My love affair with whole bean coffee continues unabated…read more I stumbled across this locally-based coffee roaster by happenstance. As luck would have it, I was hanging out at a local cafe and the owner had just gotten a new brand of whole bean coffee in- that from the Flint Coffee Company. Curious, I asked him what it was like and he seemed pretty enthusiastic about it. He said it was a new line that he was introducing for retail, likening to the rich Sumatra Starbucks blend, but with a twist. Well, I love the earthiness of Starbucks Sumatra, so my interest was piqued. What was the twist? What was that extra something that supposedly made it worth it? Apparently, it's organically-grown under special shade trees or something. These coffee beans are marketed as "direct trade, shade grown with no pesticides involved." Whatever it is, it does the trick. At any rate, I know I liked it a whole lot. Flint Coffee Company bills itself as a family owned business interested in producing sustainable coffee beans from their family-run farm (the family apparently owns a coffee plantation in Peru and owns the local company where it's roasted here in Flint). The beans are hand-harvested, washed and then dried in the sun on a drying bed. Later, the beans are depulped, with any pulp remnants used as a fertilizer for the soil while the beans ferment overnight and are rewashed. I guess it's more of a natural way to process coffee beans. All I know is that I was impressed with the smoothness of such a rich coffee flavor. There was very little to no acidity in it and no strange aftertaste that is the hallmark of cheap can coffee. In other words, if you like Folgers or Maxwell House, this probably isn't the coffee for you. However, I like my coffee rich and earthy, so it was a hit with me. It tasted just as good in its last drop as it did from the first sip from my coffee cup. They have a few different blends, from milder beans to the darker, more intense variety that I prefer. I picked up a 12 oz bag for $11. That wasn't a bad price. It wasn't the cheapest (it's true that I could have probably gotten a whole lot of average canned coffee at the grocery store for the same price or less), but for me, it's about quality, not quantity when it comes to coffee. I really can't stand that acidic aftertaste of cheap coffee, so I was down with the price.

Service feels slow and strangely disengaged, as though customers are interrupting the ambiance simply by ordering. What should feel warm and welcoming instead comes across as performative and inattentive. The food is especially disappointing considering the prices. The sandwiches are remarkably small and underfilled, leaving you wondering whether you accidentally ordered a half portion. The salads are even worse, which is essentially a pile of arugula. For a downtown business surrounded by residents and neighboring businesses, the lack of inclusion for the community and the repeated disregard for basic city noise expectations is difficult to ignore. Ultimately, Flint has several coffee shops that provide better food, better service, and a far more genuine sense of love for the community here.

My husband and I particularly enjoyed the attentive service, the friendly dog that hangs out (it belongs to the owners, I believe), and terrific pour over coffee. Now that Flint Foster is closed and Good Beans operates on only limited boutique hours (ugh), we'll make Dorothy's more a local hangout..

The entire experience was wonderful until we were checking out. There was a nice young lady ringing us up & pleasantly chatting with us. Then, a woman walked in & asked a gentleman behind the counter for food. I believe she was homeless. He told her that they didn't have anything & that she needed to leave. I stayed silent as it was not my place to tell him how to run his business. As she was leaving, I walked to her & met her in the vestibule. I handed her a business card that could put her in touch with an organization designed to help people get back on their feet. When I walked back in, the owner/manager(I'm not entirely certain of his actual position) started complaining to me(and I'm paraphrasing here) that I "shouldn't have given her money[which I didn't], shouldn't have helped her because now she was going to keep coming back because she'll expect more & he now has to be mean to her & tell her 'no'." I looked at him at told him that it goes against my nature to not be kind to someone in need. My friend & I purchased just over $450.00 worth of merchandise. When we were done, we had four large boxes of books & other things. He offered a flatbed cart to help get things out to our vehicle. I said no, because I didn't want anything else from him, nor did I want to give him an opportunity to complain more about me being a decent human being. If a lot of what we bought had not been for other people, I would have told him he could keep it. I will never go back into this store simply because he tried to make me feel bad about being kind to a fellow human being. It's one thing to have a policy asking anyone panhandling to leave. I get that, I understand why policies like that exist & I won't interfere in enforcing those policies. What I have a problem with is trying to shame someone for being kind to a fellow human being. Shortly into our visit (maybe twenty minutes in & we were there for about an hour), we had already planned on coming back another day for more. Now, I will NOT be returning, EVER.

This cute little indie coffee stand, located inside the Flint Farmer's Market, brews up a fine cup of joe. The espresso is very nice, bold, but not overbearing. If you're not sure what you want, the barista will recommend something or whip up something a tad more unique than the traditional latte or espresso. If you want tea instead of coffee, they can do that, too. Their tea variety is humongous, something to certainly suit every taste. Good prices and even better service.
