to be free even though he messed up. Instead he told me next time I come for another tattoo, he'll shade it in that day.. Even suggested for another $400 so he could just add leaves and vines to the tattoo I already paid $500 for.. He doesn't care about you or your tattoo, just your money. Money hungry and has no professionalism. Went out back to smoke weed multiple times too during my session.. Big mistake for allowing him to tattoo my skin while he was high. Beware, choose your artist wisely. Probably good reason why he's been at 4-5 different tattoo shops. read more

I had a half sleeve done by Cory Reynolds. ( instagram: @corytattoos ) the past two days. My family and friends were awed by his work and loved the work he did on me... even my mother and grandmother... I am very picky, as I think you should be with things that stay with you forever. For years I've been searching for an artist that I trusted to put my FIRST piece together. Cory was highly recommended by my sister and brother in law and after looking at his work on Instagram I booked two sessions for the following month. Right of the bat he was super personable, polite and he made me laugh a lot which definitely made me feel comfortable about the whole process. I bounced my ideas off of him and he was very strategic in his approach to starting a sleeve and wanted to make sure everything flowed and blended perfectly. Cory came up with better ideas in 30 minutes than I had in months. He was thorough and guided me through the whole thing, was good at explaining his reasons for doing things. He had great advice to achieve a great final piece that would last. I could tell that was very important to him. After putting something together, under the needle I went. He made sure to check up on me and could tell when I was uncomfortable or if I needed a break. He did a phenomenal job and I was very pleased. His final product speaks for itself in that regard. He asked me to come in an hour earlier the next day. As soon as I walked in, he shared his ideas for the outer forearm and got to work designing my the stencil. Back under the neddle I went. He blended the inner and outer forearm pieces together perfectly. Cory not only gave me pieces I was happy with, he gave me unique art I could be proud to show off to my friends and family. I've been debating for half a year about writing this, and ultimately I felt like it needed to be put out there for others to consider before spending lots of money on a tattoo. My overarching advice is to put energy into consultations and try to speak with an artist before going to get inked. I didn't, and am unfortunately left with a 1/2 finished tattoo that isn't what I wanted. I'm not going to out the artist, who I still believe does good work on others. I just think that they didn't vibe with me, the entire appointment was a nightmare, and it really shows in their work. I cant bring myself to go back to finish the rest of the tattoo because when I really reflect on the experience, I don't want them touching my skin again and it's too bad. The Skull Museum is a great shop with great artists, typically mine included, but I learned some hard lessons that day and have regretted it ever since. I sent 6+ reference photos of the inspiration for the piece that I wanted when I booked. About a week or two before the appointment, I reached out to the artist directly on IG to see if they had any questions or concerns about the design references and said I'd be happy to flesh out my idea before arriving. I'd paid the deposit for the design consultation and knew that it would happen day-of, but still wanted to see if they needed any more info so we could hit the ground running bc I was traveling several hours to get there. They didn't respond, but I figured my message had gone to their requests--oh well. Day of the tattoo came and the weather was absolutely horrendous, but I made it to the shop on time. I met the artist, showed them the references again, and they told me that it would take about 30 minutes to sketch up a design. When they saw my existing pieces, they told me, "That's going to look like shit in 10 years" and then walked off to go do my design. Thirty minutes turned into two hours. I sat there and the artist came up to me and sort of begrudgingly showed their work, saying something like, "Not going to lie, your tattoo idea does not inspire me and I hate it." What they drew was not even the same concept---not even in the same ballpark---as what I'd sent as references. They started explaining things like, "This weather is really bringing me down. I don't really like your reference photos. They are shit and impossible to tattoo..." etc. I told them their design was indeed beautiful, but that it was pretty far from what I outlined to the booking manager. Internally, I was becoming anxious because they were exuding a palpable sense of frustration. To sort of diffuse the situation, I assured them that I don't want them to tattoo something they absolutely hate and I don't mind going slow and considering this a consultation appointment--even if it meant walking away with no ink. I also told them if they were just outright opposed to doing this tattoo, it wouldn't hurt my feelings at all and even if I lost a deposit, it was okay by me. They insisted that they try again and told me to hold tight for a redesign. After another 2 hours, they came back with a totally new design. It was much closer to what I'd originally asked for, but they had added text to the design that I didn't want/ask for. I pointed it out and they got frustrated. When they sensed that I wanted to walk without ink, they laid a guilt trip on me and said that was absolutely not what they wanted and they wanted to make sure to get some ink on me that day, given how long I'd waited and how far I drove and they felt bad. After four hours of stressful waiting, plus the discomfort I'd felt when critiquing their work after they spent hours drawing for me, I eventually and unfortunately relented. I sat in the chair and given the four hour late start, they worked quickly. The text I didn't want, which had looked faint/delicate in the design, came out thick and dark. They finished only half of the tattoo, and told me to email the booking manager for a second appointment. I waited until it healed to judge it and had to admit to myself it is not what I wanted at all. Though I reached out for that second appointment, I ultimately just couldn't force myself to sit in their chair again and be made to feel bad about my body/about my design/about the tattoo/about my other tattoos. I would not say my experience is indicative of the majority of experiences people have at the Skull Museum, both with my artist and all the other artists. Like I said, this was a lesson learned in that sometimes awkwardly walking away, as awful as that feels, is actually the better route to go. Because I didn't, I have a tattoo that makes me sad each time I look at it, because (1) it isn't what I wanted, (2) it feels impossible to fix, and (3) it reminds me of the most sad/uncomfortable tattoo experience I've had. I wanted to write this review so that others might learn from me, and I also wanted to give the shop candid feedback/a summary about how I was treated. read more

I wanted to tattoo my throat/neck area for a very long time. No way to cover it up with clothes and people will see it immediately so I wanted to make sure it was perfect. I looked at artists work for a long time until I stumbled upon Nics IG page. I reached out to the shop (who got back to me really quick) and he was unfortunately booked a long way out. I have a crazy work schedule so I didn't want to commit to something so far out when I dont know if I would be able to get the time off and lose my deposit. I happen to be scrolling through my news feed and noticed Nic had a cancelation the next day. I immediately messaged him directly and he got back to me with the details. I showed up the next morning and was greeted by the receptionist (Nics wife) who was really cool and helpful. Nic introduced himself and listened to my ideas, he's the artist so I wanted him to do his thing. He came back with a few digital images of myself with some designs in on my neck. It was awesome! He tattooed for a few hours and we broke for lunch, he took me to a cool place downtown and bought my lunch. I've been back one additional time for more work by Nic and have had the same great experience. Yes he is on the high side of tattoo prices but good tattoos ain't cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good. I have a ton of tattoos that suck and wish i would have spent the money to have quality art work on my body. I've gotten pierced by Nikey a couple times while he was getting tattooed and I loved my experiences. Overall I did like my tattoo. I love how the crow and flowers were done but when I got the symbol done it was a little uneven so I went back for a touch up and to even it out. But the symbol kinda ended up looking worse. And I mean I'm usually not one to get upset over things but when I pay over 1k for artwork I expect there to be a certain level of consistency to be put into it. The great Danny Jones did my tattoo, he actually freehanded the art which came out simply amazing. They do pretty good work, but their very pricey, and they don't tatoo for a normal full days work for the price you pay, which is normally 8 hours. I was there twice. The first time I paid for a whole day, and my tatoo artist finished in 4 hours, and left a big spot on my arm blank, when he could have finished filling it up the rest of the 4 hours that I paid for. The second time I went, I had to wait 2 hours before I even got ink to skin, and my design wasn't even that complicated to create. That artist did about 5 hours of work, and didn't finish all that I wanted too, which he could have if time wasn't wasted. They start off at $800 for a full day to over $1200 and up. I'd definitely do some looking around to actually see if it's a good deal to come here based off my experience. read more

I planned the concept of my half sleeve about a year before I got it done. I just couldn't find any artists I trusted to put a needle on my skin in the Bay Area!! Nobody can do black and white here!! It's crazy!!! So I was about to head to LA until Nics work appeared on my Instagram. I went to Nic with my idea, he totally got it and started feeding in his thoughts straight away. Ironically he is a very black and white guy too, and will tell you straight up if something will look sh*t. He certainly takes crazy pride in his work. 99% of the time I went with his recommendation and let him go to town on my skin. I had 15 hours over 4 sessions. He works really fast, which is crazy considering the detail. His unique trash polka style has everyone asking about my tattoo. I can't go to the grocery store without having to show 3 people. Tastefully designed and decorated. Everything is done safely and followed Environmental Health and Safety, OSHA, and blood borne pathogen regulations. Mac did an awesome tattoo for me. He is professional and easy to work with and most importantly totally gifted in his aI will be going back for more work from him. He also tattooed my husband and he was very pleased and will be going back for more. Mac gets 5 stars but the business gets 4 stars due to how hard it is to talk to someone for information prior to the tattoo or even on the day of the tattoo when you just want the address to the business. Even upon arrival the front desk person did not know much about parking nearby which is kind of important info for customers who don't want to get towed. This review isn't based on the quality of their work, it's more on the locations process and organization. I had a forearm sleeve tattoo idea in mind that was meaningful to myself that I wanted to get done. I sent them pictures of my forearm that had no tattoos on but my upper arm already had a half sleeve from another artist. We went back and forth for some time until we locked something in. I made myself available, took time out of my day and drive over three hours to get this half sleeve done. When I get there and start talking to the artist they told me that they weren't interested in doing this tattoo because they only do full sleeves. Just really poor organization and no consideration for ones time and effort. They had pictures and knew full well that it was going to be a forearm sleeve. Just seemed to me that it wasn't so much of what I wanted and what had meaning to me but more so what the artist wanted to do and what would look good for their "Instagram". Just giving you all a heads up on what to look out for if you're thinking of going here. read more

The work they do looks really good, however when I emailed them to see if they'd do my tattoo they said I'd have to do laser to remove my 3 inch tattoo before they would do any work on me. They said they "wanted a clean slate." My husband had some work done there a few years back and the experience was good, but these guys now act they're too good to be bothered by anyone. I am not your average customer. I'm a middle-aged woman who has an obsession with tattoos. Finally, my husband said "You know, you could get one." It took me a while to find the what, where, when, and who. I now have three fairly major tattoos, one on my shoulder/upper arm, one on my calf, and the third one on my upper arm which was done by Chris Youngblood here at The Skull Museum. Chris was great and the tattoo is technically perfect. His black and white work is exquisite. I'm going against the tide here and giving the shop (NOT Chris) a bit of a bad review. First, the shop is very testosterone-filled. Nic just exudes alpha male dominance. For a young man wanting an edgy tattoo, he's probably perfect. I know Nic is talented. It was just not a very welcoming environment for anyone not fitting that demographic, or at least not for me. But Nic completely ignored me until...it was probably about 2.5 hours in and I was fading. I brought a candy bar and a drink to keep my blood sugar up. Chris was taking a break, and I pulled out my Kit-Kat and just kind of wolfed it down. Then Nic just jumps all over me. "You're NOT allowed to have food here, it's against the health code. You need to step over to the office." Not nice, not gentle. I felt like a naughty kid on the playground getting snapped at by the principal. By then Chris was back and he seemed a little embarrassed, but Nic is his boss so what's he going to do. I've been tattooed before at other places and had a quick snack and sugary drink at the station, and no one has said anything. In fact, they encourage it because you need to stay fed and hydrated for these multi-hour sessions. There were no signs saying no eating (I looked afterward), and I swear I saw a guy at Nic's station drinking a beer (maybe he was behind a little pony wall so technically out of the work area - I don't remember). But I do remember the beer can sitting on the pony (maybe 3' high) wall next to Nic's station. Maybe it's on Chris for not telling me, but everyone in the room seemed a bit surprised by Nic's rather loud, intense outburst. Maybe Nic didn't like my uncool demographic and just didn't want me back. If so, mission accomplished. Against health code, or not, I was paying probably close to $700 for this tattoo, and to be spoken to like that by the owner really ruined the experience for me. Found this place randomly online based on a photo I really liked. Glad to find out that the studio was not too far from me. I almost traveled down to San Diego to get my tattoo. So glad I didn't. I love the look and feel of this studio. It's a tattoo studio and a skull museum in one. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. The studio itself is located in Old Sac area. My artist was Chris Youngblood. He was awesome! Very easy to work with and he came up with some ideas that suited my needs.
