Bread pudding
Ashleigh C.

Went here for the first time with my friend and we absolutely loved it. The service is great. The ambience was definitely New Orleans vibes and the food was amazing. I tried bread pudding for the first time and it was hot and delicious. I'm a texture person so I believe my complaints is only personal overall it was amazing though and my friend loved it too. I think for me it would be better with like ice cream the Poboy was magnificent. I added hot sauce and some mayo to mine just because I love sauce but overall I think it's a 10 out of 10.

Shrimp Po Boy

Rougaroux is amazing! I had a shrimp po boy here, and it was just about the best po boy I ever had. The bread literally melts in your mouth. It is the gold standard for me for po boys from now on. The atmosphere and decor is very interesting to say the least. They have both indoor and outdoor patio seating which is heated so no worries if you are out there in the winter!

Another amazing experience was had but this time with a group of seven. Even though we placed separate orders ALL the food came to our table at the same time. They made sure to check on us periodically but everything was prepared to perfection. The group decided to sit outside and pulled some of the smaller tables together. Even though indoor seating was an option. Their po' boys are always a favorite of mine. Be sure to check their socials for ongoing specials.

Shrimp & andouille gumbo with okra.

The food was just alright. I used to live a few blocks away when I lived in Birmingham and it's always been good, just not great. The gumbo was ok... I've had better. The sandwich was just ok as well. I was really looking forward to the lemongrass and chilis but all I could taste was an over abundance of garlic. The frozen cocktails were the highlight of the meal. They were really tasty; we tried the rum punch and the vodka/lemonade/St.German one as well. Actually, the true highlight was the service we received. Everyone was so sweet yet professional. Really wonderful service.

It's been a few years since I visited the Rougaroux. I decided to come for lunch on a Friday afternoon , around 130ish. I was able to easily park in the rear lot. When i entered, it wasn't crowded; just a few people spread throughout. I ordered their lunch special which comes with a drink. I believe it was $15/ plus tax. The beef debris po boy was tasty but it wasn't hot enough. The seafood gumbo WAS hot & hearty. I enjoyed my food overall. Most importantly, service was outstanding. Mackenzie was extremely friendly and beyond helpful! The atmosphere here is like none other- this is one of the cooler spots in town with great food, service and ambiance!

Great Cajun food despite the fact that we thought we had pulled up to a haunted house. Workers were friendly and the decor was kitschy and fun. Gumbo and blackened catfish poboy were on point. The bread was delicious. Large selection of hot sauces. My only big suggestion is that I would have liked a blackened fish basket entree option.

The service here is always great! The food comes out quickly and staff is always polite. I love the laid back atmosphere, and the funky posters and signs decorating the walls. The patio here is the perfect chill place to meet up with friends and have a nice meal together. Their shrimp po boy is about as good as it gets for a seafood dish not served on the coast. The batter on the shrimp is perfection, and the sandwich is dressed perfectly. Only downside is the fries are not well seasoned and are only good if you spend the extra quarters for more sauce.

Burger of the day

The Rougaroux is just all around delicious. I ordered the burger of the day to-go and it didn't disappoint. It had a well seasoned patty topped with cheese, bacon, and fried jalapeños. Sooo tasty! The fries were also hot and crispy, a win all around.

Service was great. I love the decor of the place., the New Orleans vibe is stellar. The prices have gone up slightly but memory of the food validated the worth. I got the blackened catfish and gumbo and both were still as good as before. You can have chicken, shrimp or both in your gumbo. I chose shrimp. One note is it's a cashless, so you have to use your card.

We had a fantastic meal at The Rougaroux! The New Orleans-themed atmosphere made us feel like we'd stepped right into the heart of the French Quarter. I had the catfish with greens--both were flavorful, fresh, and perfectly cooked. My husband ordered a po' boy that he swears was the best he's ever had--crispy, loaded, and seasoned just right. Friendly service and great vibes all around. We'll definitely be coming back!

I love local owned restaurants more so than those other chain restaurants and this one was so great and unique and pure. The food was super authentic and delicious and the server that I placed my order with was super kind and helpful. It's a cool place to hang out with friends or customers or even solo. It's a best place.

Stopped in here on my way south to Florida and it really hit the spot. I got the shrimp po-boy and it was perfect. The bread was soft, the shrimp weren't overcooked and I couldn't get enough of the sauce. My food came out quick and the interior of this place is really cool. Since this was my first time, I asked the guy at the front what I should get and he said that the shrimp po-boy was probably the best sandwich on the menu to serve as an introduction to the awesomeness that is Rougaroux. I'll definitely be stopping back here when I'm passing through again!

Delish and good music atmosphere. Chilled vibe. Definitely a regular spot to relax and eat.

Our waitress was very, very nice and personable and knowledgeable. Any questions that I had she always had an answer for and she was very patient with me as I am kind of a picky eater. The crab claws were amazing the seasoning on the crab claws Were a hit. I ordered the redfish Rockefeller and my daughter ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich. Let me say the red fish Rockefeller has a distinct taste. It is very overpowering from the fish. It has a sweet onion taste and if you like that, then I would recommend this dish, but I didn't like it at all. Our waitress was very nice and told me to pick another dish. I decided to go with chicken dish. I think it's called Bayou chicken I'm not quite sure but it has a crawfish Louie sauce. I asked for the sauce on the side just in case I didn't like it and I'm glad I did. The sauce is thick, very thick like a gravy and was tasteless. I told her I would just pay for the entrée and not worry about sending it back, but the manager came over and asked me how was the dish and I told her I wasn't a fan but I would pay for it. He said no and brought me the menu again and told me to pick another entrée I was surprised because normally by this time you know, people are over it and, not really willing to please the customer but they were. I decided just to play it safe and go with fried shrimp which came with fries and coleslaw. I'm glad I chose this dish because I really enjoyed it. Also, the French 75 was really really good.

I wish it was served with tortilla chips instead of bread (which is nothing special) but never the less it was VERY tasty and had a hint of spice which wasn't too overbearing. The portion was very small for $15 though. The Bourbon Street Fettuccine on the other hand was very very bland. I had to add in my own seasonings and the shrimp and chicken tasted like they had no kind of seasoning. I would not get that again. Overall I would come back, especially if other items taste like the creole dip!

They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and since it was such a beautiful day, we decided to enjoy the patio. However, I took off a star because not a single staff member shared how things work there! After being told we could sit anywhere, we found ourselves just waiting without any guidance. At last, a server delivered food to the table next to ours, which prompted us to ask why no one had come to us. She was super apologetic and handed us menus while explaining that we need to go to the register to order and pay first, and then we'd get a number for our table. As for drinks, if you want an adult beverage, you have to order those separately at the bar. You'd think there'd be some signage indicating the process since it's a bit different from the usual! But let's talk about the food! We split the shrimp & grits and chicken & pancakes. While I usually prefer my grits creamy, I still found the shrimp mix to be tasty! The pancake was a tad thick for my liking, but the fried chicken was definitely the highlight--it was absolutely delicious! Oh, and the Hennessy Margarita? Totally on point! Overall, this place is definitely worth a visit!

I'm not 100% vegetarian, but I get my vegetables in every day, and Red Sea never disappoints. It comes with Shiro Wot (spiced chickpea flour in berbere sauce), Misir Key Wot ([spicy]split red lentils cooked in berbere sauce), Gomen (Ethiopian style greens or spinach), Key Sir (beet roots cooked in garlic, ginger, onions & peppers), Kik Alicha Wot(spilt peas cooked in berbere sauce), Atkilt (curried cabbage, carrots, and potatoes) and I always get Injera bread (similar to a crepe but spongy and sour) with mine; I gotta sop up the flavors. Eat it and you will be kinda plumpy leaving out happily satisfied. For dinner, I usually get the Key Wot (Beef stew), Alicha Wot (curried Beef stew), or Chicken Doro Wot (dark meat, typically Chicken leg with red pepper sauce with a boiled egg) and a side of Gomen or Key Sir. Yes, I love beets if you haven't noticed, LOL! I've only ordered to-go once, I have to sit and absorb all the flavors while I'm there. Besides, I'd be tempted to sneak a taste while driving. The staff is always attentive and the quiet atmosphere reminds me of a secluded restaurant because many drive by it without ever noticing this rare gem in Birmingham. If you're in the Homewood area, do yourself a favor and stop in and try some Ethiopian food. And if that doesn't suit your taste, they have Cajun menu items like Seafood or Chicken & Sausage Gumbo, Gator bites, Red Beans & Rice, Po-Boys, Fried Green Tomatoes. And if that's not your lane, they also offer a Mediterranean menu with items such as Chicken Shawarma, Lamb Shank, Kebabs, and Gyros.

There's a big shopping center parking lot with plenty of parking so that's not a concern. It's in more of an older shopping center in an area. That's not very well kept. Either way, we felt safe and wanted to try a new place for dinner. The Restaurant is very colorful and I love that about it. In the photos that I saw online, I didn't realize that the chairs were just covers that had all the beautiful colors but either way it's a lot for the eyes to take in. We arrived on a Friday evening close to 5 o'clock and we were the only ones there until we were just about to leave. I do believe that they have more orders that are picked up by DoorDash and delivery services. I was excited to try the stuffed grape leaves and my plan was to get the hummus with pita bread and add lamb to it for my entrée. Unfortunately, they were out of the stuffed grape leaves, and when I tried to order the hummus, they were also out of the hummus. That was unfortunate, but I went ahead and ordered the chicken Shawarma roll which came with french fries. We both liked our food, which was fresh and flavorful. The fries on my platter don't look appetizing, but they came out hot in seasoned just right! We also ordered the fried green tomatoes and place of the stuffed grape leaves that we wanted as an appetizer. They came out hot and fresh and was very delicious. Both of our meals, including one soda for my son was only like $36 which is excellent in today's economy! We both also took some of our food home so the portions are good. Overall a good experience. I'd definitely try it again. It's not one of my top choices with all that Birmingham has to offer but definitely worth coming back to.
