All right, before I begin my review of the food, I have the say: they have the BEST cheesecake I have ever had in my life. It was their turtle cheesecake (they change their cheesecake continuously and only have one at a time, so I've only seen this one once). I honestly could not believe it. I was even considering taking one to go. However, like I said, they change their cheesecakes all of the time, so #1 cheesecake status is not guaranteed. They've also had a Nanaimo cheesecake that was unreal. Their unbaked cheesecakes are usually not as good, though. However, except for the last time I was at the Point (I've been here ~ 6 times) their food has always been just okay. Not that flavourful. And also quite expensive. They get you because there are only a couple of restaurants at UBC so there is sort of no choice. BUT, they recently changed their menu and I really really liked the burger I got (The Suarez) so it's possible they did an overhaul and all of their food has gotten better... but it may be unlikely.After I move off campus it's likely I'll never come back... except for the cheesecake. As I've said in previous reviews, it's nice to have this sit-down restaurant in this part of campus where there's not a lot of options for a full service meal. The staff is professional and the service is reasonably quick. The restaurant itself can get a little loud (music levels are fine these days, it's just that any room will get loud when you fill it with uni students), but it's a clean and bright environment. The main menu has lots of options to accommodate vegetarian and vegan diets, the brunch menu has a very limited vegan selection which is underwhelming when you consider that UBC seems to like to push their plant-based food at other dining locations. Most of the food that I've tried is really good, a few items have been underwhelming. Usually I love their crispy tofu, but I recently tried the Gochujang Tofu Wraps and found the tofu to be a little dry, plus it should have been diced smaller to work more efficiently in the wraps. I had the same problem with the perogies (not currently on the menu), where they were fried to the point of being too crisp. Otherwise what I've said previously about the food still stands - the salads/bowls with fresh vegetables are really good, and I really enjoyed the experience of the lettuce wraps despite the tofu not being quite to my preference. It's on the pricey side but portions are huge. Highly recommend trying the brownie for dessert. read more

I have been to this place a couple times since it is an ideal spot to bring coworkers and a group to sit down and eat on campus. There really isn't much competition on campus for that sort of restaurant besides the Gallery and Sage. Its affordable, and if you make reservations, you can get pretty good service at busy hours. During this trip, I went with a group of 14, and we were served in a fair amount of time. I ordered the Thai Tofu Bowl ($16), which came with some shredded carrot, bean sprout, cabbage, cucumber, mango, peanuts, and fried tofu topped on rice. The portion size was filling but I wish I received a bit more fried tofu, since it probably was the most tasty part of the menu. Out of the many times I have been to this spot, this order was probably the best tasting I have received. There was a good amount of sauce, a nice variety of vegetables, and the dish was filling. Some complaints about the dish could include the carrots seeming a bit dry, and the cucumbers cut into a bit too large of slices. I don't enjoy most of the sandwiches or fries that they serve at this restaurant, but this special bowl impressed me. Compared to the average sit-down burger joint, this place doesn't really stand out, but it's the best we got on campus. I came here for lunch and ordered a Autumn Crunch salad and poutine. My boyfriend ordered a steak and we shared lemon and pepper chicken wings. I think the food here was only okay. I took a bite of the steak, and it was really really dry. The chicken wings were just okay. I like the homemade granola in my salad, I like the taste of cinnamon of it. This restaurant just opened earlier this year on UBC campus. It's spacious and can easily host large groups with separate tables. There's nice LCD Tv's all around the restaurant and it was a nice place to hang out and try different menu items during winter olympics and world cup soccer. I enjoy their appy items like nachos, sweet potato fries and calamari, was especially great when paired with beer and world cup soccer game at the time. My favorite entrees are their angel hair pasta with prawns, coconut curry vegetables and the prime rib burger with garlic fries. The vegan burger and the summer berry salad are also good vegetarian choices. Note: they are still updating their menu often so please don't be alarmed if my recommended dishes are not available at the time of your visit. If you are at UBC and would like to go for a casual lunch/dinner or find a nice place for coffee and drinks, this place is worth checking out. read more

I don't understand all of the negative reviews. I ate here two nights in a row, and enjoyed both the food and service both nights. The salmon was really good! The pasta I had the second night wasn't as good, but I still enjoyed it. I had excellent service both nights. And, I really enjoyed the patio. Well, it's not bad if you're on campus and need a place to go outside of the Union area. The environment and the staff are ok enough, but it's rather quirky and inconsistent. While our party of four partook in the burgers, salad and fish tacos, none was particularly outstanding in any manner or form, and the fish tacos were pretty light on fish and heavy on cilantro. It's somewhat pricey as well, although for sure it could be alot worse. We'd say that it's ok for what it is - a convenient bistro on that side of town/campus - but one pays for the privilege in taste and price. read more

To be honest, most of their dishes are still hit and miss. Some are delicious and worth the money, but others are mediocre. I haven't tried the point burger, but that's only because I've heard it was average at best. Their chipotle chicken burger is disgraceful; the grilled angus steak is good (sometimes); wild mushroom penne is acceptable, but sometimes too sweet; and their fries aren't anything noteworthy. Okay, there are a lot of things wrong with The Point Grill, but if you find the few dishes you really like, and go there to eat those specific dishes, you'll end up liking the place. Never ever order the steak, the fries or the wraps. 1. The steak is tasteless and expensive, you could probably do a better job doing it yourself 2. The fries are all pre fried and sitting in the metal bowl waiting to be picked up and served. When I lived at Marine, most of my friends would come to Point Grill because they were too hungover or lazy to cook. If the Point Grill wasn't on UBC right inside Marine Drive, it would never survive. It's one of the few UBC run full restaurants on campus, aside from Koerner's Pub which is run by the Grad Society. The food prices are the same as what you'd get at Milestone's or Earls, and they're aiming for a similar trendy setting. But the food just isn't comparable, it's far below average. They've experimented with the menu for a few years, and at what times they serve brunch, lunch, and dinner. Their basic dishes are pretty consistent, like their AAA hamburger, which is the best thing they have. The steaks and fish are overpriced, with portions way too small for what you pay for. Their brunch is terrible, the sausages and eggs aren't that much better than what you get at the first year cafeterias. The service is similar too, they're nice but again no nicer than the UBC Food workers at the cafeterias. What's awful is Point Grill will completely screw you on the portions. You'll order fish or dessert, and you barely get anything. Then they hit you with the, "Oh, it's 'sustainable' as if that justifies them way overcharging for tiny portions and below average food. You shouldn't label yourself a "Grill" when you rip people off on the meat portion of the entree and say it's cool because it comes with a lot of lettuce. I can "grill" my own lettuce. Usually, reasonable people don't show up to grills or BBQ restaurants to have salad with a small side of steak. If I want to get overcharged for the benefit of getting to read about how "ocean wise", "local", and "sustainable" my food is on the menu, I'll eat in San Francisco with the crazies that think it's awesome to pay $40 for an asparagus served in a fancy jar. read more

Food here is a little too expensive for what you get but I absolutely love their veggie burgers! Best I've had! This is definitely not some place I would travel long distances to eat at but since i live right next to it, the convenience outweighed the price (especially during exam times). Service here is a bit slow and food is just descent, nothing great about the place, just convenient. EDIT August 18, 2012: This place SUCKS!!! I'm not sure what to make of the Point Grill, it's located in a university residence, but it doesn't seem to cater to the students that live there. I feel like UBC would have been better off putting a fast-food/corner store type place instead if they were courting the students of Marine Drive. I can't say that I've tried enough of the menu to make blanket statements about the quality of the food, but everything I've tried, mostly the pizzas and burgers have been of decent quality, but expensive. While I lived at Marine Drive I would only eat there for special occasions, or as a last resort. The Point Grill is fine place to go for a relatively-nice meal if you don't feel like going off campus, but I wouldn't recommend eating there on a regular basis (although I've met some people who do). If you're eating off a meal plan, and feel like a treat, this is a nice departure from cafeteria food, and not inconveniently located in relation to the two first-year dorms. read more

I go here a few times a week to grab a drink or bite to eat with my boyfriend. It's a great spot on campus, and the staff are super friendly. They really go the distance to make you happy, are friendly and chatty at the bar, and act really quickly if there's a complaint. It's a great atmosphere, the service is awesome, the food is typically really good (ranges from best ever to meh depending on the item). PROS: location is super convenient, licensed bar (but limited range of drinks), variety of seating, clean restaurant, and the staff gives you that Cheers kinda feeling. TIP: the deep fried pickles are AMAZING. I also recommend the wintergreen salad, goat cheese wrap and the burgers. Don't bother with the Therefore I Yam, it was gross. read more

Our party had cocktails (not as chilled as they should be, but still yummy after a long rainy day), wings (too little salt, but liked house BBQ sauce), linguine (ok) and the burger (well, kind of ok, don't want to dissemble it). Food is mediocre, but convenient if you are looking for campus eating with ambience and outdoor patio, watching the rain trickle down over the overhang. I don't quite understand the low ratings for this. While it's not a place I would ever choose to go, I enjoyed my meal here. I was at a daylong seminar at UBC, and this place was chosen for the group to have lunch since they cater to different dietary requirements (good for me, since I'm vegan). I had their veggie burger (with a nice chickpea patty), with a nice side salad -- total was $14++, a bit pricy for UBC, but still alright. Friendly service and the food came out quite quickly. Reading others reviews, I didn't have great expectations. And those reviews are certainly believable. But, it looks like I got lucky enough on my one and only visit here so far, en route to the beach. Plenty of staff and this reasonably efficient service. Yes, the menu is limited (had the house burger with cesar salad - nothing to complain about, nor exclaim about either). Came out fast enough. A little on the small side for the price, but we've been warned about that. Salad was a good portion, although also nothing to write home about. All in all, good enough, I guess, but I'll probably stick with Koerner's Pub as my go-to pre- or post-beach food and/or drinks option. read more

October Review: 6/30 UBC Food Services finally opened up a nice little full service restaurant with the Point Grill. It had a bit of a rocky start but things seem to have stabilized for the most part. The relatively standard lunch fare, salads, sandwiches, and some mains. The portions are decent and the food is fresh and tasty, if you're on campus it's definitely a good place to go. My complaint is that it can get pretty busy and service can then start to suffer as well as the fact that the prices are a little high for what the restaurant it, but you can't be too picky at UBC sometimes. read more

Ahh, Point Grill. Conveniently located near Marine Drive residences, this place sells overpriced burgers and a few other entrees for students who are too busy to cook. Unfortunately I fall into that category as well, and thus I have tried many of their burgers. My personal favourite is the BBQ burger. Beef dip sandwich is the worst I've had (the dip they give you tastes really weird and bland at the same time). The salmon burger is surprisingly juicier than what I've had at the burger bar, but the sauce is sub-par. pulled pork sandwich is incomparable to other places outside of Ubc (the sauce again isn't very good). The garlic fries are the best imo, but it really depends on who is making your order. Sometimes the fries are great, sometimes they're burnt and bad :/ I haven't tried it myself but I heard the pastas - prawn+tomato linguine, mushroom penne, and Mac+cheese are quite good. Don't get the steak/fish and chips - overpriced and highly not worth your money. Service depends on the server, don't expect anything great though. Overall it's quite average or below average. if you need to get your food quickly, call them and give them your order! It'll be done in 15min and you can go down and pay and receive your order at the same time. read more

The chicken was quite dry and the sauce tasted like it came out of any reasonably priced supermarket pasta jar. Very limited menu selections (the number of choices seem to shrink by the dozen each year) and service is a hit and miss. Sometimes friendly and enthusiastic, more often than not slow, inefficient with a snotty attitude. The burgers are decent. Sandwiches and subs/pasta is mediocre, sometimes even inferior to grocery store frozen entrees. The prices are laughable; if it weren't for a steady stream of lazy students dining here for a lack of closer source of food, this place would've gone out of business years ago. As a first-year resident, this is basically my only option on the weekend when the Totem Dining Hall is closed (which is often whenever I feel like eating--they close very early) and I desperately need to eat something. Now, some would argue that it's a very nice 'last resort', and indeed it would seem as such, but not for someone like me. I really want to like the Point Grill, but it's far too expensive for what is offered, and the offerings for vegetarians (again, like me) are extremely sparse: a fatty pasta and a tiny stir-fry. The vegan crispy tofu & broccoli stir fry was great the first couple of visits, but it's not so wonderful once you realise that it's basically all you can eat from there. Still, if I'm going to be (reluctantly) paying $13 for three pieces of broccoli, two carrot slices and ten tofu squares, you'd think that they'd be far more generous with the (delicious) broccoli/carrots and at least give the option for brown rice, something I've come to expect in the city of endless health food stores and yoga pants. But alas, no. This seems to be the healthiest meal available anytime after 7:15 on campus during the weekend, which is quite sad. read more

Came here for lunch. The place was packed! I had the Fish Tacos as an entree - it's listed under items for "sharing". Fish Tacos (Gluten Free): - The salmon was cooked well and was not fishy. - The coleslaw was creamy and crisp. - The chipotle mayo added an interesting flavor to the tacos. - The tortilla had a good smokey flavor from the grill.. The food was good for being on campus. Too bad it took too long for the food to arrive at the table (nearly an hour). The service was nonexistent. The waitress was very much absent and the food was served by the kitchen staff. Overall: A pretty decent place for a casual sit-down meal on campus. None of the people walking the UBC campus knew where this was, and believe me, I asked. When I finally tripped over it, I was pleasantly surprised. I got two meals out of my jambalaya. Canadian burger was good, and massive. Blackened salmon caesar salad very good. Capuccino decent. Apparently it's part of the university food service, but it has the noisy feel of a sports bar. I ordered the veggie burger and it was great! It was a chickpea patty and was cooked perfectly because the patty had parts that were extra crunchy! The meal costed around $13 plus tips and taxes! I was very satisfied at the end of my meal, so it was filling imo. For the burger, you also get to choose a side! I chose fries and there were quite a lot of fries! Our waiter was not on the professional side and when he served our food, he dropped my top burger bun on the table. In addition to that, he initially did not want to combine 2 tables for a party of 5 and made us sit in a table for 4. Atmosphere was nice but our waiter did not seem like he wanted to be there and he also tried to crack jokes but it didn't really make sense/ felt weird. I'll give the place some mercy since it has a really nice atmosphere, but the food was disappointing. Referring back to Belgian Fries, for the portion size and quality, this place was pretty lacking. The size was probably exactly the same as a small as BF, and the quality was honestly about the same if not slightly worse. The fries were mushy and surprise, had less BBQ sauce for the pulled pork. There WAS a lot of gravy though I will admit. The other upside about this place is that it follows health code to a T. The wraps my friends got looked pretty good so maybe next time... but not until next semester. read more

I took my girlfriend to the Point Grill one time about 10 months ago. The service was the worst I have ever had at any restaurant I've been to. When the waiter brought our food, he just dropped it on our table and kept on walking. He never stopped moving and it wasn't like he was carrying other plates for another table. I've never seen that before and we both looked at each other dumbfounded. My girlfriend had to go walk over to the kitchen and ask the cook for ketchup because the waiter never came back. We never had our drinks refilled, and we had to grab salt and pepper shakers, cutlery, and napkins from a nearby table because we didn't have any. I could keep going but I would prefer to keep this brief. Both of us couldn't believe that a waiter could be this bad. This was the first time I have not tipped the waiter even a single penny. We have never gone back to the Point Grill and never will go back. It's a real shame because the location is so convenient and it is one of the only places open on weekends. If it wasn't for the abysmal service I'm sure I would have frequented the restaurant. In conversations with some of my friends, it seems that their experiences have been hit or miss. Some of my friends have stories almost exactly the same as mine, while others have had a mix of mediocre or decent experiences depending on which day they go. read more

I wasn't impressed by the Point Grill until they recently changed their menu. I have been a big fan of their service and now their food is also good. Try their fish taco and you won't regret the 11$ you have spent. Their green curry was quite nice as well. If i do not live in UBC as a student who find himself hungry at 9 pm and don't want to get a delivery, i would never step into this place again. Expensive and Bad food. The meat in burger is dry, salty and charcoaled. The so called chinese style "Kong Pau" chicken is nowhere close what you can get in a chinese fast food restaurant and they still charge you 13+tips. The "thai" salad is a joke. It's more precisely to be described as noodles in diluted coconut milk with random vegetables. The only thing that is not overpriced is the fried chicken wings, but remember do not choose the "lemon grass " sauce. read more

It's the closest restaurant from the wreck beach, but I don't think this place suits wreck beach crowd anyways. This is for ubc kids to enjoy really. If you are able to avoid the Point Grill, do so! The Point is overpriced and like to price jab at the lazy students who don't have time to make their own meal. Their yam fries don't even come with proper chipotle mayo (a necessity for good fries) and instead come the a poor jalapeño substitute.
