Out here again because my kiddo is still in the hospital and this is the closest place for an escape from the ICU. We went here for lunch and a break . Atmosphere is fairly typical of a local pub. What I did like was that there wasn't VLT machines in the joint. Food is again fairly typical of a British pub. This time my husband and I chose the the fish and chips which were the special and my friend chose the bangers and mash. Our server was excellent. Helpful, friendly, and quick. Food in general was good. However, the choice of fish they used definately was not great. It was dry and bland. The batter on the fish was delish and the fries cooked well. I would not order this fish again. The quality was not good, same with my last dish. I wish they would not skimp on food. I probably choose Earls next time that is close, although price point is higher. Atmosphere and service is excellent. Food could use some improvement. read more

Visited The Sherlock Holmes Pub for lunch on a Thursday. The restaurant was not busy. I was not impressed for the following reasons: - Expensive.. I ordered the Thursday Lunch Special. As I am writing this review I thought it was $17.00 but I must be incorrect because my total was $28.00 that included a 10 percent tip. Fish (2 pieces), Chips & Small Coleslaw, and a pop. It was ok but there was no wow factor. - The service was not great... had to ask for silverware... pop was not refilled often. The server was extremely nice but the restaurant was understaffed. - It is not the server's fault but management for understaffing. A reservation was made so they knew that the group was coming. Will not be returning as too expensive for what I received. I believe that I was overcharged? The Sherlock Holmes University location does not have an email to contact management. This pub is a busy place, and it's a great environment to be in to wind down. I ordered the Frank's Red Hot and the Lemon Pepper wings with a blue ranch dip ($15+), and the dip was the best part of the meal. The wings were extremely dry, as if they had been cooked before, then reheated. The flavour was unbearingly strong. Each bite was extremely salty. However, the poutine, the burgers, and the chicken strips that other people ordered seemed to fit their liking. I am a little disappointed with my choice, since it seemed like pubs would push out decent wings. I might be back for drinks only next time. read more

A typical bar with the usual pub options, but it's location right across the street from the hospital makes it the perfect place to escape for a couple hours or a meal. They have the usual comfort food options from burger to fried items to pies. I had the feature of the day, which was a pulled pork sandwich with broccoli slaw and a side of their daily soup. The soup was way too salty for my liking so it didn't get eaten. The pulled pork sandwich was much better in comparison. There were large chunks of pulled pork that was tender and well seasoned (without relying on heavy saucing). Great service and relaxed vibe. One question, why is it called Sherlock Holmes Pub? Drinks were good. The waitresses are ALWAYS amazing-- they're so attentive and kind. But the comedy guy heckled us before his set even started, so our party took off before ordering food or more drinks. We could tell his set was going to be terrible, so no point staying. read more

The table beside us had pizza and it looked and smelled delicious. Hubby went for his standard Shepherds Pie. Ground beef with peas and corn. Lots of real mashed potatoes covering it. He declared it good. But how can you mess up shepherds pie! I had the vegan carrot soup. Oh my. Rich and creamy with a hint of spice. Normally when something says vegan, I turn my nose up. Glad I stepped outside my comfort zone. I was quite surprised at the depth of flavour in the soup. This is our second visit before a show at the jubilee. Poor Sherlock's, so little love! A bit unjustified in my mind, and while it's true that this location is not 4-star status, I personally would give it a 3.5. As others note, it IS stupidly loud during open mic night, but tbh I could name about any pub in the Sherlock family (and other smaller YEG pubs) and this observation would be true. In my many post-shift pint visits, I can't say I've had a bad experience. The daily deals are good, the beer selection is much better than many other local chains (glares at Boston Pizza), and most of the food is pretty good, for a unpretentious local pub atmosphere. The pizza here and other locations is a bit greasy and heavy for my taste, but most other things are A-Ok. I like that they change up their menu a little on a regular basis; my bf had the firecracker burger our last visit, and it was a perfect spicy treat. I've also had no problem with service, and if you have Kaylee as your server, you'll undoubtedly be greeted with a warm smile and a friendly attentiveness. This is very conveniently located by the UAlberta campus and has a good selection of beers and pub grub! I find that the prices are reasonable and the drink specials are great. The honeybunny bought a Groupon. An Oilers game gave us the perfect excuse to visit the Sherlock Holmes Pub (Campus). For those who haven't been here, it's a clean, well-lit, tidy place, spacious, with TVs mounted above head-level around the perimeter. Small, clean washrooms. The bunny chose to sit at the bar. Duncan, bartender (and manager, we find out later) took care of us with verve right from the beginning, starting with a long, complex order. He was right on refills, for us and for all the customers around us. We ordered a pizza, two plates of wings, and a burger. The Big Ben Burger was delicious! The ample bacon was tasty and crispy. The bun was well done. The meat had that char-broiled taste that makes everything all right. Copious condiments, including tasty pickles and firm tomatoes. The chicken wings were crunchy and flavorful - we had the lemon-salt and the "hotyaki" kinds. The pizza -- two different half-pizza flavors -- was underwhelming, mediocre at best. I mean, edible, but who wants to aim for "edible" as a rating? (The honey didn't think the pizza was edible; more for me :-) Whatever else, a full star off for charging us $1.50 for mayo. REALLY? You can't take an order for "how about some mayo" and not mention that you're going to charge. Isn't every customer enraged by unexpected charges on the bill? (The charge is especially frustrating since we frugally asked for only one sauce for our double-order of wings; technically we were owed a sauce. Cheap bastiches.) Extra-irritating, it turns out Duncan -- in his role as the manager -- pushed back heavily on use of a Groupon, calling the GM, because he couldn't figure out how to ring through a discount. After a long delay, the discount happened (as it should have as there's no language discounting its use), but it was a sour note to an otherwise grand evening (pizza notwithstanding). read more

To say our experience was bad is an understatement. We wanted to eat something before going to a performance at the jubilee. We walked in at 5:00pm. We were sat and were one of 4 tables. The waitress took our order around 5:10. We order a chicken Caesar salad, an order of wings and a chicken wrap. We waited over an hour and no food. By this point, more tables showed up, and it was busy. We asked the waitress how much longer for our food. As many tables who arrived after us, with much larger orders, were getting food before us. She told us she would check and said that there was only one chef back there. She asked us again what we ordered and came back ten minutes later ( now 6:15) and said the salad was up soon. We got the salad at 6:18 (at this point it was a game to see how long we waited). The wings came out at 6:26 and they were cold. The wrap came out at 6:42. We had to get it to go because the performance was at 7. Our drinks and food cost over $120. She gave us a discount of 20% and said, nothing more I can do, sorry about that, and walked away laughing. There was one other girl working who was dealing with others tables complaining about their food. She was very rude to them and said that she didn't see a problem with it, and laughed when then tried to explain. Over $100 spent on cold wings, a salad that was soggy, with pre cooked chicken, and a cold wrap and soggy fries. We believe that they forgot about our table. Safe to say, when you have a restaurant next to a popular place, be ready when you know there is a sold out show‍. Would recommend to reserve a table at earls. The service started off good but it progressively got slower and slower, which is understandable since it was peak bar time. But a few members of my party had to leave for a time sensitive engagement and the waitress took forever to bring us our bills, and then hunt down the debit machine, and then finally ring each of us through. Aside from that, it's a fairly decent place. The music is good and isn't blaring loudness that drowns out any conversations. The food was good, though it took a while to get out. The beer was flat for some of my companions, but they didn't overly mind. I have to say though that Sherlock Holmes pub had the BEST Caesar rimmer I have ever had in my life. It's wonderful! I hate traditional rims because it's usually just a nasty blend of salt. But this one was much, much more. There was salt and pepper and garlic and probably magic. I highly recommend you try it! Eeeek! Aesthetically and in terms of atmosphere, this place is fine (except when there is live music, then it is LOUD), but yikes is the service and food ever terrible. Also, there always seems to be a few fruit flies (not tons or anything)... I'm always a little grossed out by places that have fruit flies. The service here is always nightmarishly slow, the servers never seem to know any specials and seem annoyed when you ask what is on tap, it will never take less than 45 min to get your food, and nobody will ever come back to ask you how it is. The last time I was here I ordered the Shepherds Pie and it was INEDIBLY salty. Like, I actually took maybe 5 bites and gave up on it. Never did the server ask how it was and when I said I didn't want it packed up she didn't say anything or comp it off the bill. (I also didn't say anything, but was pretty disappointed in the service) (Yes, I gave them 2 stars despite the fact that I don't really like this place. Saturday evening and we just got out of the water park at West Edmonton Mall. we could not find a place to eat that wasn't an hour wait. My wife suggested we try Sherlock Holmes. I was a bit skeptical but it turned out to be the best food choice I've made in a while. the food was top notch, the service was amazing and the value was very good ad well. we now have a new Edmonton favourite... well done staff at Sherlock Holmes. read more

Came for a late night bite and went for the fish and chips...this is an English pub right? I was a bit underwhelmed to be honest, it was okay at best, nothing really special. The batter was super heavy and way too thick, it took too long to get through it. The meat of the fish was really great, it's too bad I had to work to get at it. The plate had a nice amount of fries and I couldn't eat them all, it might have been due to the batter I was crunching on. I will say though, the Tower of London burger that my buddy ordered looked amazing! The thing was frigging huge and looked amazing. If we come back tomorrow night, I may be ordering it in place of the poisson. read more

They skimped on the cheese pretty hard and from what I hear it's not uncommon either. The sever was pretty nice and she comped them because I complained respectfully. The campus site has good beer, fun events and the greatest staff that I have ever interacted with at a bar. The staff quickly knew my name and were incredibly friendly. A few friends and I went out and wanted to grab a beer and a good burger. We went to Sherlock Holmes Pub who right away accommodated our group with a table. I love the decor and its friendliness. There was live music that wasn't too loud and seemed appropriate for a pub. Service was great too! They were on top of everything, served us in a timely manner and came around when needed. The unfortunate part of the night was the food. We ordered a variety of appetizers and items from the menu. The first thing that surprised me was the variety of food that was offered. From stew to butter chicken to fried dill pickles to hamburgers. I love variety but as long as it is consistent with the goal/focus of the restaurant. In my opinion I would say a Pub should offer comfort foods/meals. I like burgers, I like the stew and the appies that were offered, but butter chicken amongst a few other dishes had me puzzled. Once we saw what was offered, our friends and myself decided to try a number of dishes because we were excited that there may have been a good chef in the kitchen. We ordered nachos, deep fried pickles, 2 different hamburgers, butter chicken, Irish stew along with some wings. Here is what we felt on each item that we ordered 1. Nachos - great portion but needed some extra cheese - good variety of peppers and everything else. 2. Deep fried pickles - great taste - just a few and a little too expensive for how many. 3. Hamburgers - Huge burgers with lots of fries. However, taste was not there and by the time we got to the fries, they were cold. Bun was good but the meat needed to be seasoned and could have used some mustard or a spiced mayo. 4. Butter Chicken - great portion, naan bread was ok, chicken was good and sauce could have been spiced a tad more. There was no bite to the sauce. 5. Irish Stew - great portion but very runny - not enough potatoes or anything to absorb the liquids. Biscuits were good but not hearty as you would expect with a stew. Wings - Had hot wings which had a good bite - I am leaning towards that they used Frank's sauce on the wings. Good portion! So in general - great portions - tame with the spices and lots of potential to make these dishes great. I would personally stick to comfort foods and would eliminate a few of the dishes such as the butter chicken. For beer and drinks - they have a great variety of domestic, import and craft beer. Great place to hang out with friends, but if you are going for the food you may want to consider another pub. read more

I feel like a 3 star rating is generous, but the location is so perfect - just across the street from the U of A hospital (right where you need a cozy pub). We've been there 3 days in a row - sometimes with friends/family. Its been okay overall - decent service and mediocre food. But today I had to leave because kids until 8pm- horrible idea. Letting a yelly drunk who thought he was banned sit down next to me before it was even 7:30pm - even worse idea. Stopped in for a "quick" dinner before a function at the Jube. Service was horribly slow. We sat down and waited. After 20 minutes, I finally went in search of a server. Finally, the bartender came over and took our drink order. Ordered some wings to start followed by the beef dip and fish and chips. Beef (without dip) and fish came out first then followed by the wings. I guess they're not to clear on what an appetizer is. Wings were really good as was the beef dip. Can't say we were too thrilled at the portion size of the fish and chips. Hubby ordered the 2 piece (for $18, I might add) and the fish was soooo small. We were invited to this pub to listen to The Rural Routes. They were excellent! The pub...was not! If you want a beer, you're okay. But if you want a paralyzer, forget it. The first one came curdled, sent it back. The second one wasn't much better. Switched to Long Island iced tea. Waitress asked if I wanted another one, sure, waited 15 min and had to go up to bar to reorder it. The waitress forgot! Not the smartest thing to admit when you rely on tips. Then there's the bathrooms. The floor in the guys can had puddles. And it stunk! I never went into the girls but apparently it only has two stalls and only one was in working order. The smell in the bathrooms were so bad that some customers who sat down at a table in front of them moved and we overheard them say that every time the door opened, they were hit with the smell. We got to the bar at 930 and it was 1130 when someone finally took in a mop. And as for food, we had nachos. Nothing spectacular. Can't really go too wrong with that. read more
