I lived here when the building first opened in 2017, and at the time it truly felt like a standout place to live. It was a beautiful, well maintained property and excellent amenities. When I first lived there it was 5 stars by the time I left it was 2.5 stars. One of the highlights was the attention to detail when it came to resident perks. They offered complimentary Nespresso coffee, cold brew coffee on tap and occasional treats like donuts and pizza parties, which added a nice touch to everyday living. The onsite maintenance team was available 24/7 and was always responsive, which made a big difference in terms of convenience and peace of mind. The security staff was also reliable and professional, contributing to an overall feeling of safety within the building. At the beginning, everything felt elevated and well managed, making it a very enjoyable place to call home, but when I left the trash room was disguisting, amenities from no coffee, garage door always broken. read more

The hallways are always dirty, you have to pay for visitor parking (used to be free), also have to pay for your own parking spot (also used to be included), things are constantly being stolen from the garage and nothing is done about it. The elevators are wet with dog urine pretty often and the numbers denoting the floors are painted with white out. I've just signed my third year lease here at The Rey. I love everything about the well appointed building of course but it's so much more than that. The tenants are warm and friendly and the management makes living here so pleasant, easy and comfortable. They are all very professional but at the same time you want to share your coffee, which is free in the lobby, with them. I love the ease of the convenient location directly off the 163 and 5 freeways. The views are phenomenal as well. I obviously highly recommend The Rey! read more

A guest having to pay $6-12 for parking to come by and pick it up is insane. Also, we were gone from the parking spot for max 15mins came back and had a ticket. You're just trying to make money every way you can. This place is trash. When your tenants are paying for parking and a parking permit does nothing for them, it's not much of a permit. A 30 minute window is what most places will give you even downtown. read more

So I lived at the Rey for a year -- I waited a while to write the review because most apartment reviews you'll see are either from initial tours or right after move-in (the 'honeymoon period'). Now I've got a good sense of what it's really like living there. Read for more: The Tour: I scheduled a tour of the building -- that went fine. It was a bit behind schedule but my leasing agent (not going to call out any names) showed me around, showed me a couple of units and told me about specials they had. She answered all my questions but it seemed like some answers were just made up. For example, when I asked if there were ANY fees besides strictly just utilities, rent, and parking I was told "none". Of course, that ended up not being true -- there's other trash and concession fees tacked onto your monthly bill. Move In: Move in was a hassle. I got my keys the day I moved in which was smooth enough. However, my leasing agent gave my movers a hard time. They knew her before they even got to my building (not a good sign). Their truck didn't fit into the loading bay so they parked on the street in front of the building. She came up to my apartment during move-in to tell them they couldn't park on a public street. After that back-and-forth, I had to move a 20 foot sea kayak so I put it behind the trash dumpsters in the garage where it was in nobody's way. I went to the store to grab some straps so I could load the kayak onto my rental car and get it out of there. I instantly got a call from my leasing agent asking why it was there and that it needed to be removed or that she would have it removed. Sort of annoying. My apartment wasn't super clean on move-in either. The baseboards had a TON of dust, my garbage disposal wasn't working, and the walls and ceilings were still scuffed. The balcony was filthy too. The Apartment: I have a unit on the top penthouse floor. The furnishings are slightly above average but nothing crazy nice. The space itself is large and well laid-out. There is a lack of storage space because this building has HVAC units inside of the apartment as opposed to the outside because of the ducting. The balcony is spacious as well. The appliances are OK -- they're not real stainless steel (surprising in a penthouse unit) and the controls on my cooktop are so faded that I can barely read them. Overall, I like my unit but I don't love it -- there's just too many small things that bother me about it. The HVAC system also produces a TON of dust even though I spent my own dime upgrading the filters. The Building: The Rey is a luxury building ran like an average one. The rooftop is nice but that's about it. Outside of that, there's just the main lobby area with some working space. Hallway floors are dirty and it's clear that pet urine and stains are everywhere. You'll often find pet feces and urine in the elevators. It doesn't help that the elevators are awfully slow. The hallways and elevators are not air conditioned either, so whatever temperature and humidity it is outside, it is inside too. This is miserable during heatwaves. You'll break into a full-on sweat just going down to your car or the lobby. The garage is one of the worst parts of the building. Parking spaces are super tight and the entrance/exit of the garage is a literal 90' angle so it is hard to get in or out with a larger vehicle. The scrapes on the walls will tell you enough. The garage door was also broken for a good 3 months and kept open 24/7. Instead of having it fixed, building management had 'security' monitor the garage. Half the time they weren't even there and homeless people from the street waltzed around the garage. Someone broke into my locker and stole $700 worth of tents, beach chairs, camping equipment, and my wagon. The package room is also a complete mess. There isn't clear enough instruction for delivery drivers so half the time the packages don't make it to the lockers. Management doesn't listen to concerns either. They block negative posts. My experience with the leasing team at this apartment complex was deeply disappointing and, frankly, disheartening. From the beginning, I was met with subtle but persistent microaggressions that made the leasing process feel uncomfortable and unwelcoming. During my initial inquiry, the leasing agent immediately assumed I was only interested in the cheapest unit available, and it was only after I told her my preferences she recommended floor plans. This assumption felt not only dismissive but also rooted in a biased perception of who I am. It set a negative tone for the rest of the interaction. The property is undeniably beautiful so I submitted my application....After submitting my application, I never received a follow-up call to update me on the status until 3 days after and by then I found another building to live in. read more

DON'T DO IT!!! MY CAR WINDOW IS BROKEN, AND A HOMELESS WAS SLEEPING INSIDE THAT I HAD TO KICK OUT ON MY OWN because the security guard was peacefully resting during working hours. After living at the Rey for 3 years, I am livid at the building's recurring security issues and safety hazards. 1. The parking entrance has not been working since August 8th. Anyone can enter the building and access the garage. The homeless will break into your car and storage. The property management will not be responsible for ANY OF IT. At least 4 car windows smashed on one floor on the same day. 2. I submitted 4+ work orders to fix the water in my bathroom sink because it stinks, and they never set it. The maintenance manager sent me a message to add Clorox every morning and keep the water running. (When Chlorine bleach inhalation can cause discomfort and coughing, leading to acute or long-term chronic chemical pneumonitis). 3. There is constant work construction at the Symphony Towers and B Street. The workers will directly stare through your windows and make you feel uncomfortable. Why pay for lovely floor-to-ceiling windows when you need to have them close during the day? It's false marketing to pay for "Simple Elegance, Urban, Modern" with a concierge and "24/7 security" when they can't even bear to repair the parking garage door, have tenants suffer from vandalism, incompetent security guards, a property manager that lacks empathy and doesn't even take responsibility. read more

Tina is the ONLY reason I don't like this place. She is super dismissive and passive aggressive. I've brought it up plenty of times and even logged specific incidents and she's still working here lol. Some employees also agreed with me, and by the looks of the past reviews alot of people have the same opinion. I swear if she wasn't working here or if we had someone else in charge I know for a fact me and probably 80% of the residents would instantly feel the difference in management. My past neighbors have even told me she's the reason they found somewhere else to live. read more

So this was my second time living at The Rey in a 5year period. Both times a year. The Rey has always been an amazing place!!! They have been consistent with cleaning and management. They have regular activities and sponsored events. The rooftop area is always clean and the pool on that level always in good condition. The staff (assistant manager Matthew Wolfe) was there years ago and it was amazing to see him again! He is amazing, always positive and always has great hugs. They are so lucky to have him. The manager is amazing and always willing to answer questions and help resolve issues!!!! The cleaning staff was the same cleaning staff from 5yrs ago (although they have made some recent changes in cleaning staff as the veterans seem to be retiring. As a first-time renter, the leasing staff made the entire leasing and move-in process a breeze. McKenzie was great, super professional, and helpful with giving clear instructions per email on what was needed. Following those instructions, I was able to get everything set up without issue. McKenzie also made the move-in day easy by reserving the dock and one of the elevators so I could move my belongings up to my room (even going the extra mile to get the locked elevator back after a tenant took it to a different floor). I did have an issue with one of the cabinet drawers not sliding correctly and the staff responded to it super quickly by sending up a repairman who could fix it the next day. This leaves me confident that they will be quick to respond to any issues I may have in the future (fingers crossed). As for the amenities, I was a bit bummed to have to pay an initial fee for the package lockers, but after having a few Amazon packages delivered, I am super happy that they exist. Definitely a peace of mind that no one is going to be running off with my packages, and the process to get the packages themselves is super convenient. The building itself is great, in good condition and the elevators are smooth and fast. I love the view from my apartment and haven't had any issues with noises from the neighbors. Overall, I've had a great experience with the staff and the facilities here at The Rey, and I hope that continues throughout the rest of my lease! read more

We toured this complex with Matthew recently and were impressed by not only the complex itself but the care that Matthew took to show us around and thoroughly explain things to us. He was very patient with all our questions (we were making a cross country move so everything was stressful except this process). He really took his time to show us all the amenities, his favorite spots in the neighborhood and was great when I called again with even more questions. I've called this place home for a little over a year so time to make a review. I would say it's not a horrible place but it's a building in transition. The trajectory is going down from luxury to a step above Vera Cortez Hills. Think college dorm days. Swarms of giggling girls laughing in the halls so you can't sleep at 1am. Parties of like 10-15 screaming children. Thats the reason for the mass exodus. Like 40 plus units available. It's because month after month you see the tenants and building devolving and everyone is trying to get out fast. The good thing is if you're 18-23, like drinking games, including kegs, this building is for you. Get a roommate, get some cute IKEA furniture and live downtown! Most everyone else is migrating to other buildings with better ventilation, security and elevators. Yet again not bad just not this luxury building and less so month after month. The difference has been really crazy in the last 6 months. I was in the elevator with another tenant last month as someone had too much to drink and was crying as her boyfriend dumped her. After she left we both looked at each other and I was like. When's your move out date and we both said our respective date and busted out laughing. read more

This is trash. A guest to pay $12 for 0-2 hours. When is your landlord looking after you with this. Won't renew nor would I recommend. Already paying for parking as a resident and top of that as a two bedroom apartment with two people living here. We only have one parking spot while you can see multiple empty spots available. Still have to be on a list and wait months. Won't renew with visiting other friends downtown with better living arrangements their landlords show that other rental properties take better care of their residents. read more

If you're looking for a luxury experience, well-trained staff, clean units, or a place where safety is prioritized, I would not recommend living at The Rey. My experience from prior to moving in, to after moving out has been nothing but disappointing and unprofessional. To start, upon signing the lease, the lease was wrong in regards to billing for parking. Management hung up on me 2x purposely because I "needed to sign the lease." My question pertained to the fact that the charge was wrong and if I signed the paperwork, I would be agreeing to the wrongfully assessed fee. I had to have a friend call on my behalf and 3-way me in to get someone on the phone, and asked for a manager who agreed that the fee was wrong but that I would "need to sign the lease to speak with anyone further." Ummm so if people are touring and they have a question, do you just refuse to answer unless they sign the lease...? No. So, why was a phone call treated differently? The morning I received my keys, my unit was filthy. There were dead bugs in each room, dust, the floors were so gross that the bottom of my feet were completely black and looked like I walked on the streets of downtown barefoot. There were marks all over the walls (clearly not re-painted), the mirrors looked like they had not been cleaned in over a month with water marks, the sinks were dirty, and so much more. There were specks of black dust as well, looked maybe like rodent feces. The manager,"Tina," came up and immediately said that this unit was clean to a luxury standard. She bent down, brushed her fingers on the floor and there was dust and white specs on her fingers. How do I know? She put them in my face right after, thinking it wasn't anything. I backed away and said "what are those white marks and dust then?" and she said "It's from the paint." She told me to notate any issue with the unit and that anything that was notated we wouldn't be charged for. Cleaners were supposed to come and re-clean and no one ever came. Apparently there was an invoice billed yet no proof. anything noted on that inspection must not be charged for on move out, but guess what? We were! We were charged for cleaning. Our unit was cleaner when we moved out than moving in. There were several "enhancements" to the building while we lived there. One being all of the elevator fobs. One evening, I went to the grocery store and the elevator would not work. It was nearly 10pm and I parked 7 floors underneath my unit. Stairs weren't feasible. I parked to guest parking so that I could walk up 2 stairs and would move my car in the morning. The next day, "Tina" was standing next to my car and started YELLING that my car couldn't be there and that next time it would be towed, without even asking why I had parked there, Meanwhile, she walked away and LOCKED HER OWN PARKED CAR LOCATED IN THE THE FUTURE RESIDENT PARKING. Excuse me? Shouldn't management be leading by example? The move out: We asked to renew our lease but noticed all other units were several hundred less than ours. We asked for a price reduction. They decreased us by $100 and then put our unit on the market the next day for $400+ less than what we were currently paying. Not sure why anyone wouldn't want to keep a current resident in the unit other than they didn't want me to live there, I am honestly not sure what to think about this one. While I was not a fan of management nor the safety of the building (homeless constantly breaking in, shattered the entire glass front door, car break ins, the garage gate didn't work for majority of my lease term), it was located close to my job, which was my ONLY motive in staying. After assessing my move out fees, I was wrongfully charged for cleaning with the documentation of my move in inspection and photos, and the office has refused to speak with me over the phone even though I have called 4x just today as well as been back and forth all day via email with the team. There was also a lack of professionalism within the staff. The same manager came up my roommate during business hours and asked for information regarding certain people up on the roof over that weekend while my roommate was studying in the lobby, to which she answered that she had not been on the roof. Just because management thinks they know who is friends in the building does NOT give them that right. We are not security. This was inappropriate to ask. Take this as you wish. I try to be helpful to others. I leave great reviews where opportunity arises for exceptional services, and unfortunate reviews like this that only detail my own experiences, but if you ask anyone in passing who lives there (all the residents are extremely tight-knit), my experience wasn't far off. I don't feel it's right to treat people this way, but maybe I just hold others to a higher standard. read more

I have lived in The Rey for a couple of weeks now, and after getting fully settled in wanted to leave a comment on the experience. I had been to the building a handful of times over the years to enjoy the rooftop amenities with friends that lived in the building. Having lived in Vantage Pointe across the street many years back the SkyDeck is much better equipped and actually on the roof (22cd floor). The views up there are amazing. All of this is to say that when I looked for a place to move recently, I looked in East Village, Downtown propper, and Little Italy...everything reasonable (like Pinnacle at the Park) was in a really bad location and everything that would compare to The Rey or nicer was quite a bit more expensive for space/location. With Coronavirus, I did everything online. I have to say that Norelle was amazing...I had quite a few questions through the process, and she was always quick to respond and incredibly helpful. She sent me pictures of multiple units and answered all questions that I had. Even as I have moved in and am settled she has been amazing to support with follow up questions and getting any loose ends sorted. To sign a lease and only show up to the building the day of to get the keys can be a bit unsettling, but Norelle made it incredibly smooth. When I showed up it was less than five minutes; everything was ready and my unit was in great shape. I am in a studio with a balcony (a3a) and it is a great space, with a well-sized balcony. I face west and get some really great afternoon/evening sun, and have a bit of a view of the ocean and the Coronado bridge (not direct but still solid). The value for the space is incredible and the amenities are fantastic. It is probably important to note that the vibe of the building is really social...I came from a condo building down by Petco park, and as nice as my neighbors were, I didn't really get to meet or know anyone in the 4+ years that I lived there, and in the past two weeks, I've already run into old friends and met/interacted with new people. The vibe is friendly and chill...this is a great place to go especially if you're new to the city and want somewhere to connect with new people. I suppose time will tell how the overall experience will be, but out of the gate, The Rey rightfully earns 5 stars and is a solid contender if you're looking for a great, modern space with chill/friendly vibes from staff and neighbors. read more

My friend rents a condo here at The Rey. I was invited over to hang out for a bit and was amazed at how luxurious this place was and all the amenities they provide to their residents. The Sky Deck is spacious and has a nice sized pool as well as several bbq grills. Perfect for a small get together. There are TVs too! The place reminds me more of an upscale hotel. There's parking available around the building as well as garage. There's drinks, teas and coffee as well as beer on tap! If I didn't own a place already or was even looking for a place to stay, this would be it. I forget how fun single living was. There are views for days from every vantage point and condo here. From Balboa Park to the Coronado Bay Bridge. The premium price is well worth it. Can't wait to come back again soon... read more
