The calamari and chicken sandwich were fresh, delicious, and perfectly crunchy. Honey chicken had a good medium heat with some fried jalapeños on the brioche bun. Perfect road trip spot! Visited a couple times while RVing around the Catskills. Lots of options on the menu so my kids were as happy as us parents. Everyone was friendly. Excellent bloody Marys and beer list. I have visited twice since it opened. My friend is the manager here and I'm not giving her these stars, but her staff: Friendly young staff, refreshing to say the least. From waitstaff to bartenders, all extremely pleasant. So far I have tasted the wings (very good) the steak sliders (killer) the salmon BLT is OMG! AMAZING! This is for all of the folks who fight food allergies. The Paper Mill at 7400 Route 209 in Napanoch, NY is for you. First off, it's under new management. Roger Ross is in charge of operations now, and he has years of experience in the hospitality business. Roger pays attention to detail and is also all about bringing people joy. He's staffed The Paper Mill with like-minded servers. This makes spending time in the restaurant very pleasant. (Let me give our bartender/server Ashley a shout-out here.) Then, there is the atmosphere. The Paper Mill has a large, beautifully-appointed bar. There are several spacious dining rooms. There is pet-friendly outdoor seating, plus a gigantic ballroom...not to mention a huge tented area for special events. And there's plenty of parking, making The Paper Mill a go-to place for weddings, reunions, and holiday gatherings. The bottom line on a restaurant is always the food. This can be dicey for us, since my wife Kim is allergic to gluten, among other things. (Want a laugh? She's a cake artist who has won several competitions on Food Network...but she can't eat her own cake!) But food allergies are no issue at The Paper Mill. The staff took down Kim's allergens, checked with the chef, and made sure her Seared Salmon (with spring peas and asparagus) was prepared so that she had no digestive issues. And, yeah, the food is good! I had Orecchiette, Peas, and Bacon...an excellent pasta dish, priced at only $19. (This is another thing about The Paper Mill--the prices aren't outrageous.) Kim's salmon was cooked perfectly, and we both remarked how the fresh vegetables were blanched, allowing their natural flavors to pop (rather than drowning them out in sauces). So we have been to the new PaperMill Restaurant three times now and we like it a good deal. I'm judging it based on what I would expect from any restaurant regardless of where it is located. The Restaurant was formerly the White Wolf, the owner designed it as a large open space, you felt like you were walking into a convention hall, fortunately the new owners divided the space up and it has more intimacy. You can also eat in the bar, or a smaller sunroom in the back, and in nice weather outside, really nice. Service was excellent, the servers were cordial and attentive. We placed our order for drinks right away, a fresh bread basket with multi grain crackers came immediately after and the server took our order. They were attentive throughout the meal, removing empty plates and asking if we needed anything else. The food was good, a little uneven as I will say but once you know the menu you can stay away from the items that are not so good but the better items are excellent. 1. Roasted Salmon with mango chutney, excellent, fresh and the chutney is just right. 2. Steak is a really good cut, I had the 12oz a good portion, I ordered it medium rare it was closer to medium, but it was still tender, juicy and flavorful. 3. Osso Bucco really good, well made, large portion, not fatty, moist and juicy fell off the bone, perfectly cooked. 4. Mushroom Macaroni and Cheese, amazing! Never had better, cheesey, and rich mushroom flavor, not for kids! Definitely adult Mac n Cheese! 5. Artichokes, not so good, smothered in Parmesan and balsamic the artichokes get lost, will not order again. 6. Fish and Chips, awful!, greasy and the batter separates from the fish, also the fish falls apart, it was a real mess, will not order again. 7. Steamed Muscles, wonderful! Steamed in a very nice cream chili broth, very flavorful, a lot of broth. But as my grandmother used to say too much soup and no noodles! I wish there were more muscles and larger, these were tiny and not enough of them. Served with 2 pieces of garlic bread I wish there was more of that as well. But really, really good. 8. Watermelon and feta salad, didn't love it, tiny bits of feta, and the watermelon was full of tiny seeds, not bad but could improve with seedless part of watermelon and larger feta pieces. Will not order again. The prices are a bit high for 4, with 2 appetizers, 4 mains, 1 glass of wine and no dessert, $170 with tip (20%). So all in all a good experience, we will go often because there are not too many good restaurants around, if there were perhaps less often because it is uneven, but we would go nevertheless, a good experience and recommend. read more

Went here around 5pm and we were greeted by a sign hanging where host/hostess should be saying.. "join us at the bar". After standing there confused, we headed towards the bar and we're greeted by a waitress that looked completely complexed when we asked for a table for 2.. she then directed us to the bar. I asked if we could sit and have dinner in the dinning room she then walked away and came back with another waitress that had a crappy attitude and told us that there will be a wait for dinner because the kitchen is overwhelmed with orders. I have been to the new Paper Mill restaurant 6 times. The last time we went we all had the prime rib. At $28 a person they should include a cup of soup or small salad and where is the bread. They need to offer some warm rolls. The prime rib was excellent but luke warm. The potatoes, vegetables and sauce were cold. As I like warm food we sent it back to get warmed up. This is the third time there that meals have been luke warm or cold. The manager did come out to speak to us and i told her about the sides always being cold. Maybe they should bring back the old chef. A great chef would really make this restaurant excellent. We will go back again because we support our local businesses. read more

Half-a-dozen years ago we were regulars at the White Wolf in Napanoch, Ulster County, NY. Jim, the owner was ill, he sold, the chef Richard retired, others took over, and from time to time we tried it under it's new name. The place was awful. That has changed. Now the new Water Wheel food is very, very good. My wife had lamb chops, I had salmon. We both had Caesar salad. We both had wine. Several restaurants in Ellenville nearby pass muster but none has such nicely prepared food, professional wait staff, ambiance (whatever that is) as the NEW Water Wheel, risen from diner food oblivion to a place we intend to re-visit frequently. This was about as poor a selection as they could possibly put on. They had a small bowl of salad. One vegetable. Lamb stew, ice cold egg on a cold English muffin, cold quiche, scalloped potatoes and a ham. 2 people with tip was $ 95.00 Needless to say, we will not be back. The large room was freezing. I ordered food for 20 people which was enough for some to get seconds as well a post midnight snack and there were still left overs. I picked the $40 per person option and the variety was great. There was something from everyone. I liked the layout of the website which made ordering and selection easy. I spoke with Larry and Cheryl who both made things easy in regard to ordering, payment, and pick up. They were very accommodating. Disappointing I was hoping for good things with a new restaurant in the area... we have a number that are really great, but one more is nice. Well, the others don't need to worry about losing my business. I ordered the "crispy duck" , where I had visions of crackling skin with a gentle cherry glaze. Instead I got thick fatty skin with a Cherry sauce... to go on my pile of mashed potatoes. My hubby ordered the seafood fra diablo... while the seafood was nice (large shrimp and scallops), the sauce was not at all spicy. It is always exciting to try a new place. I felt they could work on their "social distancing" practices. One of the waitresses did not even have a mask on for the entire time we were there. My wife ordered the "blackened" salmon (not sure where the blackening came in). It was tasty and (as our waiter was so kind to describe that it is not too dry) was not too dry. The mashed potatoes were barely even warm and when we mentioned it to our waiter he responded by saying "yeah, that seems to be a regular comment about those". He offered to take the plate back to warm them up, but we chose not to have the salmon microwaved as well. He brought us a plate of hot, freshly microwaved mashed potatoes. I had a burger which was tasty but very messy, which I attributed to the greasy sauteed onions. Fries were done nicely. I have been a chef for over 30 years, so I know what it takes to open and maintain a new place. I am usually willing to give a place a couple of tries before writing them off. I wouldn't know where to begin. The waitress cried. The drinks didn't come until 45 minutes after being seated and they were the wrong drinks. An appetizer was missed. One entree didn't arrive. We finally, politely, said we were leaving. Waitress told us they were very busy from a wedding party and the bartender was yelling at her that if we wanted our drinks sooner we could get up from the table and get them ourselves. She then cried some more. We asked for a manager and then a "friend" of the manager came to see us- she happened to be the mother of the waitress. Eventually the manager came over, owned the entire fiasco, comped our entire meal and we just left. We felt very bad for the waitress, she was obscenely stressed. Food was adequate, if not disappointing. Service was poor. Me and my friends went for lunch. We got shrimp cocktail to start. Well, I say cocktail, it was three medium sized shrimp, for fourteen dollars. That was disappointment number 1. My friend also got an order of potato latkes as an app, and it was drowned in onions. At this point we were still cautiously optimistic. We got our meals, a couple sandwiches with steak fries. The sandwiches were alright, not worth the price point. The fries were not fresh. They felt and tasted like they were under a heat lamp. Which also means any attempt to salt them were futile. The waitress only checked on us once or twice during our time there, and when she asked if we wanted dessert, we refused. She then took my friends plate, which had three quarters of his sandwich still on it! Eat here at your own risk. read more
