Set right in downtown Davidson across from Davidson College, the atmosphere strikes that perfect balance--lively but still intimate. The menu evolves frequently, so what we saw differed from what's posted online--but that turned out to be part of the charm. Everything sounded appealing, and choosing wasn't difficult. Our server stood out immediately--deeply knowledgeable and able to walk through each dish with impressive detail, right down to preparation. It's easy to see why Kindred earned "Recommended" status in the inaugural Michelin Guide American South and continues to be recognized for top-tier hospitality and cuisine. We started with the Little Gem lettuce salad--fresh, bright, and elevated by the perfect crunch and subtle richness of pistachios. For my entrée, I had the rigatoni with guanciale, English peas, and pecorino sardo--rich, balanced, and full of flavor without being heavy. A memorable meal all around.

I…read moretypically like a fruit chutney with pork chops, but I didn't think this needed the blackberry mostarda. The polenta was tasty. My favorite part was gnawing on the bone at the end. Duck Fat Potatoes (4/5): Lightly crispy exterior with a soft, fluffy interior. The crab fat mayo was mostly savory with a bit of tanginess and paired nicely with the potatoes. Squid Ink Conchiglie (4/5): The pasta texture was PERFECT. Very chewy. The shrimp was decent (bonus points for not having to peel them). There was too much sauce though, and it was too acidic. Pickle-Brined Fried Quail (4/5): More crispy than crunchy. The meat was tender, but maybe too tender? I would've preferred chicken. The chili oil was VERY peanut forward. I liked the wasabi tobiko. It added the flavor without the spice. The green garlic slaw helped cut through the oil so that was a good addition. Wagyu Beef Tartare (4/5): The beef was good and had a nice texture, but the overall dish was also too acidic. I liked the added texture of the thin, crispy sunchokes. Bread Service (3/5): A slightly better version of Hawaiian rolls with some nice flaky salt on top. Milk Bread Pudding (4/5): Had a nice saltiness to it. Lots of butterscotch flavor. The crusty parts were my favorite but the inside was very soft. The ice cream was too melty on top. Maybe it would've been better on the side? RATING SYSTEM 5 - Great (Need to get this again) 4 - Good (Would get this again) 3 - Ok (Might give this another shot) 2 - Not Good (Won't get this again) 1 - Bad (Telling people to avoid this)

She had prosecco; I had the delightful (& generous!) Pain Killer cocktail pictured. We ordered asparagus & goat cheese grits to share. Both were good, especially the goat cheese grits! I'll admit, can be a bit pricey, but it's downtown Davidson?- what do the other reviewers expect when they walk in the door? (IFKYK) Note- The couple next to us had a pair of smoked classic cocktails that looked/smelled amazing (can't remember what they were). They came out in a box ("chest") full of what was presumably smoking wood chips- divine. We will definitely try this next time. Also, these guys own Mandolino's Artisan Pizza across the street. Every pizza and salad I've ever tried there was excellent.

Then we pretty much finished our meals by the time she checked back. My friend can't eat meat and was neglected to be told that the side dish had bacon in it. When we explained to our server that she couldn't have it, a replacement was not offered.. so she was unable to eat half her dish and left hungry. My burger was undercooked and the aïoli on it was more like a thick chunky sauce than a spread. Pretty gross. I will also add that this was not a single occurrence. My friend went here on another night a few weeks ago and said the service was just as bad...... Would not recommend this place at all... Not sure why it's always so busy. Hard Pass.

The inside had a really fun vibe and decor, but we ended up sitting outside on the patio since we had our dogs with us. Super relaxed atmosphere and a great place to hang out for lunch. You order food and drinks at the counter and they bring everything out to your table. I originally wanted sweet tea (sadly they didn't have any ), so I switched it up and ordered their spicy Bloody Mary instead... and WOW. Holy moly, it was GOOD. Easily the highlight of the meal for me. We tried a few different things -- the tuna wontons, burrata salad with shrimp, panini, and potato wedges. The presentation was great and everything was decent, but the food itself was just okay overall. Atmosphere and drinks definitely carried the experience for me. Giving this one 4 stars because the vibe was really nice, patio was dog-friendly, and that Bloody Mary deserves its own shoutout.

We were seated and expressly told a specific waitress would be taking care of us then nothing, I mean absolutely nothing thereafter!!! No complementary water, no bread basket not a single person saying someone would be right with us - just complete radio silence. We looked around and realized we were the only two people of color in the restaurant as well. Finally, a young lady started approaching, and we assumed she was headed our way instead she began catering to the table across the aisle from us a table that was seated a full 10 minutes after we were!!!! She introduced herself to them and lo and behold. It was the very same waitress we were told would be caring for us. We assumed she would get to us next, but she did not. We waited five more minutes and then walked out! On our way out. I summarized our experience with the manager, a very pregnant young lady. She apologized profusely and nearly begged us to return and allow her to personally service, but my husband was completely OVER it. This was our anniversary we chose this place to celebrate and the night was now ruined. I have never used the race card in my life, but as I explained to the manager the complete lack of service and failure to even acknowledge our presence in the building felt very intentional. The manager did gift us a generous gift card, which I still have yet to use. Maybe I will maybe I won't but the damage to our special night was already done.
