Food is fairly priced, and the quality and variety of food is really good for bar food. I also like that this is the only place on campus to get a classic burger and bar food but also have the option to try their more adventurous bowls and burgers, hence the turkey burger with avocado. The patty on my burger was flavorful and far from dry. For $10 it was a good size and loaded with avocado! Plus the carrots on the side were also very generous. Yesterday, February 3rd, I got food poisoning from a dinner I had at the rat. I had a chicken quesadilla and a side of Cajun fries. I went home with an upset stomach, but I didn't think anything of it until I woke up with a stomach ache, and all other symptoms of food poisoning developed. I think the rat needs to be more careful with their preparation of their chicken. The automatic door opener as you enter was not operational. The Rat sits beside the lake and has a scenic view if you care to sit outside. There is an outside bar that is operational when there is warmer weather plus about 10/ 6 seat covered swings that adds a nice touch. They also have a happy hour! I recommend this place. The prices are also reasonable. I believe they have a pool table upstairs and lots of televisions both up and downstairs. A good place to stop prior to a UM basketball or baseball game. I contracted a very bad case of food poisoning on January 27th at this location on the University of Miami campus (1330 Miller Dr, Coral Gables, FL 33146.) We had dinner there at around 5:30 pm before attending a concert at Gusman Hall. I had Buffalo chicken & empanadas. Both dishes were awful, and no one in our party could finish what we ordered. I was hit with terrible stomach cramps on the drive home to Fort Lauderdale, followed by 24 hours of vomiting and extreme diarrhea. I felt shaky and had chills. This has never happened to me before. I am writing because I think someone shiuld check to make sure that the food is kept at proper temperature, especially the chicken. I emailed the manager on the following day and never received a reply. I also emailed the Dade County Department of Health, who directed me to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation to file a complaint. read more

The Rat is a fun and lively sports bar conveniently located on the UM campus. The spot is perfect to hang out with a group of friends or watch a football game. They host karaoke nights on a weekly basis and football watch parties for their own sports team as well as NFL teams. I always order the chicken posse pita. It is grilled chicken, chopped lettuce, and diced tomatoes in the pita along with a sauce of your choice. The sweet chili sauce is awesome! The meals also come with a side and they have really amazing french fries. The upstairs section of the restaurant is also cool to check out. From live bands and Trivia Tuesdays, to Hurricane Sports Watch Parties and entertaining student programs, the Rathskeller has something for everyone at the U! Opened in 1973, "the Rat" consists of a variety of bar bites and local brews. The establishment is made up of two stories, the second floor is primarily used for playing billiards over a few cold ones with friends. The first floor is comprised of a variety of sitting arrangements and has an insane surround sound system alongside a display of large flat screen TVs. As per my order, I went with the Kitchen Posse Pita with a side order of curly fries. The Kitchen Posse Pita is made using good quality ingredients, starting with the chicken being grilled to a perfect char. As the chicken is being cooked, freshly chopped lettuce and tomatoes are placed on top of the pita bread shell. Once cooked, the chicken is layered on the pita and topped off with your choice of one of their signature sauces: Memphis BBQ, Hot, Korean BBQ, Honey Mustard, or Sweet Chili. I chose the Korean BBQ which was tangy & sweet! As for the curly fries, they were great! Although I'll admit the regular fries are pretty bomb by comparison. Overall, the experience was amazing, the food was great, the service was fast, and the price was low! With just $5.99, I left the Rathskeller feeling fuller than a rat leaving a poorly secured food cellar. Time to update my review of this UM landmark post-renovation. So yes, it's not the same as the one that stood for years and years, creating countless memories for thousands of University of Miami students. That familiar musty, beer spilt on the floor, greasy food frying smell is gone. The walls aren't full of memorabilia, and MOST DISAPPOINTEDLY, those sweet and addicting fries are gone. Former Rat lovers need not be discouraged, however. The millions of dollars spent in creating the new Student Activities Center (where the Rat is now housed) was invested properly to create a new Rat that, while a lot cleaner, still preserves the essence of our old beloved space. The food is the same (besides the aforementioned fries) and the beer is even better. They now have a bounty of beers on draft and an outside bar in addition to the one insides. After all, let's be honest, there are plenty of places to eat on campus, we come here because it's the only spot with alcohol. On NFL game days, they scatter the different games throughout the inside and fans will gather around the TV showing their prospective team. They also have a HUGE screen front and center that will show the biggest game of the day (or the Dolphins game if that's on). Since the new inside space is bigger, it can fit more spectators and there are more seating options on the second floor and even couches down below. Outside, the gliders are still in tact so that's where you'll still find me swingin' the day away with a buffalo chicken quesadilla in hand and a pitcher of beer keepin' cold. read more

I have a skewed experience of this place - I'm here on the weekends for class and group work, and almost never during the week when there are events and games. Nonetheless, I find myself choosing the familiar Rat combo of a burger, fries, and drink over the likes of Subway and convenience store sandwiches. It's not the best burger, and I wish the vegetation was more than a floppy piece of lettuce, but it's filling and $8. The employees are efficient and usually friendly, and the food comes out hot and cooked to order. Fries are the chunky kind, which dip perfectly into the Frank's sauce that they have in a pump next to the barbecue and ketchup sauces. On the last few weekends, something has been out - ketchup, mustard, or barbecue (never Frank's, luckily) - which has affected my friends' enjoyment of their meals, but I chalk it up to being a slow weekend. Pitchers are affordable, jumbo TVs are literally everywhere, the seating area is spacious and comfortable, and on the rare occasion the patio is open, then the view over the lake is gorgeous. I hate issuing such a low rating to anything related to my beloved alma mater. However, I went to school when the original Rat was in service. The new Rat just does not compare by any means. A couple of friends decided to watch the season opener at this new Rat as it had just opened. Hoping to relive some old college memories, I thought it was brilliant. Wrong. The Rat has turned cold. Figuratively & literally. The first description that came to mind was pretentious. Appropriately Miami, but it lost the appeal of a dive-y getaway I used to call home when I would skip classes for a pitcher of Yeungling & shooting pool. Service at the registers used to be slow but damn. My friends waited an entire quarter of football to be served a bowl of ice cream with a microwaved brownie. Forreal?! Sadly, students will never get to experience the warm environment that once was a legendary monument to the university's campus. Having attended UM for college and as a current UM law student, I can safely say that the Rat is an extension of my home. I have shared countless lunches, dinners, and happy hours both at the old and new Rat over the years with some of my best friends. I rate the Rat 5 stars not only because I have been here a million times, but also for its great college atmosphere and satisfying food. The Rat has "UM" written all over it. The new Rat, though smaller, has great ambiance both inside and outside. The floor to ceiling windows inside overlook the UM pool and diving boards, as well as Lake Osceola. The patio is full of the Rat's signature gliding tables which are perfect for lunch or happy hour with groups of people. Needless to say, the people watching-inside or out-is fantastic. As for the food, I recommend the burgers (my personal favorite is the Black & Bleu), the buffalo chicken salad, or the wings. There are also great specials on beer pitchers during happy hour. Like any other Cane, I miss the old Rat, where I watched the 2008 election, several away FSU games, comedians, and spoken word performances. However, the new Rat has, at least temporarily, filled the old Rat's shoes. The new Student Activity Center, scheduled to open in a few years, will house UM's third rendition of the Rat, and I am excited to see what that will be like. read more

Oh (new) Rathskeller, where do I even begin with you? For starters, is it pathetic that I'm a "regular" when I graduated years ago? Think that's the case in point... If you're a Cane, you can't help but come back here! There are glimpses at the nostalgia that used to bring alums back to the original Rat-- the collages of photos of unfortunate clothing choices and even worse hairstyles, the throwback posters, etc. But the main point is that grabbing a glider and overlooking the lake, even at this shiny new Rat is a little blast from the past we all need here and there. The menu has stayed pretty much the same over the years- typical bar food and an assortment of beers on tap, though it's all gotten pricier (but really what about UM hasn't?). As a former employee, I've tried just about everything but the Kenny's Buffalo Chicken sub and the burgers remain high on my list of recommendations. Be warned-- they use a different type of French fries now. Also as a former employee, I warn you if you're looking for fast food service, go to the food court. It gets busy and complaining doesn't make food cook any quicker! Kick back, get a beer and some free popcorn and enjoy pretending you're an undergrad again without a care in the world except what you're going to wear to the Grove tonight. I don't know why it has taken me so long to review the Rat considering I spend a good amount of time here these days. Last night, between classes a group of 9 of us went to grab some dinner and I realize how awesomely convenient this place truly is. First of all they have beer, hard to find on a campus, which makes the world of a difference when you just got out of class at 5pm and have a three hour night class at 6:25. Enough time to sneak a pitcher in, maybe two if you are well accompanied. They also give the law students free beer and fries every other Thursday (yes...needless to say I've made friends with lots of them) Secondly, they have $2.99 lunch deals, that include a bottle of water (or a soda for an extra buck), and that are quite filling. Their menu is pretty extensive, with veggie options, all kinds of finger foods, burgers, grills, salads, pitas (my favorites are the pats veggie or the posse) chop-chops, etc. I love the fact that most of their sitting is outside and you can opt from a regular table, rocking booth, or now the recent addition of some comfy couches. They often have live music playing inside, and even though some might find it inconvenient, I kinda like the way you order and pick up your food if you are sitting inside. The service outside is a toss up, sometimes you'll get really good servers, other times you'll get the newbies that have never been in the service industry but are trying to have a job in college- types. Come here all the time for lunch or wine after a long day of classes...it gets the job done. The food is not the healthiest but is pretty good. I usually opt for the Buffalo chicken salad (with balsamic vinaigrette instead of blue cheese and without cheese altogether) or the chicken fingers. One of my girlfriends is a huge fan of their grilled cheese sandwiches. They have outdoor seating which is usually pretty full, especially when the weather is nice. The Rath is located right next to the pool, literally, and close to the food court as well. It's pretty small if you ask me and the wine list is not the greatest (I need to talk to someone when I'm there next, they can do much better!!!!) They're mainly a beer place, but they can scrounge up some mini-bottles of vino for you if that's what you're feeling. To be honest I am shocked by the amount of good reviews for this place. I'm a student so I pass this place every day and have eaten there several times. The ambiance is pretty good as they have a lot of outdoor seating looking at Lake Osceola and it's also nice if you just want to relax and have a beer while on campus. Unfortunately, that's where the positives stop for "The Rat". The service has been terrible every time I've gone (more than 1 hr to finish lunch of just wraps and quesedilla's) and the food is average at best and poor quality college food at worst. The only reason to go here is if you're not pressed for time and just want to have a beer with friends near the lake OR if you are just so sick of eating the chartwell garbage in the food court on campus. read more

I literally do not even know where to start on this one. As a former employee, I was always asked "What would you recommend?" Talk about a hard question! I have tasted everything on the menu and am a HUGE fan of everything on it. This food is better than any sports bar I have ever been too and this place has pretty much everything you could crave. The hardest part of my shift (besides dealing with irrational drunks) was to decide what I wanted to eat after! I finally settled and answered that question with "Well what are you in the mood for?" and narrowed it down from there. My go-tos are the quesadillas, Chicken Super Sub and of course the posse pita (with hot sauce and their addictive ranch). The best part about this place (besides having the cheapest pitchers in Miami) is the ambiance. The counters are sticky, the servers could care less and everyone is there to have a good time. This is a campus Cheer's bar, everyone knows your name. It harnesses the Canes spirit like no other bar ever could and is the heartbeat of the campus surrounding it. This is where my best memories of college were made and where I met the love of my life. Coming to the Rat on the last day open evoked all my wonderful memories I had in my undergraduate days at UM. I chugged a beer in honor of the Rat. And then.... Torrential downpour made the masses run for any swinging chair, umbrella, or overhang they could find. Many of us held strong and my friends and I paid for it; we were soaked. They closed the patio due to lightning and thunder oooooohho ooooo oo. The lines inside were long to get beer, but that did not stop us loyal brethren. As the rain withered, we stalked the rockers and mission accomplished the cops went away and we were rocking away while drinking our beer. Took a trip over to The Rathskellar on University of Miami's Coral Gable campus on Thursday evening. We ordered some curly fries and a pitcher of beer. Quality This was far from my first trip to The Rat and since I was not really looking for a full meal, just ordered my personal favorite snack here, curly fries. The curly fries are delicious, especially with some honey mustard. They have the perfect amount of salt so they go great with a beer. Quantity The basket of fries is a good size, perfect for two people to share. The pitcher of beer is standard size enough for about four glasses. Value The Rat is very reasonably priced. Unfortunately we had already missed Happy Hour so it wasn't a great deal, but still very fair. Ambiance The Rathskellar is located in the newer Student Activities Center, right off the Lake Osceola. Inside is a large high ceiling seating area as well as a jumbo sized television with several smaller televisions surrounding it. Also, inside is where you can order food to go if you are in a rush. You will also find a staircase to upstairs, which is often chained off for events, but has plenty of bar games including a pool table to enjoy. However, as long as the weather is nice, it definitely is better to sit outside in one of the gliders. The gliders are booths on wheels that sway back and forth as you eat or drink. There also is a large bar outside with seating and some high top tables as well. Even though you would think they would stick with the UM radio station, the music stays away from indie and tends to be a mix of popular new songs and popular classic songs. Crowd As one could probably guess the crowd at the college campus bar tends to be college students. On a Thursday night towards the end of the semester it was pretty packed especially with seniors who are ready to graduate. The other people you will find here are law and graduate students and lots of study groups, sometimes even with a professor in tow. Service The staff is made up mostly of students so you will often find them hanging out with tables of kids they know. However, there is usually a bunch of people working so its not hard to flag someone down to help you. Parking Make sure if you head over you check out the parking enforcement hours on the signs near the lot you park in. If you do not have any luck with the lots you can typically find meter parking around the edges of the campus. Extra The Rathskellar is a college campus driven bar and it is exactly what you would expect it to be, a hangout for college students. However, it is not a bad place to have a drink on a nice day as the view is quite beautiful and the food and drinks can be cheap. read more

The Rat at UM is a very unique experience. First, UM spent a lot of money renovating the place, and it shows. The inside is really nice with lots of leather sofas and a ton of TV's to watch if you choose to sit inside. I rarely sit inside, but when I do I appreciate the effort that went into making sitting inside more palatable. Second, I insist if you come here that you sit outside. Sitting in one of those glider canopies while viewing the water is a really nice experience. It's one of the few places where I'd rather sit outside. Third, everything you get here will be mediocre. There is absolutely not one damn thing here that you will ever crave. It is relatively cheap serviceable food that will fuel your drinking. I absolutely advise everyone to stay away from the burgers because even when they're not burnt they're bland. They are to be avoided like a Kate Hudson movie. Fourth, because of neighboring competition from Titanic and World of Beer, the Rat has a pretty great selection of bottled and draft beer. Getting a huge pitcher of Angry Orchard or a cheap Yuengling pitcher is nice when you're trying to maintain your status as a functioning alcoholic while remaining on campus. Their happy hour is also pretty decent although their beer prices are already cheap in the first place. If the food was any better than decent I would definitely give it the full five stars, but as it stands, it's still a great place to grab a beer in between classes or after a particularly long day read more

I have to fully admit this is a sentimental one for me. I love it because it's decorated in U gear, and I am always running into people I know here. Fried mac and cheese will always be my weakness. It comes in little triangle bites, and it's as if someone took a little triangle piece of heaven. The french fries here are THE BEST I have ever had. Period. Hands down. Sometimes, I'll just wake up and think, "I really want some Rat friends today". The service is slow sometimes, but when you have few servers and half the student body wanting either beer or friend food, you have to be a little understanding when it takes 30 minutes to get your food. I'm glad they haven't torn down the Rat yet, it's definitely one of my favorite places to eat in Coral Gables. Maybe it's just because of the college memories, or maybe it's because of the cheap happy hour and awesome burgers. Sitting outside on the gliders is really one of the main reasons to eat at the Rat too. The UM campus is gorgeous, and as long as it's not raining too hard you can eat outside no problem. Eating inside or getting takeout doesn't quite have the same effect--it's worth waiting for a glider. I have to admit service is usually fairly slow, but this isn't the sort of place you go to grab food and run. It's where you go to hang out and enjoy a few beers and the time you have with your friends. The food is not worth it. It's overpriced for what you get (even though it tends to be relatively cheap). What IS worth it is happy hour! $5 pitchers are just irresistible, and the atmosphere is beautiful and relaxing with the view of the lake nearby and swinging tables. read more

I ordered a veggie burger with lettuce and tomato and the general salad type things one puts on a burger. Asked for no avocado. When I got home, I discovered my burger was this: 1 bun top, plain black bean burger. Nothing else. I found this surprising because I had verbally confirmed with the student behind the counter that the burger would have the standard fixings on it. Whatever, I said, It's still food, I said. I tried to eat my bottomless nude burger. That's when I discovered it was cold. Not "this is not searing hot freshness" cold. "She's been dead for three days, Detective" cold. That really bugged me. So I called the Rat (hoping they would be less careless next time or refund my order). The person I spoke to offered me a partial discount on my next order (as if I would give them more business) and said "I wish you the best in life" LIKE WE WERE BREAKING UP OR SOMETHING. I'm disappointed more in the customer service here than in what I assume was oversight with the order. Good customer service is "sorry we messed up, next one's on us" or "sorry we messed up, refund," NOT "can you come back and buy it again at a discount?" with no admission of error. Oh well. The food isn't very good, and is pricey for what it is. The food all seems to be reheated mass produced food, and once my chicken breast in the chicken sandwich was the size of a silver dollar (the staff did replace it with a new one, but that shouldn't have left the kitchen). Clearly wouldn't stay open if it wasn't for its on campus location, which is definitely a nice hangout for a beer by Lake O or their Tuesday trivia nights. A happy hour to bring some of the $6-8 beers down to a more reasonable $4-5 would be nice, but I understand that an on campus restaurant doesn't want to encourage too much drinking. read more

Perfect for a chill lunch on the UM campus. Don't expect the fastest or the most stellar service, but unless you're really unlucky, you'll find a friendly face and a satisfying lunch. I always ask for my curly fries extra crispy, and boy are they good! My go-to lunch is always Pat's Vegetarian Pita, although their veggie burger is pretty decent. Sit outside on the gliders and enjoy the view of the lake and beautiful campus! read more

The RAt is a great place to meet with friends, sit down, drink beer and talk. However, if you are looking fir a quick bite, do not try here! The lines a vug and the service is super slow. I mean the servers are nice but the kitchen takes forever! It has gotten pricier but still a fairly good option on campus. You can euther sit outside, where servers come. Go inside, where you hace to order on your own. There is also an upstairs with a pool table. They offer game nights, trivia or they show big NFL games. They have several screens and one bug in the front and back! They also have independant artist nights! There is always something going on! The food is good. Nothing special though. They have good burgers and chicken wings. Theur quessadias are nit bad either, they have tap beers. Xou can get a pitvh for 20$. I suggest nit coming around 5-6 because then the wait is crazy! read more
