From the minute I walked into Carol's home/sewing studio, I knew that she was going to be able to save my dress. Why? Because I quickly learned that she had the three qualities essential for a good tailor: experience (an M.A. in Costume Design and 30+ years of alterations), creativity, and the ability to listen. Believe me, that last quality is extremely important in a tailor. I learned the hard way. Carol warmly listened to my wishes, concerns, and even amateur alteration ideas, before thoughtfully and gently examining the dress, and brainstorming ways to fix it. She is very creative. I like to sew and tailor my own clothes so I appreciate that she listened to my ideas, even if they weren't necessarily good, or economical. Lastly, Carol has experience working with antique garments, which in my case was extremely beneficial. Not everyone understands or appreciates Edwardian era clothing. Carol respected the history of the dress, while also making a couple of alterations to make it more contemporary. One of the alterations she did was to take in the sleeves. At the time, I kept asking her to take them in more, but in retrospect she was absolutely right in stopping where she did. If she'd taken them in like I originally asked I probably wouldn't have been able to lift my arms! Not to mention that she was working with a 100 year old dress, which, while not fragile, could have ripped when I was dancing. The other tailor wouldn't even take in the sleeves, and then Carol went and took them in! She also gave me a lot of pep talks. And good advice on the proper undergarments to wear under the dress. And tips on what to do if I broke out in a sweat (hello pit stains!). Lastly, her sewing studio is very clean. She even laid a sheet on the carpet for me to walk on, just in case I picked up fluff from a black garment she had been working on. And she hand ironed my dress!!! It was so smooth that even though I had to transport my dress from Los Angeles to Cape Cod, where I got married, it stayed wrinkle free and I didn't even bother to try to get it ironed before my wedding day. Before shipping the dress to her, I sent a couple photos so she could see the exact problem. She was confident she would make the zipper fit properly. She was honest but toed what I'm sure can be an uncomfortable line with clients when they want an item but it just isn't for them. In the process she was able to start identifying gaps in my wardrobe (she was astonished I didn't have a single plain T-shirt - perfect for layering under fun accessories I can switch out every season or two) and spotting trends to understand my personal style (I flock to unique or embellished tops). I felt good wearing everything that was left in closet. It was a freeing experience. The Shopping Trip: Amy and I did a full day of shopping and in that time I was amazed at how quickly she found items that fit my body and matched my personal style. Instead of trying on a half dozen pants and ending the day exhausted I was exhilarated. Throughout the process we discussed multiple ideas for wearing each piece using clothes we had purchased or which were in my closet. I contacted her again weeks later, and by then my coupon was about to expire, so I left her a voicemail AND sent her an email too. No response and no call back again. Fast forward a bit, coupon expires. I contact Arteresa again, finally I get a response asking if she could call me the next day. I respond that she can call any time. She never calls, nor does she respond to my email. I forward my email to her, asking her to call me again. No response, no phone call. I forward my chain of unanswered emails and tell her that it seems that she is too busy to honor my Lifebooker, so I will just contact the company for a refund. She finally responds and tells me that there was a death in her family the week before and that is why she could not call. Unfortunately at this point I have been trying to chase her down for over 3 weeks, but I responded to say that I was sorry to hear and asked her to call once she has dealt with what she needed to deal with. 10 days later (!!!) Arteresa responds that since my Lifebooker has now expired, " unfortunately she won't be able to extend the deal but she can offer me a discount on the closet cleanse. Her usual rate is $75 an hour with a minimum of 2 hours for the closet cleanse, but she is willing to offer me the 2 hour closet cleanse for $75; only charging me for 1 hour." Uhm, WHAT??? LOL So not only did she make me chase her for 5-6 weeks, during which I had contacted her 7 times (twice on the phone, 5 times via email) to no avail, (even as of today, she has never called me!) she is now trying to nickel and dime me, and not honor my Lifebooker? Wow. I almost fell off my chair when I saw that. I understand that everyone has personal issues to deal with, however, when someone advertizes a professional service, it is not the customer's job to chase them down, and when a "professional" service provider drops the ball on a client, the right thing to do would be to try to make up for it and try her best to make the client happy, not to try and get more money out of her. That's ridiculous. On a side-note, I was looking for a stylist for an event with my women's group and had she treated me like a customer and not an annoyance that she did not have the time for, I would have asked her to come and she could have met a lot of potential new customers, as most of our events have around 20 young women present... But the way she handled this showed me exactly the type of "professional" she was... So my vote is a no and this experience was definitely a 1-star one. The funny thing is, Arteresa Lynn Personal Styling had two reviews on Yelp, both are 5*, but they are both by one-time reviewers, so I don't know how much value I would put on the "incredible" experience they had, because often the one-time reviewers are fake reviews written by the business owner... But she might be easier to deal with and more responsive when you are paying her directly; if you are trying to use a Lifebooker or any other deal, forget it. My experience has been a total waste of time and a headache.
