Cake in a jar! Well,…read morethat's the way it's billed, at any rate. Yes, this charming little bakery, located at the farmers market, does, indeed, make cakes/cupcakes in a jar, as well as the regular filled cupcakes in a variety of unique flavors, not to mention custom-ordered cakes. I decided to purchase one of their advertised "cakes in a jar" last month. After sampling several different flavors, I settled on the Triple Chocolate variety. It was easily my favorite, although the Peanut Butter Cup and Strawberry Shortcake were pretty close seconds. I guess the gimmick is that it's a filled cupcake/cake, but served up in a jar. The owner told me these freeze very well, eliminating any potential for freezer burn or dryness, and come out tasting as fresh as the day they were made. She mentioned they could be left frozen for months and still taste just as good as the day they were made. Who's kidding who, though? It's impossible to leave one up in the freezer for that long, so I'll have to take her word for it that it can stay frozen and still taste that fresh for months and months. Well, I decided to give the gimmick a whirl and bought one for $6. The price did seem a tad steep for the size, but I think it was worth it. I decided on the Triple Chocolate "cake in a jar" and did stick it in the freezer for a few weeks, although I certainly couldn't manage to keep it refrigerated for much longer. It was hard to resist the urge to eat it immediately, however, since I had so much excess Easter chocolate lying around, I was able to leave it be for awhile- at least until after all of the Easter goodies had finally been gobbled up. The taste and texture were outstanding, despite being tossed into the freezer for four weeks. It really did taste like it had been made the same day, fresh and moist with zero dryness. I have to admit, I was slightly skeptical, but I was won over by how moist and fresh it really did taste after sitting in the freezer for a couple of weeks. I've put cake in the freezer before, like most people, and it has never tasted exactly the same after a few days, let alone a few weeks, despite how well-wrapped it is, so I was definitely impressed. What a neat concept! Who knew it would work so well? The chocolate flavor was unbelievable, a real winner for any chocoholic. It was incredibly rich and decadent- perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth and I definitely have a sweet tooth. The size of a "cake in a jar" was akin to an incredibly large cupcake. The owner did indicate that for business reasons, the price of the "cake in a jar" was about to increase a little, although she didn't say how much. I assume the increase will be nominal, so it's going to be a little more than $6 apiece from now on. Apart from the delicious "cakes in a jar," they also sell gourmet filled cupcakes for $3 each, made fresh daily, as well as custom cakes for special occasions, upon request/order. The cupcakes and regular-size cakes come in the same delectable flavors as the "cakes in a jar," including the aforementioned Peanut Butter Cup, Triple Chocolate and Strawberry Shortcake, as well as Red Velvet, Nilla Vanilla and Root Beer Float, among others. I can't wait to try the rest!
