I had a great experience this morning with Ed at Quonset Hut. I called on my way there but no one answered. Then I got a call back immediately saying he missed it. He checked his caller ID and called someone back. Who does that anymore? Someone who cares about customer service. I told him what I was looking for and he knew he had some. He asked me the size I was looking for and immediately began pulling it for me. I arrived and he was ready to help me find the size I needed. I looked around and found something else I didn't realize I needed. He has so much gear, uniforms, etc. If you are looking for something particular I highly recommend calling him. He's now looking for an old unit patch for me. Ed was so nice, helpful, easy going, and funny. Mr. Romeo the shop dog was a cutie also. I'll definitely be back again. read more

Waaaaay over priced! Guy sells $50 slings used for $60. Sells ESS goggles new for $60, you can buy them for new $7 online, they are surplus, not art. Guy sells used hydration camelbak and source brand pouches for $60 used, you can buy them new for similar or less. I walk in with my conceal carry in a sling bag in my chest, he wants me to leave my bag on the floor by the front door. I tell him it has a gun in it, he tells me I can leave it by the front counter. I put it in my car. I go back in and ask him if he gets a lot of 42 year old disabled veterans stealing from his store. He's admits he doesn't. This place suuuuucks. read more

Curated milsurp at SoCo boutique prices. Yeah, they do have some cool very old stuff - that's the "curated" part. But for normal surplus type items, they are significantly overpriced. It's in a trendy high end thrift/high rent district and the clientele will pay the prices, I suppose, but if you want milsurp in ATX at normal prices (basically half what you will pay at this place), head up Lamar to a much more typical store. read more

Recently stopped by Quonset Hut looking for an obscure item and was really impressed by the level of service. The owner, Ed, immediately stopped what he was doing, and began rummaging through his "backroom" stock piles try to find my item. Unfortunately, I had to get to work and couldn't stick around, but he took my name and number and continued looking. Several hours later he followed up. This is a smaller store, but there is a lot inside. You do have to wind through some tight aisles, but there are uniforms, boots, gear, and more. The owner was knowledgeable about the significance of the uniforms and how to find the correct items. They also have some MREs and some tools, and really good prices. Definitely check it out. Parking is a bit tricky with the one-way streets, but there's a side lot on the main street side behind the truck. read more

I needed a green military wool blanket right away to give to someone in great need. Someone without heat in their sleeping quarters. I have an authentic Army wool blanket and know how warm they can be. On Tuesday November 5, 2019 I went to the store to purchase one. I needed it right away. When I saw the blanket I really didn't like it and it didn't even look like the right kind of green. I thought to purchase and if it was okay, I would buy more for the folks I know that are in need. I took it home and washed it in cold water with a mild detergent on delicate cycle. Well, the blanket SHED LARGE CLUMPS of wool all over my washer and the blanket had large clumps on it as well. I decided to place in the dryer on low heat knowing it would continue to shed but I was okay with it and even if it shrunk a bit it would be fine. I cleaned out the lent catcher 3 times - each time with a THICK wool shedding. Once the blanket was dry it looked kind of THIN. I paid $39.99 plus tax ($43.29) for this horrible blanket. I went back to the store the very next day. I took my receipt, the blanket and the LARGE roll of wool from the dryer lent catcher. The man there said he would not give me my money back because I RUINED THE BLANKET. He said that it is a DRY CLEAN ONLY blanket. I showed him a photo of a tag from the other military grade blanket I personally own (from Northwest Woolen Mills) and wash often and dry in the dry with no problems at all. He said the other one I have is not real. I believe green army military wool blankets are made to be used hard and washed under field conditions. I don't think our military have the LUXURY of taking their combat wash to the DRY CLEANERS. I was so disappointed to spend $43.29 on something I can't gift to a needy individual. Too bad I RUINED this piece of crappy blanket and not able to get my money back. Did not have a "DRY CLEAN ONLY" tag!!! read more

I had an ungainly folding bike that was scheduled to make an international flight the next day. I need a military grade, tough-as-nails, big, big, bag to stuff this thing in. Where to go what to do? Option 1....Call Quonset Hut! But I did not realize it was already 6:10pm...they close at 6:00. Dang. I almost hang up when bang, there is Ed on the phone. Has what I need. I tell him I need it tonight. He stays open a good 30 minutes later than usual to receive me. The bag was as advertised. Bike is now on plane heading to Belgium this am. Thank you Ed!!! read more

If you're looking for genuine military surplus, Quonset Hut has it. If there's something a little odd or rare (20th century military related) that you're after, Quonset Hut is your best bet. Now, the downside? Once you find what it is you're after, you might not be able to afford it. The prices here are a bit steep. Still, I like this shop. By chance, I stopped here about 10 years ago, right after they had received a shipment of NATO-era Luftwaffe leather flight jackets and, well, 10 years later I still have the same jacket. I guess if you're like me and don't mind digging around the tiny shop for hidden treasures or paying a bit more for the genuine article, then you'll like this place too. read more

I don't shop for military stuff , but needed a 1950's Navy dress A uniform cap so I could bury my father in full military honors. Q-Hut did come through and find a correct hat, but charged a $100 for it. I have since looked on auction sites and found the same hat starting at $10 and going up to about $40 or $45 , but since obviously time was of the essence, we had little choice but to purchase it . Bottom line-I felt that we were taken advantage of because of our state of mind/grief. read more

Really cool place for the right crowd. I'm cheap & don't have a true interest in adventuring or military items so it's not really for me, but I can appreciate that this place has it's own niche. If you are adventurous and outdoorsy you could definitely use some of this stuff! It is high quality military surplus. They also have some very cool older items that I assume are rare by the price tag (you'd have to know more than me!!!) It's somewhat expensive if you are a leisurely shopper like me, but I'm betting the price would be right for a true collector or someone in need of military grade items. read more

Through years of moving around after leaving the military I have lost some things and had some just plain stolen. So to find a decent surplus store that can help me replace those items is a very cool thing. Quonset Hut is located right off the drag on Fruth and it offers some very cool items, from modern surplus to World War II era surplus and even older. The owner is very friendly and willing to help you find what you need or place any special orders. He isn't that knowledgeable about Navy stuff but hey that's not a big deal, I know what I need. The prices can be a little high but you are paying for the convenience and the service, not something you are going to find buying online. I will warn you though that the place is VERY packed, just crammed full of goodies, so it can be hard to find what you are looking for and those who are mobility impaired might have a tough time getting around. Overall, I really love this place, I appreciate it even being there and I really enjoy the service and sharing stories with the owner. Great store. read more

Many "surplus" stores are becoming military clothing shops, but The Quonset Hut remains true to those looking for military gear, equipment, memorabilia and mementos. Give yourself some time to look around, while the place isn't big there is a lot to see in there! The owner is extremely friendly and helpful, and will help you find what you are looking for. This place is the perfect destination for film majors wanting to make a war movie. The owner rents out all of his stuff! Quonset Hut is a lot smaller than other Army and Navy surplus stores, and they don't have cool "Vietnam was a Living Hell" T-shirts, but they do have some stuff I've never seen, including super old uniforms, buttons and badges. The owner of this place is very helpful. He told me all about this awesome 70 year old bicycle he was selling. The bicycle immedietly caught my eye because it had a special Red Cross satchel, holders for canteens and supplies -- and it looked like new. I guess they built it to last and to be light because the only tell-tale sign of it's age was the dried out leather seat. I fell in love with the bike, I must admit, but it wasn't for sale. If it were it would cost $1,800, the owner said. He bought 10 of these bikes in Switzerland during the '70s and sold all but three of them for $600. I am in the military, and like many, engage an active interest in the history. The Quonset Hut was recommended to me by the Texas Military Museum at Camp Mabry. They lived up to my expectations. The other "army-navy" stores here in Austin are all good for what they do, and I have shopped at them, but Quonset Hut does more for the money. They have a ton of historical items, some from other nations, but they also carry recent and modern gear. read more

I first went to Quonset Hut several months ago. Now I'm addicted. This quaint shop is the perfect militaria shop for those that like to treasure hunt for vintage military pieces. This is the real deal. It is run by Ed who is absolutely the nicest guy you'll ever run into. He is extremely knowledgeable. He knows his trade. Whatever you need, you're sure to find it here. I love collecting the old stuff and he sure has it. Every time I go in I find something new. Because much of what Ed carries is collectible, it may or may not be bargain bottom prices. I just had an awesome fun time shopping here! We walked up to find that the power was out, but hell it's a surplus store so pass out the flashlights! There were about ten other guys in there poking through the shelves with their phones lighting the way and If you haven't been there, like most surplus joints it's crammed full of cool stuff. All in all it was like playing Z-Day looting... but with big kid money. Ed, the owner is nice guy and all in the shop were having a great time. Made a purchase from this store online. Turns out the merchant made a pricing error and did not want to honor the transaction. Instead of honoring the sale, the transaction was cancelled by the merchant and money was refunded without apology. A good reputable business honors a sale even when the mistake was made on thier part. There was no apology, no offer to make good on the sale, no discount offered or any attempt to make things right by this merchant. I went here today looking for a bag to replace my old canvas messenger bag. They have a pretty varied selection of military gear. The place is packed and only vaguely organized, but that's pretty standard for an Army/Navy surplus place. I did notice that most of the selection seemed more geared towards military collectors and filmmakers (they rent out gear) and not towards people who are looking for actual serviceable gear. I did find a pretty sweet Czech army bag and I only paid a little more for it than I thought I would have elsewhere. Their selection of BDU's was pretty small, so if you're looking for those I'd recommend going to NS Army Navy Store. The guy who runs the place seemed really friendly and eager to assist his customers. We called him to ask for directions when we were looking for the place and he was very helpful. I first walked into Quonset looking to do a photo story for a photographic communication class I'm currently enrolled in, but after meeting Ed, the owner, I knew immediately that I'd be shifting my focus. I'd found a hidden jewel, and I don't just mean the shop. Ed was so welcoming; the kind of person you can greet with a simple "Hello," and feel like you've known for years. Not even ten minutes after we'd met, Ed was sharing stories, showing me pictures, telling me all about the shop's beginning, his upbringing as a military child, and some of the customers that have come through over the years that he's since built a long-standing relationship with. Before I knew it, two hours had passed, and it was time for him to close up shop. Not even two weeks after my first visit, I returned hoping to continue the conversation. As the hours passed by, I learned that Ed was never all too certain what he wanted to do with his life as he was growing up, but his father told him, "'Son, whatever you do in life, you've got to work for yourself. You're too independent to do anything else.'" Ed then told me, "He was right." After several years in the Hotel Management business, Ed walked away from it all, started his little shop in West Campus, and has been going strong for seventeen years since. This past summer, a friend and I spent a weekend visiting three military supply stores in Austin. Our favorite store was Quonset Hut, located off the drag. The store is brimming with authentic military gear and true finds (for example, a hat from the Afghanistan war, worn by a Russian soldier in the 1980s). There is inventory in every nook and cranny, much of it very reasonably priced (for example, authentic 100% cotton hats at $4). The Quonset Hut is THE place to go for Quality militaria. Ed always has something you won't see anywhere else. Sometimes the price might be a little steep but this only reflects the rarity of the item. No one is forcing you to buy. Ed has a wide range of militaria covering several decades of military history. Generally the prices are very reasonable. You have to realize that once a certain item is sold there may not be any more because of the age or rareness. Since the release of several quality military themed movies such as Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers there has been a tremendous increase in the number of militaria collectors. This is really good for the collectible market but the down side is there is more competition for items. I must say that the Quonset Hut has always been fair. They are not out to gouge anyone. I come from out of town and if I let Ed know I am coming he will stay open a little longer (within reason). I am always a satisfied customer. read more
