I was worried it would be obtrusive and somehow take away from the beauty of the custom window and view of the backyard, but it does not. In fact, my husband did not even notice it was there at first! The solar shade is attractive and keeps out the late afternoon sun while decreasing the temperature in the kitchen immensely. My experience has been extremely positive. Not because everything went perfectly, no we had our share of issues but the way they handled every issue was amazing. After a year we noticed a screeching sound and they inspected the shade, realized it was slightly misaligned, shipped a new one, installed it, boxed up the old one neatly and provided a shipping label for pickup. I was referred here because I wanted to get a quote on shades but the guy at the front desk, I think his name was Rudy, was very off-putting. When we walked in, he was very dismissive and unwelcoming. The 1st impression is a lasting impression, and that set the tone for me so I left and waited outside for my partner. When she came out, she told me she asked him if they sold motorized blinds for the exterior. His reply was, "interior or exterior?" She repeated exterior. He said no. As she proceeded to walk out, he referred her to Truitt and White, which is down the street. Truitt and White only sell windows, NOT window coverings. I'm almost certain he knew that already and based off his demeanor, I'm sure his purpose was to waste our time. I did read the negative reviews before going here but I like to form my own opinion, especially when I plan to spend money. Don't waste your time here. One of the negative reviews said that Hunter Douglas was an option. I'll check them out. read more

Top line message: High end product with high end pricing. Unfortunately my experience with customer service was poor. Details: Once I visited the show room and decided to move forward with Shade Store blinds, I had a really hard time working with my sales person as he didn't treat my requests very seriously. I had to email and call several times over the course of a week before getting a reply for scheduling my measuring appointment. Once that task was complete, I could not get an installation appointment for several weeks due to demand, no fault of theirs, but it does make this relatively simple home improvement take much longer than anticipated-- and advertised! Then, I get a call from my customer support rep suggesting my installation take place on Memorial Day, "That's a holiday, is your team working?" "Yes. And the schedule is clear!" .... four days later, "Turns out the installation team is not working on the holiday..." Yet another snafu. Too bad, because the blinds are great and the installation was easy! read more

Extremely disappointing experience overall. When I first started the process of working with Tiffany at The Shade Store in Berkeley, I had no idea I would still be struggling to get the job completed over 3 months later. She was initially somewhat responsive, but not to the degree that I would have hoped, given the high cost of their products/services. Nevertheless, I was very excited to get these custom shades and was willing to pay for what I hoped was the best quality. Since that initial hopefulness, I've experienced failures with delivery and installation dates, 1 shade with a hole in it, 2 incorrectly made valances, and over a half dozen unfulfilled promises (from The Shade Store customer service) to replace the items with defects. Excellent customer service during COVID. Had to make a reservation but Kristin offered to send me various samples to my home multiple times instead of me having to come back in. The installation crew was also very professional and efficient. They wore shoe covers in my home and took away all the packaging trash after installing the shade. My experience on the sales side wasn't terrific (slow responses to questions, supposedly final quote pricing not for the blinds we discussed but for "ones everyone prefers") so I suggest asking for Robin Everhart who gets great reviews. My installation was done by Lance Fore who I cannot recommend highly enough. He was pleasant and efficient and very helpful in the adjusting cords. Ask for him if you can! Here is what I wrote yesterday to Mariko my "sales and service rep" crickets so far. She wrote me checking in after all the trouble I've had, I would rate this business 0 stars if I could. The service was horrible for the amount of money paid. I would never recommend this to anyone I know, I will be leaving a highly detailed negative review of what I went through. I'm not impressed that you chose now to send me an email "checking in" after the project was basically done no thanks in part to your assistance or "service". There is such a disconnect from your offices to you installation service to your customer service. I was told that the installation drop dead date would not be met 1 week before the date, I got no warning from anyone not you or the corporate offices. They told me finally after arguing on the phone they would expedite it. The ordeal goes on and gets more and more absurd. I was sent a correction because the large shade was off by 1/4" on both sides, but I wasn't told this I just got some obscure email that said there was a reorder and I was sent a large package and then called for installation, I was confused and got no notice from installers or anyone about the "mistake". There are gaps and overlaps in the other window shades the measurements and installation turned out horribly, I just don't have time for this, I can't believe I paid almost 15k$ for this. I check online and it would been much cheaper for me to measure and install this myself. This is the single worst experience I've had with any thing I've paid this much for. Still waiting for the promised contact, outside of permanent spamming advertisements nothing from aforementioned!! read more

In 2020 I made the decision to replace the old shades in my office. I went to The Shade Store because I walk by their store on 4th Street regularly. A measurement was scheduled for November 13th (it was a Friday). Someone came by and and took the measurements, it was quick. After a couple of weeks I called and left a voicemail asking what was happening with my order. I got an email scheduling a measurement appointment. After some back and forth it turned out that the measurement information hadn't been entered and was now lost. A new measurement appointment was scheduled and the order was placed and paid for the beginning of January. The order was for a grass fabric shade with a translucent liner to let in light. There was a slight delay because the material was on back order. Finally the shades were delivered and the installer scheduled for Thursday (Feb 18) afternoon at 3PM. I work at home so I could multitask a webinar and work in the morning, and then get dressed and move furniture, lamps, etc. blocking access to the window at lunch. At 9:30 the door bell rang. Since it had already taken longer than desired I left the webinar and rearranged the office as needed. Installation was quick. After the installer left I was looking at the shades and thinking they weren't correct. The lining was a blackout fabric making the room a dark cave. More back and forth and it turns out that the fabric can't be lined with the selected liner. Okay no liner is fine. Fabric is back ordered until April 30th. Then I did my research, probably better options out there for shades. I look forward to the day when I no longer have to deal with these people. read more

We ordered our shades and have had nothing but problems since. First the order was supposedly delayed because a problem with the material. Then it was back on and scheduled to be shipped. Then they called to schedule installation. Yeah! I take off work and wait 3 hours, at the last minute the installer shows up and says: "Do you have the blinds?" I'm like, "No, you're the installer, don't you have them?" Apparently, they were supposed to be shipped to our house. I got a tracking number, but the shipment location was Los Altos. The store and my house are in Berkeley. I figured they were sending me the shipment number to confirm they arrived at their warehouse, and were now there locally. No one communicated anything about expecting a shipment of the blinds to our house. No one said anything. They certainly didn't waste any time charging the FULL amount to my credit card. That happened immediately. Now, a month later . . . I rest my case. I don't know what's going to happen now. 8/6/18 P.S. We received notice that our order is back-ordered to 8/13 at which time the shades will be made. Expect a week more for production, another week for shipping, and who knows how long a wait for installation. September? Started in May. White blinds. Doesn't seem that unique. read more

I've been trying to give my money to these people for 10 weeks. They've been to my house three times to take measurements and each time they failed to do it correctly. Thus, I have not been able to complete my order. I am trying to purchase shades for my entire house. You would think that they would show some interest in completing this order, but there is absolutely no follow-up from their end. Furthermore if they cannot accurately complete a measurement for Shades one must wonder exactly how well they would install them in the end. read more

Finishing up a year long re-model and it was time to get real live window coverings; the Home Depot cheap blinds were not going to cut it anymore. Brandon at the Shade Store was extremely helpful and suggested getting the first step out of the way and making an appointment to have the windows measured - with that done we could take our time choosing different styles and fabrics... which was extremely wise as the measurement appointment took maybe 30 minutes, but with the Shade Store's enormous selection of window treatment styles and fabrics... yeah that took much longer. But Brandon and his team were so very helpful in suggesting what fabrics looked better with our window types and ever though it took a couple of weeks to finalize our choices, they were ever helpful even as my wife and I went back and forth trying to decide what we wanted. I can't tell you how many times we've had to follow up with her via call or email even after being very specific with what we need - writing everything down. We worked with Kristin Argue this past winter to get shades for our entire house. We went in and had a fun consultation, and then went through the process of ordering our shades (all of which was timely and painless). The installation was also easy and our service guy finished faster than quoted. When one of the shades ended up not working for us (blackout shades mounted outside leaked too much light) she worked to get it remade and reinstalled for free. I can't tell you how much her help, and kindness meant to us. We love our shades! The only reason I don't give this a 5-star review is we opted to get a child safety feature for the pull cords which after months of living with them are more trouble than they are worth. The magnets are not strong enough and we are constantly dealing with them coming apart and making opening/closing challenging. Even with this though I HIGHLY recommend The Shade Store and especially Kristin. She's awesome! read more
