I'm giving them what I think is a neutral rating. This is for a couple of reasons - mostly because there were good and not-so-good parts of my experience and I think they balance out to "average." First, I ensured they were open for business - they were. I called the location up on Tatum because that was on the way to the birthday party for which I needed the cake. I called three times - three different days and times. Three times I listened to that kitschy, annoying, overdone Italian accent on the recording give me my options. Three times I selected the option to talk to a person. Three times I was hung up on. Now, to be honest, if I had found another place that was as conveniently located for me that had a cannoli cake that I could have gotten for this woman who truly has everything - I would have called once and that would have been it. So, I decided to contact them through the website because it says: "Please fill out the form below and we will get back to you soon!" and allows for several reasons for your contact. I emailed twice. No response. At this point, I was about done - because it was clear they did not want my business that badly. My wife suggested calling the location in Chandler - while not on our way to the birthday party, it was a short, not totally unreasonable jog out of our way. The gal who answered the phone was friendly, helpful and double checked all of the information to make sure the cake was perfect. I did think it was weird that they charged me for the cake the second I ordered it rather than at pick up, but I get it - custom order and all. So, my opinion of this place changed significantly simply because of our interaction with her in ordering the cake. Pick up was great - the staff were friendly and outgoing and we got educated on the difference between gelato (theirs was amazing, by the way) and ice cream and staff made some great suggestions. The cake was nice enough, but for $48+ (it was a little more than advertised due to having a birthday wish written on it), I expect perfection and it wasn't. The taste was good. But, the overall buttercream layer was not thick enough (you could see the underlying cake in some areas); there were 3 different spots around the cake where there was clearly a fingerprint in it down to the cake - I wasn't even mad about that, you have to finagle a delicate cake into a box, there may be some collateral damage, I get it; and, finally, the box was not sturdy enough and folded in on itself, into the cake, taking a chunk out of the cake and smearing the other side of the cake when I straightened the box to remove the cake. So, overall, at this point, I'm not sold, but I'm also not vehemently opposed to going back and giving them a second chance (at the Chandler location, the Scottsdale one will never be off my "no go" list due to my initial experiences). read more

I really dropped the ball and didn't get any pictures but that's because I was too busy enjoying their desserts. We tried the sfogliatelle and pistachio cannoli. They have at least 10 different cannoli fillings. I tried several and was impressed by all of them. My wife wanted to try the sfogliatelle and it was my first time trying. Wow. Absolutely . Super crispy pastry dough due to the layered texture. The ricotta filling was subtle, slightly sweet and aromatic with citrus. Beautiful. I will be back! read more

I love the concept of the Sicilian Baker..... Build your own cannoli.... They have a ton of different cannoli filling flavors to choose from and then different shell sizes and flavors as well.... But I didn't think the cannoli itself was all that special. Stopped in earlier today and I was a bit disappointed. I got a sfogliatelle pastry and a Nutella lobster. My boyfriend said the lobster was very good and flaky but my sfogliatelle was cold and dry on the inside. The sfogliatelle was flaky on the outside and the ricotta filling was very good. I just wasn't expecting cold pastries is all. I think since they open later in the day, maybe they bake the pastries the night before or morning of and refrigerate them? Either way, I would give this bakery another shot since it's very hard to find sfogliatelle!! read more

We were in Chicago a few months ago and experienced one of the best cannoli cakes at Rosebuds. We decided that we would order this cake for my birthday. We went to The Silician Baker and discussed the cake in person with the baker. The way he described it made my mouth water. I was so excited to try their cake. Well, the big day arrived and I was soooo disappointed. The cake was dry, no flavor and the buttercream wasn't even sweet. It was a huge let down. Save your $100 and go somewhere else. The people behind the counter were flustered wondering how she entered because they were not open yet. But they asked her how they could help. They were so kind to go out of their way to fill the order of St. Joseph cakes that she wanted. They could have told her to come back when they opened but they didn't. This place is incredible! I took a box of cookies over to a girlfriend's house last night and am enjoying some of the leftovers with coffee this morning. The Amaretti is my favorite, but also really enjoyed the almond cookies and mini cannoli. So. Good. Sicilian Butcher next door is also delicious - we loved their beet salad, charcuterie, and pizza. *Update added to the end of this original post* Original post, 2 stars: I was pretty excited to try the cannoli bar, seems like such an original idea with so many interesting flavors! They even let you sample the creams on a little spoon. I was very excited to try most of them so I ordered a 6-pack of minis and was given all regular. I said I wanted an assortment of the flavors but they said you can't get flavors in the mini size. Uh... what?? The website says "Choose your size, choose your shell, choose your cream". Well, I chose mini only to be denied. And so did the people in line beside me. A foot-long cannoli is a novelty, but I think they are missing out on a huge opportunity here. Hey Sicilian: People would be very keen to take a dozen assorted minis to the office. Perhaps if they are too difficult to fill on the fly, you could offer premade half dozen assortment boxes. The original cream minis you gave me were premade as it is, why not go ahead and pre-make a few with your most popular fillings. When you figure this out let me know and I'll be back. Update: the manager reached out and let me know that they could fill the minis for me and invited me back to try them. So I did. And they are DELICIOUS! The shell was perfectly (lightly) sweet and crispy. The fillings are interesting and fun, that's what drew me to them in the first place. I thought my preference would be the original, chocolate, nut flavors... and they were, but I didn't think I would like the fruity flavors. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the lemon flavor! Like an Italian lemon meringue pie. I took some home and unfortunately they don't keep well. The shells lose the crispness. These treats are meant to be enjoyed right away. Delicious cannolis! I stopped in a few days ago to pick up some cannolis and was amazed by the variety of flavors available. I got a 6 pack of minis to take home for my family to try. We tried the regular, strawberry, lemon, and chocolate. All of them were delicious! I will definitely try some of the other desserts as they all looked amazing! Gooooood lord their cannolis are delicious! We sampled each cannoli cream flavor and each one was out of this world. We settled on the cookie butter and the original. After eating the cannoli we cracked into our box of goodies we were supposed to bring home. All amazing but the Italian rainbow cookie took the cake haha!! I love the look of the store front and the bakery case. Unfortunately, I won't be able to review any food because I was told there is no guarantee there are no peanuts in anything and I have a severe allergy. I'm rating this place 2 stars for now and possibly changing the score in a few days. Let me explain why. Did a girls night out, 5 of us hit up Sicilian Butcher and 3 of us hit up this place afterwards. The 3 of us that went to the bakery each got cannoli donuts and traditional cannolis to and share at home with our partners. One friend messaged me the next day and said she had food poisoning shortly after eating the cannoli donut her husband didn't want. The other friend told me she had a bite of her husbands cannoli donut and ended up slightly sick but not to the extent of our other friend. She also stated because it was late her husband never had any. Then there's me. I split one with my boyfriend before getting the warning texts and my stomach would not stop rumbling for hours. We know it's not from the butcher next door since the 2 that didn't join us for dessert were fine. My boyfriend ended up saying the same thing, it did not sit well with his stomach. I honestly don't know if I would ever go back here and because it's attached to the butcher shop I'm guessing they are the same company. Not sure if I ever want to go back there anymore more. It's just if you have one half of your business giving 4 people eating the same thing food poisoning, makes you wonder about cleanliness or standards of the place associated with it too. I don't like giving bad reviews and feel terrible about it. But honestly it needs to be noted because something was done wrong that lead to this and the issue needs to be found and fixed. Maybe it's a temperature control issue with where they kept them? Maybe they were old over a certain time? I really don't know but I feel they should track down the cause and fix it. read more

I saw this place in my neighborhood and couldn't resist stopping by on my way home from work. Their build your own cannoli bar is awesome! Both times I've been there, the service was super quick and I was in and out with my cannoli in a few minutes. They have some tables inside and outside if you want to eat there. They have a bunch of pastries on display, but I'm a sucker for cannolis so I honestly haven't paid much attention to what they have in the cases. Try the cookie butter cannoli filling.....you won't be disappointed! I've also tried the Nutella filling and that was great too. I had gotten a napoleon there after they just opened and was VERY excited to find a good one in the valley. Went back today to treat myself again and was extremely disappointed in that the pastry was extremely soggy and the custard looked old. It tasted like it was made the same day as the first one I had when they opened. Very soggy pastry am so disappointed 4/22 Update. The owner took my review to heart and reached out immediately and sent me a $25 gift card to come back and try again. I was amazed at such responsiveness so will definitely come back and try their napoleons again and hopefully it was just a one off issue. read more

Oh my goodness! These cannolis are amazingly delicious!!! First you choose your cannoli shell, then you get to choose your cream filling, and then you get to sink your teeth into the most amazing cannoli you've ever had (outside of Italy). I had a chocolate shell filled with the traditional cannoli cream with chocolate chips. I was so full after having eaten next door at the Sicilian Butcher, that I ended up taking it home and putting it in the fridge until later that evening. I was afraid that the shell would be soggy. But surprisingly, the shell was still crispy and crunchy and paired very nicely with the creamy filling. The chocolate on the shell really made it DELICIOUS! We also tried the amaretti cookies, my favorite Italian cookie. Was NOT disappointed. Crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside, not overly sweet and just the right amount of almond flavoring. Checked this place out today. It was busy and because of that, the ordering environment was a little hectic and rushed. I thought the staff seemed friendly though. They don't have their cannoli bar prices listed on the wall, so you have to look for them - it's a small piece of paper near the register that is often blocked by people so it's hard to see. Also be aware they charge extra for different kinds of cannoli shells and extra for sprinkles, etc on the ends (that normally just come on any cannoli I've ever had in my life). $2 for mini cannoli, $4 for regular, $6 for the large. They also have 6 and 12 packs. 50cents extra for topping the ends; 50cents extra for the dipped shells. They offer it to you without letting you know it's extra - so that's kind of annoying because you get to the register and you're in for a surprise - it adds up quick. The cannoli creams are setup like a gelato bar. They should put flavor cards on them so you know what's there instead of having to guess or ask about each one. This place is new, so maybe they are still working out the kinks. The cannolis are good - the creams are flavorful and tasty. The cannoli shells are also good, although not necessarily as sweet or flavorful as I've had before. But, still good and I'd eat them again. The torta della nonna is fantastic. $5. I'd get that again all day long - it's one of my favorites and they do it right at this place. All in all, this place is good and seems authentic. If you go in there, expect to spend some money - at $4-6 each item, it adds up fast. A good treat though. read more
