Followed some great Yelp advise and ventured here while visiting our son on the Naval base. The menu selections were vast and could satisfy anyones level of taste for comfort foods. We came here after my son's PIR. It was quick and conveniently located from Great Lakes Naval Station. The fired mushrooms were homemade and came out piping hot! A three to three and a half stars type place for me. Decent to good food and drinks, nice service, kinda pricey menu items and a family friendly atmosphere. This is a local establishment that has been around for a while. It offers American style food (burgers, sandwiches, wings, soups, beer, etc.). The restaurant is housed in a barn/ silo type building. It has the old fashioned, wooden charm and a rustic decor. Their claim to fame is their pan pizza. The pizza sauce is what makes that pan pizza good but overall, that pizza is just decent and not anything special. Their thin crust pizza is just so-so and the pizza sauce on it is different in taste than the pizza. It does not taste good. I forget the difference between the two pizza sauces right now that our server had explained. The buffalo wings and the french onion soup were pretty decent. Their pan pizza is kinda ridiculously over priced (see their menu). I don't even know how they could have priced it like that. The pizza is not that good to warrant such prices. Their small pan pizza might as well be considered a personal size. It's too small for a small. Although it may be a popular local establishment, it is a bit overrated. I would go here every once in a long while and not frequently. read more

Tried the Silo for the first time this past month. Had their Supreme pan pizza and Silo salad delivered. Both items hit the spot after a long day of meetings. Price was reasonable for the quality and I've added them to my short list of options when traveling to the Lake County Area. Will have to try dining in on a future visit! read more

I loved the personal pan pizza I had with olive oil cheese and mushroom that I ordered specially ! We went with a big group of three classes from the school of special needs students that I work at so it was a little overwhelming for some of our dear students ! Was in there today for lunch with a bunch of fellow coworkers, some who were with me when I wrote my last review. I told them about the thin pizza and we agreed to get one along with a couple pan pizzas and about a dozen pitchers of beer but not all at once you see. I started with the thin and it was as good as I remember from my last review/visit. I did have a slice of pan which I'm not as big of a fan. I have changed my mind on that since it was every bit as good as the thin. The crust was so flavorful. I think a change was made to a butter type crust?? It was really tasty. All eight of us were commenting on how good the pizza was! The thin has the cheese that rolls/cooks off the edge and gets caramelizes on the pan making the 'edge' pieces more desirable then the middle pieces. I wish the pan had that as well because the edges have too much dough, that space could be used for more ingredients and cheese caramelization:) I guarantee it won't be a year between visits any longer. read more

Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. I understand people just love love love The Silo. It's a local institution. My hubby who grew up in the region has fond memories of going here after high school soccer games (in the 80s I'll point out). The interior of the Silo, to be honest, is still stuck in the 80s. It's rather dark inside. They have kids games (which is awesome when the kids are waiting) but the games are from that era -- etch a sketch, water games where you try to get the rings on the pegs. I haven't seen these for years. There are two trains that run along the ceiling downstairs that my boys just adore. And the family friendly trains and games have saved this review from being a one star. Why would it be a one star otherwise: the food which is marginal at best. I've tried a number of dishes (we come back because it's so kid-friendly) but as an adult, I should be able to enjoy my dinner too. Everything is heavy fried, starch-filled or just plain ugh. The best solution I've found is to order the tuna sandwich and pick my way the dry croissant it's served on. And occasionally they have fruit so I can substitute for the so-so fries. If you've got kids, I can understand coming here as a chance to get out of the house and not cook. Other than that, I just don't get it. read more

I won't ever be returning here again and that's a bummer because I used to love this place. Had a younger waiter, and he was the worst. Ordered the Idaho spuds with everything on the side except for the beef and cheese. It comes out with lettuce and tomato and instead of bringing it back he just says yea it came out like this, not even a sorry. Had ordered an ice tea with no ice and he puts ice in it. Takes 10 minutes to bring boxes and he brings pizza boxes instead of regular to go boxes. Everything about it was horrible and it was a waste of time and money for me. Came here because I was in the area. I tried the corn and shrimp salad. Basically just romaine, corn and boiled shrimp on a plate. One tomato. They were very generous on the shrimp but they weren't seasoned or seared in any way. I got the salsa ranch on the side and it was good. Overall mediocre. read more

When management got back to us through email they said, "There were no ants on the pizza when it left the Silo. No refund. " Who talks like that to a customer? As a local pizza enthusiast I can honestly say silo pizza is special. The light but thick bubbly buttery crust with chunky sweet stewed tomatoes and perfectly melted cheese is mouth watering. It's different from conventional pizza and deep dish in my opinion. It's unique and a reason this place has been around since 1968. I'd you haven't tried their pizza order order it tonight you won't be disappointed. I ordered on door dash pizza arrived hot and on time. The menu IMO is pretty extensive. This place needs to focus on what they do best pizza and burgers. Get the other stuff or at least trim more than half the other stuff off your menu and you'll be more profitable as a company. I ordered veggie potato skins. The frozen veggies don't match with the quality of pizza. This is why it wasn't 5 stars. Mediocre or subpar food diminishes perception of what silo does better than anyone else, PIZZA! Very seriously silo could franchise or license out and open just pizza cary out/ delivery spots and give Lou malnatis (another pizza I like) a run for their money. The Silo has been around for as long as I can remember. I grew up with it as the primary pizza place for my family. Their deep dish is to die for. We always get the supreme because it's got a taste of everything. If you're looking for something without meat though, try the Frisco. It's a great substitute. And if you want to dine at home, they have the option of pizza pick-up. read more

Dropping rating down to 2 stars. Since my last review, I've come back 3 more times. The last two times were with coworkers during weekday lunch. 1. Chicken pasta bowl Subpar. I probably could have made better pasta. It was pretty much just pasta (which was overcooked), chicken, marinara sauce, and a piece of bread. 2. Teriyaki chicken Subpar. Not much to say except that a large size is two pieces of chicken, and it came with veggies and a baked potato. Service was subpar, and one of the waitresses came off a bit rude. If you do come here, do yourself a favor and stick to the pizza. At least it's okay at best. read more

We decided to stop by this place based on its unusual exterior design. It looks like a giant barn and but it was never one. The overall experience was pleasant and we really enjoyed the outdoor patio. But the food was not something we'd come back for. One dish that really stood out was the seafood pizza. Really interesting. It's like eating a seafood Alfredo pasta but with bread. We also tried fried mushrooms and onion rings and were not impressed with either. The wine selection was not great but clearly people who regularly come here are not that picky about that. They do have lots of pizza! So that's probably the main attraction. read more
