Nope, nope, nope. Wanted to try another new (for us) place and drove across the causeway to try Rice Hat. I thought it was going to be chinese, but it's Vietnam/Chinese combined. Well, my "dish to compare" is sweet and sour chicken so that's what I ordered. My wife ordered the Shaken Beef. She also wanted some wonton soup. The chicken inside the fried pieces was so shredded it was actually fluffy inside. I guess if your teeth are painful during eating that's a good thing...but it left me...used to eating palpable meat pieces inside the S&S chicken, this was incredibly disappointing. It was almost flavorless. My wife's beef cubes/pieces were very chewy. By her description (and I tried one piece and concur) it was beef flavored chewing gum. I have to guess it was very well marinated low quality beef. Oh...and we had visitors of the fruit fly variety. They were quite frequent in visiting. The fairly pushy waitperson also put two extra meals on our ticket. Only after we went down the ticket and saw the extra entrés and did she come over to correct it. Left us wondering if she was trying to take advantage of a couple of older people. Speculation, but billing errors leave bad impressions. We won't be back. read more

Severely disappointed. Pho was bland and pad Thai was flavorless, needed soo much chili oil to be edible. This is clearly a restaurant for the people with no taste. Over priced af and too dark inside to even read the menu. Will definitely not be coming back! read more

We ordered rice to go and just wanted Chinese rice with egg and onion. The guy taking the order said he was probably going to get in trouble but put the order in. Next thing we know this lady comes out from the kitchen yelling at him in front of customers and everyone about the order because because she did not want to make a special order. We paid for a vegetable rice that would come with mushrooms, broccoli, zucchini, carrots, etc. yet were only asking for rice, onion, and egg like our son likes. The guy that took our order apologized profusely however, the lady that came out of the kitchen made such a scene we will not return. read more

Saw the decent star rating on Yelp and wanted to try it out for my Mom's birthday. Overall the place looked clean and they were jamming some old school pop music. Cute. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. We ordered crab rangoon and pork eggrolls (I don't eat either so no feedback for that). I ordered just water to drink and it tasted terrible. Not filtered - I guess just straight out of the tap? Not sure but I ended up ordering tea which was fine. Their drinking glasses were lil pitchers which were cute. We asked about the spice level and the waiter said there were no levels - it's just "however the cook feels like it that day". ‍ I got the chicken lo mein, TONS of food for $16. Flavor was good but too oily for me. When the check came around I noticed the cash vs card price. About $3 extra to use a card. Who carries cash these days? They don't have a modern POS machine so they took my card to the back to process. Their tipping suggestions were 15,20,25,30%. Overall, it was okay but I probably won't be going back. read more

The food is good but their prices are outrageous. How is it 40.00 for 1 person - shrimp fried rice, egg rolls and crab Rangoon? The fried rice is big serving but even then it's mostly rice and a few huge chunks of broccoli and few shrimp. I wish they used the smaller shrimp instead of the large one and they cut up the broccoli better read more

This restaurant appears very clean and orderly with nicely spaced tables and good lighting. I appreciated the space which is quiet enough to accommodate conversations. The service was prompt and helpful. I ordered the combination pho and found the broth very tasty and the meat was good. The noodles were a little sticky but I enjoyed them nevertheless. The crab Rangoon was fried very nice and the filling tasty. Iced tea was fresh of excellent quality. I will certainly be back again next trip to Portland! read more

This place has not been open very long, but it's already one of my favorite spots to go to when I am in the area. I have not had anything that is not delicious. The last visit I had the pork belly. This is a generous portion of crispy pork. Everything we have tried. There is fantastic. The servers are all great, and know the dishes inside and out. read more

To start off I've given this place a try 3 times to try different dishes before I wrote this review and I've decided all in all, it's kinda pricey but great Vietnamese cuisine especially for being in Portland. The pho was great! Possibly a competition with my top 5 pho joints in Houston, surprisingly (big competition out there). Double meat is a must although I wish they'd offer tendon. Anyways, it saves me a trip to Corpus for my pho craving (I used to frequent Lei's Kitchen) Second time around I've tried their beef chow fun noodles to-go. Again pricey compared to Houston prices and the noodles of their choice was 7/10. However I was content given their method of packing to-go was a nice bowl container that could be microwaved. Lastly I went there a third time to try canh chua (sweet and sour soup on their menu) and paired it with ca kho (braised fish I believe was what it was called on their menu). Neither was nothing to write home about however it was decent enough. The interior was nice and there was a bunch of people at 1pm on a Monday so I hope it continues to stay consistent or get better with everything. Happy eating! read more

First time here, and this place is really good! If you are in corpus it's a short drive over the bride into GP area. Ordering the lo main and dumplings this was enough for 3 people to share. The portions are plentiful and the taste is great. The restaurant it self is well decorated and the staff was attentive. Two visits in less than a month. 1st visit we had the Crab Rangoon (clearly made fresh), Lettuce Wraps, Lemongrass Chicken and Singapore Noodles, all were flavorful large portions. 2nd visit we had Crab Rangoon, Spring Rolls, Sesame Chicken, General Tso Chicken (pictured), Ramen (pictured), Beef Curry Rice (pictured). Again, all were delicious and generous portions. Service was good considering place was pretty full and only one waiter attending tables. Last visit, we were the only ones there so not fair to compare. Dining area was clean and provides a semi-quiet atmosphere. Drinks are served in small pitcher which caught us off guard our 1st visit but are a cute idea. Note, your straw fits right in the spout of the mini pitcher. Although, I wish some dishes were spicier, they have chili oil and Saracha available. Really hoping community supports this place! We will definitely be back! read more

First and last time at this restaurant today. Broccoli Chicken was OK, but other restaurants in the area make it better. You know how some people judge ethnic restaurants by certain dishes? If a restaurant has Shanghai Noodles I judge by that dish, a long-time favorite. The Rice Hat menu includes Shanghai Noodles so I ordered it. BLAND!! I mean other than a medium-curry flavor, it had nothing else going on. Didn't order it but was disappointed none of the Vermicelli BUN dishes came with a pork egg roll on top (that's what I'm used to). And FINALLY, we were appalled that they serve water in a small pitcher, yes a pitcher that substitutes as your glass in a time when cities in the area are encouraging restaurants to serve water in a small glass due to lakes 10% full. We watched them clear tables with nearly full pitchers; what a waste. At least they did not automatically bring us water, a point in their favor. And I agree with Ms Ruby O. and others - pricey. read more

We have eaten there three times now. All three cases the food was exceptional. Anyone can throw noodles and shrimp together, but it takes a special chef to spice it soooo subtly. The music playing at just the right volume. The prices are on the high side, but has not stopped me from returning. My only issue, 2 out of three times the service was ok, but not great. Each time we only order an appetizer and then share a main course. This last time, the server brought one main plate and a second plate. typically (and the other 2 times), the main plate and 2 smaller plates are placed. She (the server) seemed bored and uninterested in our meal. The same could be said about the previous server - bored. 2 of the dishes we had were: Garlic Eggplant. Absolutely delicious. needed a bit more rice, but what a fabulous meal! The sauce made the meal. Yaki-Udon. Noodles and Shrimp (other meats and tofu available). The noodles ere done perfectly. the shrimp a little tough (may have been frozen). Once again, the sauce, with hints of multiple spices, made the dish. we also got vegetable spring rolls and vegetable fried dumplings. Delicious. both the same price, but you get more for your money with the dumplings. I recommend this restaurant as long as you don't expect the wait staff to match the prices. read more

I got the chicken Pho to-go. Ordering on the phone was quick, easy, and the staff were friendly. The flavor of this Pho was delicious! I didn't bother to add any hoisin or soy sauce; it had a lovely anise flavor with a richness that made me want to sip the whole bowl. There was a generous portion of noodles and toppings (jalapeño, bean sprouts, cilantro) and the only one missing was basil. I'll definitely be back to try the dine-in experience. read more

I read the previous reviews, and decided to give this place a try while here in Portland. I was not disappointed. The Crab Rangoons are simply amazing. The flavor is like that I have NEVER had at any Chinese restaurant in all of my 60 years. They are obviously FRESH and served with this wonderful sweet ginger dipping sauce. We shared while there and took back to the hotel the Combo LoMain again super fresh and tasty. They are closed on Sunday otherwise we would be coming back tomorrow. read more

We were the only people in the restaurant and all the workers were talking at a table. I had to use the restroom after ordered but the male restroom was locked. After waiting for a few minutes I asked an employee if they just keep the restroom doors locked but she said no. The hostess knew I was waiting for a long time but chose to ignore me. After our food was served my wife unlocked the door with a coin and nobody was in the restroom so we packed our full plates to leave without a tip. read more

The food is stellar, no question about that. That Ramen, the Pho, the Yaki Udon. All terrific. Where the Rice Hat falls short is the owner. After six months of going there, we complained about a dish we ordered that was nearly $20.00 that was bland, tasted like the shrimps were frozen or old and generally kind of gross. We sent it back to the kitchen, they gave her something else. The bill arrived and I noticed they charged us for the dish we didn't like. I politely inquired as to why something we ordered that wasn't eaten and was sent back was charged. The owner came over. Asked "What is the problem" I said "We got charged for food we didn't eat and didn't like". So she said "What was wrong with it" we described what's in this review above. Her exact words: "I cannot comp you for food you just don't like. There's nothing wrong with it. It's supposed to be bland". I stated we'd been coming here for six months pretty loyally and I didn't understand what the big deal was. She then asked us to take our "shit and get out of here". My wife exclaimed "wow really" to which the owner got in her face and said "Yes, really get out and don't ever bother coming back". So I tried to talk to the girl at the front and she said "Don't talk to her she can't help you, leave now, goodbye!". Then she started screaming at the top of her lungs that we aren't welcome there anymore and that they don't just comp food for people here. In front of 3 or 4 other tables of diners. I said to her "Look, lady it's nothing personal ...she doesn't like the food. You don't have to get some mad about it" that apparently enraged her more and she walked quickly towards me and started yelling at me to leave. read more
