I hadn't been to Red Rum since wayyyy before covid, so I was excited to meet up with a friend for happy hour there last week. Red Rum is still the quintessential tiki bar, with mid-century vibes and lots of tiki accents (including my favorite: the immortal drink umbrella). We arrived just as they opened (happy hour starts at 4!) and enjoyed a couple of cocktails and a hearty order of fries on a pretty quiet weekday afternoon. While not the bar's fault, their downtown Bham block (even during broad daylight!) has become pretty sketchy since my last visit. Unfortunately, some of that crowd periodically stopped in to pay cash for a strong, quick shot (or two or three) of alcohol while we were there. The happy hour here is great, and the food program, previously a little sketch, is back in a good way. The entree salads are our favorite, especially the tender pulled pork and jerk chicken options, with the delicious plantain chips. You have nothing, nothing, nothing better to do on a free weekday afternoon than this, believe me. If opportunity knocks, take a little trip to the land of rum and bongo drums. 1 star review with the caveat of having our situation wonderfully remedied by the kind blonde lady working the bar. We were originally sat by a nice gentleman in a pink tutu suit and costume. His customer service was amazing. And albeit we did wait a bit long to be served we could understand, it being a holiday night, that it was quite busy. After about 20 minutes of waiting and finally being served, our server was polite enough during our initial interaction. The bigger issues really came into play when we were brought Coconut Prawns, which we had planned on ordering in the first place, and which I'd thought my partner had ordered already. The reason we found out about the mix-up, was because I went to go place a second order for sweet potato fries, that's when the mistake was realized. Regardless, when notified of the mistake, I tried to let our server know we were sorry for the mix-up and we were planning to add it to our tab anyways. I understood her frustration was the fact the food had already been eaten, however it was partly the kitchens fault for not double checking who it went to as well, and we had already apologized, so what more could we do. That did not justify her thereafter trying to argue, make us feel bad, or talk badly about us within earshot vicinity. Especially when it's so loud we shouldn't even be able to hear her saying anything, and yet we did. After all of this she walks off, and begins to talk poorly and unkindly about us to the bartender she's next to, all the while, looking over at us in a shameful manner. And then proceeds to never enter the sweet potato fries as well, which we found out about after notifying the sweet blonde lady we mentioned, about our poor experience, how awful we felt about the mix-up, and my partner feeling shamed for something she had no control in. She was short wearing a green dress, had a brunette natural bob, and an upper arm sleeve. And she should be ashamed of herself. It's dissappointing and disgusting to try to make your patrons feel bad for your own mistakes because you lack responsibility and self accountability. By the way the people who ordered the prawns were sat right behind my Fiancé in the photo, and they themselves joked and laughed with us about it. They were kind and forgave us as well. We will be giving this place one more chance in the future, as our last two visits before this were amazing. Thank you again to the blonde waitress who remedied the situation. And she did give us the prawns for free even though we were willing to pay for them, because she knew the mix-up was a human mistake. Do better. Gomez and Morticia were so fun to be! read more

We came to Red Rum as a party of 8 at about 5:00 PM on Saturday. They had just opened so it was easy to find seating. I love their decor and their ambiance! I am not the biggest drinker of rum, so I ordered a drink recommended by our waitress, which she dubbed "Orange creamsicle". Love the ambiance of this place. Been here several times and gotta say I am conflicted. I order the coconaut A LOT, until this last visit, was great! Not sure what happened, but it came out kinda brown not creamy and very sour. The plantains for the salad were just cut in half and not pressed into tostones. Not so starchy goodness. I have been to Redrum many times through the years. I've always had a good time until this very week. As an adult human I rarely find time to grab a drink in the evening hours. On Thursday my girlfriend and I went into your establishment to grab a singular drink. We sat at the bar. We sat waiting for at least 10 minutes. Not a single server/ bartender acknowledged us. Someone at a table behind us came up to the well area around the bar ( which was literally 5 feet away) from our seats so they could order, at which I finally asked a bartender if they required us to order at the well. I made sure to show my distaste. We got our own menu and my friend went to order. This was just the beginning of our ill-fated experience. I have asked others about their experiences lately and it would seem we are not the only ones. I would love the chance to discuss the happenings. The Chi Chi drink is DELECTABLE. Absolutely fantastic. PERFECTLY blended to be a creamy-esque, frothy coconut-y beverage. The blend technique is absolutely to be praised. Now on to the real experience the cocktails were actually good fresh juice cute presentations we had to rum based Trader Vic's style cocktails both for tasty and one was served with a a flaming lime. They do serve some food I had a veggie sandwich everything else was pork kind of Cuban style tasty. Apparently I had no idea what a tiki bar is because I was surprised at the layout and decor of this place (I was thinking more tropical and bright). But after doing some research I found out that this is exactly how tiki bars look. So 5/5 stars for decor! The drinks were awesome. My friend got a blended rum drink that came with a flaming lime. It was beautifully crafted and the bartender was really good at her job!! The food...the three of us split an order of chicken wings, chicken empandillas and sweet potato fries. The Empandillas and fries were really good, with the fries being my favorite. In fact, they were so flavorful and crunchy I think they are some of my favorite sweet potato fries in town! The wings were a disappointment. Almost no seasoning and they were rubbery in texture, as if they had been frozen for a while. All in all, I probably wouldn't come back but that is due to my particular preferences. The decor kind of creeped me out. I love this tiki bar!! Blended cocktails are my favorite cocktails, and Red Rum has many to choose from. I've had several of them, but my favorite has to be the Chi Chi, a piña colada with vodka instead of rum. It's super tasty, a perfect balance of sweet, creamy and tangy. I never thought I was one to particularly care about garnishes, but Red Rum makes them so special! Drinks are often garnished several kinds of fruit and are complete with a skull topped toothpick. Ask them to serve your with a flaming lime if it is offered with your drink! Although I have yet to order it, I have even seen a drink that comes with half a banana cut to look like a dolphin, beyond cute! The atmosphere here is great. Classic tiki decor with little references to The Shining all around the bar. Service is always very friendly, but it is often a little slow. When it's busy it can be a chore to get someone to take your order. They also sell food here, which I haven't ordered yet. Red Rum is committed to the full tiki bar experience and I am here for it! The place is dark with blacked out windows creating a true atmosphere. They have Polynesian themed decorations, drinks and a killer playlist. I appreciate the no TV situation as well. The drink menu is heavy on fruity Mai Tai, Zombie and other fun drinks served in cool glasses. They have beer on tap and a full bar as well to make more straight up drinks. The menu has decent apps and sandwiches which even satisfied the Vegan in our group. We had chips and guacamole which were good as well as Cuban and vegan style Bahn Mi. While there was a clear attention to detail, from lighting a sugar cube (?) on fire to the tiki/tropical decorations everywhere, it contrasted with the empty bar. I've been to the Redrum on five separate occasions, and each time I couldn't find anything to complain about. The service has always been helpful, kind, and quick. The drinks are made with fresh fruit juices, and the food that I've had has been tasty. The atmosphere inside is really cool and dark, kind of like a bar in a David Lynch movie, and that's a huge plus in my book. Fabulous cocktails! I had the Coconaut which was just as tasty as it was fun (garnished with a flaming sugar cube!). My friend had a Painkiller which is finished with freshly ground nutmeg which made it 110%! The Hawaiian decor is tastefully done. Bartenders were friendly and provided excellent service. As a few others have said, extremely slow service. Don't come in looking to be paid attention to. A group of 8 of us came in, took over 30 minutes to even get our orders, another 20 to get the drinks, and then our server never asked if we even wanted another round of drinks. We had to ask for checks, and had to walk our cards behind the bar since nobody paid attention. Not worth spending 2 hours for one drink, that wasn't that great in the first place. I'm on the fence with this place. Great atmosphere, but they need to hire ppl that are experience in the field. Taking one order at a time and delivering 2 drinks at a time is not cutting it for the crowd that this place gets. It took 40 min to get one drink and so far it's been 50 min since a sandwich was ordered and it's still not here. I was here on Halloween and it took forever to get any service. Whether it's hiring more ppl or getting ppl to move faster on their feet and carry more than a plate or two drinks at a time would be totally helpful. read more
