Service was also very attentive. For cocktails, I had the white sangria and my husband had the berry mojito. Both drinks were refreshing and well balanced, too pretty to drink! For tapas, we shared empanadas (angus beef, shrimp & chorizo, organic chicken), a tale of two countries (burrata, eggplant agrodolce, serrano ham) and land & sea (NY strip & sea scallops). We loved them all, so delicious and flavorful. For our entrees, we had the churrasco (char-grilled black angus skirt steak) and pollo gitano (organic chicken thighs, sweet sausage, hot cherry peppers). Also very good and beautifully presented, the pollo gitano had a little kick to it. For dessert, we had the churros con chocolate and flan, very tasty and perfect to end our dinner. Great date spot or casual outing with friends. You won't be disappointed. I'll absolutely be back.

I ordered a burger with Swiss cheese and it was some of the funkiest smelling Swiss cheese I've ever smelt. So much so I couldn't eat the burger. Even after taking the cheese off the burger the smell remained on the bacon and meat so I didn't eat it. My husband gave me his appetizer which was Bronzino bites in a cream sauce with asparagus and capers. It was decent. I won't be trying it again though.

This brother and…read moresister duo cook like they're back in the homeland making their mama's down-home Puerto Rican meals- but still keeping up with the different Vegan and Vegetarian eating lifestyles. Amidst a pub, animal hospital, smoke shop and a few other storefronts, is El Cantito Cafe on Central Ave in Yonkers. No reservations, just walk in. But the lady on the phone said to come right away and grab the only 2-seater available. Bet. Tito Rojas, Victor Manuelle and other Salseros were blasting up in this joint when we came on a Friday night. Debbie as it turns out, is the sister in this duo and greeted us like we've been long-time friends- and our table was in fact waiting for us. Large framed photographs of Puerto Rico and Vejigantes decorate Cantito's dark grey walls. Our Mojito and Lemonade Spiked with Coconut something had strength but had too much ice. Service was excellent and so friendly. Our server was a sweetheart and the brother in this partnership, greeted us. My Creole Shrimp with a side of white rice/red beans was good. Hubs liked his fried pork chunks and remembers that particular taste and seasoning growing up. Typical Puerto Rican mofongo calls for chicharrón in it- but Cantito doesn't include any which is a great, creative-thinking Vegan move for a classic dish like this one. I'm not sure what else I can say about this Puerto Rican spot, except for the fact that the food is tasty, you're greeted like family (hubs felt right at home) and the music is banging.

So we visited and had an amazing meal. Even better, we got to meet the most humble and appreciative people ever, Debbie and Julio Santana are charming. I urge everyone I know to take a trip and have a great meal while supporting a deserving family owned business.

We were greeted and said we could sit anywhere and told no yellow rice and chorizo. Except for decor a mural of Old San Juan nothing authentic but we are here for the food. Ordered chorizo and maduros Empanadas appetizer tripeleta sandwich with side of tostones. Wife had Mofongo with shrimp. Empanada was really good never had that combo before so good start. Triplelta is steak pork and chicken and super soft hero/pan bread. Nice flavor tostones were big and were accompanied by a garlic white sauce. I like just ajo in oil which they did not have. Wifes mofongo was a little salty as were the jumbo shrimp in white sauce. She did receive a wonderful citrus dressing which she used on the little salad which she loved. We took most of it home since we were not looking to fill up prior to the casino. Saw a few people order takeout not sure if that makes up a large part of business or not. My wife and I have been in hospitality for 30 years and if you see a new face wouldn't you want to welcome them and thank them for trying out the restaurant? I think so. Not sure if it was owner or manager but he spoke to the one other table throughout our meal. I think he missed an opportunity to talk with us about our experience. Waitress spoke only English which is stark contrast to every Spanish restaurant in Brooklyn where we lived for 30 years. My wife is Puerto Rican so she was looking for that connection to no avail. So to close the food was decent but not sure I would make the trip back. We will keep trying til we find a real Spanish restaurant.

These had a lack of that, The alcapuras were nice and crispy and had flavor, but one seasoning used was unfamiliar, and they didn't need to add it. As per my sofito burger that had avocado, fried cheese, some sort of aioli really wasn't a marriage for me. It did not all go together. The ground meat was too thick and bland. I guess if you're starving, it'll taste good. Yuca fries were thick and hard. My husband's entree was better tasting but wasn't hot. The parcha juice was a 10/10.

So when…read moreone opens, I want to experience how my people are cooking or doctoring up the foods I grew up with. Plus, I've had Gustico on my radar ever since they opened down on Central Ave in Yonkers a few years ago. Despite their current average rating, they're still a firm favorite so decided on take out. The space is small with their food warmers taking up a lot of space on the right. A few high top tables on the left and lots of tropical faux greenery to invite you further in. Gustico has all the hearty Dominican staples- think: sancocho, stewed goat, stewed fish with coconut, chicharrones de cerdo (fried pork chunks), etc. The seafood though, isn't offered daily as menu might suggest as the restaurant may not have received their supply for the day. That was the case when I came here and was told they didn't receive the fish because of the rainstorm. I ordered yellow rice- that looked like white rice doused in yellow food coloring, a container of white rice, a small container of each of black and red beans. Both beans were tasty- but the thinly sliced celery in each threw me off since traditional Dominican cooking doesn't call for that and I also picked up baked chicken for hubs which he liked a lot. Tamarind and Passion fruit juices were the real thing- maybe way tooo sweet- but tasty. Don't pay any mind to their strip small location, come for the soul-soothing Dominican stews+other foods and warm service practically all year round. However, aside from their 3+ year mark, Gustico needs to straighten out themselves big time and not cut corners because it seems EVERYBODY is complaining about them. Just do better.
