So I came across this place on a news feed talking about a second location and I didn't even know there was a first. So a friend from work and I decided to try it for lunch. He's one of those original Louisiana boys who said nothing tastes like home but I dragged him anyway. He had a muffuletta and gumbo and I had the surf and turf. As expected his was good but not the central market, go figure. Mine however was outstanding. Roast beef was perfect and shrimp was amazing. The cornmeal mix batter was so good. Found this place on Yelp and decided to try it for the gumbo! The building itself is a bit of an attraction with the theme. It puts you in the mood for true Cajun food. I'm a native of the Gulf Coast with French-Cajun family, and have been consistently disappointed with seafood in Birmingham, and don't even get me started with "Cajun" food. Then I tried Rougaroux. I felt like I was back home! I was very skeptical going in, but left impressed. I haven't tried many dishes because the BBQ shrimp poboy is so good, I don't want anything else! I've never had gumbo served over potato salad except at family gatherings- they get it! The gumbo is good but not my family recipe, so I can say it's very good. The atmosphere of this place is pretty cool. It has that kinda creepy vibe that is both fitting and appropriate for a restaurant that serves the food of an area known for cemeteries, voodoo, funeral parades, etc. The menu is limited with a focus on po' boys, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I was intrigued by their gumbo, but I opted for their surf and turf po' boy, a po' boy that's half roast beef and half fried shrimp. For twelve dollars I would have expected more in both quality and quantity. The roast beef came with provolone and for a hot sandwich, you would think the provolone would have been at least partially melted. The roast beef was just not good. I cannot pinpoint a distinct reason for it, it was just not good. The shrimp side of the po' boy was infinitely better, but that was not hard to do. I wouldn't say that it was great, but it was good. The ordering process is that you order at the bar and are given a number. You find a seat and your food is brought to you. A final comment and perhaps it is just a pet peeve of mine. They upcharge for certain condiments. When I placed my order at the bar, I was asked if I wanted either remoulade or tartar sauce. I asked for the remoulade and discovered when looking at my receipt that they charged fifty cents for the remoulade. I have no problem with paying extra for additional items, but to charge fifty cents for something that literally cost pennies is in my opinion, poor taste. We were in Birmingham today for some appointments and was having a late lunch. Saw the great reviews for the Rougaroux and decided to try it. My husband and I both had gumbo, and it was really good. Usually I don't order gumbo at most restaurants but the reviews made me confident it would be good, and I was not let down. We also got bread pudding, which I usually do not like at all. I figured I would eat a bite or two and not want any more. I was WRONG. The bread pudding was soo good, I ate half of it and he ate the rest. So glad we gave Rougaroux a chance. It is definitely unique with its decorations and quaint being in an old house, which is easy to pass by/see, but other reviewers pointed that out so we were on the lookout. They have specials of the day which change for lunch and dinner! There po'boy sandwich menu is on point! All the ones I have had are fabulous and ask them when you order sometimes they can do special requests off menu. The burgers of the day have been on point! They also have a great happy hour, pbr for 2.50 and coors for $3.00! Sometimes Dixie is available. They do have a good collection of can beer options and locals as well. Every time I visit B'ham I have a hard time deciding where to eat because there are so many good places! Since good cajun/creole places are lacking where I live, I thought I'd give this place a try. I ordered a cup of gumbo and the viet cajun poboy. The gumbo was some of the best I've ever had--perfect thickness and flavor. The poboy was pretty darn great as well. I'm not sure where they get the bread, but it's the stuff at all poboys should be made of. Excellent balance of chewy and crusty. I love viet-cajun crawfish, so I was thrilled to see it as a poboy option. It could have used a little more garlic and lemongrass seasoning to give it a stronger viet-cajun flavor profile, but I still enjoyed it. So before I get deep into my review let me give you the backstory on how I came across this Hidden Gem. Back in March for my birthday weekend my gf told me get dress and don't ask any questions dammit! Lol we arrived to Rougar at first I was like where the hell am I?! We sat down at the bar and was greeted by Molly who is totally wicked dude with an awesome vibe and personality to match. We let her know this was our first time and we were excited to try it out. She made sure we were well taken care of. Let me know some of her personal favs, specials at the moment and even about the small batch hot sauce cart. We started off with two boudins which one is big enough to share! And the Gumbo which was great and didn't lack any flavor at all. I love hot sauce so I added a dash for an extra kick! Waiting on our surf and turf Po'boy, I had a watermelon Jolly Rancher frozen alcoholic drink and it taste just like a watermelon Jolly Rancher. (The stick Jolly Rancher, not the hard candy) lol. After that our Po'boy came out and the gulf shrimp omg so fresh and flavorful. The whole thing was great, but the BREAD they use. State of the art it's sooooo soft and just melts in your mouth every bite. Some of the best bread I ever had in my life. The service is wonderful very efficient, the staff is wonderful. Everyone is so pleasant and checks on you throughout your experience to make sure you don't need anything! This place is a vibe to say the least. Makes you feel very welcomed. I have been here three times now since my birthday and the other two times was yesterday and today lol. Yesterday we tried the salty dog frozen alcoholic drink which is grapefruit forward and I'm not a big fan of grapefruit, but Molly suggested it and I trust her judgement and I enjoyed it. Today we decided to try the blackened catfish and the oyster Rockefeller. Out of the two I enjoyed the blackened catfish more! The oyster Rockefeller wasn't bad at all I just felt like it was missing something I couldn't put my finger on. All in all I highly recommend trying this place out Mon-Saturday for a good vibe and wonderful food and awesome service. Also dogs are allowed which is a plus on beautiful days you want to bring the pup along on a food adventure. My ratings so far of the po'boys I have tried are 1. Viet Cajun, blackened cat fish, surf and turf, Buffalo fried oyster, Oyster Rockefeller. Last but not least the white chocolate bread pudding w/ pecan praline rum sauce! It comes out nice and hot. It's not overly sweet in my opinion it's just right the rum sauce with the pecans just top everything off!! I've had quite a few "bread puddings.", but this is a legit bread pudding. Wow what a great find that not too many know about. A friend led me to find this delicious Louisiana/Cajun joint. The atmosphere is full of "spooky" items and Louisiana references which was an awesome touch. The food: I ordered the Surf N Turf Po-boy which is half roast beef debris and half fried shrimp. This sandwich was big and the taste packed a punch too. The fried shrimp were perfect and even better when dipped in the remoulade. The roast beef debris was somehow better. Overall the sandwich was everything it should be and was bigger than I expected. The dessert: I was also able to try the bread pudding which was the best bread pudding I've had the pleasure of having. The pecans, caramel/rum sauce, and the pudding melded in a fantastic way. Everyone did the same except for one fried catfish basket. Food was VERY yummy and plentiful and fries were delicious, as always. All food was hot when it arrived at the table and all 5 orders came out at the same time. Bonus points! I really don't know how I haven't stumbled across this place in new food journeys across B'ham. This place is 100% legit and is going to become a new regular stopping off point! Arrived at about 11:00 and first thing you notice is the Cajun décor that this place is totally decked out in. Truly legit feel from the moment you step inside. We were the first ones for what would turn out to be a pretty large lunch crowd that steadily flowed through the doors for take out orders. Where to begin, the menu isn't ridiculous, there aren't 10 pages of selections to choose between. They have a great variety of sandwiches and po boys to compliment a few entrees and some specials that are listed on the board. Hard to not jump all over the smoked pork boudin balls .... 5 out of 5, especially when you dip them in the sauce they are served with. I had the muffuletta, which was spot on. Can be ordered as a 1/4 - 1/2 - or full size sandwich. Served warm and toppings are plentiful and on point. My friend had the fried shrimp po boy .... that's where it was at, If I could go higher than 5 stars I would. Some of the best shrimp either of us have ever had. Love, Love, Love. The Roug is a slice of The Big Easy in the heart of Birmingham. The converted home is an eccentric collection of memorabilia that pays homage to south Louisiana. I felt like I had been teleported to a secret corner of New Orleans. The Rougaroux offers traditional poboys, but what I really appreciate are their specialty combinations. They have created some bold poboys that they pull off with great confidence. Tonight I had the Rouxbon poboy which is their take on a Reuben sandwich. It was a chalkboard special, and not on the regular menu. The classic ingredients (Corn Beef, Sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing) are constructed on base of Leiidenheimer's French bread. This bread is imported from New Orleans, and it is amazing. The Rouxbon was epic. In New Orleans, enjoying a frozen daiquiri is almost as natural as stopping for a cup of coffee. The Roug offers several options, and I tried the Dark and Stormy. It was good and strong, and having a daiquiri in a styrofoam cup just felt right. One available option is Grapico and Vodka, and that must be an original. I like Grapico so I'll give it a shot next time. read more

Not residing in this area, some co-workers suggested Rougaroux as a hidden favorite. Being pescatarian, I went along and was surprised only by how wonderful the food is here. The charm of this literal hole in the wall establishment as immediate and only superceded by those who served us. Our meals were truly remarkable, with one of our Louisiana raised associates claiming the Bread Pudding was spot on and genuine to their New Orleans roots. Wow, my wife & I accidentally ended up at this pace because she had it bookmarked for our AL trips. We come here every year for Barber and like to stay somewhere around Birmingham. We ended up picking an Airbnb 3 mins away so our GPS took us here. We weren't mad though. The food was delicious & the drink even better. The prices were a little high for the quantity but the quality was good. I started with a mufletta because the cashier said it was a big one. I ended up going back to order the Boudin.
