Kind of torn on this review. Grounded has a great patio and well-priced drinks. I just would say I haven't been super impressed by their drinks. I tend to prefer places that make some of their own syrups, etc. and from what I can tell, Grounded doesn't really do much from scratch, which is fine, just not my preference. Their drinks are usually good. I was kind of disappointed to see their even their seasonal specialty drink was not a homemade syrup. My biggest complaint is their cold brew is super weak/too watered down. Service is usually okay, cleanliness is usually okay as well. I do love their expanded hours, so we do stop here when others are closed. read more

From the service to the food, all around 10/10! Came in with my 3 kids and they loved it as well. They had a stash of table games to choose from. Came in clutch for me to enjoy my bfst. I went for the Margarita flatbread. On the menu board it was listed at $9.99. On a picture on the menu board it said $8.99. When I received the flatbread I thought it was to be baked. It didn't appear or taste baked. I also had a Cold Brew with a flavor shot. I am glad I had a coupon for $10 off my order as I wouldn't have wanted to pay for the flatbread. This was a very cute place, with lots of fun drinks on the menu. I ordered the special cherry matcha latte and the veggie egg sandwich. The latte was pretty good, but didn't taste much like cherry. But the sandwich left a lot to desire. The hummus was good, but I just thought it was ok overall. The panini I saw my friend get was not something I'd probably recommend to others. Super cute spot, right amount of cozy and lounge. Definitely a popular spot. I came in around 330PM on a Monday and most tables and seats were taken by students studying. Given, it is finals week and it is a college town. I had a floral iced coffee, I cannot remember the name.. I asked the barista for a recommendation on an iced coffee and she asked if I liked lavender and sweet? I said yes to the lavender and no to the sweet. I had mine prepared with vanilla Oat milk and honey and it was delicious. A little too sweet for my taste, I did mention to her I didn't like sweet, but she must have forgot. There was a lot of sugar and caffeine in that drink because by the time my date and I had finished our coffees. I was ready to go for a walk. So we decided to get wine and beer to bring us down from that caffeine rush. Lol Did I mention they also have alcoholic beverages? Yes, so all in all a really fun spot for studying or a date. We came in on a Wednesday morning and ordered a vanilla latte and iced watermelon matcha. The service was average, and the atmosphere was cute -- could definitely see myself frequenting the patio if I lived nearby! The drinks, however, did not live up. I'll preface this and say I accept full responsibility for not checking the prices carefully before ordering; I only glanced at them and assumed everything was in the $4-5 range. The vanilla latte was $4.50 and not bad but not anything special. The watermelon matcha was $6.95 for the matcha itself (16 oz.) and 95 cents for the watermelon, bringing it to ~$8, closer to $10 with tip. Having lived in LA, the Bay Area and now MSP, I'm not unfamiliar with $10 drinks, and I don't mind paying that price -- if the drink is good. Unfortunately, I'm surprised at the audacity to charge almost double the price of a vanilla latte for what I was served. I'll give it to them that the watermelon was an interesting touch and leaned more natural/cucumber than artificial/Jolly Rancher, but the lack of matcha flavor meant it kind of just tasted like cucumber milk :/ I'm not sure what matcha they use, but the pale color suggests it's either low quality or they aren't using enough per drink at all; in either case, I don't understand the price markup to get to $7 (without the watermelon), which is on par or more than specialty matcha cafes in San Francisco charge for deep green lattes. Overall, it isn't a bad spot to grab a coffee and work or chat, but the matcha is pretty much highway robbery, and you're much, much better off ordering your own matcha powder and making it at home. read more

Gave them a second chance and tried their Gourmet Grilled Cheese. I'll have to say it was a much better food experience than my first time around. The sandwich was solid, flavors were good. They used three different types of cheeses (cheddar, provolone, parmesan) and added tomato and bacon. I wouldn't necessarily call it "gourmet", it was tasty, but it's nothing special. We were in La Crosse overnight visiting family on part of our cross-country road trip and as I cannot function without coffee in the morning (I didn't want to mess with the hotel coffee maker during COVID), I was at the cafe front door at 6:55am for their 7am opening. The young girl working the opening shift must let people in early because there was already someone on the patio enjoying their drink and someone in the cafe ordering. I ordered an almond milk latte for myself and a half-caf drip with extra cream for my fiancé's mom, and we were both happy with our choices. Happy enough to come back 2 hours later for a quick breakfast before we hit the road!! Geoff got a banana, iced earl grey tea (they had 2 choices of pre-brewed ice tea) and a grilled panini sandwich that he said was real good once he pulled off some of the raw red onions (too many = too overpowering). I had the hummus egg sandwich (sliced hard boiled egg) and would eat it again for breakfast every morning. Highly recommend! I didn't notice if all of the tables were available inside the cafe, but the one that we sat at on the patio had a sign that said "due to COVID please limit to one hour." Great experience and if I'm ever back in La Crosse I'll be back for coffee/breakfast/lunch. **Patio is PET FRIENDLY!! So, what makes a five star rating for a coffee shop? First, its all about the coffee. Brewed, espresso, etc. They don't have to roast on site but it has to be top quality and made well Second, the vibe. WiFi, seating, character ( both the building as well as the people), location. No soulless stripmall or stand alone corporate outpost. Third, the food. It can't be reheated dreck trucked in frozen. It has to be made on site, be well made and be different. It doesn't have to offer a ton of options, but what they do sell has to be good enough that you come for just it. Grounded scores on all three. Five stars. read more

When I moved (temporarily) to La Crosse, I didn't have high hopes about finding a good coffee shop. I grew up in a smaller city, after all, and our options were typically "Dunkin Doughnuts" or "make it your dang self, y'all." Imagine my surprise, then, when I not only found a passable shop, but I found a shop that had great coffee, excellent staff, and... most importantly for this sad, bar exam studying soul... at atmosphere that was conducive to sitting and reading without feeling rushed. First, the coffee. If you're a casual environmentalist, it will please you to know that those drinking coffee onsite get OMG proper cups and glasses. Whether this is a conscious choice to preserve the environment or incidental to the fact that they serve some beers as well, I do not know... but having a mug instead of a plastic sippy cup is appreciated. Second, the staff. They know their coffee, but more importantly, they are always personable and friendly, even when the place is packed to bursting (which it is around exam time.) Part of the draw (aside from the caffeine) was that I knew I'd always have a pleasant experience. Finally, the atmosphere. The lighting is bright without being overbearing, there are couches and comfy xhairs available, and there's a patio for the two months that Wisconsin isn't covered in snow. In short? If you're in La Crosse this is THE coffee shop for you. Really if you ask me, it's the only option. Skip out of the chain Moka/Cabin Coffee and hit this local spot. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming-especially since the renovations. The coffee is specialty and you can taste the quality. I have had a range of drinks from black coffee, iced mochas, smoothies, chai lattes, tea, etc and have yet to be disappointed. I have also had egg sandwiches, muffins, scones and everything is made fresh-you can see if made if you like and you can absolutely tell how clean they keep their food prep station. I so appreciate this in a company. They now also have a new outdoor patio and indoor renovations which also brought in beer and wine. I didn't think Grounded could get better but it did! The owner is so personable and kind and cares about not only her shop, the customers but the city. And each choice she makes in regards to Grounded have so much thought behind them. The place is cozy and inviting with its open space and modern décor. It's the perfect place to curl up with one of their large cups of coffee or tea on cold Wisconsin winter's day. I hear they have around 9 months of those so bottoms up; it takes two hands to hold their cups! They offer a good variety of gourmet coffees, Espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, breves, flavor shots, and mochas iced, blended or hot. They have teas, and for the non-caffeine drinkers they offer cider, hot chocolate and even smoothies. We tried the coffee of the day, one hot and one iced Macadamia Mocha both delicious. My little miss had a chocolate, peanut butter and banana smoothie of which disappeared in minutes. On the food menu are their sweet things biscotti, scones and cookies, the perfect complement to any cup of coffee. Morning munchies consist of muffins, toast, oatmeal and bagels. Deli sandwiches, wraps and salads if you drop in for lunch and all served with a friendly smile. I came here on a quite weekday. The place was pretty full of people working and because it's currently winter the business had shoveled out their walk way. I got a mocha and it was really good. Good quality chocolate and espresso. I really enjoyed it. I also got a veggie wrap one of the only items on the menu sans meat... I think the business in La Crosse could work a little harder to provide some more options... I mean on the real this town has three colleges you gotta cater to your audiences (stop side rant) The place was really cozy and the hummus wrap was pretty tasty.
