Old school atmosphere with tin ceiling and wood display cases, there was lot of charm. We bought it all, everything, poppy seed, sesame, sea salt bagels, scones, vagabond pastry... Absolutely appalled how the man working here spoke to my wife. Yelled at her in front of my children. When I confronted him he stormed off and swore at me in front of my two young girls. I cannot believe any place of business treats paying customers like this. Utterly disgusted!!! read more

The Rye Bakery is 'the' bakery in this area. Fresh types of breads, exquisite French, Italian, and German pastry is the order of the day. One most unique type pastry is the Vagabond. A wonderful combination of French cream and chocolate in a light pastry baked dough and with a very light vanilla frosting. The breads range from a variety of over six types from a French Sour Dough to a very fine Black Russian Rye Bread. The breads are wonderful and baked daily. The bakery shares the coffee shop next door; therefore, it is possible to have dessert with coffee in the same building. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable which adds to the European charm of this type of bakery. Serve is fine. The decor is old fashioned with European charm. There is a piano in the bakery as well on a small sound stage which is part of the window. There used to be jazz concerts several years ago before COVID. Overcall,, the Rye Bakery is one of Flushing's more interesting food/bakery establishments. Another Flushing business that seems nicer than it really is based on superficial first impressions, but when you dig a little deeper, it isn't quite what you thought it was. I've been to the Rye Bakery a few times now. Only now have I felt compelled to write a review for it. I don't know why, but while it seems so charming and cute (they get an A- for atmosphere or at least they did- the last visit it didn't look that hot), the service here is always bad and I mean always, as in every single time I've been here. The prices are not that high, but they're definitely too high for what the quality is- to be fair, the quality is kinda middling. at best.. I've never been impressed with their selection and I have suspicions regarding how much product is really baked on site compared to trucked in. Nothing I've gotten here has been very fresh or tasty. Sorry, but the pastries I've purchased taste either commercial or days old. It looks like a cute, small-town bakery, but that's it. Looks are often deceiving.. I've never smelled anything in baking here, regardless of how early or late in the day it was.. that is suspicious.. they never have much selection, they never appear to be baking during the day (or even in the am) or replenishing stock alike other bakeries.. you don't see or smell any baking occurring on site and I wonder why.. I purchased some "homemade" bread here. It was not very fresh and tasted like it was made much earlier, yet it wasn't marked down or advertised as clearance product. Nope, it was regular-price merchandise. The muffins I had here were okay, but tasted pretty similar to grocery store quality at a slightly higher price and were a tad dry. The selection has never been that good. It seems like every time I've been here, they were out of this and that and there was no hope they were going to have any additional product, so if they didn't have it, too bad, you're out of luck if you want something specific. What bakery runs out of product early and all they have left is semi-dry? I didn't find the people working here to be that knowledgeable or particularly helpful. I would think most bakery employees would know more about ingredients, baking method, the stock, etc. I even walked in and there was no one around. The employee came waltzing back from next door like it was nothing to leave the store unmanned. I find the service less than adequate and actually standoffish. The last time we were there the lady working there kept staring awkwardly at the few customers inside, walking around back and forth like she was in a bad mood.. Again, this place looks great from the first impression, but that all falls away once you've had a real experience here. I've definitely experienced better and I don't know that I'd give this one yet another chance. I've already done that and it was the same old bakery. In fact, I've given them a few chances, and it's never been good. And what business is 'cash only' in 2022? Well, Rye Bakery is- along with the Elbow Room and a bar or two in downtown Flushing. This is a strange anomaly, totally inconvenient, outdated, ridiculous and unnecessary and quite honestly, reeks of questionable business practices because why do they not accept credit or debit cards??? I can buy a t- shirt, small piece of art or a bottle of water from a sidewalk vendor or a few bananas or a coffee or a danish at a farmer's market with a credit card (with no minimum purchase) with no fees.. so what is the problem with this place refusing to accept credit cards?? It's not a good way to do business and I am uninterested in doing business in this outmoded manner. If you're looking for a great experience at a bakery, go elsewhere.. read more

This charming little bakery makes wonderful pastries. Many of them are filled with custard or some kind of fruit. I found that the personnel working there very pleasant. Their prices for their pastries are very reasonable. Don't miss this little jam. read more

This is such a great place, excellent pastries...you got to arrive early for the Sabras, Parisennes, and Vagabonds. My favorite muffin is the poppyseed, bran is also good. Bread pudding is great, too. Beautiful building and woodwork, it's a bit like stepping back in time. Great staff, and prices are very reasonable for what you are getting. read more

A solid 5 stars!!! We'd give it more if we could. The Rye is awesome and we make it a point to stop here every time we are in town. The prices are unbelievable and the baked goods even better. Make sure you get here early in the morning because things go fast and they don't make any more throughout the day. We've traveled all over the U.S. and around the world and have yet to find a bakery that tops The Rye for us. Small town living at its best! read more

We love this place and stop in every time we visit from Chicago. The danish-brioche desserts, the Parisiennes, the almond croissants -- everything is always so great I regret not getting more. It all tastes so classily nuanced and yet incredibly flavorful. (And it's always so surprisingly inexpensive.) And and you can pick up an espresso next door from Elbow Room. And and and... this town (and all surrounding towns) truly need more places like these. read more

Not entirely sure what all the fuss is about. Cute location, old building and great architecture. The scones are not impressive. They were rubbery and over cooked. Scones should have a biscuit texture to it, not spongy. My husband had the sticky bun which was good, not great. The coffee shop and bakery share the building and you have to go to the coffee side to get plates and silverware in order to eat on with your purchases from the bakery side. How much sense does that make? read more
