I work behind-the-scenes in fashion, so people probably wouldn't think I needed help in that arena, but as I'm nearing a milestone age, I found myself feeling so lost in my personal style and not at all like I was putting my best foot forward. I decided to seek out a stylist because I didn't know how to dress my new, figure after gaining weight and going grey. My experience with Jillian was great. Where do I even start!? After emailing about a few items I was in search of, Jillian and I planned to meet up for some good 'ol bargain hunting at Nordstrom Rack. I told her I was looking for (1) a sturdy pair of smoking loafers, similar to the Everlane ones, (2) a leather (or faux leather) moto jacket, and (3) a dress for a wedding I'm going to in November. I think Jillian is a literal wizard because I ended up ordering 2 pairs of loafers that are identical to what I was looking for before we even met up. 2 pairs for $49 each = 2 pairs for less than 1 pair of Everlane's! Anyway, the day finally came to meet up with Jillian at Nordstrom Rack at the Beverly Connection and she came prepared with a plan and SNACKS! So smart, we all know that shopping can get tiring. We set out for the leather jackets first, and Jillian encouraged me to try on all kinds of styles and sizes. We both loved a "vegan" leather moto by BNCI that was on sale for $59. I had budgeted $200 for the jacket, so this was a major score. Next, we went to look at shoes... because why not!? I ended up finding a perfect pair of tan dolce vita (my favorite shoe brand!) booties on sale for $70. Not bad at all. Now here's where the magic really happened. While looking for dresses for a friend's wedding I'm attending in November (it's cocktail attire), Jillian and I both scoured the racks. She pulled a ton of dresses, one in particular that I was unsure about. It had metallic details, a shoulder ruffle thing, and was a print, while I normally go for solids. I wasn't sold, but said I would definitely try it on. We probably pulled around 10 dresses in total, and the metallic/printed number was by far my favorite. It is so flattering, so feminine, so fun, and 100% something I would never choose for myself! I felt so grateful to have Jillian there to encourage me to go outside my usual look, explain how the dress worked for my figure, and she also give some tips on tailoring to make it look even better. I wanted to spend $120 maxon a dress, and this one was $160. I went back and forth, but decided since I had saved on the jacket, I would just go for it. Lo and behold, at the register, the dress was only $74!!! The original sale price was $350! We were both ecstatic. In addition to the event dress, I also ended up getting a Madewell striped long sleeved shift dress from the clearance rack ($30 down from $110). Jillian gave me some styling tips for fall/winter since I live on the east coast and it won't be warm much longer. It's a great everyday piece. All in all, I spent $256 at our in-store trip, and another $100 online. 6 awesome pieces for the original price of that amazing dress. I can't wait to start wearing all of my stuff and look forward to enlisting Jillian's help again when I need a wardrobe refresh in the spring. Thanks to Jillian I now have a closet full of awesome outfits to wear that fit my personal style and I feel better about myself and my body than I have in a really long time. I had worked with a stylist years ago, and the experience was so strange and so removed from reality that I was hesitant to do it again but was interested once I met Jillian and saw how down-to-earth she is and how she works with any budget and is so approachable and lovely. Starting with the basics, like editing your closet (without judgement and without pressure, which is refreshing), and helping you put together new looks from your existing wardrobe ("shop in your own closet") which is fabulous and makes you feel like you have a ton of new things to wear, and she can also go shopping with you and/or do onling shopping for you. She gave me AMAZING pro-tips during our session together in my closet, and even pulled a few things that needed tailoring to make them more current and modern, which was great. Jillian is awesome and working with her improved my life and saved me money. Before Jillian, this is how I shopped: "I have nothing to wear" I would think to myself, go to the store, find cute things, find great sales, get the cute stuff, get the good bargain, bring it all home, hang it up and be so happy, then go into my closet the next day and have nothing to wear. This would play out over and over and despite my best intentions, the cycle would continue where I would spend money and have nothing to wear. With Jillian, we went through my closet, got rid off ill fitting things, things no longer in style, etc. Then she made the magical list, listing all the things I needed for my current lifestyle and things that would work with my current clothes and make them wearable (shoes, accessories, complementing top/bottom). She is super professional and organized and made a spreadsheet I was able to adjust based on my budget. She then went shopping, while I went on with my life, doing things I needed to do. The following week we met up and she had all the clothing and shoes laid out for me to try on. There were multiple options and fits and a few fun things she threw in that I would never pick up on my own, but that I loved. I tried on everything and we picked out things that worked. Jillian is amazing. We started with a phone call, and I loved her down to earth manner and her passion for what she does. I loved my session with Jillian. She is a fun, talented, professional stylist who really knows her stuff! :) First, she brings ginger chews and organic lollipops to sessions. Yaassssss. Second, she's handled a WIDE RANGE OF STYLES and knows what you're going for even if it's very different from her own style. I've seen this on my co-workers. I thought at first I should pick a stylist that has a similar style as me but I've realized a skilled stylist is knowledgeable in many areas. Third, my body is like a 12 year old boy so most clothes fit me pretty easily. I didn't think I really needed a stylist but then I started thinking of a FRICTIONLESS MORNING ROUTINE and thought of pain points I've had for years that she could help me through. It TAKES ME A LONG TIME TO THINK OF AN OUTFIT and not because it has to look good, it's more like I didn't do enough laundry and could I get away with this? -- PROBLEMS: 1) I wanted to spend 0 time thinking of what to wear to work in the mornings 2) My clothes are either formal and uncomfortable -or- super casual and comfortable - neither ideal for work 3) I wear black, grey, and blue every day of my life - actually I love this -- SOLUTIONS: 1) For spending 0 time in the morning -- Jillian suggested a FORMULA and had a 3-RULE TRICK. She started grabbing items from my closet that could be part of my CAPSULE COLLECTION (guys I have a Collection). This is EXACTLY what I needed, a way to think about putting an outfit together that doesn't take much thought but still looked put together. I've also been weary about wearing a full face of makeup to work and she suggested just a pop of color on the lip and I was like hmm why not? 2) For opposite clothes problem -- Jillian suggested I think about DRESSING DOWN A FORMAL OUTFIT rather than dressing up a casual one. She pulled my blazers and put together some outfits for me to try. I never would have paired blazers with slouchy-ish jeans or a dress (which I never wear) but it totally made sense after I saw it and I actually liked the outfits! I was impressed that she could BREAK ME OUT OF CATEGORIES and think more creatively. 3) Wearing dark emo colors -- It seemed counterintuitive at the time, but Jillian suggested getting certain pieces to break up the dark colors so that I could keep wearing dark colors but look like I have VARIETY. I asked for her advice on what pieces I needed and she told suggested a utility jacket, jean jacket, neutral colored pants, and sneakers to MIX UP my black-on-black-with boots look. -- RESULT: It was fun to hear what she thought my styles was i.e. "athleisure with an edge" -- somehow this really clicked for me and I started to buy thing that aligned with that. The first week after I bought platform sneakers, wore lipstick, and put on a few accessories. I felt really good and SURPRISINGLY FREE that I could wear what I wanted to wear without restricting myself or adapting it in a way that was appropriate for the workplace. I spent very little time in the morning getting ready and felt I could get out of my rut with my existing clothes. I even wore a dress out one night. To be honest, I didn't know if I really needed a stylist if I wasn't high up on the corporate ladder or a C-level actress on CW but Jillian was very empowering to me in the sense that she believed anyone can become confident in their own personal style (and have one). -- I plan on requesting Jillian again for her many services.
