After a long Sunday afternoon and evening in Chicago, my family and I wanted dinner on our way back to Wisconsin. None of my bookmarks that were open sounded appealing, and my wife said she was in the mood for pizza, so I did a search for open pizza places close to our route home. Half And Half Pizza looked good and wasn't too far out of the way, so we stopped there. Our order consisted of garlic bread, a half cheese/half pepperoni pizza, and the White As Snow pizza. Garlic bread isn't on their recently revamped menu, but they were willing to make it for us after the breadsticks we saw on their online menu weren't available. I didn't partake cause I wanted to make the sure the kids had enough, but it looked good. The cheese and pepperoni pizza was good. I thought the pepperoni had a light amount of heat in the small bite I tried, but my wife didn't mention it so I may be mistaken. The crust wasn't as charred as a pizza we saw served at another table, so the kids ate it without complains. I enjoyed the White As Snow pizza. There was a good balance between garlic and cheese and I appreciate that there was enough ricotta dolloped on top to spread evenly over the pizza. I went with thin crust and wasn't disappointed in its crispiness. The prices are higher than I'd prefer, but the cute area it's located in looks bougie, so not out of place given the local competition. I don't think I'd stop back with my family because the kids won't eat char on pizza crust and I think we got lucky with the pizza they ate, but I would possibly stop back to get the White As Snow pizza again.

This pizza grocery store concept just opened up in Lake Bluff this week. They have a large variety of wine to choose from and a cooler full of beer that you can walk up and choose. My mom and I ordered wine that was very reasonably priced for the area. They forgot that we ordered our drinks and when we reminded them, they apologized and comped all of our drinks. We ordered the Winner and In a tent pizzas. The pizza was great and was made with quality ingredients. The made one of the pizzas wrong so they comped that as well and gave it to us at the end to take home as well which we thought was very nice. We also ordered the beets and meatballs for an appetizer. The place itself gives grab and go wine and beer store that also serves food vibes. They have indoor and outdoor seating which was awesome. The manager said it was the 1st weekend that they were open so they were working out all the kinks and took care of us for all of their missteps. I think this place has a lot of potential because the prices were great, food was good, and the staff was accommodating and helpful. We will be back and we hope that they figure everything out so that they thrive because the location to the downtown is great!

we tried half and half pizza this week and had take out of two types: dad's and marguerita my way. 14" size left us plenty of slices for the next day. also checked out their wines, and even though i mourned foxtrot closing...and now selective locations reopening...yay! i have a new wine shop that is close by. a really great wine selection--i drove home with two: a sauvignon blanc and a cab sav. the pizzas were ready for me when i arrived and the layout is clean and bright. cold wines/beer are also available to go. both of our pizzas were thin crust and cooked perfectly; the sauvignon blanc was terrific and the service was great! v good addition to the yummy pizza places we've tried and we will be back.

First time trying Half & Half - it did not disappoint! The pizza crust is light and buttery. Toppings are creative and delicious. The staff's recommendations were spot on.

I have organized eighteen large-scale events at other venues and have never had to deal with the lack of hospitality by an owner like I did at this place. While our families put together a beautiful and memorable event, it was not without a ridiculous amount of stress from the unaccommodating owners. The zero-tolerance policy of outside alcohol was handwritten like a note on the contract after it was already signed. The conversation about outside alcohol was casual and a story about a previous wedding where a keg was brought into the Groom's suite. Had we been told that their liquor license was in jeopardy instead of being disrespectfully yelled at, we could have resolved the issue professionally. The fact that the owners rummaged through personal items, confiscated gifts without our knowledge, constantly monitored every move via the surveillance cameras (there is no sign anywhere that you are being watched/recorded), spoke to us in a very rude manner, basically called us liars several times, and much more, made me regret the decision to have the wedding at the barn. What owner would say to the bride, "I bet you can't wait till this is over"? Or roll his eyes and say, "oh, god" at the decor we were bringing in? I am disgusted that the surveillance camera in the Groom's suite watched their every move. I wonder if the barn follows the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. I question the adequate exit access and compliant fire alarm system. I also question their compliance with the ADA Standards for Accessible Design (no designated accessible parking spaces). These are all serious matters that deserve attention. If you prioritize hospitality and integrity in your event planning, look for an alternative venue.

We started out with some bread, butter, and cheese. The bread was fresh, the butter was soft and salty, and the cheese selection was varied and high quality. Our waiter was likely quite new, as he struggled with many of our questions. A couple of items were forgotten upon our original order, and we had to ask a few times about missing items. This was unfortunately frustrating and took away some from our enjoyment of the meal. The food was hit or miss! While the pork belly, market fish, and fries were fantastic, the burger was terribly under-seasoned/over-grilled, the shrimp was a bit fishy and chewy, and the giardiniera lacked any spice. We also found the vibes a bit strange. While the lights were low and the interior had an intimate date-night feel, there were also multiple TVs on playing football games which gave it a sports bar feel. I'd be curious to come again on a Thursday-Sunday evening to see how things might be different!

Mother Rudd was a mother of 13 children, yet still was able to care for others, including people in her community. The house was amazing with great artifacts and memories that go back two centuries. The hosts were friendly and gave a lot of information about what the Mother Rudd house was used for, and what the Gurnee community was like long ago.Several families donated artifacts from their family history to help one understand legacies of Lake County history. I had to add 2 whole pounds of cut up carrots, four cups of broth, a TB of brown sugar, and a can of unsweetened coconut milk. It went on the stovetop and an hour later (with an assist from my immersion blender) it was ready. It yielded 8 servings and was pretty good. Today I cooked up my second batch of their soup -this one had the tongue twisting name of "Nebraska Barn Raising Split Pea". I had to add 6 cups of broth and I swapped out some diced chicken from the freezer instead of the bacon they suggested. This time I made it in a crockpot instead of on the stovetop. You can either cook it on low for 4-5 hours or on high for 8 hours. I put it on low in the morning and by the time lunch rolled around at 1:00 i checked it and it was perfect. I was super happy with the way it came out and after it cools down I'll package it into some containers for refrigerating and freezing.
