I have so many good memories of this place when it was under the Woodlands banner, as this was almost certainly the best barbecue in the High Country in those days. The Pedalin' Pig may reside in the same location that Woodlands once occupied, and the layout may not be different, but nothing feels genuine about the food offered here. The quality and flavor of the offerings seem equivalent to pre-packaged barbecue and sides you'd pick up in a supermarket. I must not be the only one unimpressed, for this place used to be quite popular but now I rarely find many diners present here. Lower demand may be helping the speed of service, and the staff members seem pleasant, but I wonder if such a landmark is destined to fade into failure. Finding that Woodlands magic would be a great way to recover, but it seems unlikely. For the record, I've also eaten at Pedalin' Pig locations in Boone and Banner Elk, and I've never been impressed by them either. If you like those, then maybe the food here will suit you fine. But if you prefer the Woodlands of old, friends, you'd best just rely on your memories rather than trying what's left behind. read more

It seems like every new bbq place I go to ups the ante a bit. That was my experience at the Pedalin' Pig. The ambiance was great, location was perfect (off the main drag) and most importantly, the food and service were 110%. We started off with freshly-fried pork cracklin's that were still popping when the server brought them to our table. The queso was amazing. Combined with a Blowing Rock Cloudy IPA, the flavors of hoppy beer, fresh crackling and cheddary queso combined to form a god-tier combination. I literally felt high off this combination. The fun didn't stop there. My wife and I split a fowl play, a combo of savory, tender smoked Turkey, tender pulled pork (with just the right amount of bbq flavor) and some of the best smoked wings I've ever tasted. The greens on the side were stewed with smoky bacon, with just the perfect touch of vinegar. Not too sour, not too salty, just right. This is now our go-to when we're out playing in the mountains. We had lunch here on a Saturday and both the food and service were really enjoyable. Our server, Christina, was great and made sure we were enjoying our meal and had refills, etc. We all loved the crispy corn nuggets for an appetizer. Others in my group ordered the pulled pork plate and pulled pork sandwich; both had sweet potato fries and bbq coleslaw and one also had hush puppies. I ordered the pork belly plate with regular coleslaw, cornbread and mac & cheese. All of us enjoyed our pork. The other two liked the smoky flavor of the pork and the pieces of bark, and I loved the "crispy" pork belly (not mushy, but not hard to bite into or chewy). The mac & cheese and sweet potato fries were excellent sides. The cornbread and coleslaws were the only lackluster points which could have used more flavor. At this point Woodlands barbecue is an institution! They were there when I attended Appalachian State University 30 years ago and they're still there. Actually, they were already very well known to the students and locals in the area even before that. Their barbecue is as good as anybody's with a fantastic smoke flavor that's to die for! Best BBQ in the area! Operating through COVID and doing it well. This place is organized and speedy. You can tell everyone who works there cares about their job and customers. Tables were set up for social distancing, the servers wore masks, they had hand sanitizer everywhere, barriers protected both staff and customers while checking out, etc. We had a small wait, but, once inside, we're served quickly and the food was great. I wish I hadn't split a BBQ plate with my husband because it left me wanting more!! We had ribs, pulled pork, fried okra... everything was delicious. Meat was tender and smoky. That portion size was more than enough. We probably could have added a third person. It comes with two breads -- choose corn bread or hush puppies. Because I like variety, I asked for a split of both. I must admit that I don't normally like hush puppies but I do like Woodlands'. We also get four sides. I wanted the collard greens and fried okra. The other sides were sweet potato fries and cole slaw. The sampler contained ribs, pulled pork, sausage, and turkey. The ribs were not fall off the bone type of ribs so was disappointed there. Pulled pork was good but just a tad dry. I would have liked more options in the bbq sauce. Only two options in ketchup bottles on the table - spicy and not. I definitely needed to add bbq sauce to the pulled pork. The turkey was not your fresh, out of the oven Thanksgiving slice but more like a store bought slice of deli. It was still good tasting. My girlfriend and I were in town for a friends daughters wedding. We were craving some thing in the pig category and stopped in the Pedalin pig for a bite. It was a little bit pricey, but we found out why; the portions were big enough for two meals. I would also suggest you not come here unless you want good food served from a very pleasant staff, and are ready to take some thing home with you. All said, we had a great experience, and the food was very good. I fancy myself a barbecue aficionado. I had standard pulled pork. It was very good and my girlfriend had brisket with great flavor. We enjoyed the pulled pork shoulder platter and brisket platter; both were delicious with the pulled pork shoulder winning in our taste test. Make sure to get the hush puppies and collard greens as a side. I also went with the mac-and-cheese since they were out of potato salad; my guess is the potato salad is excellent, but I will admit that the mac-and-cheese needs some work in the Spice Department. It was probably room temperature at best and the end pieces they gave were so hard. When your BBQ meat isn't tender, you gotta wonder. Pork was good. It had good taste, but no sauce even though they mentioned they would put sauce on the side for us. Again though, cold. Collards were okay. Corn on the cob was cold. What's going on with food safety? Yummy yummy! We all wanted barbecue for lunch. The family sent us out for barbecue last week. Half of them are vegetarians. We weren't aware of the limited menu and small portions but can appreciate it because it is a barbecue place. At home we are used to huge portions of vegetables with our orders. Here we literally got three tablespoons each of beans, collards, and cole slaw. This came as a surprise especially for the vegetarians at home. I used to be excited to go to woodlands. Now I will never go back. The barbecue was decent at best. The hush puppies were good, but the honey butter was frozen. We didn't get offered a drink menu. They had one person running the counter, seating people and serving people because there wasn't anyone there other than us. We weren't offered any sauce for our barbecue and had to ask. On a positive note, the sweet potato fries were indeed good, but were a bit cold by the time they got to the table. I don't know if I will be back until a lot changes here. This time, I stumbled into a place that used to be one of my favorite BBQ joints in the Carolinas, Woodlands. Now under a different name it was time to see if it retained the same quality of smoked southern BBQ or went too far south. I got one of their sampler dishes so I'll just break it down individually. The pulled pork absolutely delightful. Tender, flavorful, and left me wanting more. This was the first thing I tried on my plate but spoiler alert, the pulled pork was really the only thing I'd waste precious belly space on here. The ribs had less meat than a vegetarian burger. If these ribs were a movie, they'd be a low-budget indie flick where nothing happens. The flavor was so 'meh', it made me think about opening up my own restaurant since this was considered good food. The smoked sausage was pretty solid. This sausage was the culinary equivalent of Gordon Ramsey being pleasantly surprised by good food in an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. It was so good I actually craved smoked sausage the next day so made some for one of our holiday dinners. Our waitress was amazing though. She was on top of all the customers and made sure to check in on us frequently. I don't recall seeing another waitress but she was crushing it handling four tables. Final Verdict, slapping this place with the FNL label - it's a First and Last Visit for me folks. In conclusion, honestly if I had ate here without any previous knowledge of what used to be at this location, I'd probably give it a three. But the fact that this used to be a great BBQ place that had huge portions of food and now is an average BBQ place, I just can't let that go. read more

Dropped in for lunch on Sunday after a hike. 15 minute wait for a table. No big deal. Seated, and a few minutes passed before our server arrived. We were seated upstairs and noticed a LARGE group had been seated before us, downstairs. We ordered drinks as soon as our server arrived, and when he returned with them, immediately placed food orders. 50 minutes later, our lunch arrived. Our server became more scarce as time went by. There apparently was a couple there planning a wedding rehearsal dinner or the like, that garnered the attention of staff and management. Also a random lady who walked in with her dog. This is not a place for a dog. I finally had enough. Got up, approached the lady who I thought was the manager. She'd been standing 6 feet away, watching the rehearsal dinner proceedings, had made eye contact with our party and had seen that we had no food, for quite a while. I said "We've been waiting for food for 45 minutes." She said "where's your table?" I pointed-"we're standing at it". She said "let me go check" and disappeared. I went to the restroom (usually that's when food arrives to the table...when I walk away). Came back, nothing. 5+ minutes later our server arrived with our food. We never saw the manager again. No apologies, from her, just a "the kitchen got slammed" from the server. Food was good but $15 for brisket on a brioche bun, and a bowl of leafy collard greens? I miss Woodlands :( read more

Visited with the family and I have to say the bbq here (aka chopped pork - what should be the star of the show) was terrible. There was little smoky flavor and the tough muscle hadn't broken down. I believe they are cutting corners and not letting it cook past 200°. It was barely edible. Woodlands BBQ was recommended to me by a friend who is an Appalachian State alum. It was a good recommendation because I really enjoyed our lunch here. It hit the spot. The full name of this restaurant is The Woodlands Barbecue & Pickin' Parlor. It's located on Blowing Rock's main drag, Valley Blvd (US Route 321). If you can't find parking out front, there are plenty of spaces in the back. This is a fairly spacious BBQ restaurant with two levels of dining. Seating is all at picnic tables with a tray of sauces and a roll of paper towels at every table. Unless you're sitting against the wall, your seat will not have a back. The restaurant is clean and has somewhat of a vintage feel to it. It's got a mishmash of decor, from pig-themed paintings to banners for App State's three national championships in college football (I-AA/FCS). There's a big screen TV downstairs and the picnic tables can be combined for large groups (there was a birthday party going on downstairs during our visit). The atmosphere is casual. Woodlands offers a good variety of BBQ including pork, brisket, chicken, turkey, and pork ribs. You can have the pork or brisket served chopped or sliced. You can get chopped chicken, 1/2 a chicken, a grilled chicken breast, blackened or jerk chicken, and wings. Like other BBQ restaurants, you can get a BBQ sandwich, tray, or plate. The plate comes with three sides and bread or hush puppies. The prices are very reasonable with sandwiches, which come with chips and a pickle, costing $5.25 to $8.95 each; trays with slaw and hush puppies at $5.95 to $7.95 each; and plates at $8.95 to $10.95 each. You can get $1 off BBQ plates from 11am to 2pm, Monday through Friday. You can also order meat and sides in bulk. In addition to BBQ, Woodlands serves burgers, tacos, and burritos. There were six of us. We split into pairs and ordered three Hogs per pair. "The Hog" comes with two pork ribs, two jumbo wings, a tray of chopped pork, a tray of chopped brisket, three sides, and bread or hush puppies. At $19.95 per Hog, it's a great deal. I ordered our hog with BBQ slaw (a.k.a. North Carolina vinegar-based red slaw), fried okra, collards, and hush puppies. The meat is served on a paper-lined tray and the veggies are served on a separate disposable plate. Woodlands has two kinds of coleslaw: what they call "regular slaw," which is mayo-based chopped slaw and the aforementioned BBQ slaw. Our server mixed up our slaw order and accidentally served us regular slaw. She ended up giving us BBQ slaw on the house so it was like our Hog came with four sides and hush puppies. It was a lot of food for two people. I would rank the BBQ as follows, from most favorite to least favorite: 1. Chopped brisket 2. Chopped pork 3. Pork ribs 4. Jumbo wings I recommend the chopped brisket and chopped pork. Chopped (or pulled) pork is something you typically see at a BBQ restaurant, but chopped brisket (beef) isn't something I've encountered much. Usually, it's sliced. I thought both the brisket and pork had pretty good flavor on their own and no sauce was needed. The two were very similar. Both had tender, appetizing consistency with the brisket having a bit more chew. Both also were served with bits of outer edges which I liked because of the additional smoky flavor added by the char. The brisket and pork were served in paper trays. I tried the house BBQ sauce with the brisket and pork and it was A-OK. The ribs weren't bad, but far from the best I've had. The ribs were slathered in a relatively thick sauce. Each rib was nice and meaty, but not soft nor fall-off-the-bone. Ribs don't necessarily have to be fall-off-the-bone to be good, but these seemed a tad too chewy. Like the ribs, the jumbo wings had plenty of meat on them. The wings tasted fine, but they would have been better if they were juicier. If I ever came back, I'd be willing to give the ribs another shot, but I doubt I'd order the wings again. I thought all of the sides were tasty. Here are the sides I tried, ranked from most favorite to least favorite: 1. Fried okra 2. Regular slaw 3. BBQ slaw 4. Collards 5. Fries I wouldn't say any single side was outstanding, but they were solid all-around. I like how finely chopped both the regular slaw and the BBQ slaw were. Compared to collards at most other BBQ restaurants I've tried, Woodlands' collards weren't as flavorful. I love greens though, so I still enjoyed them, especially with the table-supplied Texas Pete Pepper Sauce. Woodlands' greens are big and leafy. The fries were home-cut and par for the course. The hush puppies were crispy and delicious. They're oblonged-shaped. Rolls and hot or mild cornbread are the alternatives to hush puppies. The staff here is friendly. We had a sweet server. For some reason, it took a long time for us to get our food even though the restaurant wasn't very busy. I'm not sure what was up with that. PORTION SIZE: Post-COVID, you pay $12 for a brisket plate with 2 sides vs 3 sides like before and you basically get 2 spoonfuls of each item and a roll. Very disappointing. Poor value - You get more at a cookout for $5. FLAVOR: used to be delicious but has really fallen off. Flavors are kind of bland. Brisket doesn't look like the picture and wasn't sure what we were even eating. Baked beans and green beans were kind of bland.
