I'm on my way to find tasty morsels in Vancouver and this is my first stop. I ordered Curry Beef patty and Chicken patty. The curry beef has a lot of kick, a tad bit salty but overall tasty, I would rate it 8/10. The chicken turns out to be curried as well, now this one doesnt really have a taste, a bit bland and curry taste a bit overpowering as well, I would rate it 6/10. Would I come back? Return or not return? Sadly, not return. Nice people, great prices, interesting counter set-up. Maybe one of the worst beef patties I've ever had. It's edible, but just not good. Am from the West Indies and that may/not make me an expert, but have also had beef patties in most major cities in North America. Too doughy, heavy bread like, and the beef filling is more salty than flavorful. Lacks any form of being delicate and tastes like it came off an assembly line, and a not good one at that. They have a wonderful crust, it nestles the beef inside nicely. The crust has good structure being strong yet a slight crunch. The winner is the curried beef patty, it has a nice amount of well seasoned moist minced beef. I bought a dozen of the mild beef but found them to be remarkably bland. Spinach with a bit of cheese was good. The veggie patty is a pass as it was bland and texture gummy. Service was quick and friendly in this tiny take out spot. read more

This shop is nostalgic. I came here often when I was in high school. Since moving away, I don't go often. I came back last weekend and the mild chicken and beef tasted just like I remembered. My favourites are: Spicy Beef, Spinach & Cheese, Chicken and the vegetarian!! Love these patties! My favorite is the curried chicken. I go every once in a while to buy a 12 pack bag of them.

Had the vegetarian patty, well actually 2 in one seating. It was piping hot as in temperature wise. I picked it up and actually waited 10 mins to eat it and to my surprised, it still felt like it just came out of the oven. It was very tasty and well seasoned. The crust is pretty perfect to me!!! A friend raved about this shop and so I went to get some patties to try. This was my second time trying Jamaican patties. I bought the chicken, hot beef and spinach patties. I did not care much about them. Maybe because I did not reheat them in the air fryer or oven. So the crust was not super crispy. The spinach reminded me of the greek spanakopita. The chicken and hot beef were ok. A bit spicy but really nothing special. I may get some patties if I am in the area but it is not a place to make a special trip for. I'm half Jamaican and grew up eating patties and coco bread for breakfast lunch and dinner. When I go to Vancouver I always go to Jamaican restaurants to get patties. Most restaurants sell out of patties by noon or early afternoon. I was very excited to find the Patty shop. The dough isn't as thick as a traditional patty, but they are very tasty. I really like the curry chicken Patty. I had the spicy beef as well. It was also very good. I like the Patty Shop, and will support every time I go to the Vancouver. I highly recommend the Patty shop if you want tasty patties. Traditional Jamaican restaurants only make 8-12 patties. Half of them are sold by the time the come out of the oven, and you're left with only vegetable patties. Hell no! read more

First time to visit this place after seeing "best cheap places to eat in Vancouver". Parking is a bit of a challenge. First time eating Jamaican Patties too, so I have nothing to compare it with. I do not eat spicy food as I sweat right away. So, the Patties are good but because of the spiciness, I wont visit too often. Price is very reasonably and they are served faassstt... I let the person behind me order first as I was deciding. To my horror, they were ordering for their office. About 40-50 patties. After taking their order, the lady went back to prepare their order. I was thinking I'd be waiting for at least 15 minutes, but no! she was out with their order in about 5 minutes, when its my time, the lady was out with my order, hot in 2 minutes. What do they have behind their cooking area? A 30 foot oven? Overall recommended as the dough is flavourful, beef, chicken are tender. Patty is juicy. Will try again by ordering the non spicy patties. Long line up behind me when I received my order. Seems to be a very popular place. read more

Stopped in at The Patty Shop recently as I was leaving the Motor Vehicle branch across the street. It is a very small, very basic take-out only place with a menu on the wall so it's easy to see what's on offer. However, the goods are kept in the back so you can't actually see what you might get. They have quite a variety of options so there should be something for everyone. I ordered a regular beef patty and a curried beef at $2.75 each. The price is reasonable although the patties are not large by any stretch of the imagination. A good snack size, I'd say. The pastry was surprisingly flaky and better than I expected. Patties I've had in the past had rather stodgy pastry, nothing to recommend them, as though the pastry was the least of the baker's concerns. The regular beef patty was very tasty and enjoyable, but I regretted buying the curry beef as it was too spicy and I couldn't finish it. I think it's generally too spicy for a regular Canadian who's not used to spicy foods. However, I know many people who love their spice so it no doubt has lots of fans. The curry flavour was nice; too bad it was too hot for me to enjoy it and I had to throw it out. I would go back and order again, just making sure to get non-spicy patties. The two patties were $6.01 with tax and that's reasonable, all things considered these days, where a restaurant sandwich runs about $20. read more

I've been told this has the best patties in the city. I bought a Roti instead of a patties but it was good too. I have to return and try their Patty another time. This is a little place with an order counter and a kitchen in the back. There is no place to eat onsite, not even a counter to stand and eat. So take out only. Be aware they only accept cash or cheque, not even debit! They only sold Chicken or Vegetable Roti. Some told me they used to sell Beef and Goat. I didn't ask if they changed their menu or simply ran out by 5:00pm. They close at 6:30pm so you have to plan to get there early if you want to buy for dinner. There are lots of selections for patties. They even sell frozen ones. There is a drinks vending machine. It is possible to parking along the street for free for a short while. read more

This is the place to go to get ready to eat jamaican patties at a really cheap price, from around $3.00 each. Depending on your taste, you can get a mild to a really hot patty and the patties are so flavourful. They have mild beef, hot beef, curry beef, vegetable, spinach, and chicken. Over the years, they have expanded and also have chicken roti and vegetable roti. The awesome thing is that you can buy a dozen, freeze it, and those days that your not into cooking, you can pop a patty into the oven and it still tastes amazing. The Patty Shop has been on my list of places to try for ages but I'm never in this area. It's located in between The Bakeshop and Ridge Garden Restaurant. We dropped in on a Wednesday afternoon (around 1:30pm). This is the definition of a hole in the wall. No seats, strictly take out only. The decor is fading but the posters will make you laugh. Ring the bell for service! They only sell two things: patties and roti. Found out that they don't make the roti themselves but do everything else. There's half a dozen flavours to choose from along with pizza (Wednesday only) and taco (Thursday only). You can buy a frozen dozen for home ($24.00 to $26.00). - Hot beef ($2.57) - heat is very subtle but the beef was moist and savoury. I didn't love the patty itself; it's not as flaky, buttery and rich as others I've had in the past. - Pizza ($2.71) - we tried out their Wednesday special. Reminded me of a pizza pocket but with real tomato sauce and pieces of ham. It was okay but my least favourite of the three we tried. - Chicken ($2.86) - this was my favourite. Curry chicken and potato. Well seasoned and good flavour. Hits the spot and it's cheap. Next time I'll get a dozen for when I'm too lazy to cook. Cash only. 3.5 stars. read more

Best Jamaican patties ever. Took 3 dozen frozen back to LA. Flaky crust, stuffed to the brim of spicy 6/10 hot beef - curry beef. Not bready and thin like most commercial and prepared patties. Great Yelp community recommendation. We were looking for some quick and tasty eats as we were killing time in the area. The Kerrisdale / Dunbar neighbourhood are full of sushi spots, diners, and cafes - but not a lot of selection otherwise. The Jamaican patty pastries looked like a great alternative options. The patties are Pizza Pop pocket sized. They are not super thick and doughy though. The puff pastry is light and flaky - and doesn't feel oily. We tried two each of the Veggie, Chicken, Spinach, Mild Beef and Hot Beef. The chicken and vegetable ones were seasoned with curry. The others were pretty basic. I'd recommend the Chicken and the Vegetable for sure. Our kids really like the spinach one as well. The Hot Beef was not too Hot. We also picked up a Chicken Roti that was frozen. As far as I'm concerned this is the ONLY place in Vancouver to get a good patty. Staff: excellent, friendly and efficient. The patty: always fresh, pastry flaky and the filling always well seasoned and flavourful. My favourite patty is the curry. It has a little heat nothing unbearable. It's always well seasoned and moist on the inside and pastry very flakey. You can order ones ready for eating or buy them by the dozen frozen. I believe they have chicken, veggies, taco and the traditional beef mild, beef hot and curry. Wish I had one now. Yum! read more

I used to live in Toronto when I was a kid and remember my parents always bringing home these delicious, golden, Jamaican patties. I've had such a fond memory of those particular patties that it's been really hard for me to find similar ones that compare. Until now. Enter The Patty Shop. I've heard all the rage about this spot for a few months now but haven't had the opportunity to pay them a visit, until last week. I just happened to be in the area and saw them pop up on Yelp, so I wandered on over. This spot is definitely a pick up and go kinda place. No tables, chairs, anything, but I'm into it. Also, it's cash only and there's no ATM, so come prepared with those paper $$$'s. They have a few different flavours - beef, hot beef, chicken, spinach, vegetarian, pizza and taco. Yup you read those last two right... they do have a pizza and taco flavour - only catch is that those two only come in a frozen bag rather than freshly made. I had a few family members in town who were staying at my place (also big fans of Jamaican patties), so I picked up 2 dozen patties - an assortment of curry, regular beef and hot beef. Wowza, I'm such a fan of all 3 of them. I think next time I'd go for the chicken or spinach instead of the curry though. With other Jamaican patties I've had the meat tasted (almost) artificial, but these ones tasted fresh and perfectly cooked. Plus the dough was perfectly flaky. I'm very excited to come back again to try the pizza and taco patties. Also my belly is very happy that I've found a local Jamaican patty spot to fulfill all my cravings. read more

For a time warp back to 1970s Jamaica and some life-changing patties, head right on down to this hole in the wall. I've been coming here for over 2 decades now, and they have not changed ANYTHING in the shop at all. Right down the faded posters, and the bulletin board full of business cards. I remember seeing the same ones in elementary school! Okay, I lied. The patties were $1.15 in 1994, and in 2011 they're $2 each for the basic (mild beef) one. For service, ring the bell on the counter. Same bell after 17 years. Just so you know, there is no seating here. It's really just a food counter hidden inside a physical store. With that said, there are some nice flower beds in front of the adjacent stores where you can sit on the ledges. The stores all have canopies too, so you're in the shade. You can buy individual hot ones as a snack, or you can buy frozen dozens. The hot ones were a HUGE part of my growing up, though now I simply buy the frozen ones. Every time I eat one, it brings a stupid grin to my face. They have several flavours. If you've never had one before, go for the basic "mild beef" to get a feel. My personal favourite are the Pizza, and Curry Chicken. The Pizza ones ain't no Pillsbury Pizza Pop, so don't even think of drawing that comparison. As for the curry chicken.. pure crack. I've had patties all over the place and no other place can match these ones. Not even close. What else can I say? In case you missed it the 1st time, the patties here are LIFE-CHANGING. I'm serious. Absolutely love this place! There aren't too many places where you can get a freshly made Jamaican patty in the city. The Patty Shop offers different flavors, with my favorite being the hot beef, as I like the added spice to my patty. I've also tried the mild and curry beef, as well as the vegetarian. Needless to say, all of them are perfect; crispy/flakey on the outside, stuffed with a tasty filling on the inside. They're served to you warm and fresh. Last time I visited I ordered the cocktail patties in advance, which worked really well for an Xmas party. I also ended up getting a large one to enjoy there as the delicious smell of the fresh ones were torturing me; I couldn't not get a fresh one! Was craving Jamaican patties and remember my friend had once ordered from this place. We ordered the chicken and vegetarian patties to try, and they were pretty flavorful but just not what I am used too from back home. The spinach one is made with beef lard for the pastry so refrained from ordering that one as do not eat beef. We asked what the outside pastry is made from and she thought it was regular flour, as we knew it was not corn as the Jamaican patties from back home.
