Ordered takeout for the first time and overall it was a smooth experience. It took about 20-30 minutes, which was reasonable, and there were no issues with parking or paying when I arrived. We ordered the Margherita pan pizza and the thin mac and cheese bacon pizza. The Margherita was my favorite. I thought I had ordered it thin crust, but it came as pan instead. The crust was a bit thick, but honestly one slice was very filling. For two people, it felt like a lot of bread -- but the toppings were really good and everything tasted fresh. You could tell the ingredients were high quality. The mac and cheese bacon pizza was good too, but you definitely have to like both mac and cheese and bacon to fully enjoy it. I personally liked it better without the bacon, but it's still a must-try if you're into unique pizza combinations. Overall, solid first takeout experience and I'd definitely order again. read more

MEH I recently visited The Silo in Lake Bluff for dinner with clients; the staff are friendly and welcoming and the interior features old wooden beams, cement floors, and the like, suggestive of an old barn or farm outbuilding renovated and repurposed as a restaurant. It is very dark inside, even in the afternoon. My clients, before making our dinner arrangements, had told me they had heard good things about The Silo; upon reading various reviews posted online I had my doubts but since they were my clients, I did not say anything. Perhaps I should have done so. Although I arrived early, the noise inside was tremendous; there is nothing to absorb the chatter and it was very hard to hear my clients speaking, despite being at the same table. The table was clean...sort of. It had been wiped with a wet rag, and the surface was sticky and unpleasant; a good scrubbing with Murphy's Wood Soap would have made a tremendous improvement. Our server was pleasant and friendly; I do not recall his name. He was very young. I ordered a diet soda which came reasonably quickly; however, it was more syrup than fizz and I did not care for it. For $4 a well-mixed soda should not be an issue. My clients and I ordered a standard deep-dish pizza (I don't remember the toppings) which arrived in about thirty minutes or thereabouts. Well. The crust was delicious: hot and steaming fresh, with a wonderful flavour. The toppings were cold. I don't know how you order a pizza pie baked to order with a hot crust and cold toppings. Perhaps the crust was baked first and the toppings heaped on before servine. I don't know. The tomatoes were bitter and spoiled the flavour of the toppings. The meat was burnt and tasted bland, as though it had been reheated several times. I honestly can't tell you what the toppings were; they had no flavour and as I've mentioned, the tomatoes were bitter. Overall, The Silo features good staff, and that's about all. I kept the order simple and went with a pepperoni deep dish. It was great! Sauce had good flavor and wasn't overly spicy, while the crust had just the right amount of crunch with a buttery flavor. It wasn't heavy on salt either. They made everything how we ordered it. The employees even provided us with plastic ware and plates to go. The front desk highly recommend this place. We were so happy that she did because this was one of the best places to eat while out there. We actually visited this establishment twice within the week. First time in IL and wanted to try the famous Chicago style deep dish. It was thick with a golden crust that's sturdy without feeling like a bread wall. The mix of sliced meatballs, sausage, pepperoni, and bacon hits with smoky, savory heat, layered into molten cheese with tangy tomato sauce and large chunks of rich tomatoes. I was so looking forward to having Silo pan pizza on my return to the Lake Bluff area. I ordered carry-out, but I was close by so the pizza was still hot when I opened the box. As soon as I opened the box, my heart sank. It did not look like I remembered. Black/burnt sausage was lying on top. Just a few scattered tomatoes, no sauce whatsoever. Not much cheese either. And the biggest disappointment was the crust. The bottom was soft and the edges were not crispy. The pizza was really dry. Not what I remembered at all. Went for lunch yesterday and loved the decor. The hostess was friendly and our waitress, Julisa, was very good. My rating for the Ambiance and service would be 5 stars. While we sat inside there was a very nice outside dining area. The menu had a nice variety of items to order. We asked about the pork tenderloin sandwich and were told it was one of the more popular choices. Looking at other food being served around us (pizza, burgers and salads), we clearly ordered the wrong item. It could have been an off day for the chef in preparing our sandwiches, but if not, this item should not be on the menu. The pork cut was ridiculously thin, dry and way overcooked. The meat to bun ratio was way off. Zero flavor. Both of us first removed the outside sides of the pork as they were like jerky. Without a doubt, the worst pork tenderloin sandwich either of us have had. We may return to try something else. read more

Absolutely my favorite pizza of all time I've been coming to The Silo for years, and nothing beats their pan pizza. The crust is truly something special--great flavor, perfectly chewy, and honestly feels like a mini breadstick with every slice. My go-tos are the Crazy Chicken and the Meat Lovers. I still miss the old California Chicken pizza (bring it back!!), but the Crazy Chicken is a solid substitute. And yes... I also miss the $3 coupon. It wasn't a huge discount, but with the price of a large pan pizza, it was a nice little perk. I've been told the baked potatoes and salads are excellent too, but I'm loyal to the pan pizza life. Family friendly pizza joint with hearty portions and good vibes. Great for large groups with plenty of seating even upstairs. We tried the infamous seafood specialty pizza and it did not disappoint. It kind of tasted like I was having a clam chowder soup out of a bread bowl (given the white sauce). I thought it was seasoned perfectly (not too salty) and enjoyed it because I've never had seafood on pizza before! The country Italia speciality pizza, however, was a bit too intense/salty for our taste buds but that was solved with mouthfuls of salad. I would skip if you're looking for something lighter. Attitude attitude. They are always running late with carryout orders. Rarely apologetic. I know to come at least 20 minutes after the time I am told and often still not ready. First visit to Silo's was one week ago. My husband has visited this restaurant for a couple of years while on business trips to the area and this was my first time. We ordered a 14 in Taco Pizza with thin crust ($24.99) to share and it was really really good. Not many restaurants make a taco pizza and if they do, it's not nearly as tasty as this one. Deep Dish is the specialty in this area but the thin crust on this pizza was perfect. Our server (Kylie) was friendly, very personable and just awesome. The restaurant is really a great environment. There are model trains close to the ceiling, Pennie's make up the floor in the men's restroom. The dining room is quite large and there is a nice bar area. We saw several people picking up take out as we were coming in and leaving the restaurant. Out of our whole week visiting the area, this is one of my two most favorite restaurants to experience. read more

Came here for dinner on Sunday since we were in the area. It was getting busy as we entered and it seems like this place is a popular dinner spot. Personally I didn't think this place was anything special. We ordered the pick 3 appetizer platter (onion rings, pickle chips, and fries), garlic bread, a pan crust pizza, and a thin crust pizza. Our waitress was very nice but she was definitely stretched in a lot of directions. It took a while to get waters and we got the wrong appetizers twice so when we finally ended up getting the correct appetizer, it was about 10 minutes before our pizza arrived. The garlic bread and onion rings were good but but the pickle chips and fries were just okay. I didn't love either pizza that much but they were fine. All in all, our experience was mediocre. I haven't been to The Silo Restaurant in years so last night we headed over. The Silo has a large outdoor seating area so we chose to enjoy the nice weather and sit outside. It was a nice experience. They pipe music into the area and it was loud enough to hear but not make conversation difficult. Our server was friendly and attentive. The menu had something for everyone. In fact I was having trouble deciding if I wanted a pizza or something else. I asked our waiter what he recommends and he said pizza or a sandwich so I chose the pork tenderloin sandwich which was billed in the menu as being a food critic favorite. My husband selected a cup of chicken dumpling soup and Mac and cheese for his main course. I had a taste of his soup which was good. His Mac and cheese also looked good and was served with two slices of garlic bread. My sandwich was impressive looking with a large tenderloin topped with onion and pickles on a soft bun. Unfortunately I think the food critic had a different chef make his sandwich. The sandwich and fries were room temperature and really the only flavor came from the pickles. It didn't make for a great meal. My husband said his meal was warm as he'd expected. Overall, we'll likely return to try the pizza but if we want a sandwich and fries will go somewhere else. read more

My husband and I ordered take out. My order was for a taco salad with chicken. It was supposed to include grilled chicken on tossed salad greens with cheddar cheese, tomatoes and with homemade salsa ranch dressing. It was to be served in a taco shell with guacamole. What I actually got was a tossed club salad with grilled chicken, cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, carrots and cheddar cheese. I got no salad dressing. The taco shell was so extra crispy it wasn't edible. The side of quacamole was terrific though! What I think happened is whoever prepared the salad didn't realize it was supposed to be a taco salad until the last minute and just improvised to get it out the door. What a rip off for $16.99! It is always the same - no one ever tried to "improve" on the original recipe, and there is no reason to. Servers are attentive and helpful. They come around just often enough to help, but not so often that they are annoying. If you have never tried their deep pan (we like cheese and sausage), please do try it. Came here on a recommendation from the hotel we were staying at. They did not disappoint. The ambience was amazing. The food was great and they rocked their customer service. Drove by the Silo and have always wanted to give them a try. Stopped in for a late lunch. The server was very pleasant and spread thin, as he was the bartender and the only server in the dining room. The food came out fast. Hubby & I both ordered the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich. Although, one sandwich would have been enough to feed us both, it was large. Do not recommend, it was so dry, the ends were burnt and hard, not much flavor as well. Fries were also overcooked and hard. I used to love crust but now it's has no flavor and tastes processed, they definitely don't do any fermentation to the crust.
