Would have loved to go to this place bc I've heard good things but the door guy is an absolute jerk so I left. He checked my ID in front of the solid closed door then handed it back and let me sit outside while I waited for permission to walk in. The Saint is definitely a go-to for late night music and dancing. I mean seriously, late. People don't arrive to this place until 2:30am. The drinks are ok as far as price and strength. The DJ is always pretty good...they typically play a mix of current and throw back rap/hip hop/pop hits. It is just SO. EXTREMELY. HOT. in this place during the hot months...pretty much as hot and humid as outside, but worse because it's a whole bunch of people packed into a room with zero ventilation. Thank goodness for the Gatorade jug with water. But otherwise, it's a good move for late night music and dancing...the only other option is pretty much Frenchman. read more

This review is Lucky #666. I debated on what to review for this milestone and finally decided on The Saint. Towards the end of a long night out, a friend suggested we try the Saint. I had heard things, but never been myself. This was an odd place. Inside there was a room with people dancing to local rap music, and another room with a bar. We chose the bar. Service was acceptable, and the beer was reasonably priced. We did choose PBR since it seems that drinking expensive beer in a place like this kind of misses the point. In fact, I don't even know what other beer they may or may not have. The music was loud and primarily rap. This was perfect for me as I was able to rap along which always impresses people. There were some interesting people in this bar. Some guy was ranting to me about some government conspiracy while another was just staring at me as if I was an alien. This was not a negative and actually made for a much more interesting experience. I am sure I will end up here again. read more

The latest discovery in New Orleans. I'm so happy I made it to The Saint! My boyfriend and I were staying in the LGD, and got into town on Tuesday night and settled by midnight. We were in a predicament: we can either go to bed now, wake up early and start fresh in the morning....OR....find a drink and see where the night takes us. C'mon, we're in New Orleans, do we really need to think about it? The Saint is tucked away from Magazine street. We actually ended up missing it at first, and started drinking at another pub. But after one drink we were super excited to find The Saint. I wasn't sure what to expect from The Saint, especially on a Tuesday night...well I guess technically Wednesday. I was surprised to see a bouncer at the door. We went in and the smell hit us right away. Yep, we're in a true dive. There were about 4 people at a bar, another group of 4 people, including a woman with her small dog by the altar (?), and someone belting out on Karaoke. It was Karaoke/Tiki Tuesday! Despite being Tiki Tuesday, I opted for an Old Fashioned, which was very well made, and my bf stuck with beer. We found the one lone table on the corner of the dance (?) floor and spent the rest of the night watching different people sing karaoke. The bf and I were impressed that people were selecting really random songs, not the usual karaoke BS, you'd find some frat boy singing on Bourbon Street. And the DJ! The DJ, I forgot her name, was HILARIOUS! It wasn't a big crowd by any means, but she was very naturally engaging. We ended up leaving close to 3am, and the crowd couldn't have been more than 12 people by that point. I can only imagine how crowded it gets on the weekends, so I'm glad we went on a damn Tuesday. What an interesting place! Not what you would expect from the outside - a pretty big place. Lots of open space to dance around inside. There is a nice outdoor area with a bar that is quite large. Bar staff was friendly and chatty. A bit of strange decor but just because it is not my style. Tried one of their daiquiri's and was happy with how it tasted. Prices seemed reasonable! It was sometime between 12 am and 6 am a Tuesday and they had a person checking for IDs sounds promising only thing was when I entered there was a small crowd, there was bunch of dudes singing drunk karaoke, a few wondering girls at the bar. Yea you guys go sing I'm fine here at the bar, everything was purely conversational, not drunk enough to fight off someone but when I leave and someone follows... The drinks cost more than the bars I just came from but reasonable, I would've gone back there, at least better drinks deals and more space, but there seemed like more people here. I walked around a little looking around for a hidden room or something literally it was as big as my garage. I hung out a little at the bar ordered a few drinks, took a couple snapshots, conversed a little, checked out the scene, and walked out after about half an hour. Maybe on another night this place might be the spot but when I left the only thing I could think about was where the hell can I get a tetanus shot this late. I kind of liked it but not so. Sometimes your curiosity gets the best of you and you have to find out what's behind the door. Walking around the neighborhood we stumbled upon The Saint and were curious what this joint was. Without checking Yelp and opting to just find out for ourselves, we walked into this bar to discover some flavor. From the one-of-a-kind-altar, karaoke night on Tuesday, a sex toy arcade game, photobooth, and all the eclectic decorations- we knew we were in for a fun time. Drinks are very well priced and this bar is no frills when it comes to its vibe. Stellar liquor selection and ample amount of seating, inside and out, you can guarantee you'll have a great time. Oh wow. It had been quite sometime since I'd been in the Saint and probably never as early as I was this most recent time. But this where friends wanted to hang out after dinner, so there you go. Like all NOLA bars, I'm so glad they are non-smoking now. I seem to remember barely being able to see my friends through the haze. Yes it's a dive bar but they offer a solid pour...I wouldn't order anything fancy. And the bartenders are great, until you annoy or anger one then you might as well leave. But that's the way of all dive bars. They usually have a guy on door who is appropriately terse and will check your ID, no matter your age so that's fun. As always, entertainment value depends on who you're with and what's going on around you. read more

I live very nearby but have never been inside, just outside many times. I feel the need to warn readers that "The Saint" is in an extremely dangerous neighborhood, less than 2 blocks from the infamous "River Garden"; think the looting videos from Huricane Katrina days. Couple months ago, a patron stepped outside "The Saint" for a cellphone call and was shot there by strangers. Five, including a 3-month old baby girl were shot in a drive-by a couple blocks away earlier this year. There are many, many better choices within a few blocks; including Jackson, Down the Hatch, Half Moon, leCitron, Cafe Roma, Parasol's, Eleven79, Sun Ray, Ugly Dog, Dino's, Rusty Nail, Brick Courtyard, Bridge Bar, Rum House, etc. Famous "Magazine Street", with many interesting places is a little over a block away, but a world away re safety. Really like this place,. The location is on the spooky side, but he, makes you feel cool to go somewhere that you may not belong until you step inside this bar. I gotta admit im embarrassed, I had been to this bar 4 times before I realized there was an outside patio. That only made this place a 1000 times better. I been here when it was a quiet night, maybe a little early and everyone (6 people) was at the inside bar watching Jackass2.5 I been here when it was so crowded , I wished everyone was a big fan of deodorant as I am. Either way, everytime I came, I had a great time. Im more of a beer drinker than anything so I cant comment on the mixed drinks but by the looks of it, they appeared to be pretty stiff. The beer selection is decent too. On tap is nice, Blue Moon, Magic Hat, Abitas to name a few. The music they play when a DJ is in has varied greatly. Walked in once and they were jamming to Reggae, another time it was a Cure night and the most recent, we were bouncing along to some NOLA Clap. A friend of mine DJs a black metal night here, so OBVIOUSLY i had to check it out. I was pretty stoked after hearing about it from my local friends, but when i walked in.... HIPSTERS?! What the fuck?! My friends quickly explained that new management was trying to turn it into a trendy dive bar, but they were doing their best to keep their watering hole and were still allowed to run their metal night, so hopefully the alternative crowd won't get run out of there. No frills, no gimmicks, just a tiny, dark bar with taxidermy on the wall, graffiti everywhere, and.... a photo booth!? (i assume that was installed after they tried to appeal to the hipster crowd) Drinks were awesome, and i recall the special was actually $6.66 haha. After about an hour of metal most of the hipsters were weeded out, and i was even more impressed since some of them stayed and seemed to enjoy themselves. Guess i shouldn't judge a book by its cover. One hipster chick was chewing out her boyfriend for not knowing who Judas Priest is. The tiki-esque patio area out back was totally nice to since if the music was too loud, you could just step out there to chat and warm up a bit. After a serious review of my review I find no reason to not add a star since, by some miracle, I survive every visit to The Saint, which is saying a lot. Please preface my update with my previous review. It all still stands. What have I gleaned from my serendipitous visits over the last 4 years, and my most recent experience this NYE?...I will tell you. Leave any 'tude at home. This space is NOT, dare I repeat, NOT big enough for it. No 'tude. Just good or weird vibes can pass the librarian-meets-orc defender bouncer, with proper ID, through the dark foyer (I'm not sure what else to call it but you'll understand if you ever go) into the Saint. Most recently, I had some dudes looming over me that were like, "dude, I was here first...no I was here first." You're not in line to get a cookie during little recess, bros. Your neediness scares away the 'tenders. Act like you totally don't want that drink, and you will be served promptly. Recent Discovery #1: Go With A Daq! There is no need to act like a badass and order Jameson shots just to realize you also want a vodka soda so you have to act like you don't need a drink again for another 15 minutes...'cause, hello, the rotation has started over again. Back to the daqs...they have delicious options! I asked for a chocolate-y one, and they had TWO, not one, but TWO options. Real talk, I can't chug uber-cold drinks, so one of their daqs can last me hours so no need to patron the always busy bar as often. And if you were to ask the 2:00am version of myself, they ain't too shabby. And no one gets 'tude when drinking daqs, and if you do, you probably need to go see someone about that. Recent Discovery #2: The Photo Booth! I WISH I could tell you whether or not it just took cash or credit as well, but my recollection is that it's just cash per my hazy-but-somewhat vivid recollection of yelling for more dollars at anyone passing by. You call it a hot mess, I call it makin' memories. Also a great space if you would like to have an earnest conversation with a person you just met that doesn't remember you the next time you're there 6 months later (spoken through a friend). Recent Discovery #3: Sex Toy Claw Machine. I haven't so much discovered it as just kind of looked at it. I have been known to extricate a fluffy bunny or two from such machines, but alas, I probably need to carry some coinage with me next time I visit The Saint. Last Discovery...I must keep to myself. It is the sole reason I was not swept away by the wave upon wave of overly-eager patrons that crashed into The Saint at the ungodly hours when it thrives on New Year's Eve. ...and no I have no bathroom aka Hobbit Hole updates. Last note, and this isn't a recent discovery. This is like the ultimate rule. Never. ever. ever. ever. ever. ever. ever ever. ever. Don't ever check the time and/or say it out loud while you are in the four...er. maybe like six or eight walls of The Saint. Quite possibly the biggest sin you can commit in there and you will immediately be transformed into the biggest of fun sponges that ever did live. Personal experience? Lol The Saint is pretty far away from Magazine and other bars in general, and always expensive to get to by uber/lyft/taxi. Very divey even for a divey DJ/dance joint. A bar with a questionable identity and loads of unneeded attitude. More of an late AM place than an early AM place or a night starter joint. Have credit card minimums, small area, very confined outdoor area (not completely open air, so all the cigarette smoke does not ventilate out). Every night I go I am fortunate I survive to the next day. Strange decor like some of the other reviews said. Just not my thing. They had a dirty photo booth that doesn't work. Overall sloppy, I wouldn't want to go back but I suppose there's not really much in this area. read more

This is my first yelp review so I'm making it a good one. I like the saint. The music, the atmosphere, the crazy people that go have major dance parties. So why am I giving them one star? Plain and simple, I'm tired of their bull$&*# with IDs. A couple of weeks ago me and my friends went to the Saint to end our night with our little dance party. My friend is from Puerto Rico, as am I, but he had his license from PR and was told that because its foreign he couldn't go in. First of all, get your facts straight, IT'S NOT FOREIGN. We tried to explain to the guy on the door that this wasn't foreign ID, that PR is a territory, that we don't even need a passport to come to the U.S. Mainland. But apparently The Saint is more worried about national security than the government. We eventually got in, after somebody explained to the guy on the door a little bit of U.S. history. Yesterday again, for a friend's birthday, we decided to go the Saint after many hours of previous drinking. We go inside, and next thing we know they don't want to let our friend from Panama inside the bar because he doesn't have a passport. I know the situation is different here, because he's actually foreign, but he gave the guy two government issued IDs and he still couldn't get in. As if when you go to The Saint it's wise to carry around your passport. What's more ridiculous as that these two guys could not look a day younger than 25. They actually are older than that. One had a beard! Yet, some people I saw going in were clearly underage, but of course they gave the guy an ID that looked somewhat legit and was "state-issued" so they got the green light. Until the Saint changes their policy I'm not going back. For a city that gets so many foreign tourists, they should know better than to ask people to party with their passports on their pockets. Uhhhhh.... Not sure how to quantify or qualify my experience here. Let's start with back story: My sister was visiting for the weekend, so I wanted to show her a solid night on the town that lasted till the wee hours of the morning. We started on Frenchmen, but for whatever reason it was dead. Deciding to adventure Uptown we proceeded on a respectable bar crawl, including Delachaise, Columns, and St. Joes, however, at 3 AM the usual Uptown culprits start to raise their heads. A summary of the following dialogue: Friends "Let's go to FMs" Me: "No, too much broken glass" Friends: "Let's go to Snake and Jake's" Me: "Eh...." Friends: "Brothers 3?" Me: "I'm afraid I'll hit my head on the ceiling" Friends: "The Saint!!" Me: "I suppose I haven't been there before, I'm curious." After entering the Saint the look on my sisters face was priceless, akin to a deer in headlights look. I kept my countenance, and we ordered a round. Things proceeded as expected ... unwanted dance grinding advances, check! uber drunk guy talking your ear off, check! Big Buck Hunter, CHECK!!! Only in NOLA.... Seems scary from the outside, but the inside is SO FUN! One of the greatest dive bars in the history of dive bars. There is a small bar area to the right with a jukebox. When you enter there is a DJ "booth" and a large area that turns into a dance floor late night. In the back, there is a small-ish outdoor area with another bar. It has everything a dive bar needs, a little dirt, a little eclectic decor, cheap drinks, and of course fun and vibrant patrons. Try the frozen peppermint drink ($5). I don't know what is in that mystery drink sent straight from heaven, but I bet you can't drink more than 2 without experiencing heavy levels of intoxication. PS $10 min on CC's. Ditto what Colin said. The sniper is actually my great grandmother, Mafalda, who has strong ankles, and a predilection for eating raw pickles. Some people would call that a cucumber, but don't say that in front of Mafalda. She would probably challenge you to an arm wrestling contest, which you would lose, because my Mafalda is bowed up like a truck. Anyway, back to the Saint, where I am smoking bath salts and ripping shots of everclear. Be careful when doing this, because you may light your face on fire. This has only happened to me twice, but thats probably why my friends called me "Burned Face." This place is a great option for people looking to contract or spread Hepatitis B. Such as ya boy. This place is a total dive bar! And guess what, I love it! This place is almost always my last stop on the way home. And the later you get there, the better. Dirty, drab but full of interesting characters, you can down cheap drinks with rocket scientists to tattooed punk rockers while playing video games or listening to the ecclectic music collection or watching a GG Allin documentary. Don't come before midnight as the crowd doesn't become interesting until then. If you are looking for a strange and weird little neighborhood bar that attracts a different crowd and is open 'til sunrise, then come to the Saint.
