If you're a vegan or vegetarian or just trying to limit your meat intake, this place is a great option in a town that seems to really love their meat. We both got the veggie crêpe of the day, which was tomato, feta and zucchini, and totally delicious. I had herb potatoes on the side. DH got a cappuccino, which looked amazing. It was all hot and ready within I want to say 10 minutes. Super cute space with a little stage where they have performances. Definitely will be back when we're in town! read more

The Staycation coffee (pistachio and orange) was very good, as was the Elderflower espresso tonic. The flavor on the pesto grilled cheese was good -- a little greasy and presentation was lacking; a little lettuce or balsamic would have made it seem better than a quickie home-lunch. The flavor list was promising and true, but for $11, you just want a grilled cheese that says and looks like a "wow." Would stop again for the drinks. Maybe we need to find better items in the menu. Cute little cafe with great coffee and delicious food. Had the cranberry crepe (seasonal crepe option) with a latte. The latte was great with a beautiful design included. Tends to get busy, and seating can be hard to come by. You do have to order at the front and they call your number to come get your food from the kitchen window. Only other criticism, is that it needs better signage out front. It is hard to find if you are from out of town. Overall though, cute coffee shop with good vibes. read more

A place with many personalities, this spot blurs the line between coffee shop, restaurant, and bar. Plenty of seating to spread out and work during the day or stop by for trivia with your friends at night. Food is worth stopping in. Just order a bit extra and some items are a bit on the smaller side. The winter beat salad is fresh and delightful. The grilled cheese is layered between beautifully baked and soft bread. The friends we were staying with brought us here for breakfast, and it did not disappoint. The breakfast biscuit sandwiches were delicious, definitely one of the best I've ever had. And the strawberry rhubarb scone? Incredible. So buttery and sweet, but not overdone. Coffee was also great. The owner was working, and he was so kind and knowledgeable! As he mentioned, the craft coffee world is small and knew about our favorite coffee shop in our town (across the country from Root Note). Went with a group of 5 and we were all very impressed by both the food and drinks. I was grateful for the vegetarian/vegan section of the menu. A cool spot to grab coffee in the downtown La Crosse area. Sincr it's downtown, you will need to find street parking. Atmosphere was really chill, the dining area was spacious and gave me an industrial, hipster vibe. Since it was cold out, I ordered a hot peach blossom white tea. Excellent tea, very fragrant, low astrigency. I would have loved to order some food, but apparently since it was a Monday they had a limited food menu due to low staffing (this was not listed on their website by the way so keep that in mind), so I just enjoyed my tea. The root note was the perfect place to stop for a little lunch and coffee. I was blown away by how tasty and cool their ube tea latte was and was equally impressed by the biscuit sandwhich. I upgraded the sandwhich to included mushrooms and onions and I'm so glad I did because the mushrooms were so tasty and complimented the sandwhich so well! First, the food was excellent. Crepes were spot on. The spritzer were not quite what we were expecting but we had never tried them before. I tried one of the pour over coffees- it took a while as it should. Almost every item is made in house with farm to table ingredients, even their pour over coffee blends. The people were extremely friendly and helpful. There is a stage set up for open - mic and music night which we did not attend, so the ambiance is very stereotypical of an urban coffee house. We LOVE Root Note! They always have the best, unique drinks. P.S. Thank you for always making drinks for us tea drinkers! I just had the seasonal drink with matcha, sesame, and white chocolate and it was great. They make so much in-house, which I love and they don't make their drinks too sweet like so many places do. The Definition is my husband's favorite, that homemade citrus and spice syrup...*chef's kiss* Their food is actually really good too. My husband always gets whatever their special crepe is. I like their chili and their harvest bowl. We've had the cocktails once and they were unique and really good, though I recall there were one or two we didn't love. Great coffee shop, and I don't even drink coffee. The chai latte is excellent. Add a biscuit or crepe for an even better visit. The space is large, the service is always friendly. This is one of the coolest coffee shops in the area. The set up of the shop and the atmosphere is perfect for meeting up with friends, studying or enjoying downtown La Crosse. If you don't like amazing crepes, coffee and kombucha avoid this place. The savory crepes are SO SO good. I'm sure the sweet ones are just as wonderful but we couldn't get past the combination of savory ingredients to order one! Worth checking out for coffee and food! Loved this place. Stopped in after a long travel morning and had an excellent oat milk cappuccino. The husband had a chocolate chip cookie that was to die for. I ordered a farro, kale, butternut squash salad with an egg and balsamic glaze I believe and it was so fresh and flavorful. Definitely what I needed while traveling. The flavors were good, though I felt that the waffle itself needed to be a bit more substantial. Then we had a veggie burger which it's awesome that they do a custom burger pattie and not just one of those standard plant-bases fake meats. It was decent. I would have preferred fries instead of chips, but that wasn't an option. Oh, the latte was pretty good. You get a pretty huge cup for $5. Maybe next time I'll have to check out the evening vibe. Good stop before hitting the road.

Nicolas David from the Voice has played here numerous times...and this tavern consistently draws acts from the Twin Cities. The best part of the whole deal is that I have never been charged a cover to get in and see good music. Sometimes, during shows, they serve free beer in the back from a keg...most likely PBR. Free music, and free beer? Is this heaven? Looking around the bar, enjoy the years and years of graffiti on the walls in the back of the bar. There are some really great artists in this town...and some fancy poets. The bathrooms are so full of markered writing, you could stand in there for a number of minutes just to take it in. I was impressed with the selection of crappy and not-so-crappy beer, and the service was great. The sound from the stage was great, and there was a little area where people would dance. I found the people watching here to be second to none...such an eclectic mix of society in here.

HIGHLY overpriced and severely mediocre "food". The amount of arrogant pretentiousness and smug snobbery is immeasurably high, and the overall uppity atmosphere is smothering to say the least. They ACTUALLY demand a $5 to $8 cover charge for "music performers" with nothing more than an acoustic guitar and the talent of the Tom and Jerry cartoon character Uncle Pecos Pest and the overpowering aroma of feet enwrapped in socks gone unchanged for a month and bathed in cat urine. One can get better food and ambiance from the supper at The Salvation Army about a mile and a half away at 223 N 8th St S, La Crosse, WI 54601. I recommend dumpster diving behind your local convince store with a 1990s style Discman with a Limp Bizkit CD stuck in it forever locked on "repeat song" playing their cover of the George Michaels song "Faith" for better food and music. This is what a coffee shop should be! Friendly, the best coffee (Kickapoo) I have ever had and friendly service. Their evening evens cover a wide range of music and entertainment and they have an interesting rotating beer selection. Did I mention their awesome crepes and the fact that they source locally and organically when possible. read more

I love the feel of the place. It's so chill and the staff are nice and easy to work with. Since discovering the Root Note, I've become addicted to their cinnamon sugar crepes and cold press coffee. Definitely a staple of Downtown La Crosse, and always worth a stop. read more

Love their crepes -- a great meal at any time of day. They also serve beer, also apparently at any time of day, although we didn't get any. A great place for all ages though -- has a causal coffee house atmosphere. read more

This place had a very inviting vibe and an old-fashioned/antique style interior decor. The building itself is old, so it was nice to see they kept some character. I was pleasantly surprised that they offered London Fog which is one of my favorite hot beverages of choice. I opted for the lavender sweetener, with almond milk, and it was perfect for that rainy morning. Not too sweet with a kiss of lavender in the background. Prices were comparable to other coffee shops in the area. Service was casual but friendly. No parking lot of their own since they are located in downtown, but you can choose to park in a nearby parking garage or find street parking.
