First of all, Pemberton as a whole is ADORABLE and a must visit. Second, The Pony is a rustic and slightly divey place with no frills, but just tasty food, so head in for a casual meal. It's located next to a bike shop, so go in and peruse, and head next door for some delicious sandwiches. I LOVED my gyro and the poutine was pretty good. But to me, even bad poutine is good, so take that for what it's worth. The burgers are small but stacked, and I liked the pear cider. We did get dessert and while simple, they were pretty good. Service was great, if not a biiiiiiit slow, but we were the first table in there right upon opening, so they were still sort of getting things ready. It was summer, doors were open, and yes there were some flies, but that's kind of what you get in the PNW summers. Don't let it deter you - it's got some gems on the menu. read more

The Pony is a great spot to grab dinner or go for drinks in Pemberton. My friend and I came for dinner on a Saturday night at 8 pm and the whole place was hopping. This seems to be the place to be on a Saturday night in Pemberton! We snagged one of the last empty tables. They have a large selection of alcohol, from cocktails to beers and wine. I was impressed by the diversity of the food menu as well. Not only do they have standard pub food like burgers and sandwiches, wings, pizza, fish and chips, etc., but they also have a selection of Asian dishes like chow mein and Thai curry. Aside from the standard menu, they also offer daily specials which are written on a blackboard. When we came, they had seafood chowder, Korean pork pizza, and rigatoni pasta on the specials board. We shared the shiitake chow mein with chicken added ($17.50 + $5 for the chicken) and a custom pizza with tomato slices and oregano ($19.50). Both were solid, and we left very full and satisfied. We ended up taking some of the pizza and noodles home as leftovers, as the portions were big, especially for the pizza. read more

I've been here 5 times since November and out of those times, I ordered the yellow curry vegan twice cause they said it was vegan. So after my hike in the area yesterday, we went there and I wanted to order the yellow curry vegan again. They then told me that it has fish sauce in their curry. I got really displeased and pissed as I've order the yellow curry twice before and not knowing that they added fish sauce. I told the waitress and the manager about how this is so wrong and it's a food and safety issue. Manager then said they get a lot of vegans going to their restaurant that are non strict vegans. I got angry and told the manager that those aren't vegans. Also, I told the manager that if I was allergic to fish, I could die from it. Manager thinks it's the customer's responsibility to raise it to the wait staff. Seems the manager is trying to put the blame on me, when in fact the restaurant is fully responsible for food safety and ensuring they ask customers if they are allergic. As well, I emphasized vegan in the yellow curry many times. Manager didn't offer me anything for their poor service and I had to ask for it. Completely poor service and they have absolutely no food quality control. I will be talking to my lawyer this week and reporting this to food safety at coastal health. read more

This is a gem. French trained chef. Seriously great food where you least expect it. The Nicoisé salad is one of the best we've had outside of France. Good beer selection on tap. Friendly relaxed staff. What's not to like in the beautiful little town. I'm tired of the crowds in Whistler. Much prefer stopping here for lunch. Oh and the fries......yummy. Also ask about buying a dozen local eggs! Plus look up for the model railway that circumnavigates the ceiling. read more

The Pony serves the best burger I have had in Canada...it might even be the best burger I have ever eaten. One of my friends came here a year ago, and he shed a tear because the burger was so tasty! This time the same friend said it was just as good as he remembered. I tried the ultimate burger with foie gras, pork belly, onion marmalade, really tasty tomatoes and a balsamic reduction that brought the whole thing together. I loved it (although to be honest, it was so rich, it may not need the foie gras.) My friends all swear by the gormet burger (then they ask to add foie gras to it.) So, if you are ever hiking near Joffre Lakes, pop by hear on your way back to Vancouver. You will not be disappointed. read more

For a small eatery, well any eatery really, this place is quite good! The place looks like a converted old barn from the gold rush days, but with new walls on the inside...word of caution, don't sit next to the dividing walls, one of them toppled over and nearly hit a patron in the head!! Happily surprised the food is great and they use 'fancy' cheese in their sandwiches and their version of mac n' cheese! I had the grilled veggie salad, it came with grilled artichokes, eggplant, red peppers, mushrooms, mixed greens, feta cheese and it was fantastic. The pulled pork on thick toasted baguette like bread was also very good and a favorite from what we could see, definitely a must have for meat eaters and came with fries. The grilled panini with Prosciutto, provolone, gruyere and salami was very good and came with a caesar salad that had prosciutto and half an egg. Portions very generous and fresh. I also had a coffee because a few people mentioned it was really good, but I can't agree, it tasted like old stale coffee, bland and had an after taste...sorry. read more

This place is one of the few restaurants open later in the night, so I can see why they get busy for the late night crowd. But I guess that's a good strategy when you have very few options to choose from. I came up from the states to spend the weekend in whistler, but our hotel was in pemberton. My friends and I wanted to grab some food and the pony was the only place open. When we arrived the place was small and pretty crowded, but not terribly packed where every table was full. There were about 4 tables of 4 available but not together. We had a group of 11, which I can understand be overwhelming for a small local restaurant. As soon as we told the hostess/waitress (her name was Monica by the way) that we need a table for 11, she said we could either wait 30 minutes to clear off tables or sit separately or she could maneuver some tables together and have a big group and a small group. She ended up making a big table for the majority of us while a group of 4 would sit in another table. That was fine with us because we just wanted to grab food and be seated. Once our table was ready, the waitress didn't tell us to sit or seat us or anything so we just stood there waiting. Then in a rude tone of voice she said we could sit down. How were we supposed to know if it was ready? You didn't sit us down. The whole time she had an attitude because we were a big group. She had a rude tone of voice when we ordered and would make comments like "next time you guys should make a reservation since you're a big group." I get it, it's inconvenient, you weren't prepared, whatever the case may be, but you shouldn't be rude to paying customers who were willing to spend a lot of money at your establishment. We got a bottle of wine, we ordered lots of food, drinks and desserts and probably spent $50 per person. The food wasn't bad. The super ultimate burger was delicious, juicy and so flavorful. The service just ruined it for me. Monica ruined it for me. The only time she was nice was when we were about to tip her and when she knew we were leaving. Monica gave us such a bad experience at the restaurant that having good food doesn't make up for it. It's a shame that she couldn't be accommodating and get over the fact that she was overwhelmed. Mile One Eating House had a mile long line-up out the door so we decided to give The Pony a try. Man, did we ever regret not waiting! We were in the area after a day of hiking and decided to take our order back to the hotel to enjoy. We were SO disappointed when we opened up the take-out containers to what was revealed inside. I ordered the tuna poke ($15). The list of issues include: - Tuna not fresh and looked like it was hacked at when being cut up. - There was supposed to be avocado but I only got 2 small pieces of it. - Way too much onion. - Portion was very small for the price. - The fried crisps were soaking in grease. I also ordered some yam fries. They were mediocre at best and came with BBQ dipping sauce (which I found confusing). Never again. read more

With slim pickings in a town of 2500, I was happy to find the Pony. In fact, driving into town my "ah ha, that's where it's at" spidy senses went off and there was no stopping me! It was alive and kicking on a Friday night, with playoff hockey (we lost) and their One Year Anniversary party. Service was a kind of efficient, but not as friendly as one would like, but I would guess that it's harder to find good servers in a small town. Beers were $3.25 a pint, for Howe Sound or Whistler Brewery and a small, but well appointed, menu of tapas was $5. Pizza was the only other thing that we could order, and while I wished a salad or two would have been offered, I couldn't complain about the pizza selection. The Cow Tipper pizza was full of blue cheese and sweet tasting beef flavour, and depending on what slice you bit into you got a heavy dose of either or. The price was a little steep at $16 but the pizza was filling and the crust was flat and crispy. From the tapas menu we ordered the pork belly. Now, I've had a few bellies in my life, and I have to say, this goes down as one of the best. Like a creme brulee in Buenos Aires, Argentina or a tortilla soup in Tulum, Mexico -- Pemberton, BC's Pork Belly might just be the new measuring stick for all future bellies I put into my belly. read more

Popped in here for dinner after an invigorating yoga session across the street at Village Yoga. Having celiac I had read that there were options here so we decided to give it a go. We arrived at 7pm on a Thursday night and this place was packed! We waited a bit for a table ( like 5-7 mins) we were seated and our server was at the table with waters almost immediately. She was super sweet and informed me of all the safe gluten free options and I ultimately chose the Nicoise Salad with the appy portion. I also chose a delicious glass of red wine from the Kelowna region called Magma Red and it was fantastic. My friend ordered the yellow curry and they said it was really good. Overall great experience and the staff was very nice even tho they were sooo busy!!! Great selection of beers- and they have a local gluten free Whistler Lager. They do list Omission as being gluten free and it is gluten reduced, which frustrates me as a celiac. There are so many truly gluten free beers out there but Omission isn't one of them! read more

It is very hard for me to let go of the "old" Pony Espresso It was far more than coffee (the name is misleading),.. it was great, cheap, food, served from a cowboy shack in what looked like an overgrown backyard. It was one of my favourite places on earth, and probably Pemberton's "real" community centre. The land was turned into condos but a new place was built further into town and that seemed to coincide with it going a bit upscale. It still has a great patio and decent burgers but the huge array of baked goods,.. I don't see them anymore,.. I'm 99% sure that most of of the menu has changed if not the owners. It just isn't the same, not even close Does that mean it is bad? No. However Mile 1 down the street has taken its place as a place to get one of the best burgers you've ever had,.. and fruit pie. If Mile 1 is full,.. this is a decent place to get the meal and beer after you finish your 3 day hike and an exit that dusty logging road. read more

Very friendly service and unexpectedly generous portions. We came here by chance and discovered it as a delightful surprise.

This restaurant looks crowded, with a large patio next to the road. They have issues with the service, asking people to wait for a table when there are many available ones both inside and outside. The server said they were busy at the kitchen and we had to wait... waited over half an hour to get our table. In the meantime you have to wait outside by the door, could be nicer waiting on a chair. Anyway... It was getting cool to be outside for late dinner, but inside they would need to improve the ventilation system, it's both hot and smelly. Surprisingly, food came pretty fast. Crab cakes, pulled pork sandwich, Cajun burger... all good, but couldn't say it was amazing. Just good. Best option in town. Doubt it, but not many more. read more

The Pony Espresso is still alive and well (John C. thought that it would be closed by now). I was excited to check this place out after spending an obscene amount of money on breakfast the previous day in Whistler. My stomach was rumbling as we rolled into Pemberton & I was excited to see that the in person menu was much more exciting than what was posted on their website. They had multiple delicious sounding variations on eggs benny, all priced at $12. I opted for the Pemberton Edge - two poached eggs in hollandaise served over potato rosti with sauteed asparagus. We were only one of two tables in the place, but the service was really slow, I hungrily awaited my delicious sounding breakfast treat as I sipped on my not-so-fresh-squeezed orange juice with ice in it. I used the extensive wait to observe my surroundings, The Pony Espresso serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with all three menus having vegetarian options that sound delicious. It also seems to double as bakery, ice cream parlor, and deli (smart business practice in a small town, I'm sure). They have a good sized patio along the main street; sitting inside the floor to ceiling glass windows allow for awesome mountain views. Finally an employee (not our server) approaches with two plates of food, she sets them down, mumbles something, and scurries away. I look down at the plate I have been given, and am confused. This is an english muffin, not a potato cake, and these are peppers not asparagus! I don't even think this was on the menu, and I'm allergic to peppers! Upon further examination, there were no peppers on the menu anywhere, not even on the lunch or dinner menus. It was . . . weird. I decided to scrape the peppers off and hope for the best as it had already taken so long to get our food in the first place, we really needed to get back on the road and didn't want to wait even longer to have the order corrected. Our server finally appeared when we were halfway through our meal. She had no idea why I had received the wrong thing and comped it when we explained that we didn't have time for it to be replaced. My family cabin is near Pemberton and one day I finally ventured into the Pony, curious and famished. I was attended to immediately and not made to feel at all weird that I was by myself. The menu featured many locally inspired and grown dishes. There was not a lot for vegetarians beyond the standard salad/grilled vegetable salad but the goat cheese tart piqued my interest. It was delicious and just the ride portion size. The atmosphere was friendly and genuine and my service was impeccable. I've since been back many times and have never been disappointed. I even brought some meat-eater friends and they assured me that the Pemberton rump steak was succulent, flavorful and perfectly prepared. My only complaint: the menus are riddled with grammatical and spelling errors (dumb but irksome). I mentioned it casually to my server and she laughed and said the chef was French and he'd put it together. read more

So we walked in on a Friday night and the place was packed. No worries. Waited 5 minutes to seat. Waited another 15 minutes to each being greeted by different menus? Is this what happens when you let hipsters run a restaurant through a coffee shop? Another 10 minutes to get our order taken by an unnecessarily snotty waiter. No water. Nothing while we waited. When our orders were taken we were warned the kitchen was swamped and our food would take a bit. I fully appreciated that. Showing up in the middle of a busy night with less than adequate staff happens. What matters is how these situations are handled by the staff. One of the specials that night was a crab bisque or some such and it came with house bread. I have an idea, why don't you toss a grumbly, hungry, but patient table of folks one of those pre-made breads you got back there while they waited? It would have done wonders for morale. Now, I cant be too too hard on this place because Im from Van and we have it really good. Pemberton is a one-horse town after all. Heres a meal breakdown. Appy: Calimari. I assume it was "asian fusion" because it had peanuts and cilantro in it and was served with thai sweet chili sauce. The flavors were very good but the calimari was soggy as a motherf. Why? Because the fryer oil had too much moisture in it. It shouldve been changed out. Burger/fries: Small, but tasted good, quality ingredients. The fries were soggy same as the calimari above. Salmon filet on noodles: I was told the salmon was tasty but the noodles it sat on were swimming in sauce. Donair: (wtf? I wont even talk about this) Pad thai: In a word, tasteless. Mind you my buddy is vietnamese restaurant owner so the cards were against the dish. It was basically my buddys fault for ordering that and expecting to be impressed. I really dont want to tear this place apart but dammit there were just so many things at fault here. The restaurant tries to pull off a gourmet frou frou type of menu and thats fine but you gotta go all in not half assed. My burger came out looking gourmet and instead of including a small bit of ketchup or even better a chipotle mayo in a little dipping cup, Im offered some No Name ketchup in a bottle. I asked for a side of mayo and received a bowl full of mayonnaise. Da fuq? For all the locals that love this place and who are probably friends with the owners, Im happy for you. Enjoy the haunt. It was soo good. Good service, good beer and good food. Until this week. We went there on Dec 27th 2012, I ordered the pasta special, it was good but very small portion. The burgers my husband usually ordered was drier and had less fixings then the last time he ordered in when we were here last July. The fries were also overcooked. Oh well, once is ok. We were back again Dec 29th. We got there at 5:00 and ordered. We said we were waiting for friends but to not hold up our order on their behalf, They got there at 5:30. They were served at 6:15. We were still waiting. Oh the kitchen screwed up... ok so ... where is our food? its coming. Then when my pizza arrived it was the wrong one, so I could have it free off charge or wait for the one I ordered for 45 minutes. WE ORDERED AT 5:00! We were visiting around Whistler and found this on Yelp. Great little outdoor patio for dinner. I had the crab cakes which were delicious, (although the sauce was too spicy for me) and the Creme Brûlée was fantastic. My friend had a burger and fries- her burger was so huge she had to take 1/2 home. It was perfectly cooked and the fries were nice & crispy. The food was very attractively plated, the service was great and helpful right down to her beer recommendation. Inside is more like a sports bar but they seemed to be having a great time. Our waitress took a long time (probably 20 minutes) to come to the table and ask for the order, and in the middle of mine walked away. When I asked if a pizza could be split between 2 plates she straight up said no - it came sliced but she apparently couldn't be bothered to put them on more than one plate. The waitress had no opinions on any food, which did not help with ordering. Her response to "how is the tree hugger pizza" was a shrug. I understand the indecisiveness because the food was really average when it finally came and the waitress never checked on the table again. My husband and I ventured here late one night after we were unable to get into our first choice of restaurant in town, and we were pleasantly wowed! From reading other reviews, I got the impression that the food here was pretty basic, but our experience was rather exceptional (new menu perhaps?). After polishing off a basket of freshly basked bread, I had herb-encrusted local halibut, served with gold and purple Pemberton potatoes, mussels, and shrimp -- food euphoria! My hubby had the bavette (steak) with blue cheese, prawns, and spicy potatoes (a tad too spicy), which he was also raving about. The atmosphere is very casual -- almost incongruous with the fine food, but it conveyed a genuine, local feeling. The service was a tad slow (I'd take off half a star for that), but very friendly. read more

Good food and great place to stop during a road trip. Service is a tad on the slower side if you're used to the rushed city life but just grab a beer and kick back on their patio. Quality ingredients and construction to their burgers that don't just fall apart. Poutine could be better and is served on a cast iron skillet that could be much hotter.
