If you are in Chicago this is something you need to plan on seeing! They have multiple shows every single day. We went to "The Best of Second City" and it was amazing we were cracking up the whole time. The performers were incredible and hilarious. The jokes were witty and the improv was really creative. They serve drinks and a small food menu - loved that they offered mocktails, the food was more like snacky, I would recommend eating before. The theater was great but it did get chilly so definitely bring a sweater! Also if you do not want to get called on try to avoid front or middle seats!

I've been here a few times over the years. It's such a cool place that has had so many wonderful comedians grace the stages. We were here December 30 for holidazed & amused. It was a fun, holiday sketch show. Over 2 hours of improv & staged comedy. So many hilarious sketches. The seats all had a good view of the stage. Although our chairs were an odd height as my feet didn't touch the ground & no where for feet on the bottom of the chair. Not very comfortable. It's always crowded at comedy shows, so it wasn't bad as I remembered the last time I was here. Highly recommend & can't wait to see another show again.

We had way too much fun at their improv show. They mixed current events with classic bits, and the whole place was literally laughing out loud. The in-theatre menu is on point too--think delicious smash burgers, table snacks, and perfectly mixed drinks like the "Call Back" and "Obvious Song." Perfect for a date night, solo night, or girls' night-all for under $20!

My wife and I have been going to second city since 1981. It's grown from one theater to now four that are all housed in the same building. It's important to know which specific theater your comic act is in cause the theater assistants are almost useless with directing you to the multi level theater arrangement. They need more assistants in directing their customers to the proper theaters. Comic acts are not near as good as the comics in the 1980's. They seem to have forgotten that personal appearance and hygiene still matter in comedy. Still we will go back next time we visit once we figure out how to select which of their four theaters have the best comedians.

How can you go wrong when in Chicago? Always a great time! We got to the show about :30 before show time. We were seated on the rail and got settled in. Our server came by and got our food/drink order. We were served promptly-amazing feat given the crowd. We took our servers suggestion and nibbled on the Elote Dip. Solid suggestion! The comedy club is a must when you are in town!

So much fun and knowing many big actors started out at The Second City like Dan Akroyd and Chevy Chase. This is where the big ppl started over 50 years ago! Greatness and the spirit of amazement rests here. We saw the Theory of Chaos today. It was fun. I would say Second City actors are my favorite in Chicago. Smart and well trained.

We had the best time! We attended the "this too shall slap" and the cast was absolutely hilarious! We laughed the whole time. We ate before hand, but had a waiter making sure we were refreshed on drinks the whole time.... The inside is dark and it's similar to an SNL performance. We had the best time and it was definitely one of the highlights of our trip!

Is there parking nearby? My husband is handicapped and can't walk too far.

There is a parking garage across the street-we booked on SpotHero!

What is the difference between front row, premium rail, and general admission.? Is the higher price worth it?

Question is more about you personally. Would it bother you if they picked you to go on stage? Or if they made you into part of a improve discussion? If it would bother you, you wouldn't want to be close/front row IMO. The Premium rail used to be… Read more

You have a number of shows and tickets. Which is for the main club / feature show?

The mainstage show is called "Algorithm Nation or The Status Quo." That's the main club/feature show. There's also the "Second City e.t.c 43rd Revue" which is the other main show. Both are great! I recommend both.

Do you have to be over 21 to see a show here?

Hey! Thanks for reaching out! Our only age restriction is that we don't admit anyone under the age of 10. Anyone 11-17 just needs an adult present with them.

Is it worth it to buy the "Rail" (premium) seats?

    I do not think so.

    How long are the shows?

The total experience is a couple of hours. That includes drinks and snacks before the show , a breif intermission and the show.

When do doors open for an 11pm show?

I went to the first show and they let us in about 1/2 hour before show. That was enough time to get everyone seated and provide food and drinks

How early would you recommend coming if we just have general seating?

It honestly depends on the show you're seeing. Some sell out beforehand and some you have no problem getting tickets same night. Just to be safe, I'd do 20-30 minutes before. You can go to the restaurant/lounge and grab a drink, bite to eat or play… Read more

Is the comedy very inappropriate/raunchy? Would it make parents (in their late 50s/early 60s) uncomfortable?

Our current shows in Chicago contain R-rated content. Everyone keeps their clothes on (we're not like 50 Shades of Grey) but content and language is R-rated (think Old School or The Hangover). If you're comfortable attending an R-rated movie with… Read more

When we first arrived, upon checking our tickets, our tickets wouldn't scan/verify. The usher was getting frustrated with us for this, and made us go to the ticket booth to get our physical tickets. We showed the person the tickets on our phone, and she printed them out for us -- after several rounds of confusion on her part. She was so soft spoken (in a noisy theatre entrance) that it led to much confusion. After this, we had to "cut" back into the entrance line (the security guard was helpful here) and we got thru the gates, finally. Then this usher/ticket checker who scanned our tickets (the 2nd time) was literally yelling at us on which direction to go (not a yelling as in being loud, but yelling like we were stupid). I go the way he yells at me because he won't stop yelling at me to go the direction he points me in -- which is the wrong direction. We had orchestra seats and were headed there, but this usher/ticket checker was yelling at us to go up the stairs. Fine, maybe I'm wrong. We get upstairs, and the 2nd usher again points us in the wrong direction to go further upstairs. This is again incorrect. We are flustered and confused, and not sure what is going on. We finally reach the 3rd usher at the top of the stairs, and he finally points us in the correct direction. The ushers here (Sans the 3rd one) were incompetent and rude.

Somehow, I learned about a children's production presented through their educational wing. I'm not sure if their education & engagement was this strong in years past or perhaps I simply wasn't dialed into their offerings, but that's definitely changing now. We went to see Splish Splash. This was a 50 minute long story about a blue heron and friends who are seeking to repair the moon after it fell into Lake Michigan. There were songs, there was play, and it was highly interactive. The kids--fellow "sailors", along with three of the cast members--learned a song to sing along at various parts of the show. There were several times when the kids were invited onto the "stage" (it was in one of their lab/classroom spaces, so there wasn't a raised stage) to help or participate. It was so well done, and kept the kids engaged. I really loved how this experience was designed. Upon arrival we were checked in and pointed to one of the classroom spaces. I was surprised because I wasn't sure how actors could be safe there, but it was actually a room for the kids to color and read books or play with toys and stuff before we were taken into the room where the performance took place. I've only seen something that was meant to keep kids busy like that before showtime is at Filament Theatre, and we've gone to kids shows at two or three other theaters by now. It was a great touch. This production was specifically geared toward children aged 0-5, which is atypical and felt so special that it was written with the littlest theatergoers. One of the important pre-show reminders was for adults, reminding us that it's a no-shush zone! I'm so excited that one of the most important theaters in the city, and the oldest non-profit theater still in operation in Chicago, is so committed to developing young audiences in an exciting way and meeting them where they're at. We'll be regulars at their Theatre for the Very Young programs.

I was reminded of the same issues I mentioned in my earlier review, issues that persist after almost a decade. Like many theatres, they make you wait outside (in this case, in the cold), while they get the theatre ready. Maybe they don't want to pay for the workers to be there for too long beforehand? It makes for a crappy experience. You are then funneled inside while security guards bark orders at you, even when all you're doing is trying to find your way inside in a polite manner. Luckily, the guard in our line was nice enough and joked around with the kids. The lobby is tiny, unlike the other major theatres downtown, so that is something to be aware of. There's really zero room to breathe, and the intermission bathroom line snakes up from the basement into the bar line. Luckily, I got there earlier on, but that's a bad experience. The bathrooms aren't that nice, sadly, and they could use extra care. There are a lot of stalls that don't lock, don't have purse hooks attached anymore, etc. Worse yet, the attendants are on a power trip, though they're not quite as mean as others in similar theatres, and the line moves quickly. I just don't appreciate them yelling "up against the wall!" It's a bit much. The orchestra seats were pretty comfortable and even have good sight lines for short people! From what I saw, the snacks weren't as expensive as one might imagine, though not cheap. Frustratingly, there is no public wifi here. What year is it?

I attended The Phantom of the Opera last night and unfortunately, the experience was significantly disrupted by a visibly intoxicated family seated nearby. They spoke throughout the performance and, most notably, sang very loudly during the final song--directly over the performer during what is meant to be a pinnacle and emotionally powerful moment of the production. This behavior was disruptive and diminished the experience for many audience members in the surrounding area. This was not an isolated incident. Last year, while attending Moulin Rouge at your theatre, I experienced a similar situation involving two belligerent and intoxicated audience members who talked, sang, danced, and cried audibly through much of Act I and part of Act II before finally being escorted out. I paid $250 for my ticket last night to see one of my favorite musicals, and it is deeply disappointing to have that experience compromised by behavior that should be unacceptable in a professional theatre setting. Audience etiquette is essential to preserving the integrity of live performance, and more proactive intervention would go a long way in protecting both patrons and performers. I want to emphasize that the theatre itself is beautiful, and the productions you host are outstanding. It is precisely because of the quality of your programming that I feel compelled to raise this concern. I strongly encourage you to consider stronger audience management practices to ensure that future performances can be enjoyed as intended.
